I was excited and hopefulwhen you first won the election in2016. Unfortunately, I don’t feelthe same way about this victory.I’m ambivalent about your secondterm, and the reasons are not difficultto find.In your first term, you knewyou would come back to seek ourvotes, yet the kind of governanceyou gave us was unimpressive, tosay the least. You practically calledour bluff. In 2024, you will notneed our votes. Some of your appointeeshave their political umbilicalcords tied to yourpresidency.They know that even if theNPP wins in the next election,they will have no chance of landinglucrative jobs. For such people,there is a lot of motivation toloot as much as they can and retireor venture into somethingelse.For this reason, your secondterm can get worse than we saw inthe first term. But it can also get•President Nana Akufo-Addobetter, Mr. President. Your secondterm can get better if youcare about your legacy. Since thedays of your predecessor, I havealways maintained that any idiotcan borrow money to build hospitalsor pay fees, especially whenthere is always an avenue topocket a chunk of it.One does not need to be a geniusof a leader to do that. For apresident seeking re-election, actingtough against delinquent andinfluential appointees is like killingthe tsetse fly that perches on thescrotum. But now, you’re freefrom those threats and politicalblackmail. So let’s see a bit of theAkufo-Addo that was marketed tous in 2016.Let us see the Akufo-Addowho is a believer of the rule oflaw, not one that believes and promotesthe rule of thuggery; anAkufo-Addo who believes inpress freedom, and not one thatbelieves only in press freedomfavourable to him. And finally, letus see a new NPP under yourleadership.Let us see the democratic andcivilised NPP of old, the one thatwas attractive to intellectuals butstill maintained its core base. Letus see the NPP that gives menand women of valour and principlesa chance, and not one thathas been hijacked rogues andquestionable characters because oftheir dubious wealth.If you remember my “Ogyam”epistle, I said you were becomingstronger, but the party was becomingweaker. A party foundedon the core principles of democracyand good governance shouldnot be using “North Korean”principles in dealing with andeliminating candidates who wantto either lead the party or contestfor parliament because they arenot the favourites of a few. In thiselection, the NPP voters haveshown the party “a little bit ofAtiwa” and I hope you and theparty will pick some useful lessonsfrom there.I wish you good luck andpledge my unalloyed support tomake your second term a success.I intend to support you not byjoining the innumerable courtiersof paid and unpaid praise-singersof the administration. Like thecharge given to the Prophet ofGod in Ezekiel 3:17, I intend topoint out to you what’s goingwrong.But if you do things worthy ofpraise and defending, I will notwithhold that from you as I havedone in the past.
