See more of Europe with Belmond
In 1977 Belmond’s founder, James B Sherwood, purchased two
vintage train carriages at a Monte Carlo aucCon.
Recognising a renewed appeCte for sophisCcated travel, he searched
far and wide to unearth stately rail relics in private gardens, museums
and railway sidings. Cars from famous vintage trains, including Le
Train Bleu and the Rome Express, deserved a noble return to service,
but required a specialised level of cramsmanship to be restored.
Luckily a handful of arCsans were found for the task, and they began
the painstaking process of returning the carriages to their former
glory. Following years of careful restoraCon, the iconic midnight-blue
cars finally rolled onto the rails in 1982, ready to escort guests in
peerless luxury on a classic journey between London and Venice

ELEVATED FRENCH CUISINE
Gastronomy
Gastronomy Designed by
Three Michelin-star
YannickAlléno
Under the expert eye of acclaimed French chef Yannick Alléno,
the gastronomic visionary behind all the restaurants, the
resort's cuisine draws inspiraCon from across the globe.
Located on the furthest Cp of The Palm’s
West Crescent, One&Only The Palm offers
guests the chance to leave the bustling city
behind and enter an exclusive island
enclave. Complete with its own private
marina and accessible by boat or via a
winding driveway, this elegant retreat
might be minutes from the heart of Dubai,
but it feels like a million miles away.
Inspired by the architecture of Andalusia’s
Moorish palaces, One&Only The Palm’s
modern Arabesque design curates a feeling
of calm sanctuary that celebrates the

accompaniment to One&Only The Palm’s
ultra-luxury surroundings, three Michelinstar

the elite circle of the world’s greatest
chefs, Alléno is known for his passion to
create, innovate, taste and play with
ingredients in order to elevate them to

Arabian flair and jeNy-side sunset dining,
One&Only The Palm offers a diverse array
of dining experiences for every mood. The

mezze is created from prime ingredients
alongside fresh seafood and the finest cuts

The extensive menu features everything

ZEST Live Kitchen Chef Yannick Alléno
Building on techniques honed in the kitchens of
France that won him the highest honours in the
cooking world, STAY by Yannick Alléno is fine
dining at its most playful. TradiConal cooking
methods are married with modern culinary
advancements to create a seasonally evolving
menu of signature dishes and tasCng menus.
From creaCve starters such as ‘LangousCne
flirCng with a crystallised rose’, to the finest
milk-fed lamb maturated for 12 days in a salt
moss cave, the dining experience at STAY
exceeds expectaCons. The dramaCc
monochrome dining room sCcks to a paleNe of
black, bronze and silver – with splashes of rich
burgundy and high Cmbre walls for a touch of
theatre. Baroque black crystal chandeliers
suspended from vaulted ceilings cast a gentle
spotlight on Yannick’s wiNy dishes and highlight
the intenConal lack of stuffiness in service.
InteracCve culinary experiences encourage
guests to immerse themselves further into the
STAY by Yannick Alléno way, be it at the Pastry
Library, where guests assist the Chef De
PaCsserie in creaCng their own desserts, or the
private dining area complete with signature
dishes, pastries and exclusive wine list. Perched
above the Arabian Gulf, 101 Dining Lounge and

menu, the concept takes inspiraCon from the
renowned arCst Damien Hirst’s exhibiCon,

Every aspect – from the intricately designed ‘fish

FIVE OF THE WORLD’S
BEST LUXURY HOTELS
FOR DESIGN LOVERS
Noka Camp, Lapalala Wilderness Reserve,
northern South Africa
Safari lodges tend to plump for one of two
aestheCcs - either the dark wood and brass
Victoriana of a bygone expediConary era, or the
rusCc Cmber-and-fabric look, in the earthy hues
of the savannah. Both can be uNerly enchanCng,
but neither can claim to be at the culng edge
of design. Noka Camp, by contrast, fuses
modern architecture with a bold approach to
interior design. The canvas roof on each cabin is
a nod to tradiCon, but beneath them sits a
glass-fronted cabin packed with clean lines,
contemporary furniture and bold colours that
complement the landscape rather than merely
blending in with it. This is the first property from
Lepogo Lodges, which says it will offset every
guest’s carbon footprint and return every penny
of profit to conservaCon projects in Lapalala
Wilderness Reserve.

The five-star hotel is Park Hyaf's first

the ambience is a lot more restrained,
with an elegant, neutral paleNe of creams

the bustling city outside. Because of the

Of the manifold talents behind Four Seasons Hotel

he is hardly the star of his show. “Ah – that would

clientele is very sensiCve to the flowers and the

“We are very o`en congratulated for our

Flowers are “a source of emoZons and good

local floral producers, especially from around
Geneva, for rare plants, the beNer to maintain

Without a doubt, Singapore packed with many people.
Here, spaces are limited while populaCon is increasing
year by year. Yet even with these limitaCons, this small
country in Asia is home to some of the world’s most
unique looking architectural buildings. We have made a
selecCon of outstanding architecture that this dense
urban city offers.

