Rousse State Opera is one of the most significant cultural

phenomenon in Bulgaria.

Its creation was the result of a long cultural process that began in

Ruse more than a decade before the Liberation. A combination

of the desire for artistic expression, a longing for beauty, and a

thirst for high European culture, has meant that the citizens of Ruse

have imbued the opera with a formidable energy. This energy is still

present today and, despite all the trials, the ups and downs of the

city’s history, and the turbulent history of the country, the people

of Ruse will always seek beauty and never stop developing their

skills and the talents of their children via the influences of Western

Europe.

November 27th, 2019, marks the 70th anniversary of the official

nationalization and opening of the Rousse Opera. With this bookalbum,

we will look back even further in time and begin our

chronology thirty years earlier. Before the inspiring autumn of 1949,

the history of the opera in Ruse is marked by a spring - the spring of

1919, when on April 23rd, at exactly 9 pm, on the stage of the City

Theater, as written on the poster, was the premiere of the Bulgarian

opera "Kamen and Tsena” based on the poem “Gramada” by

Ivan Vazov. Remarkable in their enthusiasm and optimism, our

predecessors decided to put on an opera in Ruse in the aftermath

of the First World War, while the country was in the midst of a national

catastrophe. Knowing the power of music and performance to

change hearts and minds, they got to work bringing the people

of the city together and encouraging them to create something

beautiful!

THE TOWN OF RUSE is located on the high right bank of the Danube

River. It is one of the important cultural, commercial and industrial centers

of Bulgaria. The proximity of the river has been of great importance for

the development of the city from antiquity to the present day.

In the first century AD, the Roman fortress Sexaginta Prista - "Port of the

Sixty Ships" was founded. Under the name Ruschuk, the city became one

of the main administrative centers of the Ottoman Empire, which played

a key role in its economic and cultural development. Ruse is a place of

many firsts: the first railway in Bulgaria was built from Ruse to Varna, a

modern printing house was opened here, a newspaper was founded in

the city, and son. The city is also home to many consulates.

After the Liberation, Rousse was the largest city in the Principality of

Bulgaria with a rapidly developing economy and European appearance.

Because of the beautiful architecture of the buildings designed by

European and Bulgarian architects, Rousse is known as "The Little Vienna".

ОIn addition to many museums - historical, urban life, houses of

celebrities, the Pantheon of the Revival, and the remains of the Roman

fortress Sexaginta Prista - Ruse is home to the only National Museum of

Transport in Bulgaria.

In the vicinity of the city there are landmarks of world importance -

Rusenski Lom Nature Park, the remains of the medieval town of Cherven,

the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria and the rock-hewn Churches

of Ivanovo, a site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The bridge over the Danube River near Ruse was built in 1952-1954, and

still retains strategic importance.

Due to its rich cultural life, Ruse is considered one of the cultural capitals

of Bulgaria. The city hosts many festivals and forums - March Music Days,

Autumn Days of Art and Science, Festival "Scene by the River" and others.

It is the birthplace of man world-famous celebrities, including the only

Nobel laureate in Bulgarian literature, Elias Canetti.

The motto of Ruse is:

"City of the free spirit".

HISTORY OF THE OPERA As early as the 19th century, temporary

opera, choral and symphonic ensembles began to form in Ruse. This was a

result of having encountered European musical culture, which came to Ruse

along the Danube River. There are performances and fragments of various

titles with the participation of various choral formations and instrumental

ensembles. Some of these show strong ambitions to create serious opera

art, such as Wagner's “Tannhäuser” (1901), “Ernani” by Verdi (1904), “Faust”

by Gounod (1910), etc.

The first serious and permanent structure which performed opera

music was created in 1891, by Atanas Paunov and Triffon P. Triffonov - Music

Society “Lyra”. Later, various private musicals and opera companies formed

in the city. With varying levels of success, they presented some of the most

famous titles from the world of opera and literature, managing to arouse the

interest of the people of Ruse in the opera.

10

In 1919, as a result of the increasing popularity of opera, an Opera

Society was founded – an institution which, after various transformations,

we now know as the State Opera Ruse. The conductors of the compositions

were Dimitar Ivanov and Yordan Minkov, and the assistant director of the

Ruse Theater Kiril Georgiev, who remained in history under his pseudonym

Bacho Kiro. The premiere of the first opera “Kamen and Tsena” by Ivan

Ivanov and Ventseslav Kautsky, took place on April 23rd, 1919.

