26 SuperBikeA 1802cc boxer twin — thelargest ever built by BMW — isa central focus point of the R18 and the shape harks back tothe 1936 BMW R5.As we pulled away, I was wonderingif BMW had not thrown to muchtechnology into the bike and takenaway a little what makes bikes likethis charming, was it put togetherwith too many guys wearing whitecoats and reporting to the boss-manabove them. Luckily, I can reportback that everyone at the factorywho were responsible for puttingthis project together are all passionatebikers, so I can report backthat I found very little fault with this,BMW’s second attempt at the cruisermarket. I say 2nd because rememberthe 1200 C that they used in the BondMovie with Pierce Brosnan. Funnilyenough that bike never took off andnever sold well enough for it to becarried on in production but ask anyof the bike buyers now, if one comesavailable it gets picked up immediatelyfor handsome money.Our route for the ride was anambitious 300km round trip startingin Stellenbosch around to Ceres,Franshoek, Rooi Els and then backagain. I say ambitious as there is nowind protection, the riding positionis one of street cruiser but luckily forus Cape Town was showing off withawesome weather.The engine, a 1802cc air oiledcooled boxer twin has incrediblytorque at very low revs, not in TriumphRocket 3 territory but the figurestalk for themselves, almost 130Nm at just off idle at 1750rpm and itbuilds to 158 Nm at 3000rpm. Poweris only 91 HP at 4650 rpm but thecharacter of the engine lends itself toshort shifting. TC and ABS is standardas is heated handlebars, cruisecontrol and 3 riding modes called,Rock and Roll and Rain. I preferredRock which is the quicker delivery.At idle I loved the way it pulled to theright with engine blips, very traditionalBMW boxer with added oomph.The bike being BMW lends itselfto good handling and this was myonly bug bear, the bikes handling isgood which gives the rider confidencebut as soon as you get it a little overit starts scraping the foot-pegs alittle pre-maturely I thought, and itwas not just me, all of the journalistswere scraping to the extent that youactually wind your neck in a little asyou feel it might push you wide in afew corners to cause a problem, and Iremind myself again that it is a cruiser,so take it easy.In summary, do I think BMWhave this second take at the Cruisermarket right. Well it’s a gorgeouslymade, easy to ride big capacity cruiserwith heritage, so the only thingactually standing in its way is that itis not made in America, but for therest they have it down 100% correctly.It ticks all the boxes and only timewill tell, but I bet Harley is not overlyexcited because this is a formidablealternative offer to the Milwaukeebrand .
