Welcome to what is either mid- 

December or very late March. It’s 

been more difficult than usual 

getting into the ol’ Christmas 

Spirit this year, what with the 

looming threat of lockdowns and the Party 

Police storming into your 11-person gathering. 

People were arrested for buying turkeys that 

served 12 or more at Thanksgiving. In America. 

In 2020. But I know if we all band together, hold 

hands like those Whos down in Whoville, we 

can muster enough spirit to make it feel like a 

great Arbor Day. (Really, I’m fine. I figured I’d 

be long dead before I ever emptied my Netflix 

queue, which now looks like a real possibility. 

So that’s a positive, right?) [Weeps into coffee.] 

I was never really big on the Christmas 

parade. Sure, it was fun to mill about and see 

people you haven’t seen all year and pretend 

you were going to keep in touch the following 

year but you knew that was a lie, didn’t you? I 

always found it overlong and underfed. But I did 

miss all the lawn chairs lined up on Broadway 

like Christmas-y tombstones. (Look, I’m trying 

here…) 

While I’m in such a good mood, I present 

to you the Super-Bummer of the Week: For 

a month I’ve been hyping the Super Friends 

mash-up of TNT (me and Tim Joyce) with 

Nancy Malcun and Camille Peruto, which 

was to have occurred last Saturday. Alas, the 

elements turned and we were rained out. 

Well, blown out, because who doesn’t love a 

pre-Christmas nor’easter? Makes me all warm 

and fuzzy. While it was a real drag to cancel, 

we at least have Nancy for the next two 

Saturdays, assuming there isn’t a tidal wave or 

volcanic eruption. (Camille, being massively 

popular, is unavailable, though I foresee future 

gigs with these two songbirds. Gigs that would 

be a real… tribute… to their talents.) 

My man Jamie Savarese served my son 

Jackson and I a delicious breakfast at George’s 

Place Saturday. It took me several minutes to 

recognize him because (A) these stupid masks 

and (B) he wasn’t in his usual kitchen scrubs. 

Also, he moved and walked a little male model-y, 

his hair tossed over his brow. It’s a good 

look, keep it up. I don’t get to George’s enough, 

but it’s excellent and if you go I recommend the 

traditional eggs benedict and stopping for cash 

on the way, because they don’t take credit cards 

and the walk to the ATM in Congress Hall in a 

freezing headwind can be… perilous. 

Well, I really did it. I really made the nicest 

girl in the world, Nicole James, sad-cry 

last week. Unintentionally, of course, and she’s 

forgiven me, but if you want to make yourself 

feel about two inches tall, make Nicole James 

cry. That’ll do it. You know, maybe it’s time 

I stop writing this stupid article that doesn’t

to a rollicking start this week by 

forgetting to click-in the passenger 

side seatbelt before loading 

56 bundles of magazines on the 

seat. What’s the big deal? Well, the 

seat thought a very heavy person 

was sitting there so the seat belt 

warning chimed about every five 

minutes. I mean, nobody died, but 

it was pretty annoying. And now 

I know precisely how many times 

it beeps. (eight slow, 40 fast. And 

now you can hear it, can’t you.) 

Pulled into Ocean First Bank 

in Villas to drop a bundle, noticed 

a sign on the door and got out to 

read it. Lobby closed until further 

notice due to Covid-19 precautions. 

This took all of 12 seconds. 

Or long enough for an angry old 

lady to pull in next to me and mutter 

“learn how to f*cking park” 

because I was blocking the handicapped 

spots. The Christmas spirit 

is really flowing this year, guys. 

My guy at Donut Connection, 

whose name I wrote down but 

lost somewhere because I’m a real 

journalist, is always in a fantastic 

mood and always hooks me up 

with a few donuts when I order my 

decaf. I can’t eat them, of course, 

which is psychological torture, but 

he doesn’t know that and I don’t 

want to make him feel bad. Plus, 

I score points with the wife and 

kids for bringing them donuts and 

I can’t afford to lose that gravy 

train. (But, really, thank you, it’s 

appreciated.) 

My oldest son Owen is 

binge-watching Nurse Jackie, which 

I first opposed as I thought it to 

be another hospital drama in the 

vein of ER and Grey’s Anatomy and, 

while there’s a little of that, it’s so 

much more. And every episode is 

about 25 minutes so we can kill 

a season in an afternoon. (Also, 

Coop is low-key the best character 

on that show.) Owen is also 

bingeing New Girl, which makes 

me want to smash the TV with 

a hammer. There’s only so much 

“adorkable” a man can tolerate. 

If you told me in 1982 that 

R.J. MacReady from The Thing 

(Kurt Russell in one of the very few 

perfect movies ever made) would 

become this generation’s Kris 

Kringle (The Christmas Chronicles 

on Netflix) I would have told you 

that sounds... just about right for 

one of the most underrated actors 

America has ever produced. I’d list 

all his stone-cold classics here but 

I only have so much space. I mean, 

Tombstone. Dude was in Tombstone. 

