Page 4A THE BEACON January 2021 Music Legends- It All Started with High School Band Continued from page 1A The Indian, Eddy Arnold, and other national entertainers passing through the city. The band flourished and remained a priority for its hardworking members who each had their day jobs until World War II crashed the party. Kenzie Bentle played the drums for the first time when he was in fourth grade, and the rest, as they say, is history! His love for the drums continued as he played for his brother’s band, The Harmony Lads, from 1957-1960. Charlie Green, the band director at North Dearborn High School, asked Mr. Bentle to take the place of Tom Lane of Tom and The Dukes when Mr. Lane joined the army. Mr. Bentle shares “I was thrilled but didn’t have a driver’s license yet and had to con my parents or someone into taking me and my drums to the job at first, but I was determined!” Sadly, Tom Lane was later killed in France during his service. Later Nick Ullrich and Willie Childers, both from Aurora, joined the band. This time also coincided with Mr. Bentle’s time spent in basic training for the Army and the subsequent four years Year Around Tax and Accounting Services he bravely spent serving our country in The National Guard. The next venture Mr. Bentle embarked upon was the show band, Cops and Robbers, where he continued playing the drums, singing, and even playing a little bit of trumpet. Cops and Robbers played in different night clubs around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Luck was struck when an agent scouting talent in one of those clubs discovered the band, which led to them signing with a national agency out of Buffalo, New York! Mr. Bentle took a break from teaching at Moores Hill High School to hit the road with his band. Cops and Robbers toured all over the United States and spent as many as forty-eight out of the fifty-two weeks in a year on the road. Now when I see and hear a student doing it, that smile and feeling I had as a teacher comes back to me again and again.” In fact, Mr. Bentle followed in the footsteps of his band teacher, Charlie Green, as both graduated from the prestigious College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. SEIMA also strives to highlight our area’s deep musical heritage. Charlie Green was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003 and Kenzie Bentle was inducted in 2018. The SEIMA board is comprised of local musicians and reviews public nominations for the Hall of Fame. Since its inception, one hundred thirty-three area musicians have been recognized. SEIMA is dedicated to promoting music awareness, appreciation, and education. Mr. Bentle explains, “The Association will be starting the SEIMA PROJECT in 2021, with this project, we will be giving cash awards and performance opportunities to up and coming young musicians in our area.” The fact that both Charlie Green and Kenzie Bentle inspired their students is evident since many of them got their start in the high school band. Brian Biggin Noble, a member of the outlaw country southern rock band, The Renegades, was a 1991 East Central High School graduate. He was part of the “Marching Three Hundred,” a term coined to describe the East Central High School Band in its hay day under the direction of Mr. Bentle. The East Central High School band was so popular that they led the way in the Findlay Market Opening Day Parade and played large rallies for thousands of people on Fountain Square. Mr. Noble, a self-taught musician, plays guitar and trumpet and is the lead vocalist for his band. Renegades members include Russell Griffith on bass, Steve Ludwig on drums, Randy Peak lead guitar and harmonica, Steve Gulasy on sax, and Art Caddell on lead guitar. The Renegades got their start playing on a farm in Sunman in 1994. Twenty-six years later, they are stronger than ever and their following has exploded. The Renegades play all sorts of events in our area including festivals, dances, and benefits. The strong local following has led to greater opportunities as the national stage came calling. The likes of blues rock singersongwriter Delbert McClinton and southern rock band Molly Hatchett took notice and requested that The Renegades perform with them. Their big show came when The Renegades got on the bill with American rock band, Marshall Tucker and played a sold-out show to two thousand people at the famed Renfro Valley Entertainment Center in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. Amazingly half of that crowd were Renegades fans! The band’s national success led to artists encouraging the band to record their own song called “Pop’s Flag.” Whenever it is played at The Renegades’ show, it always receives a standing ovation. The song and a subsequent CD were recorded right here in Bright, Indiana. All of these years, The Renegades have kept the music of other artists alive. Having their song out there and the doors of the industry finally opened is amazing. Not that all the great local shows and venues are not amazing because it has helped groom us to what we have become today, but touching someone new is priceless.” This year was set to be an action-packed year for the group, but that all changed. The Renegades are a resilient bunch and aren’t giving up. They are working hard behind the scenes and soon they will be back out there better than ever! The rest of the world is busy discovering what we locals have always known. Brian Biggin Noble was inducted into the Southeastern Indiana Musician’s Hall of Fame in 2017. Who would have ever dreamed that small town USA would have such a glorious and rich history of music flowing through its veins. And as we all know, our area is not like others with our strong sense of community and purpose. Mr. Bentle said it best, “I always viewed it as many individuals working together to accomplish something great. My band director, Charlie Green had done the same. Everyone contributed something. My job was to provide the opportunities for success. Then, just loosen the reins and let them create. So many of them found out so much about themselves in the process. So many times, with my back to the audience, I was smiling in amazement and joy about what was happening.” More stories of musical legends from our community will be shared in an upcoming edition of The Beacon.
