Oko Boye returns to LEKMA hospital

•To consult after election defeat

DEFEATED

MEMBER of

Parliament for

the Ledzokuku

Constituency in

the Greater

Accra Region, Dr Bernard Okoe

Boye, has returned to the

LEKMA Hospital to help with

consultations a week after he narrowly

lost his Parliamentary seat.

Dr Okoe Boye, who garnered

54,072 votes as compared to the

55,938 garnered by the National

Democratic Congress’s (NDC)

Benjamin Aryiku Narteh, expressed

gratitude to his constituents

for the opportunity to

serve them over the past four

years.

In a Facebook post, Dr Oko

Boye who is also the Deputy

Health Minister, said his service to

the nation did not end with his

electoral defeat.

“First post-election Monday

consultations at the Lekma Hospital.

Some staff were happy to see

me doing fine, some surprised at

my activity having assumed that

•Dr Benard Oko Boye

not winning the Parliamentary

election meant away with community

service.

“It is important to understand

that the joy a true leader experiences

does not lie in the position

he holds but in the service his

people receive. I thank God that

you do not have to necessarily

hold a position to assist others experience

a better world. Because

He lives, we can face tomorrow.”

Man, 54, pours acid on

18-yr-old girlfriend, mother

BY KOJO ANSAH

AN EIGHTEEN year-oldgirl

and her mother have

been hospitalized after an

acid attack on them allegedly

by a 54-year-old man.

The suspect, Nana Yaw

Mante, a businessman allegedly

poured the acid on

his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend

and mother while in a room

at Awukugua in the Okere

District of the Eastern Region.

Both have been referred

to the Korle Bu Teaching

Hospital in Accra.

The suspect, who is the

father of the Okere District

Chief Executive, was convicted

few months ago by the

Koforidua Magistrate Court

“A” to a fine of GHc1,200

and ordered to pay a compensation

of GH1,000 to the

victim for filming and circulating

sexually explicit videos

and pictures of the victim.

Background

The 54-year-old businessman

was put before a Koforidua

Magistrate Court for

filming and circulating nude

videos of his 18-year-old exgirlfriend.

He was charged for obscenity

contrary to section

281(i) B of the Criminal Offence

Act,29/60.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant

George Defia, told the court

presided over by His Worship

Nana Osei Assibey on

Tuesday, May 19 that the

convict and the victim, a

Senior High School dropout,

are both natives of

Awukugua in the Okere District

of the Eastern Region.

According to the prosecuting

officer, two years ago,

Nana Yaw Mante met the

victim who had dropped out

of school due to financial

challenges, and under the

pretext of assisting her to go

back to school, took undue

advantage and entered into a

sexual relationship with her.

The family of the victim

became suspicious and confronted

the accused person

but he denied having sexual

relations with the victim. The

relationship hit the rocks due

to disapproval and pestering

by the family. However, in

2019, the convict convinced

the victim and they reunited.

Nana Yaw Mante, for fear

of losing the victim again,

told her that he had taken

her to a shrine and the gods

were demanding to see her

Election 2020:

Our evidence is

solid – NDC

BY KOJO ANSAH

THE LEGAL

team of the

National

Democratic

Congress

(NDC) has

said it has gathered enough evidence

to challenge the results

of the 2020 polls as declared by

the Chairperson of the Electoral

Commission (EC), Mrs

Jean Mensa.

According to a member of

the legal team, Mr Abraham

Amaliba, evidence of the irregularities

as gathered by the

lawyers will be submitted to

the NDC candidate, John Mahama,

who will decide the next

line of action for the party.

“I think the team has concluded

its work as of yesterday

and they will present their findings

to the flag bearer and we

lawyers are interested in the

work they’ve done.

The team was looking at

padding and swapping of votes

and also under-voting and overvoting

in the Presidential race.

For the Parliamentary, we are

looking at nine seats but for

Presidential, it’s nationwide,” he

told Morning Starr host Francis

Abban Monday.

He added: “You see huge votes

given to Akufo-Addo and reduction

of votes for John Mahama

and these are some of the things

we’ve come across. We’ll put it in

the public domain soon.

“We don’t want to go to court

on flimsy grounds. We want to go

to court with evidence that can

stand the test of time so that even

when we lose, in the eyes of

Ghanaians, we won. What is convincing

already is the percentage

and mathematics that were gotten

wrong by the EC Chair and subsequently,

she came out with figures

that were also wrong.”

