GALT RANCH 

The Galt Ranch is a working cattle cattle ranch in central 

Montana covering nearly 100, 000 acres. The Galts have been 

raising cattle and horses in Montana for three generations. Bill, 

along with his wife Jill and their family, run a cow, calf and yearling 

operation into which the breeding of good ranch horses fits very 

well. Bill learned long ago from his father, Jack, the value of 

raising quality ranch horses and how they can enhance and benefit 

a ranching operation. The Galts presently run four stud bunches, 

pasture breeding quality mares in the rugged foothills of the Big 

Belt Mountains. The mares foal out and then raise their colts in 

the rough and rocky country where sage brush and badger holes 

abound. Growing up in a very natural way, in the same country 

where they will possibly be working some day allows the young 

horses to grow into sturdy, surefooted individuals. 

Bill started his own Quarter Horse Breeding Program in the 

1970s with the purchase of two stallions bred for the specific 

qualities that ranchers value. The rugged mountains of Montana 

require a horse to be tough, surefooted and have a good bone 

structure under him. A good ranch horse must also be cowy, 

intelligent and athletic in order to do his job well. Disposition is of 

the utmost importance as the Galts believe that a horse can have 

a world of cow sense and athletic ability, but if he’s too difficult or 

dangerous to get along with then all his talent is wasted.

Our goal for our ranch breeding program is to produce sturdy, 

athletic cowhorses that have calm, intelligent dispositions. 

We realize, however that we are only producing the raw material 

for good working horses. After that, it’s up to the owner/trainer 

to determine how successful the horse will be. A poor horseman 

can ruin a colt’s chances to advance. An average hand will always 

ride average horses unless he or she strives constantly to improve 

himself. A good hand will make any horse better with every ride. 

The horse’s attitude knowledge and skills are the mirror of the 

rider. 

We work hard all year to develop a good balance of trust and 

respect in our horses, whether they ar weanlings or started young 

prospects. Therefore, it is our hope that every foal we raise and 

sell gives pleasure and enjoyment to his or her new owner.

CoNTwAy RANCH 

Back in the early 50s when I started roping I didn’t have money 

for good horses. I bought what horses I could — broke and trained 

them. Looking back, I realize I was training myself, as well as the 

horses. I learned how to choose horses with good feet, strong legs, 

brains and stamina. I was not bound by bloodlines and names. I 

shopped and I mixed. I have had some great horses like the little 

gray that Troy Pruitt rode to win the calf roping at the NFR in 1994. 

In 2007 Chad Johnson won the Montana Circuit Finals on a mare 

I raised. She was named “Montana Cow Horse of the Year.” She is 

taking Marty Becker, of Alberta, down the road this year and he is 

sitting high in the standings. 

I am constantly looking for the best studs and the strongest 

mares to provide good horses for roping, cutting and ranch work. 

Keeping a string of horses has also provided me with the models 

I need for my art. My work appeals to the men and women who 

know horses. 

Selling a sculpture which people appreciate is gratifying. Riding 

a great horse is just pure pleasure. I am lucky enough to do both.

BURNS RANCH 

Ron’s great granddad, Frank Keene, came from Sterling, Virginia, by 

oxen to Virginia city, Montana, in 1864. He was racing horses down Last 

Chance Gulch in 1865. He established a ranch on the Missouri River 

near Canton, Montana, where he raised his family. Ron’s grandad, Guy 

Keene, homesteaded southwest of Lingshire in 1914. 

This ranch is now owned by Ron and Donna. We began ranching 

full time west of White Sulphur Springs in 1979. Due to the prolonged 

drought, we sold most of our cows in 2002 and are now managing a ranch 

for absentee owners. We had leased this ranch for 22 years and raised our 

family here. 

Ron spent a lot of time with his grandparents. He always rode horses 

that were gathered off the open range. Donna had been the Secretary for 

the Montana Quarter Horse Association. We married in 1971, and Donna 

got Ron to realize the value of quality horses. We have been raising 

Quarter Horses since then and have always bred for a quality, versatile, 

good using kind of horse. 

We now have a little more time to devote to our horses, which have 

always been a part of our lives. Ron still helps the neighbors trail cattle, 

brand, ship and wean calves and is always training his young horses.

started her and was roping slow calves 

on her breakaway. I liked her so much I 

bought her back, bred her and sold her as 

a broodmare. I bought her back again 

and bred her to the champion Australian 

stallion, Peptos Stylish Oak who was the 

leading sire of cutting futurity winners in 

Australia. The filly from this breeding 

is now in British columbia with trainer 

Dave Batty. In 2006 I bred her to Hes 

A Peptospoonful. His stud fee is now 

$10,000, transported semen included. 

This year I bred her to my stallion royal 

Brown Fox who is out of Marty Beckers 

great rope Mare Leroy’s Pretty Girl.

I sent her to Arnie Johnson to finish. I decided 

to breed her but they really wanted her so they 

bought her with the provision that I could get an 

embryo from her. This year Marty Becker bought 

her for a record setting price and has been 

setting arena records on her. A Foxy Filly, the 

dam of Leroys Pretty Girl, had been on the track 

in california when I got her and within three 

months of training by Jimmy Phillips she won 

third at the International Snaffle Bit competition in 

Montana. This young stallion, with both speed

This is really a great young Mare. I didn’t 

get her to Dave Batty early enough to train 

for the Futurities because of closure of the 

canadian border. Jimmy Phillips started 

her as a long yearling and rode her for 

about a year. I rode her and worked 

cattle on her for about six months. Dave 

Batty rode her for about a year and made 

a cutting horse out of her. I brought her 

home and bred her to the great cutting 

horse Smart Mate. This mare has good 

feet and great confirmation. She has a 

great stop and is very athletic. SHe has 

the speed to make a barrel horse. There are no flaws in this Mare. She has no bad 

habits and if I wanted to stay in the business she would not be for sale. You won’t 

find a better one.
