Milford Pioneer Theatre

hosts free holiday movie matinees.

Armed with only one word and fighting for the

survival of the world, the Protagonist journeys

through a world of espionage on a mission that

will unfold in something beyond real time.

Recruited by the FBI, ex-con and former special

operations soldier Pete Koslow uses his covert

skills to try and take down the General — the

most powerful crime boss in New York.

Side Trip:

Our annual Christmas with Michael W.

Smith and friends looked a little different

this year.

My husband and I have a connection

with MWS holiday music that goes back

to before we were

married. The Christmastime

album came

out in early December

and Jeff and I listened

to it on repeat as we

drove to Minneapolis

and back that year.

The snow was falling

picture-perfect, and

we felt like we were

living inside a snow

globe.

Over the years we’ve

also attended MWS

holiday concerts in Sioux Falls, St. Paul,

Omaha and Des Moines. Amy Grant is a

regular, as is the local symphony, and there

have been a host of other talented musicians.

Are the concerts predictable? Probably.

Do we love them? Absolutely.

I like my holidays a bit on the predictable

side.

This year we set the DVR to record the

hourlong special, and it felt a bit like being

a kid and being excited to watch the Christmas

specials airing that year. Some were

always the same — like “Frosty,” “Rudolph”

or even “A Charlie Brown Christmas” — but

others were new each year.

The MWS special that aired this year

didn’t include Amy Grant, or a symphony,

but it featured the classic harmonies of

Point of Grace, the amazing voices of

Jordan Smith and Marc Martel, and the

Katinas, a group we have seen on tour with

MWS several times. It wasn’t as good as

attending a concert in person, but we’ve

already been able to enjoy the show more

than once — and the ticket price can’t be

beat.

But I’m already looking forward to a seat

in the auditorium next year.

New York City Ballet streams “The Nutcracker” this holiday season

I

have visions of sugar plum fairies

dancing in my head.

You can too.

The New York City Ballet has

teamed up with Marquee TV to bring

the holiday classic “The Nutcracker”

to the world of streaming.

George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”

will be available for streaming

through Jan. 3, with the purchase

of a $25 ticket.

The show was “filmed during the

company’s 2019 season at the David

H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center,

the broadcast features NYCB Principal

Dancers Maria Kowroski as the

Sugarplum Fairy, Tyler Angle as Her

Cavalier, Megan Fairchild as Dewdrop,

and more than 50 New York

City Ballet dancers,” according to the

description. “The production also

features the 62-piece New York City

Ballet Orchestra under the direction

of NYCB Music Director Andrew Litton

and more than 60 children from

the School of American Ballet, the

official school of NYCB.”

The performance runs just over an

hour and a half including intermission

and the final curtain.

would take my sister and I to go see

“The Nutcracker” almost every Christmas.

It was always magical.

I haven’t seen the ballet for a number

of years, but I still listen faithfully

to the score by Tchaikovsky at least

once every holiday season.

I have never been lucky enough to

see a performance by the New York

City Ballet, and I couldn’t resist purchasing

a ticket to watch one of my

all-time favorite ballets performed

by arguably the best company in the

world.

Just as when I was little, it was still

magical.

The excitement builds all through

Act One, as the family and their

friends dance and celebrate with a

holiday party and a special magic

show for the children. Clara is gifted

a nutcracker, but it is subsequently

broken by her hyperactive little

brother.

In her dreams, Clara is swept away

into another realm, and that’s when

the real excitement begins. A fight

between toy soldiers and mice leads

to the Nutcracker coming to life to

slay the dreaded Mouse King.

The Nutcracker and Clara are then

thanked by the Sugar Plum Fairy and

her court with a party and variety of

performances.

One of my favorite movements is

“The Waltz of the Snowflakes,” and

the New York City Ballet’s version

took my breath away. The dancers

performed the entire section with

snow swirling around the stage as if

they were really snowflakes dancing

in the middle of a blizzard. It was

marvelous. Thanks to streaming, I

was able to re-watch that section over

and over again.

While it didn’t carry the same level

of excitement as a live performance,

it was still wonderful.

