Murray Grey Pioneer Passes
Carl J. Hansen, Carlynn Ranch, Joliet, MT passed away
on August 21 of this year. Carl was instrumental in
forming the Montana Breeders and importing Murray
Grey cattle into Montana. He was a founding member
of the Murray Grey Association of the Great Northwest
and participated in shows and displays at fairs all across
the West. Carl was a director of the American Murray
Grey Association for 6 years. He is survived by his
wife of 61 years, Lynne.
Grey Thoughts
George Germaine
AMGA President
Last Christmas, I was looking at the kitchen gadgets in a local variety store. I was completely
lost in my thoughts, when I felt a tap on my arm. I looked down and there stood a cute,
chubby little guy, about six or seven years old. I could see he had a small car in his hand. He
looked up and in a little old man voice said, “Say, could you explain this car to me?” I took
the car and looked it over. It was a friction car, which it turned out he had never seen before.
We talked about that car and cars in general for about ten minutes. Then he cocked his head,
and looked at me real hard and said, “Say are you a stranger?” Well, I told him he better go
find his mom, and I had a good chuckle as he walked away. It seemed like a good story, right
up my alley, and I told it to many laughs over the next few weeks. The poor kid had been
hounded at home and school about not talking to strangers, but had never been told what a
stranger was.
I’ve come to realize lately we do the same thing with our new cattle breeders. I have a feeling
that new cattle people probably scratch their heads when they listen to us talking about our
animals. We use so many abbreviations: EPD, AI, BRD, BES, Bangs, SQ IM, ET, BVD, E.
COLI, BO-C, Lepto, IBR, BRSV, BVD, etc.
Our local feed store puts on a cattle night each year. They cook hamburgers, franks, and all
the trimmings. They bring in guest speakers. This year they had a vet from RFD TV. Of
course, the speakers all try to sell their product. This year, it was a variety of Purina products.
About half way through Dr. Chesterfield’s very professionally prepared video program, a
fellow in back said, “Hey, please stop as I don’t have any idea of what you are talking about.”
Several people in attendance gave him a glare, and a couple even made rude comments like
“This is basic stuff everybody should know this, or they shouldn’t have animals.” Fortunately,
the vet told him to hang around afterward, and he would go over it with him.
Recently I read an article that used twenty-four different abbreviations-a total of forty-three
times. It looked like it was written in a code very similar to one my pals and I used when I was
about twelve.
What’s my point? My point is let’s keep in mind that we all started as beginners. Beginners
grow into productive members if we nurture them. Some of us were beginners at a young age,
and others got started later in life. Let’s make sure everyone is included when we chew the fat
about our animals.
At the cattle night I mentioned earlier, we were asked to stand up and introduce ourselves and
tell about our farm, stock and any cattle group affiliations we had. I was sure proud when I
was able to say I was the President of the American Murray Grey Association. We have a great
association, and I think our strength is our ability to work together. Let’s keep it that way.
Board Approves Increase in
“MG News” Advertising Rates
Following a presentation by Gennie Gerow,
Registrar and Office Manager, the members of the
Board of Directors voted to increase the advertising
rates for the “Murray Grey News”. Gennie pointed out
to the Directors that although the cost of paper, ink and
postage have all increased dramatically over the past 10
years, there have been no increases in advertising rates
in that same period of time. She also noted that the
“News” is currently being published in color and that
a full color version is also posted on the Association’s
web site – a tremendous value for the advertisers’
dollars.
On a vote of 10 to 1 the Directors authorized the
Gerows to increase the advertising rates by 10%. But,
in an effort to generate more consistency in advertising,
the Board also agreed that members who agree to
advertise in all 4 issues in any calendar year will get
their ads at the current price. The 4X insertions will
have to be paid before the 1 st of March, but advertisers
will be able to change the content of their ad in every
issue should they desire.
The new rate card is below and will take effect
beginning with the March 2009 issue.
