Activities
There are a host of activities to choose from in Offaly. You can enjoy a
relaxing walk through a heather covered bog or a short nature trail
through forest parks with picnic and play areas. In the Slieve Bloom
Mountains looped walks range from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes.
Cycle paths run along bog tracks and back roads with well marked paths.
Anglers can choose from rivers, lakes and a canal, while golfers are
catered for with several excellent courses. Horse-riding and trekking are
available on farm and forest trails as well as at equestrian centres.

to and from major cities and towns. Trains run daily from
Tullamore and Clara to Dublin (journey time is approx 70
minutes) and west to Galway (90 minutes). Regular daily
bus services operate to towns such as Birr, Banagher and
Edenderry. Some villages are served by Bus Éireann or private
operators. Train and bus services coalesce at Cormac Street in

A warm welcome awaits all walkers who come to Offaly. The variety of walks
range from waymarked routes such as the Offaly Way and the Pilgrim Path to the
Grand Canal Way that runs through the centre of the county from Edenderry to
Shannonharbour. Looped walks in the magnificent Slieve Bloom Mountains start
with short routes of a few kilometers. Trails in the mountains go through many
glens or follow river valleys to historic sites. Nature and short walking trails also
run through forest parks with picnic and play areas for children.