Meanwhile, legal practitioner,

Yaw Oppong, has expressed satisfaction

over the decision of the

NDC to challenge the results of

the polls in court.

“I think it’s quite comforting

that the parties who feel aggrieved

with the decision of the EC regarding

the results of the Parliamentary

and Presidential

•Mr Abraham Amaliba

elections have decided to go to

court. If you are challenging the

results, I think all parties should

have their pink sheets and be clear

in their minds that thay can establish

a prima facie case and also

have the gazetted results,” he said.

NDC flag-bearer John Mahama

has rejected the results of

the polls which gave the ruling

party some 51% of the valid vote

cast.

“We don’t want to go to

court on flimsy

grounds. We want to

go to court with evidence

that can stand

the test of time so that

even when we lose, in

the eyes of Ghanaians,

we won. What is convincing

nakedness.

In November 2019, he

lured the victim to Dawu

near Adukrom-Akuapem

where he recorded series of

sexually explicit videos of

themselves.

He later circulated the

videos of the victim to her

Aunty and two other men he

alleged were also dating the

victim. The videos went viral

on social media in February

2020.

The victim reported the

incident to the Domestic Violence

and Victims Support

Unit (DOVVSU) at the Regional

Police Headquarters in

Koforidua.

He was arrested on February

7, 2020 and in his caution

statement admitted recording

the sexually explicit videos of

the victim and sharing same.

The receivers of the

videos confirmed to Police

during interrogation that the

accused sent it to them but

denied circulating on social

media.

Ghana Statistical Service

begins training of Master Trainers

THE GHANA Statistical

Service (GSS)

has begun the last

phase of training

for Master Trainers

for the 2021 Population

and Housing Census (PHC)

at Winneba in the Central Region.

The in-person training workshop

on Computer Assisted Personal

Interviewing (CAPI) would

run for eight days, from December

9 to December 16, 2020.

It follows a nine-day virtual

training programme held between

November 23 and December 3,

2020.

A statement from the GSS said

the CAPI training was necessary

because the upcoming 2021 PHC,

which is scheduled to take place in

April and May 2021, was a digital

census that involved the use of

tablets (Computer Assisted Personal

Interviewing, CAPI) for

electronic data capture and syncing.

As such, trainers for the 2021

PHC are required to have mastery

of the use of tablets in addition to

the questionnaire content and

enumeration procedures.

In all, 127 prospective Master

Trainers are participating in the

workshop which will involve assessments

to determine the participants

who will be selected as

Master Trainers for the 2021

PHC.

The Master Trainers are at the

apex of a four-tier training strategy

for the 2021 PHC which aims

to train approximately 75,000

Field Officers to collect data.

Master Trainers will train National

Trainers who will in turn

train Regional Trainers who will

directly train Field Officers.

At the opening ceremony for

the training, Mr. Owusu Kagya,

the Head of Census Methodology

entreated participants to take the

training seriously because census

work was

demanding

and

required

commitment.

He

said the

main objective

of

the census

was

to collect

credible,

usable

data for

decisionmaking

and effective training was

key to making that possible.

The Head of the National

Census Secretariat, Mr. George

Emmanuel Ossei, also emphasized

the importance of the exercise

and the need for participants

to observe all the health and

safety protocols.

The conduct of the census is

in accordance with the objectives

of the GSS to provide quality, relevant,

accurate and timely statistical

information for national development

as stipulated in Clause 3

of the Statistical Service Act, 2019

(Act 1003) and oversight of capacity

building in the statistical

ecosystem.

A statement from

the GSS said the

CAPI training was

necessary because

the upcoming 2021

PHC, which is scheduled

to take place in

April and May 2021,

was a digital census

that involved the use

of tablets (Computer

Participate in formal political

processes

• GAR 2nd Vice Chair tells SHS Students

OVER 450

Senior High

School (SHS)

students who

were firsttime

voters

in the just-ended December 7,

2020 elections, have been

schooled on matters regarding

the country’s elections.

The one-day conference initiated

and sponsored by the GAR

2nd Vice Chair was on the

theme: “The importance of

youth participation in formal

political processes.”

Using the Dzatabu Youth

Lions Club as Coordinators,

these target groups registered

for the programme and confirmed

their participation via

WhatsApp.

Assuring the students of

their safety and security, coaster

buses were hired to commute

them from and to their picking

points within, Tema West, Tema

East, Tema Central and

Ashaiman Constituencies.

