JamesBuckeisnotyouraveragemiddleschoolstudent.Hewasbornwithanincrediblyrarenervoussystem
disorderwhichprohibitshisbodyfromregisteringpain.Coupledwithaninabilitytoexperienceorexpres
emotionsandanoverprotectivemother,James’conditionsethimapartfromotherkids.Wemeethimatemptingtorideabikeforthefirsttime,whichresultsinhimcrashingintoaparkedcar.Jamesjumpsrightup,completelyunfazedbythehead-oncolision.Hismother,Cara,worieshemighthavebrokensomethingorhasinternalinjuriessinceJamesisunabletofeelwhetherhe’shurtornot.Jameshasnochoicebuttogotothedoctor.
It’stherewemeetDr.Ramin,anewdoctorwhosympathizeswithCara’sloveandconcernforherson’ssafety
andpledgestodoalhecantohelp.
Atschoolit’sapparentthatJamesisasocialoutcast,onlydrawingatentionwhenScout,theclasbuly,makes
aproductionofbeatinghimupinfrontoftheotherkids.HisonlyfriendisanasthmaticboynamedDoyle,who
actsasanintermediarybetweenJamesandthe“normalworld”.Jamescatchestheeyeofaclasmatenamed
Kristen,whobeginstofalforhisperceivedflawsandwho’sinfatuationleadstoherinvitinghimtoherbirthday
party.Attheparty,Jamesisthrustintowildlyunfamiliarsocialteritorywhichultimatelyendsinhisarmaccidentalycatchingfire.Videosfromthepartygoviral.Afterschool,inaneforttohelpJamesproceshisemotions
andlearntofuly
andlearntofulyexperiencelife,Doylechalengeshimtoaraceacrosthefootbalfield.Overexertinghimself,
Doylesufersasevereasthmaatackandfalstothegroundwheezing.Jamesfranticalytriestocal91,butis
unabletogethelpintime.
AfterDoyle’ssuddendeath,Jameshasan“awakening”ofsorts.Hebeginsdreamingatnightandgainsawarenesofbodilysensationsthatarecompletelyforeigntohim.Ashestartstonoticeinklingsofemotions,James
experiencesamomentaryflashoffrustrationandstandsuptoScout,re-injuringhisarm.Scoutretreatsbackto
herbrokenhomeandstashesherdad’shandguninherbackpacktobringwithhertoschoolthenextday.
JameshideshisnewestinjuryfromhismomandvisitsDr.Raminsolotohaveitlookedat.Heconfidesinhim
aboutthechangeshe’sfeeling.Growingevermoreconcernedforherson,Carabeginsseekingadvicefrom

othersandsharesdetailsthatrationalizeherextremefears.
Thenextday,DrRamininvitesCaraouttolunchandweseeagenuineconnectionbetweenthetwoofthem.
Meanwhilebackatschool,ScoutinteruptsJames’presentationbybrandishingtheguninanatempttofrightenherclasmatesandmakethemrealizethatthereisn'tanythingspecialaboutJames.Thegunaccidentaly
goesofandhitsJamesintheshoulder.Theclasscatersinfear,butKristenstayswithJamesasheliesinher
lap.Thefirstsignsofpainstarttoregisteronhisface.WhenhismotherandDr.Raminariveattheschool,they
rushthroughthechaostofindJames.Whentheyfinalyreachhim,althoughhe’sclearlywounded,there’sadiscerniblechangeinhimthatwasn'ttherebefore.AsJamesiscariedawayonthestretcher,weseehimsmile
genuinelyforthefirsttimeinhislife.

Theplanwasalwaystodirectacomedy.Asastandupcomedianforover16years,Iknowhowto
makeaudienceslaughthroughstoryteling.Theplanwasalwaystodirectacomedy.Notonce
whilesearchingforascripttotakeonformyfirstmoviedidIeverthinkitwouldbeanythingother
thanacomedy.WhenJamestheSecondlandedinmylap,Irememberreadingthescriptforthefirst
time,tearsstreamingdownmyfacebythetimeIwasdone.Iwasinbedasmygirlfriendsleptnext
tome,andsimilartoJames,shetoohadbeenbornwithacongenitalinsensitivitytopain.Iwasfascinatedbythisphenomenonwhichfeltsoclosetohome,yetwassofarfromtherealmsofmyunderstanding.Anoverwhelmingfeelingofserendipitywashedoverme.IknewIhadtotelthisstory.
Thecolaborationthroughoutthemakingofthisprojectbroughtmeimmensejoy.Iwasableto
gatherawonderfulteamoftalentedfilmmakersandwewrappedproductioninhighspirits,elated
andproudoftheworkwehaddone.Post-productionbroughtanewsetofchalengesandafter
eightweeksIfinalysawthefirstcompletedcutofmyfilm.ItwassounderwhelmingthatIfeltlikea
failure.IfearedIhadnomovie,thatalthetime,efort,andmoneyhadbeenawaste.Hopeles
andheartbroken,Ibegansearchingforanysolutionthatcouldsavethefilm.Istartedfreshwitha
neweditor,andaftersometimeanddiscusion,hepresentedmewithabrandnewcut.Iknewhow
importanteditingwasinfilmmaking,butthetruesignificancehadneverhitmepriortothisproces.I
wasovercomewithreliefatthenewversionofmyfilmasIbegantoseeitcometolife.Inowfeel
theweightofhowtrulycolaborativeaprocesfilmmakingiswitheverycelofmybody.Thisexperiencehasbeenoneofmybiggesttakeawaystodate.
Thisfilmportraysonlyoneofcountlesraremedicalconditionsthatexistinourworld.Ihopethe
storyIhavebroughttoscreenwilcreateanemotionalexperienceforviewersthattouchestheir
heartsthesamewaythescriptoriginalytouchedmine.
