N A I heard that you were talking sh!t

And you didn’t think that I would hear it

People hear you talking like that,

getting everybody fired up

So I’m ready to attack, gonna lead the pack

Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out

That’s right, put your pom-poms down,

getting everybody fired up

Few times I’ve been around that track

So it’s not just gonna happen like that

BEWARE!

there are

bananas

afoot

From slapstick comedy to Mario

Kart, slipping on a banana peel is

a trope seen throughout popular

media. Before it became a funny

gag, rotten banana peels were

actually seen as quite dangerous.

Since they were so cheap, when

bananas hit New York City in the

mid-19th century, everyone was

EATING THEM.

Unfortunately, most people

suffered from a lack of public

sanitation and threw their

GARBAGE IN THE STREETS...

making their

ROTTEN, SLIPPERY PEELS

a public hazard and

a powerful symbol for

“poor manners” and poverty.

the lady in the

tutti frutti hat

The Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat by

Carman Miranda eroticized the banana

and upset American viewers due to its

blatant sexual undertone. This song, as

well as Carman Miranda herself, is viewed

as a stereotype of Brazilian culture that

plays into the eroticism of “exotic”

cultures through the phallic association

of the banana. This also influenced and

jumpstarted the racist depiction of the

Chiquita Banana mascot that used

harmful stereotypes based on Carmen

Miranda’s image, bizarrely using both

eroticized portrayals of the fruit and

racist associations to sell more bananas.