As I laid down my head on my pillow,

visions of snowflakes, flowers

and sugar plum fairies danced in my

head. F

‘TIL MIDNIGHT

Little Swan Lake Winery hosts

New Year’s Eve celebration

Good music, good food,

good times.

That’s the plan for New

Year’s Eve at Little Swan Lake

Winery in rural Estherville.

There will certainly be plenty of

each for everyone to enjoy as they

ring in the new year.

The New Year’s Eve Musical Extravaganza

is set to begin at 8 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 31, with three

musical acts taking their turns on

the stage.

Seats are $40 per person, which

includes the meal of bison prime

rib with accompanying side

dishes.

Turning up the volume for the

night, in no particular order, will

be Storm Rising, Boon & Lambert

as well as Adam and Jacob, who

will all combine their efforts to truly

make it a musical extravaganza.

“We’ve done this with combined

groups a couple times before

and it’s always just a ball. We

started calling it that a few years

ago and it just fit,” said Scott Benjamin,

co-owner

of the winery.

“New Year’s Eve

is a lot of fun

because people

are there to really relax and enjoy

the evening. And there’s always

wine, which is part of it, too.”

Each of the musical acts will

be recognizable to regulars of the

winery and many venues in the

overall Iowa Great Lakes region.

“Boon & Lambert, we really

enjoy working with them. When

they play here it’s always a lot

of fun,” Benjamin said.

Adam and Jacob play a little

more new stuff perhaps than

the others, according to Benjamin,

but still do a lot of classic

rock.

“They’re both talented musicians

and it’s been fun to watch

them grow over the few years

we’ve been having them here,”

Benjamin said.

He particularly enjoys the harmonies

brought forth by Storm

Rising.

“Their harmonies work so

well together. It’s just awesome,

Of course the New Year won’t be rung in without a few protocols

in place due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

That means that at Little Swan Lake Winery they’ll only be seating

Employees will be wearing masks and guests will be required

to do so until seated at their tables.

beautiful stuff,” Benjamin said.

and all that, but all these groups

we just really enjoy having here.”

Weekends through Christmas

“A Christmas Story” will be on the screen at Milford Pioneer

Theatre from Dec. 23-25. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Everyone has a favorite Christmas movie.

And if you are lucky, you just might be

able to see them on the big screen.

During the holiday season each year, the

Milford Pioneer Theatre offers free matinees of

holiday movies on weekends.

The event is sponsored by area businesses in

an effort to give back to the community and

offer up kids and families a fun, free way to

spend time together.

“We have been doing the Merchant Matinees

since we took over in 2016,” said Rob Mayer, a

co-owner of the theatre. “But they’ve been going

on a lot longer than that — maybe 30-40

years.”

It’s a tradition that has changed over time.

“It was originally set up to give parents

some place to take their kids so they could

shop downtown for Christmas, but it has just

evolved into a fun family time now,” Mayer

said. “We think it’s good for the community

and it’s a fun thing to offer around Christmastime.”

Every weekend offers up a different movie.

So far this year they’ve shown “Christmas Vacation,”

“Elf,” and “The Grinch.” The weekend

of Dec. 19-20 they’ll be showing “The Polar

Express.” And on Christmas from Dec. 23-25,

they’ll be showing “A Christmas Story.”

Show times are posted about a week before

each movie starts its run and people can reserve

their spots at that time.

“Reservations are kind of a new thing for us

since we put in recliner seats, which reduced

our theatre from 250 seats to 72. We implemented

reservations last year, and this year it

makes even more sense,” Mayer said. “It helps

us ensure social distancing and we can track

who is in the theatre and we even have their

contact information.”

They are requiring that all attendees wear

face masks while attending a movie and they

have hand sanitizer and, in general, have strict

COVID-19 safety protocols.

Even though the event looks a little different

this year, Mayer is excited that they were able

to carry on the tradition this year for Free Merchant

Matinees.

“For me, growing up in Milford, it is something

I remember doing from when I was little,”

Mayer said. “Having those childhood memories

for youngsters and parents is important.

And it’s a nice way to find some entertainment

for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday.” F