During the first years of the opera, dozens of performances by

Bulgarian composers took place, many of which are forgotten today.

Amongst these were “Tahirbegovitsa” by Dimitar Hadzhigeorgiev and

“Gergana“ by Maestro Georgi Atanasov - a performance embodying the

maestro’s interest in the historical period of 1929-1947, as well as various

operettas such as “Corneville's Bells”, “The King's Peacock”, “Strong as a

Turk”, and so on.

11

12

Serious operative activity remained very difficult and for this reason

over the years the Opera Society had to pause its activity on several

occasions. As a result of the new state policy, the Society was nationalized

in 1949, thus transforming into the “Public Opera - Ruse”. The first premiere

of the state opera was “La Traviata” by Verdi - on November 27th, 1949.

The conductor Konstantin Iliev, stage designing artist Asen Popov and the

stage director Dragan Kardzhiev left their mark on the development of the

theater.

In its first years as a state institution, Ruse Opera House was under

common administrative management with the Ruse Theater and was housed

in the Profit-Yielding Building. After the successful and highly renowned

performance of “Don Pasquale” by Donizetti, in 1952 Ruse Opera became a

completely independent administrative unit, with George Chendov sitting as

its first director.

By 1954, the main conductors of the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra

(Konstantin Iliev, Dobrin Petkov, Ruslan Raychev) were also conductors of the

Ruse Opera. From 1954-1955 Ruse Opera appointed its first major conductor

Romeo Raychev.

13

14

The time of 1955-1956 represented one of the key moments in the

history of the Ruse Opera. In 1955 the Ruse Opera performed its season in

Sofia with the titles “Les pêcheurs de perles” (The Pearl Fishers), “Cavalleria

rusticana”, Rigoletto, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” and the ballet “Rivals”

by Paul Härtel. In the same year, the new opera house - the emblem of the

city of Ruse, where the State Opera Ruse is housed until today - was built.

The first premiere in the new opera house took place on February 5th, 1956

“Eugene Onegin” by Tchaikovsky.

In 1958 the Ruse Opera formed a partnership, with the Romanian

National Opera in Bucharest, and a year later, with the Union of Composers

in Moscow. As a result, titles by a series of Russian and Soviet composers (such

as Prokofiev, Khrennikov, Stravinsky, Shostakovich) were performed in Ruse.

Most of these were presented to the Bulgarian public for the first time.

The culmination of these collaborations include the 1965 premiere of

a special edition of the opera “Katerina Izmailova” by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Shostakovich himself took an active part in the preparation of the show and

worked closely with the conductor Romeo Raychev and stage director Evgeni

Nemirov. As a result, and out of gratitude for Shostakovich's collaboration with

the Ruse Opera and Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra, the composer became an

honorary citizen of the city of Ruse.

The Ruse Opera works actively for the popularization of the Bulgarian

opera. Opera titles such as “Tsar Kaloyan” by P. Vladigerov, “Yana's nine

brothers” from L. Pipkov, “Ioannis Rex” and “Maria Dessislava” by P. Hadjiev,

“Deer Kingdom” by K. Iliev, “The Colorfull bird” by S. Pironkov or ballets such

as “Goat`s horn” by Kr. Kyurkchiyski and “Nestinarka” by M. Goleminov are

just some of the Bulgarian titles in the repertoire of the troupe from over the

years.

15

16

During the 1950s and 1960s, a remarkable trio, named “The Star

Trio” earned great national and international acclaim, according public

recognition for the State opera Ruse. Penka Marinova, Nikolay Zdravkov and

Kiril Krastev, who represent three of the most prominent soloists in Bulgarian

history, were honored in 2011 by the Opera House with a memorial in the Ruse

center - Further remarkable Bulgarian artists, who shaped the idea of a high

artistic level of the theater and built its international authority were the tenor

Ivan Dimov, the mezzo-soprano Snezhina Yakimova, sopranos Mimi Nikolova

and Ana Angelova, baritone Anastas Anastasov, bass Stefan Dimitrov,

Maria Ventseslavova, Penka Dilova, Stefka Evstatieva, Ivan Konsulov, Ivan

Kyurkchiev, Emilia Boteva, Galya Gorcheva, Mariana Tsvetkova, basses Orlin

Anastasov and Martin Tsonev.