Importance of youth participation

in formal political

processes

Dr. Benjamin Ashitey, who

contested the Tema East Parliamentary

primaries but lost, took

the students through the conference

theme.

After defining politics and

political participation, he explained

items related to political

participation such as Campaigning,

Voter Education,

Registering To Vote, Liaising

with Politicians, Holding Politicians

Accountable Joining a Political

Party and Contesting

/Standing For Elections.

He added that youth participation

in politics was important

because it ensures responsive, all

inclusive participatory and representative

decision-making at

all levels and equal distribution

of national resources.

Safety and security

DSP Eric Amponsah took

the students through general security

tips and how they should

conduct them during elections.

He also touched on the activities

of armed robbers and

fraudsters while advising the

students to take their personal

security seriously.

Rudiments of voting

The GAR 2nd Vice, Joana

Frances Adda took them

through the processes of voting

by demonstrating how to correctly

thumb print on their

choice of candidates.

The GAR 2nd Chair told the

students that they were one of

the many reasons why Ghanaians

voted for Nana Akufo-

Addo in 2016.

“Parents know what they go

thorough paying fees and putting

food on the table. Mothers

sell their jewelry and clothes; fathers

go for loans and sell their

lands. They should therefore appreciate

the relief this policy

has brought to parents.”

Third phase of airports disinfection takes off in Kumasi

THE THIRD phase of airports

disinfection kicked-off on Friday ,

December 11 at the Kumasi Airport

in the Ashanti Regional capital.

The exercise was a collaboration

between the government and

waste management experts,

Zoomlion Ghana Limited. It was

carried out in the evening, from

9:00 p.m to 10:00 p.m., when the

last domestic flight had disembarked

at the airport.

The exercise formed part of

the government’s commitment to

curb the spread of the COVID-

19 pandemic in the country. Facilities

disinfected included the

departure hall, arrival hall and

VIP lounge. The rest were the tarmac,

restrooms, Airport Police

Post and all open spaces at the

airport.

The Ashanti Regional Vector

Control Unit Officer, ZGL, Mr

Ernest Nutor, speaking to the

media, said the exercise was crucial

in the nation’s continuous battle

against the virus.

“More especially, as domestic

flights have resumed, it was important

that we undertake regular

disinfection of the various airports

in the country to keep them

safe for passengers,” he noted.

He said in addition to the regular

disinfection by his outfit, the

airport authorities also carried out

dusting on daily basis to make the

place safe for users.

He pointed out that the exercise

will be replicated at the Kotoka

International Airport (KIA),

Tamale Airport

and

Takoradi Airport

in the

coming days.

While

pointing out

that the national

disinfection

exercises

against the

virus had

helped, Mr

Nutor reminded

Ghanaians on the need to complement

the government’s efforts

by continuously abiding by the

CCOVID-19 protocols.

“Anytime we decide to move

out of our homes, we should remember

to wear our nose masks

and also carry our alcohol-based

hand sanitizers for sanitising our

hands against the COVID,” he advised.

According to him, the virus

was still in the country, hence cautioned

Ghanaians against losing

their guard.

GJA needs all hands on deck

THE GHANA Journalists Association

(GJA), led by its president Mr Roland

Affail Monney, has assured media practitioners

in the country of its commitment

to stand by them in the course of

their duties.

This follows injuries sustained by two

journalists in the line of duty at a collation

centre after the December 7 general

election

In this country, journalists have always

incurred the wrath of the very

people they fight for. One such incident

happened during the December 7, 2020

elections where Mr Pius Asiedu and a

reporter with the Ghana Broadcasting

Corporation (GBC) as well as a policeman

on duty, almost lost their lives.

According to the president of the

GJA, journalists gave of their best during

the elections and deserved commendation,

instead of condemnation.

He said this year’s elections were

characterised by tension, challenges and

enormous risks occasioned by gunshot

incidents which, unfortunately, left two

journalists injured.

Following from that, the SIC Insurance

Company Limited last Friday paid

the insurance benefit for one of the injured

journalists, Mr Pius Asiedu, who

suffered gunshot wounds while observing

the collation of results at the

Ablekuma Central collation centre in

Accra on December 7.

It was part of a GH¢20 million insurance

package the company provided

for the GJA for its members who covered

the elections.