AMGA Directors Focus on the Future
The Board of Directors of the American Murray Grey Association met in Louisville, KY on 19
November 2008 at the Association’s headquarters. John and Geneva Gerow, our Executive Director and
Registrar, hosted the evening, which included a hamburger barbeque before the meeting.
Board President George Germaine called the meeting to order shortly after 7:30PM. All of the Directors
were present except for Kyle Knight. Sharon Virtue read the minutes of the meeting from 9 February 2008 and
from the special meeting on 5 October 2008. The special meeting had been called to vote on waiving the 15
month limit between membership meetings so that the Annual Membership Meeting could be held in Louisville
in conjunction with the National Show.
Executive Director John Gerow presented the financial report with analysis. He reported that as of 31
October, income was tracking slightly less than projected in the budget for 2008. Gerow suggested that the
decrease in revenue is probably a result of the current instability in the national economy and does not reflect
any downtrend in interest in Murray Grey cattle.
Gerow went on to show the Directors that while income is trending less than budget, so are expenses.
The Executive Director was not able to offer any specific change in business practices to account for the lower
operating expenses, except to say that Louisville may be a less expensive city in which to do business than was
Reno. The budget for 2008 projected retained earnings of $1000.00 for the year, and Gerow told the Board that
he was confident that retained earnings would meet the budget projection.
The Directors revisited the idea of creating a DVD to promote the use of Group BreedPlan among
members. Sharon Virtue heads up this effort and is asking members to send her digital video clips for use in
this effort. In other old business, John Gerow explained that our technical people are still working on adding
the codes to all of the AMGA forms to make them more user friendly. He also explained that he is still working
with the software vendor to get all of the EPD categories reported out.
The Directors authorized the national office to proceed with production of the 2009 – 2010 membership
directory, the “Herdbook”. Rate card and information will be available for the members soon. Release of the
“Herdbook” will coincide with the 2009 National Show if at all possible.
The meeting recessed until after the Annual Membership Meeting, when the meeting was reconvened to
elect officers for 2009. George Germaine, Vadar, WA was re-elected President, Mike Birch, White Hall, MD,
was tapped for Vice President. Sharon Virtue agreed to serve again as Secretary and Steve Cummings will be
the Treasurer for 2009.
Membership Elects Directors –
Votes Down DNA Identifiers for Natural Sires
Louisville –
The 2008 American Murray Grey Association Annual Membership Meeting was held on 20 November
2008 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. There were about 20 members present.
Executive Director, John Gerow gave a short presentation on the financial condition of the Association,
which is sound. He also presented data on the volume of association activity for the year to date. Although
registrations and transfers are running less than projected in the 2008 budget, Gerow anticipates that the
Association will end the year with positive retained earnings.
Andy Zinnel, Rockwell City, IA and Michael Jimemez, Ridgefield, WA were re-elected to a second,
three-year term on the Board of Directors. George Virtue, Sweet Home, OR was elected to a first three year
term.
In a surprise move, Annette Pulliam, Shelbyville, KY presented a motion that would require all bull
calves to have DNA identifiers on file with the Association at the time of registration. Pulliam suggested
that this program would be incredibly pro-active, establishing the first phase of a complete database of DNA
identifiers for the breed. Such a system, Pulliam argued, would offer extraordinary protection for breeders by
having more DNA on hand in the event of disputes.
Other members expressed concern that many members would not understand the value of such a
requirement and that the Association would lose both members and registrations. Several members argued
that increasing the cost of owning and marketing Murray Greys without an assurance of increased sales prices,
would be a disincentive to registering bulls.
Executive Director, John Gerow told the assembly that, in his view, having such a database would be the
right thing to do, but that this is not the right time to do it, in light of a slowing economy. Gerow encouraged
breeders to give serious consideration to submitting DNA on all calves for carcass trait and color analysis and
for DNA identifiers. He said that this will be the marketing advantage in the future.
The motion was voted down on an extremely lopsided vote.
building on a ROCK solid foundation