In recent years, the Ruse Opera has taken part in a number of

productions and worked continuously with important figures, cementing its

place in Bulgarian musical culture. Among them are the conductors Boris

Hinchev, Mihail Angelov, Dimitar Manolov, Ivan Filev, Veselin Baychev, Milen

Nachev, Georgi Dimitrov, Metodi Matakiev, Nayden Todorov; the directors

Dragan Kardzhiev, Petar Raichev, Mikhail Hadjimishev, Evgeni Nemirov, Dimitar

most renowned names of the Bulgarian and world opera, make the State

Opera Ruse one of the leading and avant-garde opera theaters in Bulgaria.

Nose“ by Shostakovich. Thanks to the votes of listeners to “Allegro Vivace”

at the Bulgarian National Radio in 2015, the opera was awarded with the

“Ensemble of the Year” prize and “Ruse” Prize.

THE BALLET AT THE RUSE OPERA was founded in 1949. The first ballet

performance was Joseph Bayer's "The Fairy Doll" on March 7th, 1952, produced

by the great Bulgarian ballet master Asen Manolov. The pedagogue of the

troupe is Patsi Bogatinova.

The troupe`s creative path is long and rich. Its joint work with many famous

Bulgarian and foreign choreographers makes it one of the most renowned

ballet companies in the country. The Ruse ballet dancers have worked with

almost all famous Bulgarian ballet masters, including Asen Manolov, Asen

Gavrilov, Petar Lukanov, Margarita Arnaudova, Hikmet Mehmedov and

foreign choreographers - Giancarlo Vantaggio, Vytautas Grivickas, Victor

THE CHOIR OF THE STATE OPERA-ROUSSE dates back to 1949. In the

years before, the choral parts in the first opera productions were performed

by various choirs from the city of Rousse, known for its great tradition of

choral art. It is significant that in the middle of the 20th century there were 28

functioning choirs in Rousse. Even today, one of the most famous Bulgarian

choirs remains the Rousse mixed choirs “Danube Sounds” and “Professor

Vasil Arnaudov”.

During its long existence, the Choir of Rousse Opera has gained a

great amount of professional experience, creating and maintaining a very

diverse repertoire spanning many different genres.

The ensemble is proud to perform more than 40 titles by foreign and

Bulgarian composers, among which we distinguish the names of Mozart,

Beethoven, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni, Gounod, Saint-

Saens, Wagner, Bizet, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky , Smetana, Gershwin,

Shostakovich, Parashkev Hadjiev, Alexander Raychev, Simeon Pironkov,

Stabat Mater, Requiems by Mozart, Verdi and Rutter, Carl Orff's “Carmina”

Burana, Prokofiev's cantata “Alexander Nevsky”, “Mass for Peace” by Karl

Jenkins.

The choir owes its high professional level to the long-term work of

Opera Choir have earned applause and standing ovations from all across

Europe, including - Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands,

Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Romania and Russia.

One review from a member of the foreign press reads: “The choir in

“Nabucco” surpassed the soloists - the choir was at a particularly high level

and without exaggeration we can say that he was the star of the evening.” -

Middelburg, the Netherlands.

In 2006, the Ruse Opera Choir was awarded the Crystal Lyre Prize for

their performance of Handel's “Messiah” at the opening of the International

THE RUSE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA was founded in 1919 as a successor

to the traditions of the symphonic work conducted in Ruse after the

Liberation. The first concert of the Ruse Urban Philharmonic Orchestra took

place on March 2nd, 1919. In the first 30 years of its existence, the orchestra

underwent many metamorphoses, adapting to its funding opportunities and

involvement in various organizations such as the Lyra Society and Opera

Society. In 1947, the orchestra was nationalized and on January 4th, 1948,

performed its first concert as State Symphony Orchestra - Ruse, conducted

by Konstantin Iliev.

On its creative journey, Ruse Philharmonic has accumulated a rich

the orchestra is the initiator and host of the International Festival "March

performed its new tasks as an opera and symphony orchestra with its inherent

high artistic level. It now maintains a rich opera repertoire, which includes over

50 operas, 30 of which are “active”. This means that, if necessary, they could

be revived at any time and presented as soon as possible. The orchestra

of the State Opera-Ruse is regularly presented to the audience as well as a

symphony orchestra - Ruse Philharmonic. It constantly maintains and develops

its symphonic and cantata-oratorio repertoire.

RUSE CHILDREN'S OPERA was established in 2015, by the former

director of the State Opera-Ruse, Nayden Todorov, and the conductor,

Gancho Ganchev. This is the second organization of its kind in Bulgaria,

after the Children and Youth Opera in Varna, whose creative model ours is

inspired by.

