LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 

Dear Bulldog Friends: 

As I complete my seventh year as Director of Athletics at UNC Asheville, I am more amazed and impressed than 

ever with how passionate and committed our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are to becoming “Champions 

in Athletics and Leaders in Life”. I am equally thankful for the continued support and enthusiasm that our fans, 

alumni, and donors have shown our department during the 2010-11 season. 

The following document is the first UNC Asheville Athletics Annual Report, a yearly summary intended to 

provide greater insight into the operations of our Department, highlight the many accomplishments of our 14 

sports, 185 student-athletes, and over 40 coaches and staff, and emphasize the importance of having engaged 

fans and friends and adequate programmatic funding. 

By reviewing the following annual report, you will see that in 2010-11 Bulldog Athletics contributed greatly to 

the success stories at UNC Asheville. The men’s basketball team won the Big South Conference Championship 

and competed in the NCAA Tournament. Jesse Norman was named the Big South Conference Women’s Indoor 

Track Coach of the Year, and sprinter Natalie Pearson competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships 

and finished 24 th in the nation. Former baseball player, Ty Wigginton, who currently plays for the Colorado 

Rockies was inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame. 

In the classroom, student-athletes continued to have unprecedented success, as record numbers made the 

Athletic Director’s 3.0 Club and the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. Additionally, Women’s Tennis received 

national recognition for a perfect 1000 NCAA Academic Progress Rate. Women’s Basketball player, Grace 

Blaylock was one of the winners of the ninth annual Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar- 

Athlete Award. Baseball player Danny Lammers and Dana Sroka from women’s soccer were honored as Big 

South Conference Graduate Fellowship Recipients. 

Student-athletes, coaches, and staff volunteered for many campus and community outreach programs such as 

Eliada Home, Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon, Senior Olympic Games, Pink Zone, Manna Food Bank, 

Special Olympics and others. The Side-Out Foundation presented Women’s Volleyball with the 2010 

Philanthropic Achievement Award for raising over $1,000 for the Dig Pink Cancer Program. 

Improvements to facilities included the dedication of the Sherrill Center which houses the Kimmel Arena, the 

resurfacing of the Karl Straus Track, the renovation of the Sports Medicine Room and Offices, and the 

dedication of the Bulldog Tennis Courts at the Crowne Plaza Resort. 

Whether you are a fan, friend, student-athlete, faculty member, or another stakeholder, you play an integral 

role in helping to achieve the Bulldog vision of becoming “Champions in Athletics, Leaders in Life”. Thank you

UNC ASHEVILLE ATHLETICS 

MISSION STATEMENT 

UNC Asheville is a distinctive public liberal arts institution. The Department of Athletics 

seeks to sponsor a competitive, broad-based, fiscally-sound and ethically responsible NCAA 

Division I athletics program. 

The hallmarks of our athletics program are compassion, fairness, honesty, respect, 

responsibility, and sportsmanship. Adhering to these values helps create a culture of 

excellence that emphasizes academics, community service, inclusion, and integrity for our 

fans, staff, and student-athletes. A successful, well-run athletics program also builds pride in 

and support for the University among the citizens of Asheville and Buncombe County and 

among students, faculty, staff and alumni. 

Our focus is on the development of our student-athletes as "Champions in Athletics and 

Leaders in Life", starting from recruitment and continuing beyond graduation. Our 

expectation is that the combination of a strong, liberal arts education combined with multidimensional 

athletics experiences will foster long-term community and professional 

accomplishments by our student-athletes after they graduate.

• Posted a 15-37 record, 7-20 in BSC. 

• Ended Coastal Carolina’s 32 game winning 

streak with a 3-2 victory over the nationally 

ranked Chanticleers and ended up winning the 

three game series.

first time in program’s history.

Scholarship endowments provide a solid foundation for UNC Asheville athletics, 

seeking to fund the athletics scholarship grant-in-aid program through 

investment returns. We currently have 11 endowed scholarships.

Bulldog Athletic Association 

Background: 

The mission of the Bulldog Athletic Association is to provide the scholarship funds necessary 

to support the UNC Asheville Athletics Program. Our goal is to provide the $1.7 million dollars 

annually that Athletics would require to fulfill our NCAA scholarships. 

Your gift enables UNC Asheville Athletics to recruit and retain student-athletes who will 

succeed in the athletics arena, the classroom and the community. We are committed to 

developing “Champions in Athletics and Leaders in Life”. 

Bulldog Athletic Association Sponsored Events: 

• BARK Initiative- Community initiative to promote UNC Asheville Bulldogs Athletics and 

encourage participation. 

• 2010 Eddie Bidenbach Golf Tournament- Eddie Biedenbach Golf Tournament raises funds 

for scholarships. This year’s event was held at The Cliffs in Walnut Cove where local players 

got the opportunity to play with celebrities. A silent auction and awards dinner was held 

in the clubhouse. 

• 2011 Wine Gala- The wine gala was held at The Fresh Market in April 2011. Attendees 

tasted different wines from around the world with various foods. A silent auction was held 

that included a charter flight, restaurant gift certificates, artwork, etc. 

• 2011 Dave Hart Golf Tournament- Dave Hart Golf Tournament is an opportunity to raise 

funds for scholarships. This year the event was held at Kenmure Country Club in Flat Rock 

with a silent auction and awards dinner.

Facilities 

• Crowne Plaza Tennis Center- The Crowne Plaza Tennis Resort located five 

minutes from campus became home to the UNC Asheville Bulldog Tennis 

Teams in 2009-10. The center has six indoor courts and six outdoor courts 

which gives the Bulldogs one of the best facilities in the southeast. 

• Greenwood Baseball Field- The field opened in 1988 and has a seating 

capacity of 1,000. Currently, the field can only host day games due to the 

absence of field lights. An agreement with the City of Asheville allows the 

Bulldogs to utilize McCormick Field for several home games. 

• Greenwood Soccer Field- The field opened in 1989 and has a seating capacity 

of 1,000. Currently, the field can only host day games due to the absence of 

field lights. 

• Justice Center- The Justice Center opened in 1963 and will remain the home 

for the Women’s Volleyball team with a seating capacity of 1,200. 

• Kimmel Arena- The arena will open in 2011-12. This facility will have a 

seating capacity of 3,200 for basketball games, and will be the new home for 

Men’s and Women’s Basketball. 

• Karl Straus Track- The track and field area is currently being renovated. A lack 

of funding has prevented the completion of the field house which will include 

storage, concessions, and restrooms.