Shut it down. 

I try to impart upon my youngest 

on Henry my vast knowledge of 

Silver Age Philly Sports (late 70s to 

early 90s), and he digs my stories 

and odd YouTube clips I unearth of 

Dr. J or Randall Cunningham. But 

this modern era, in which there 

is no loyalty, from neither team 

nor player, means he has to suffer 

through watching has favorite 

team (Oklahoma City Thunder) 

trade his favorite player (Russell 

Wesbrook) to a decent team 

(Houston Rockets) that just traded 

him to probably the worst team in 

the league (Washington Wizards). 

Go team. 

Lastly this week, I am committed 

to producing a new work 

of fiction in 2021. Whether for 

these pages in serialized form or 

as a novel, I do not know. But it’ll 

be… something. The question 

is; what? An adaptation of my 

stage play, Sherlock Holmes and the 

Werewolf of London in the style of 

Arthur Conan Doyle? My homage 

to Armistead Maupin’s Tales 

of the City called, creatively, Tales 

of the Cape, a nostalgia piece set 

in 1993? Or a novelization of my 

previously published short story, 

The Boat, a WWII-set spy thriller? 

A smart man picks one. I am not a 

smart man. 

So, uh, sorry this week wasn’t 

so upbeat. I promise next week 

will be much happier. Like, 10% 

happier.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is one o 

those songs for me, until now. These two have 

composed their version o the song that makes 

you sit up and take notice. Their rendition 

nearly brought me to tears. Bravo to these two. 

Mirama’s Christmas Test — read by Stephanie 

Garrett, written by A. Thomas Fortune — tells 

the story o a strong schoolteacher who gives 

her iancé a unique Christmas challenge. Will 

he put aside his own ego to meet her demand 

this Christmas Eve? 

Barry Tischler (vocals/guitar) and Tom 

Naglee (iddle) perform Santa Claus Is Coming 

to Town and Silver Bells. Barry and Tom play 

all around town so it’s good to allow them to 

come into your home for the holidays. James 

Rana performs Mark Twain’s classic, Letter 

from Santa Claus. The Knapps and Honeyhawks 

both return for one more song each, and Gayle 

Stahlhuth performs A Great Tree by Zona Gale. 

You need this holiday spirit — especially 

this year. There is so much local talent in 

this production, Yuletide Tales is like a visit 

with family complete with stories and music.

The Old Fogey 

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur 

We are not, as a city, especially well 

placed to laugh at climate change. 

Oh, I know, we have our plans 

for a 10-foot seawall around the 

entire perimeter, and yes, Cape 

May does, as a geological oddity, f loat (we sit 

on a thick layer o pumice stone). But still, it 

would not be ideal for a beach town to not have 

a beach, or to require visitors to drive by boat 

or helicopter. So we will do our bit in the ight 

against global warming, and ban all motorized 

vehicles, apart from those electricity-powered 

ones favored by those earnest young antiquers 

who come to town to pretend not to know the 

value o old furniture in our barn sales. 

I miss the days when the loudest noise 

was the cry o the seabirds, the clip-clop o 

horses’ hooves and the shriek o oiled young 

men slapping each other’s bare buttocks with 

beach towels. And I am driven to incoherent 

rage in summertime when it takes me 90 minutes 

to cross the road without falling under the 

wheels o a barge-sized car full o credulous 

Shoebies. 

O course, that does give us some unique 

challenges, such as how to transport the thousands 

o eager tourists from the train station 

just over the canal (more on that at a later 

time) to the beaches, eateries and hotels where 

we delicately separate them from their crumpled 

dollar bills. We switly ruled out walking: 

by my calculations, Shoebies can manage 

around a mile per hour, and I will not have our 

fair city resemble the retreat from Moscow. 

Horses are an option, as are alpacas from 

local farms, but we would need around 10,000, 

and the manure would make it a summer to 

remember. There was talk o reviving the old 

Mechanical Walkway, not dissimilar to those 

in modern airports, though the original Cape 

May one, whilst a steam-powered marvel, 

was tricksy — i memory serves, a runaway 

f lywheel caused it to speed up to 30mph and 

deposit a few hundred people o the end o 

the Point. Also, the idea has been mooted that 

we launch or much-delayed monkey-pedicab 

scheme, which would allow us to combine our 

twin passions o animal rescue and cycling. 

The trials were a success last time, save for that 

unfortunate incident with the passing banana 

truck. Also, the hurled scat. 

So we are excitedly inessing the details 

o the perfect solution. I cannot go into exact 

speciics: suice o to say that those o you 

who love trampolines will be beside yourselves 

with excitement, and that we will be 

utilizing empty lots every 100 yards between 

the canal bridge and the beach.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, be the judge of your holiday season! 

At the risk o landing on the Naughty 

list, I’m going to say it — Santa Claus 

is hypercritical. I know that judging 

is a big part o his job, but have you 

seen Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? 