in the sea
A floaWng dome of light and shade
The centrepiece of Nouvel’s vision is a huge silvery dome that appears to float above the museum-city.
Despite its apparent weightlessness, the dome weighs around 7,500 tonnes (similar to the Eiffel Tower in
Paris). Inspired by the cupola, a disCncCve feature in Arabic architecture, Nouvel’s dome is a complex,
geometric structure of 7,850 stars. These stars are repeated at various sizes and angles in eight different
layers. As the sun passes above, its light filters through the perforaCons in the dome to create an
enchanCng effect within the museum, known as the ‘rain of light'. This tribute to nature is inspired by the
palm trees of Abu Dhabi. Their leaves filter and somen the bright sunlight from above to project a dappled
paNern on the ground.
“A welcoming world serenely combining light
and shadow, reflecZon and calm. It aims to
belong to a country, to its history, to its
geography – without being a simple
interpretaZon. And emphasise a fascinaZon with
unusual discoveries.” Louvre Abu Dhabi architect
Jean Nouvel. The Museum is surrounded by
water, where visitors can arrive by land or sea.
Just like wandering the narrow streets of an
Arabian medina, visitors can explore the 55
buildings, of which 23 are galleries. They are
architecturally inspired by the low-rise homes of
the region. Along the exterior walkways, Visitors
can take a break, think about and discuss the
artworks, as well as enjoy the ever-changing
relaConship between sun, sea, art and
architecture.

culture
In 79 AD, the erupCon of Mount Vesuvius covered the
ancient Roman city of Pompeii with a thick layer of ash
and volcanic debris. Frozen at the moment they were
buried, the city and its inhabitants were extraordinarily
well preserved and Pompeii now offers invaluable insight
into life in ancient Rome. This remarkable site has been
excavated since the eighteenth century, and numerous
archaeological treasures brought to light (the public
buildings and private houses of the city as well as
sculptures, frescoes, decoraCve and cram objects, etc.).
Some of the discoveries are very recent – two buildings
have been found during the last two years. The exhibiCon
not only presents the archaeological finds, but enhances
the experience by taking visitors on a unique immersive
journey to the heart of Pompeii. Thanks to 3D
reconstrucCons, ultra-HD 360 projecCons and sound
effects, visitors explored the Roman city at the height of
its splendour and relived the moment when tragedy
struck.

Egypt unveils scores of
ancient coffins, statues
found in Saqqara
EgypCan officials have announced the discovery of at least 100 ancient coffins – some with mummies
inside – and some 40 gilded statues in a vast pharaonic necropolis south of the capital, Cairo. Colourful,
sealed sarcophagi and statues that were buried more than 2,500 years ago were displayed on Saturday
in a makeshim exhibit at the feet of the famed Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara.
The Saqqara site is part of the
necropolis at Egypt’s ancient
capital of Memphis that includes
the famed Giza Pyramids, as well
as smaller pyramids at Abu Sir,
Dahshur and Abu Ruwaysh. The
ruins of Memphis were designated
a UNESCO World Heritage site in
the 1970s.

LUXES
Exhibition
Luxes , this winter’s exhibiCon at the
Musée des Arts DécoraCfs, in Paris, isn’t
only about travels though. It explores
percepCons of luxury throughout the
ages and from all corners of the world.
During this pandemic, it felt like a great
luxury just to be able to visit such a
fabulous exhibiCon. For a short while, I
dreamed of far away ages and places, of
palaces and fesCviCes, of dazzling
dresses and Louis VuiNon cases. I forgot
all about facemasks, restricCons and
diseases. The exhibiCon is organised in
chronological order, showing some 100
objects. It starts with ancient objects
from Egypt, Iran and Greece; the oldest
piece being a zoomorphic hedgehog vase
from approximately 3500 – 3100 BC.
These artefacts illustrate the
archaeological perspecCve of luxury and
show that man has always been more
than a mere “assembly of atoms”. The
Romans inserted the concept of oZum,
leisure, in the form of arCcles, such as a
beauCful deck of cards, a backgammon
board and decorated manuscripts that
are displayed. The 16 th and 17 th
centuries are represented with mainly
French court objects in silver and gold.
However, from the same era, I preferred
the Japanese art of kintsugi, broken
ceramics repaired with gold leaf, and the
Chinese pagoda barometerthermometer.
Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
A great novelty in this magnificent museum is the
opening up of a room that’s been closed to the
visitors: the Art Nouveau wooden-panelled Salon
1900, designed for the 1900 Universal ExhibiCon. In
its footsteps followed fashion houses, with dresses
and jewellery from Dior, Chanel, Hermès and Louis
VuiNon just to menCon a few.
The exhibiCon finishes with contemporary luxury
items, clothes and designed furniture. That luxury is
seemingly determined by a logo or a brand name in
our modern world is obvious when one remembers
the queues of tourists outside some of Paris most
fashionable houses.
Luxes offers an ancient as well as contemporary
context to understand what makes luxury one of
the most singular and symbolic features of
civilizaCons. Paradoxically it also fits these strange
Cmes we live in now when mass-tourism is but a
memory and travel has once again become a luxury
only the very few can afford.
Time will tell if there will be a permanent shim of
perspecCve that some long for or if this period will
come and go and things will return to what they
were before Corona. However, the human taste for
beauty and luxury will surely prevail throughout the
ages. It seems to have been engraved in our genes,
as is pointed out in this fabulous exhibiCon.
