COME WINE
WITH ME
From brews to booze...
Tips for Vino Dummies!
Part 3
SPANISH WINES
In our last edition, we focused on the wine growing areas
and wines produced in our own backyard as it were,
ie Almería. Almerían wines are still growing in terms of
reputation and popularity, as are other wines in Spain.
This time we explore another lesser-known wine region/
autonomous community (comunidad autónoma), that
of Galicia, located in the north west of Spain, above the
Portuguese border. It is often referred to as ‘Green Spain’
and likened to Ireland due to its lush, verdant landscape
and rather wet climate. Having lived there for over a year
and a half in my distant past, I can personally attest to this
being the case! One of its typical features is its rugged
Cantabrian coastline and peppered with sprawling
estuaries known as ‘rías’ in Spanish.
DO wine regions in Galicia
In terms of wine production, Galicia comprises 5 DO
regions: Ribeiro, Valdeorras, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra
and Monterrey, and around 20 different native grapes
varieties.
1. As mentioned, Ribeiro has been a DO since 1932, and
is the oldest in Galicia. Its production area is located in
the westernmost part of the province of Ourense, with
red, rosé and white wines, which are young, moderately
acidic, light and with combinations of very fruity and floral
aromas.
It has historically been considered a ‘young wine’ growing
area, rather than one of great vintage wines, even
though the most famous Galician (gallego) wine, Ribeiro,
has actually been a registered DO (Denominación de
Origen/Certificate of Origin) since 1932. One unusual
feature of wine growing in this area is the high number
of independent wine producers known as ‘colleiteiros’
producing wine from their own grapes.
Both the climate and terrain influence its wine production.
The climate is conditioned by the mountains that surround
it, protecting it from storms and bad weather. As for the
land, the height causes thermal differences, which affects
the wine. The higher vineyards will be windier, therefore
causing the wine ripening process to take longer.
Galicia Map Wine Regions
4
Ribeiro wine is very much associated with the tradition of
drinking it from a ‘cunca’ (in gallego), meaning ‘little bowl’.
It is difficult to specify the origin of the use of the cunca
to drink wine. One of the possible reasons for its use is
that the Ribeiro wine contained a large amount of volatile
ethers that produced headaches and migraines and the
form of the cunca favoured the evaporation.
Octopus and Cunca Ribeiro
One peculiarity of Ribeiro is the distinction between
the ‘adega’ (gallego for bodega), winery and
‘colleiteiro’ (cosechero = harvester). The ‘colleiteiro’,
that is, the independent wine producer, was regulated
in 1987 and are those who produce less than 60,000
litres per year and only from home-grown grapes, and
cannot use grapes from other winegrowers. Adegas
or wineries can make wines with grapes from their
own vineyards or buy from other winemakers.
2. Valdeorras is a small area in the east of Ourense
and has been a DO since 1945. It has done much
to improve its wine production with cutting edge
technology and uses its native grape varieties of the
white godello and red mencía. The godello yields wine
with an intensely fruity, floral aroma, whilst the mencía
grape produces very purply reds with elegant aromas
and a soft velvety texture. Valdeorras Castas Nobles
is a newly created category of wine with at least 85%
of the recommended varieties. Valdeorras Crianza is
also notable for its flavour, and covers white and red
wines of Valdeorras that are aged in oak barrels.
A peculiarity of this area is that traditionally wineries
were underground, where wine production was
carried out in the ‘bowels of the earth’, in caves dug
in mud - many of these old wineries are preserved
as such. The age of some of these caves goes back
several centuries, many of them being preserved
in perfect condition. Their chimneys known as
‘refugallos’ are unique, and appear as a curious
element on the landscape. They are used for
ventilation and temperature regulation in the cellar.
The high quality of the Valdeorras wines make it a
benchmark in the sector and have attracted national
and international interest in a region where, as the
regional government comments “wine becomes the
highest expression of the land, whose essence is
captured in a bottle.” A most fitting way to describe
a labour of love which reflects the culture and beauty
of the region.
3. Rías Baixas (meaning low lying estuaries) has its
production area in the south western part of the
province of Pontevedra, and whilst it is probably the
most renowned after Ribeiro, it was only awarded DO
status in 1988. Most of its production is white wine
of the Albariño grape variety, although there are other
varieties from which other quality wines are obtained.
There are over 190 bodegas (wineries), most of which
are located in areas near the sea and at low altitude,
of less than 300 metres. Although their production is
characterized by white wines, they also produce red
and sparkling wines.
The DO region is divided into 5 main areas: Salnés,
Rosal, Condado, Soutomaior y Ribeira do Ulla.
Albariño is said to have been brought to Galicia in
the 12th century by the monks of the Cistercian
Order, who planted vineyards that remain to this day,
although this theory is not entirely accepted. Its wine
is fruity and slightly acidic, and its alcohol content is
quite high. What stands out is its freshness, which,
added to its flavour, creates a most captivating
bouquet. In addition to this one, other types of
grapes are used such as loureira, treixadura and
caíño blanco.
Wine Center Ribera Sacra
5
4. The Ribeira Sacra (sacred river
bank), is so named due to its location
on the banks of the Miño and Sil rivers,
in a stunning natural area with the
greatest concentration of monasteries
and medieval temples. This region is
said to be one of the best hidden
treasures on the Iberian peninsula,
so well worth putting it on your
bucket list for the future.