As part of the package, the company

will take full charge of Asiedu’s medical

bill and also provide him with a lump

sum payment after his recovery.

Mr Asiedu, who reports for a news

portal, Newswatchgh.com, suffered a

fracture in his left leg and other gunshot

wounds and is currently receiving treatment

at the Greater Accra Regional

Hospital.

From what has transpired so far,

considering what has happened over the

years, where the GJA had not been able

to protect its members, recent engagement

shows that things are changing for

the better.

The DAILY HERITAGE commends

the GIJ for the insurance package

for journalists. The media is the

Fourth Estate of the realm and it is necessary

to protect journalists.

The paper sees the GJA’s stance as

progressive and urges the association to

do more for its members.

The paper wishes to advise that

though the GJA is an association, it

needs all hands on deck to enable it

achieve all the laudable goals it has set

itself.

The paper calls on all media practitioners

to be active in the association’s

activities to enable it become as vibrant

and efficient as we all want it to be.

GJA throws support behind journalists

THE GHANA

assured media

The President of the GJA, Mr

Imperfection

While admitting that there had

been a few instances of imperfection

in the coverage of the elections,

Mr Monney said that should

not obstruct the fact that the

media generally performed well in

their reportage.

He, therefore, described as unfortunate

the attacks on some sections

of the media in the

aftermath of the elections.

•Mr Affail Monney

The GJA President said there

was no justification for the verbal

attacks, blazing threats and cyberbullying

being perpetrated against

certain journalists and media

houses for performing their duty.

“The GJA strongly believes

that those life-threatening experiences,

as well as the inestimable

sacrifices, sleepless nights, reportorial

skills, editorial competence,

analytical power, boundless energy,

patriotic zeal and projectional

acumen journalists and

media houses displayed deserve

fulsome commendation and not

outright condemnation.

“The anti-media brew which is

bubbling in certain political circles

is inimical to press freedom and

dangerous to our democracy. This

must stop forthwith,” he added.

While giving an assurance that

the GJA would fully support all its

members in the discharge of their

duties, he also urged them to inject

the highest degree of circumspection

in their work in order not

to inflame passions.

Mr Monney encouraged journalists

to go about their professional

work without fear of

intimidation.

‘Skirt and Blouse’ claims

against Ama Sey false – Group

•Ama Sey

AGROUP calling itself

‘Friends of

Ama Sey’ has debunked

claims that

the outgoing

Member Of Parliament

(MP) for Akwatia Constituency

engaged in ‘skirt and

blouse’ campaign against the New

Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary

candidate Ernest Yaw Kumi,

leading to his defeat in the justended

2020 General Election.

According to the communications

officer of ‘Friends of Ama

Sey,’ Eugene Sage, Madam Adu

Gyamfi independently and passionately

campaigned for both the

Presidential Candidate, Nana

Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and

the Parliamentary Candidate.

Speaking on Nkawkaw-based

Agoo FM yesterday, Mr Sage alleged

that the Constituency executives

sidelined Ama Sey and her

team during the campaign season.

The Akwatia Constituency Executives

of the NPP have announced

their intention to sack

the outgoing MP for the area

from the party effective January 7,

2021.

The NPP has also revealed it

will suspend en masse party executives

who aided Ama Sey to campaign

skirt and blouse votes

against the party’s candidate,

Ernest Yaw Kumi, leading to his

defeat in the just-ended Parliamentary

election.

The NPP lost the Parliamentary

seat to the NDC after Ernest

Yaw Kumi polled 18,742 votes as

against the NDC’s Henry Yiadom

Boakye who garnered 19,899

votes.

The NPP snatched the seat

from Baba Jamal of the NDC in

2016. But Ama Sey who won the

seat to become MP, lost her bid

for re-election during the Parliamentary

primaries of the party.

She claimed the primaries were

rigged to favour Ernest Yaw

Kumi who won with a slim margin.

The Constituency Chairman,

Alhaji Baba Yakubu, addressing

the media in Akwatia last Friday

said “looking at the just ended

December 7 election, Nana Akufo

Addo had 21, 758. John Dramani

Mahama had 16, 18. If you subtract

the difference, which is skirt

and blouse, is 5,577.

Responding to the suspension

claims, Eugene Sage told hostess

Obaahemaa Yaa Mirekua that

their leader, Ama Sey, has the

NPP at heart. He pointed out that

when she was called upon to go

independent, she rather chose to

obey the President and the Party

National Executives.