The first performance of the Ruse Children's Opera was the Christmas

musical "Scrooge" (16.12.2015), conducted and directed by Gancho

Ganchev. Participants were selected through a casting process and

were initially children from NSA (national School of Arts) "Professor Veselin

Stoyanov" and Ruse`s vocal academies.

A special team was created to work with the children: vocal

pedagogue - Svilen Dimitrov, theater educators - Rositsa Minovska-

Devedjieva and Ilia Devedjiev, dance pedagogues - Malina Arnaudova

and Radka Nedelcheva, accompanist - Bozhena Petrova.

In 2016, the Ruse Children's Opera staged another musical with

conductor and director Gancho Ganchev - "West Side Story" (June 28,

2016), adapted for the stage by Miglena Shisheva. With this production, less

than a year old, Ruse Children's Opera took a decisive step, earning a welldeserved

place in the poster of the State Opera-Ruse.

Ruse Children`s opera’s first independent performance - the

operetta "Annie in the kingdom of flowers" (30.10.2016) was staged thanks

to a successful application to "Ruse - city of the free spirit" foundation’s

call for proposals. Music - Ivan Krastev, libretto (after Maurice Karem)

- Ilia Devedjiev, conductor - Svilen Dimitrov, director - Rositsa Minovska-

Devedjieva, choreography - Malina Arnaudova and Radka Nedelcheva,

costumes - Elitsa Georgieva. The students were chosen from the ballet classes

of NSA “Prof. Veselin Stoyanov” with teacher Denitsa Ancheva. With two

consecutive castings, the Ruse Children's Opera recruited new participants

and the ensemble grew to 45 children aged 7 to 17.

At the same time, a system was created for regular, organized classes

in vocal technique, acting and dance. The Ruse Children's Opera began to

function as a school for young artists.

In the following year, the mentoring team accepted a big challenge -

"Beauty and the Beast" (10.05.2017) by Alan Menken, with a new adaptation,

new translation and new arrangement. Conductor - Svilen Dimitrov, staging

- Ilia Devedjiev, translation and adaptation - Rositsa Minovska-Devedjieva,

choreography - Zornitsa Petrova, artist - Ognian Balkandjiev, costumes -

Lilyana Vasileva.

After successful premieres, the titles of the Children's Opera have

been permanently added to the repertoire of the State Opera-Ruse. Dance

teachers Radka Nedelcheva and Malina Arnaudova created a Dance

Studio for younger children, who participate in the performances of the

Children's Opera.

The performances have been presented in Sofia and the nearby

cities of Razgrad, Tutrakan and Silistra.

In 2018, the Ruse Children's Opera added to its line-up with the

concert-performance "A New World" (May 15, 2018) and the Christmas

concert-performance "Save Christmas!" with songs from famous musicals.

(December 8, 2018)

Apart from their own productions, the young actors often appear

in the performances of the Ruse Opera - "Falstaff", "Carmen", "Carmina

Burana", "Der Rosenkavalier", "Aida", "Turandot", "Nabucco", "La Boheme".

The ballet of the Ruse Opera also readily includes them in its titles "Snow

White", "Don Quixote", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Unprecedented Kingdom".

Ruse Children's Opera is unique in the way that it moved directly

onto the professional stage of the State Opera-Ruse from the moment it

was formed, always performing with the instrumental backing of the opera’s

word-class orchestra.

Thanks to the wide range of competence-building activities organized

by their teachers, the young performers quickly established themselves as a

strong presence in the cultural scene of Ruse. They have become an integral

part of many performances and concerts, acting as animators, and starting

from an early age their development into complex, multifaceted artists.

It is clear to us from the pedagogical team of the Ruse Children's

Opera, that not all of our prized pupils will become professional artists, but

this does not mean that anything they have learned will go to waste. All

those who have worked together with the children are convinced that their

diligent, disciplined work in the opera will serve them well in their lives outside

of it. They will also act as a message, offering an open invitation for new

talent to join the rich and thrilling world of Bulgaria opera, operetta, and

musicals.

6. WALK INTO THE OPERA AND MEET WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

7. THE VOICE INSTRUMENT - with the virtual participation of the Ruse

Philharmonic

8. FATHER HAYDN AND HIS SONS, MOZART AND BEETHOVEN - with the virtual

participation of the Ruse Philharmonic

The themes are developed by selecting the most important and

interesting facts from musical history and the lives of composers, chosen in

order to keep a young audience engaged.

