Side Trip:

Thanksgiving is past, Christmas is coming.

That means we are in the season

of Advent.

Watching a holiday movie in early

November, I cringed when one of the

characters explained

in a phone call to

her father that the

mountainside resort

she was staying at was

fully booked during

Advent, from before

Thanksgiving through

the 12th day of January.

What editor let that

ridiculous explanation

slip past?

Advent is a Christian

liturgical season

of waiting and preparing for Christ’s birth.

If you grew up attending church and Sunday

School, you know this from the ritual

Sunday morning lighting of the candles on

the Advent wreath.

Our kids had an Advent calendar with

tiny pieces hidden behind each door.

After we read the paragraph for that day

they could hang the character on the story

board. The pieces didn’t always end up

where they were intended — like a sheep

suspended in the sky where the star should

have been, or the manger appearing a full

week earlier than it should have.

But they knew the story and knew that

eventually the baby Jesus would end up in

the manger — the real meaning of Christmas.

Advent calendars are something of a “hot

ticket” this year. The Advent wine calendar

at one national chain sold out on the first

day it was available. Chocolate, cheese,

tea and even makeup are items I’ve seen

featured on adult versions, while Disney,

Harry Potter, “Star Wars” and unicorns have

surfaced on the youth varieties.

All great marketing opportunities, I suppose,

but amid all of this, I hope we still

find a place for Jesus.