‘’Ama Sey did not go independent

when the people of Akwatia

had wanted it; she has the

NPP at heart so she rescinded her

decision to go independent when

the NPP National Executives and

other prominent people advised

her. She never engaged in any skirt

and blouse campaign so all these

allegations are false,’’ Eugene Sage

stated.

Otto Addo named assistant

coach at Borussia Dortmund

FORMER GHANA International,

Otto Addo,

has been named as the

assistant coach of

Borussia Dortmund in

Germany after the club

decided to part ways with their

head coach Lucien Favre following

a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of

newly-promoted Stuttgart.

The embarrassing defeat leaves

Dortmund fifth in the Bundesliga,

five points off the pace of leaders

Bayern Munich, whose 24 points

are matched by RB Leipzig.

By contrast, Dortmund has

earned only four points in their last

five matches, though they did make

impressive progress in the Champions

League, finishing first in

Group F ahead of Lazio.

Nonetheless, Dortmund

have ran out of patience after

losing 11 games of the new

campaign, deciding to sack

Favre and appoint assistant

Edin Terzic as interim boss

until the end of the current

season.

Confirming the news, the

official Twitter handle of the

German club said: “Assistant

coach Edin Terzic has been

appointed as interim manager

until the end of the current

season. Terzic’s coaching team

will be joined by Sebastian

Geppert and Otto Addo.”

The move is further testament

of how highly respected

Otto Addo is at the club.

Addo, who is a former

player of the Yellow and

Blacks, was announced as the

side's 'talent coach' last year.

The role which was created

for the Ghanaian is to serve as

a link between the youth and

senior teams.

He is responsible for helping

to promote Borussia Dortmund’s

most talented

youngsters to the senior squad

and is in charge of their supervision

and additional training.

Dortmund’s elite talent

coach would now have to help as

Edin Terzic attempts to halt the

club’s poor run in the league this

season.

The former Black Star player

was at the club between 1999 and

2005, making 98 Bundesliga appearances

(16 goals) and winning

the 2002 Bundesliga title during his

time with Dortmund.

Born in Germany, Addo represented

Ghana at the World Cup in

2006, making two appearances at

the event as the Black Stars

reached the round of 16.

GHANAIAN DEFENDER,

Jonathan Mensah, shed tears

as he led Columbus Crew to

win the 2020 Major League

Soccer Cup yesterday.

Mensah produced a sold

shift in the defence to help

Porter's men keep a clean

sheet in their 3-0 win over

Seattle Sounders.

The 30-year-old was captured

in the video crying as he

became the first skipper to

•Kosta Papic

lead Crew to win their second

MLS Cup having clinched

their first title in 2008.

Harrison Afful got the

hosts off to a flying start at

Mapfre Stadium by assisting

Lucas Zelarayan for the opening

goal in the 25th minute.

Derrick Etienne doubled

the lead for the Crew in the

31st minute as Zelarayan

bagged his brace eight minutes

from full-time.

Mensah has established

himself as a key player in

Porter's defence this campaign

with over 25 league appearances

under his belt.

As a reward for winning

the MLS Cup, Columbus

Crew becomes the fourth

American top-flight club to

qualify for the 2021 Concacaf

Champions League.

Champions League:

Liverpool to

face RB Leipzig

LIVERPOOL WILL face last season's

semi-finalists, RB Leipzig, in the

last 16 of the Champions League,

while Chelsea come up against

Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City will face Borussia

Monchengladbach, who are in the last

16 for the first time since 1978.

Holders Bayern Munich face Italian

side Lazio, who are in the knockout

stage for the first time in 20 years.

Barcelona face Paris St-Germain

in arguably the tie of the round, a repeat

of their 2017 classic.

On that occasion, the French side

won 4-0 in the first leg but Barcelona

completed a stunning 6-1 home win

to advance.

PSG forward, Neymar, injured

against Lyon on Sunday, scored twice

for Barcelona in the last two minutes

of that dramatic comeback - for

Barcelona. The Brazilian recently said

he wants Barca great Lionel Messi to

join him in Paris next season.

All three English Premier League

teams will be away for the first leg before

having home advantage for the

return matches.

The first legs will be spread across

two midweeks, taking place on 16, 17,

23 and 24 February, with the second

legs on 9, 10, 16 and 17 March.

Bayern - who beat PSG in last season's

final - are favourites with the

bookmakers to retain their title.