Santa is downright rude to Rudolph and the 

residents o the Island o Misit Toys — his 

hiring practices probably violate the North 

Pole’s version o the ADA. This year, when the 

world’s rugrats are having a rough time, I hope 

he’s more tolerant. Kids are wearing their 

masks, missing their friends and putting up 

with Zoom school. Some slack, please, Santa. 

Santa’s helpers share their boss’ judgmental 

nature, especially that El on the Shelf, 

who wields unreasonable power throughout 

the buildup to Christmas. He may show up 

to monitor the children’s behavior, but he’s 

also judging parents on their ability to stretch 

the Christmas magic over an entire month. 

Shelie — the El assigned to Elaine’s — keeps 

wandering of, and it’s up to participants in 

their walking tour to ind him. Mrs. Claus 

searched the entire North Pole with no success, 

and she needs help. Tours run every 

Saturday through December 26 from 1 to 5. 

Tickets are $25, beverages permitted and this 

“open air theater” event is suitable for all 

ages. Group sizes are limited and masks are

A little light judgment can be festive, 

especially when you’re judging holiday lights.

gussied up for Christmas, and the judges in 

the “Light Up Cape May” contest will award

Olde Fashioned Display, Judges’ Choice and

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

You can learn a great deal about 

birds by watching your feeders — 

and enjoy hours of entertainment. 

Different species have different 

feeding techniques. House Finches 

find an auspicious perch, cling and chow 

down. Titmice practice a grab-and-go style 

— grab a sunflower seed, fly off to a secluded 

perch. Blackbirds like crowds, the more the 

merrier. Blue Jays want the feeder all to themselves. 

Upon arrival, they scream out a bogus 

warning call that scatters the competition, 

then gobble down seeds as fast as they can 

before a jay higher up on the social ladder 

displaces them. Woodpeckers are late risers. 

Squirrels? They are guts wrapped in fur. 

The furry-tailed tree rat can break a modest 

seed budget through pure esophageal zeal. 

Our trick is to have one sunflower feeder away 

from others that squirrels can adopt as their 

own. Or scatter decorative corn cob halves 

beneath feeders. They grab a half and cart it 

away before another squirrel can claim it. 

There are a few finicky feeders who favor 

food items that many backyard bird enthusiasts 

forget to offer. Mockingbirds and robins 

like raisins and fruit, Suet cakes are favored by 

woodpeckers, nuthatches and Carolina Wren. 

Don’t forget water — refill bird baths 

when dry or frozen. Many birds bathe in cold 

weather. The American Robin is a compulsive 

bather and common winter resident. If you 

have holly berries, you have robins. Feral 

cats can be a challenge. Place feeders up four 

feet and clear concealing cover from below. 

Northern songbirds do not typically deal with 

feline predators so have no innate defense. 

Bird catching hawks are a part of the 

package. Concentrate on small birds — attract 

hawks that feed on them. You are not causing 

the birds to be killed, only killed where you 

will witness it. Your neighborhood Sharpshinned 

Hawk is going to feed twice a day one 

way or another. Try to keep feeders away from 

glass windows and doors. Fleeing birds and 

in-coming hawks strike glass with enough 

force to cause death 50 percent of the time. 

Screens help soften the impact, but window 

decals of hawk silhouettes are not as effective. 

Find other bird feeding tips from the 

experts at Cape May Bird Observatory or go 

to 701 East Lake Drive and watch the birds at 

their feeders. It’s cheaper than buying your 

own seed and staff can help with identification. 

Test drive the latest in binoculars while 

there. The holidays are coming and Cape

feeders for sale.

HARLEY is a three-year-old, 75 lb. boy who 

likes to think he’s a lap dog. He came to the 

shelter when his owners could no longer care 

for him. Harley enjoys taking walks, has great 

leash manners and requires a grain free diet. 

He loves to be pet and would make a wonderful 

companion for a family who would allow 

him to be the only pet. 

DIEGO is a very well-mannered and loving 

five-year-old boy. He has wonderful leash 

skills and knows basic commands including 

“stay, down, shake, sit and wait.” He came to 

the shelter when his owner moved in with a 

family member who had another dog. Diego 

loves people and would be best i adopted into 

a family with no other dogs or cats. 

ARTHUR is a 23-pound, older boy who came 

to the shelter as a stray. His sweet spirit is 

unmatched, he loves to wander the yard walks 

well on his leash. Arthur has arthritis and is 

deaf, but he is up to date on all vaccinations 

with his skin improving every day. He needs a 

quiet home with someone willing to give him 

the love and care he needs.

MISTLETOE AND CLEO are a great pair 

looking for a new home. They came to the 

shelter as orphans when their mother died. A 

very sweet foster cat raised them as her own 

and they are housetrained. Mistletoe and Cleo 

are playful kittens who need a home by Christmas.

seven months old and has been passed around 

home to home. She is a very sweet and calm
