Although due to improved medical care, drugs andvaccines ,the mortality rate has come down, it has beenreported that outbreaks of infectious disease worldwidehave increased steadily since 1980s and thus the proverb‘Prevention is Better than cure’ HOLDS TRUEPrevention of what? Prevention of reasons which causedthis or such diseases in the past or the reasons which maycause many such diseases in the future? Here comes theimportance of biodiversity and nature conservation.Nature was and shall remain the the answer to most ofthe challenges that are being faced by humanity in spiteof technical advances we have made .A very interesting example is that of Oxygen. It is oneamong many gifts mother earth showers on us. If wequantify the cost of the oxygen one person inhaleseveryday with the rate of the oxygen cylinder, it isenormous. If we hypothetically take the average cost of a2.75 litre portable oxygen cylinder to be Rs. 6,500, thenon a single day a person consumes oxygen worth aboutRs. 13 lakh. Thus there is need to keep the environmentat the heart of all our development strategies becausethere is no Planet B. Remember, Mother Earth isshowering these to us absolutely free of cost!However post Covid-19, it is evident that future trade andinvestment decisions cannot be made solely based onsuch indices, given their narrow focus on economicindicators and infrastructure. Expansion of such metricsby incorporating indicators pertaining to resilience,inclusivity, equity, environmental & social protection,climate change, etc. among others, seems to beimperative now.Business can’t afford to slipback to business as usualand need to learn frommistakes; it’s time to thinkBusiness UnusualSocial component, the second pillar of sustainability. It isof no less importance.COVID-19 has been quite a leveller.Socio-economic status is strongly related to vulnerabilitieswhere poor and underprivileged suffer to adisproportionate extent. The images of migrant labourerswalking hundreds of kilometres to reach their nativeplaces and many losing lives before reaching theirdestinations are still alive in our hearts and minds.In fact COVID19 has exposed the fault in our conventionalway of business, state and society governance. There is agrowing need globally to build back better and ensureresilient and green recovery post Covid-19. Experiencefrom Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown in India hasunderlined that protecting workers, communities andenvironment is not only the right thing to do for Indianbusinesses, but key to their long-term resilience.Sustainability permeates every aspect of a company’soperations – from procurement to disposal – and requiresactive engagement of every employee so companies cantransform to more sustainable business models.Consensus is emerging globally about greater attentionand investments towards preventing and mitigatingnegative impacts of businesses on workers, communitiesand environment. Businesses are coming forth to staybetter informed in future about risks and vulnerabilities intheir value chains and investments.So far Competitiveness indices are normally have beenused as barometer by business leaders, investors andanalysts globally to test business friendliness of countriesThe European Union (EU) is India’s largest trading partneraccounting for Euro 80 billion worth of trade in goods in2019, or 11.1% of total Indian trade. This is the secondlargestdestination for Indian exports (over 14% of thetotal) after the US. In April this year, EuropeanCommission announced to introduce a legislation formandatory social and environmental diligence in thesupply chain of EU companies by 2021. The need todisclose social and environmental impacts of their tradeand investment activities is also made mandatorySo in nutshell, three things emerge- First we must carefor Our Planet, second People are the biggeststakeholders and third Profit is important because,without it business cannot survive.Any development without meeting the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) is incomplete. While COVIDpandemic presents enormous health and economicchallenges, there are opportunities to jumpstarteconomies and rebuild societies through green recoveryplans aligned with the 2030 Agenda. There is a consensusworld-wide that the only way countries will recover fromCOVID-19 is if the international community remainscommitted to the Sustainable Development Goals andshall thus ensures prosperity for all and build resilience .So basically 2030 Agenda should be our roadmaps forbuilding back better. This pandemic has taught us, how toovercome our socio-environmental challenges. Each oneof us – as individuals, companies or governments – needto take ownership of our future.
