Series II: University of Chicago<br />

This series consists of material related <strong>to</strong> <strong>Edward</strong> <strong>Lowinsky</strong>'s administrative and teaching work at<br />

University of Chicago. It is organized in<strong>to</strong> two subseries:<br />

Subseries 1: Administration, contains correspondence, minutes, reports, manuscripts, notes,<br />

publications, pamphlets and broadsides from 1961-1985. This subseries documents <strong>Lowinsky</strong>'s<br />

involvement with departmental and university administrative matters. There are substantial files<br />

on <strong>the</strong> university's Selective Service policy and anti-draft demonstrations, including <strong>the</strong> 1966<br />

sit-in. Also reflected is <strong>Lowinsky</strong>'s influential role in <strong>the</strong> development of music collections in<br />

<strong>the</strong> university library. Files are arranged alphabetically by <strong>to</strong>pic or correspondent. Restricted<br />

administrative records have been transferred <strong>to</strong> Series X.<br />

Subseries 2: Teaching, consists of material from courses taught by <strong>Edward</strong> <strong>Lowinsky</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

Music Department. There are lecture notes, assignments, examinations, reading lists and syllabi.<br />

Files are arranged alphabetically by course name. Many files are undated or were compiled<br />

cumulatively over several years; however, most files date from circa 1961-1976. Files containing<br />

grades, letters of recommendation, and o<strong>the</strong>r evaluations of students have been transferred <strong>to</strong><br />

Series X.<br />

Additional correspondence with University of Chicago faculty, staff and students is in Series I:<br />

Subseries 1. Oversize materials, consisting of issues of <strong>the</strong> student newspaper Chicago Maroon,<br />

have been transferred <strong>to</strong> Series IX: Subseries 1. The newspapers date from 1962-1968, and<br />

contain articles on campus politics and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong>pics that were important <strong>to</strong> <strong>Lowinsky</strong>. Some of<br />

<strong>the</strong> newspapers contain letters or statements by <strong>Lowinsky</strong>.<br />
