overcoming hereditary enmity and becomingmutually respectful and curious partners is anexperience that belongs to all Europeans.Dialogue between young people, getting toknow each other and themselves better anddeveloping mutual respect, encouragingcooperation across borders is also RYCO’smission and being able to contribute to it hasbeen and remains a wonderful experience.RYCO: Do you plan to become more involvedwith RYCO and if so in what kind ofprojects/activities?Frank Morawietz: Yes, I would like to continueand to deepen this cooperation with RYCO. Iwould like to contribute to strengthening theregional dialogue of young citizens also tostrengthen the dialogue with young citizensfrom France and Germany, to offer youngpeople time and space in projects, tostrengthen regional and European thinking. It isalso high time that the voice of the youngcitizens of the Western Balkans is heard in thedialogue on the future of the European ideaand on the future of European integration, justas the voice of young people from theEuropean Union is heard.Together with our colleagues from the YouthInitiative for Human Rights in Belgrade and withthe support of FGYO and the CrossborderFactory we have founded ‘Friends of RYCO’ tomake our contribution from outside RYCO toensure that it and the encounters of youngpeople continue to grow, so that such importantissues as intercultural competence anddealing with history have a permanent place inRYCO activities.I also think it is very important that thecooperation in the Governing Board of RYCO,the highest decision-making body of RYCO,consisting of six youth representatives and sixyouth ministers, is characterised by trust, aregional spirit and thinking and that they areencouraged again and again in theirresponsibility for RYCO and set an example ofregional thinking and acting. RYCO is a beaconof regional cooperation in the region but this isa constant and long-learning process, as theexample of the reconciliation between Franceand Germany showed us.Finally, it is important to keep not only thegovernments but also the parliaments regularlywell informed about RYCO’s activities and tomaintain a close dialogue. After all, theparliaments have ratified the Agreement on theEstablishment of RYCO.RYCO: What impresses you the most aboutRYCO’s vision for youth empowerment andcooperation in the Western Balkans?Frank Morawietz: Firstly, I am impressed by theRYCO team coming from all over the WesternBalkans working together at the Head Office inTirana and in the local branch offices. Workingtogether in such a team is a challenge thatshould not be underestimated.Then, RYCO’s work with the young people andthe partner organisations is also alwaysforward looking and it sets new standards. Thisalso means constantly questioning this workand reacting to new challenges. Since theprojects and the RYCO team are growing veryfast, I believe it will be an important challengefor RYCO and the Governing Board to not onlymaintain the political spirit of RYCO from thefounding days but to develop it further.Many young people in the Western Balkans arecurious and committed. They want to find theirplace and have a future in their societies, in theregion and in Europe. They want to help shapethe future and live in societies in which the ruleof law and democratic rights are not just onpaper. They want an economic perspective.They want to be free to decide how theirmobility looks like and not to decide this undereconomic, political or social pressure. This canonly succeed if young citizens can play aconcrete role in shaping their societies. It canonly succeed if they do so in a regional andEuropean way of thinking and cooperatingacross borders. RYCO offers importantstrengthening, encouragement and supporthere, if this regional and European esprit canbe further strengthened.100