The script is composed of the narrator's text, which is accompanied

and interrupted by a sequence of relevant musical and dance illustrations.

The story is illustrated with printed and multimedia images of the composers,

facsimiles of their manuscripts, images related to the topic, and interesting

props. In the last two lectures, through a projection in front of the audience,

the orchestra of the Ruse Opera - Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra is present.

The musical illustrations, which alternate with the text of the presenter,

are instrumental fragments performed on piano or accompanied by the

orchestra from the screen, as well as arias and duets, which are performed

live by solo singers.

The soloists, as well as the presenter, who is also a singer-performer,

dress up in costumes in order to embody the characters whose arias or duets

they perform.

A hairdresser and make-up artist help their artistic transformation -

they are given wigs and make-up during the story. This is done in front of the

audience.

The transformation in front of the audience is extremely impressive, it

also happens with the narrator himself, who illustrates it with a musical

performance.

The duration of each lecture is no more than 45-50 minutes.

CONCERTS

The professionalism of the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra

means that every concert inevitably becomes a musical event. For

this reason, it is difficult to pick out certain moments in the orchestra’s

long and illustrious history. Therefore, with the clarification that it is

impossible to list them all, we provide a sample of the many Ruse

Philharmonic concerts that will long remain in the memories of their

audiences.

The list is based on three sources - the jubilee book "40 years of the National Opera - Rousse"

(Compiler - Joanna Bakalova - Gradeva with the assistance of Margarita Marinova,

Brilianta Kevorkyan and Videlina Ivanova - Peneva),

the diaries in the Archive of the Ruse Opera

and the chronological notes of the assistant director Elena Ilieva.

The list of the premiere performances covers the period from the first staging of "La Traviata" on the

stage in the Ruse People's Opera to the last jubilee staging of

"La Traviata" on the stage of the State Opera-Ruse.

Certainly, albeit minimal, clarifications and additions are needed.

The logo of State opera-Ruse was made in the 80s

of the XX century by Prof. Stefan Kanchev (1915-

2001) - graphic artist-applicator, who worked in all

areas of applied graphics. He is the author of many

trademarks in the industry and in the commerce,

postage stamps and many others. His work, based

on motifs from folk tradition, is characterized by rich

imagination, calm and clear composition, a successful connection between

font and image. Stefan Kanchev is the author, in addition to the logo of Тhe State

opera-Ruse, also the logos of The Sofia Opera, The Sofia Philharmonic, The Musical

Theater, The Sofia Puppet Theatre and other cultral institutes.

The Ruse Opera Theater is a desired and sought-after participant in

all major Bulgarian music festivals - Pravets, Stara Zagora, Bansko,

Varna, Sofia, and Ruse. Having repeatedly participated in the

International Opera Festival in Solothurn, Switzerland, it remains

one of the stalwarts of the forum. The audiences of the festivals

"Coreades“, France and "Hunedoara Lyrics“, Romania have, for

several consecutive seasons, looked forward to the traditional

performance of Ruse musicians.

Every season the opera house performs dozens of concerts and

performances in various Bulgarian cities, with a proven record of

being the most active distributor of opera, ballet and symphony art

in Bulgaria.

The performances of the Ruse Opera in Hall 1 of the National

Palace of Culture - "La Traviata“, "Sleeping Beauty“, "Tosca“, "The

Tales of Hoffman“, "Katerina Izmailova“, "Rigoletto“, "Il trovatore“,

"Carmen“, "Nabucco“ and "Aida“ serve as proof of its traditional

professionalism and are always a cause for pride and celebration

for the Sofia audience.

The opera and symphony ensembles have recorded for numerous

companies from Denmark, Great Britain, USA, China and Germany.

BNT (Bulgarian national television), as well as other Bulgarian

television channels, regularly record and broadcast their symphony

concerts, opera and ballet performances.

Together with the Viennese impresario house "Blue Danube

Musikimpresario“ the Ruse Opera has organized the annual

conducting courses and competitions "Blue Danube“, and together

with the Allegra Foundation and Allegra Music Academy, overseen

the training and recitals of talented young performers under the

guidance of world famous musicians.

During this period, the opera‘s ensembles have toured abroad in

Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, France, the

Netherlands, Belgium, Dubai, Bahrain, China and South Korea.

The Ruse Opera Theater can claim not only many first performances

in Bulgaria of works from the world opera and symphony treasury, but

also world premieres of works by Bulgarian and foreign composers,

written especially for the Ruse Opera.