It produces very interesting,
high quality red wines, thanks
to its unique microclimate which
enables a perfect wine maturing
process. Reds generally come
from the mencía grape, and
whites obtained from albariño
and godello. This region was
given DO status in 1996, and
its vineyards around the river
gorges are highly popular with
visitors. The reds are most
dominant here with over 45,000
hectolitres of red produced vs 5,000 white, the
former of which are fruity with red and violet tones.
A good place to learn about the history of wine in
the region is the Centro del Vino in Monforte de
Lemos, now the town hall building, but was formerly
a hospital and a casino.
Last month (Nov 2020), the regional government of
Galicia gave awards to the best two wines from this
region, one being Prómine, from Bodegas Petrón,
and the other Peza deo Rei from Adega Cachín, both
red. However, historically, this is the birthplace of the
legendary ‘Amandi’, a wine that was held in such high
esteem by the Romans that they considered it to be the
real ‘gold of the Sil’, and a wine that would be produced
centuries later exclusively by the Benedictine monks for
the papacy.
5. Monterrei, meaning the king’s mountain, is located
to the south of Ourense and close to the border with
Portugal. Wine production is concentrated in Verín
and Monterrei, with good red and white wines. Among
the varieties of white grapes used are the native doña
blanca, godello and treixadura, whilst mencía, merenzao,
arauxa (tempranillo) and garnacha tintorera are the most
common grapes. The types of wines that are mainly
made are white, which are fresh, very pleasant and fruity.
Among the reds, the young ones stand out with their
great aromatic vividness, fruity and full-bodied.
The Galician people (Gallegos) are understandably proud
of their impressive range of native grapes and wines, and
have really developed the whole business of wine tours
and wine route short breaks, known as ‘enoturismo’
or wine tourism. The Galician government has various
recommended wine tour routes of varying durations
which you can follow, and incorporates places of interest
to stop off on the way. Each region has a dedicated
website, where you can customise your wine break to
your particular requirements. See rutadelvinoriasbaixas.

AT THE MOVIES
Films to look out for in the coming months
Lost at Christmas
Released 2020
Information
Lost at Christmas, is the story of an unlikely romance
in the Scottish Highlands. It’s one of those romcom
(romantic comedy) films that gives you that warming
‘feel good’ factor, in the same way as that other lovable
Christmas movie, ‘The Holiday’ back in 2006. Lost at
Christmas doesn’t have the same kind of star studded
cast, but it contains all the elements that make festive
films great: the promise of magic, log fires and an
exploration of the true meaning of Christmas. And
star wise, it does have Doctor Who legend Sylvester
McCoy and Still Game’s Sanjeev Kohli.
It’s a simple story, but simple doesn’t mean bad! After
both experiencing heartbreak, Jen (Natalie Clark) and
Rob (Kenny Boyle), meet at a train station in a scene
not unlike Brief Encounter; both are keen to get as
far away from the Highlands as possible, but heavy
snowfall and train cancellations mean they have to
take refuge in a nearby lodge. Jen is keen to make
the most of the holiday season, whereas Rob, and the
other guests at the lodge, are bogged down by their
own frustrations and initially unwilling to participate in
any festivities.
film ‘Perfect Strangers’ screened at the Cannes film
festival in 2015. The main criticism could be that the
characters aren’t as well developed as they could be,
especially the secondary ones, which could have been
due to the source material originally being so succinct.
Despite this, the cast have excellent chemistry, allowing
for moments of real tenderness, particularly in a scene
between Jen and Ernie (Sylvester McCoy), a hotel
guest. The central couple also share a remarkable onscreen
connection.
The Glasgow based filmmaker’s motivation for the
film was that he felt there was a lack of homegrown
Crimbo flicks. Ryan says: “It’s been a long time since
we’ve had things like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero.
We don’t get films like that anymore. I’ve always been
about trying to make optimistic, escapist films - with a
Scottish backdrop.”
As with many Christmas films, the formula remains the
same: people who do not want to enjoy Christmas
end up enjoying Christmas. Directed by multi-award
winning and BAFTA Nominated film director and
actor Ryan Hendrick, it is based on his second short

What should I do
to get fit?
by Gavin Sunshine
Gavin Sunshine
Great Britain international
athlete, British record holder
and personal trainer
What’s going on this time folks?
So…. Christmas is here - what’s the plan?
Get fit for Christmas? No! No one’s coming to visit,
I’m going to wear a tracksuit on Christmas day and I’m
watching the TV. There’s no New Year’s Eve party, so
who cares? I’ll get fit in the New Year... I’ll try that yoga
on the beach...join a fitness group that does boxing...
or I’ll do one of those classes with that lady... Or I could
join the gym and do 5 classes a day for 3 days. I know
- I’ll get a personal trainer and they can do the workout
for me!
Maybe biking... I said we’d buy a bike when we moved
here. There’s a sale at that bike shop we have been
walking past for the last 15 years since we moved
here. Last resort, I’ll join the walking group... No wait!
They go up hills.
I know what to do, I’ll park the car close but not too far
from the Parque Commercial (commercial centre) and
walk the dog to Masko. Coffee, peanuts, doughnuts,
orange juice and water for a euro!!!
18
I might have two, well I did walk from the hotel. Or
my all-time favourite is stopping smoking, drinking and
doing a diet in January. Which stops on the 1st Jan,
cos you fell over on New Year’s Eve!
IS THIS YOU?
I think we’re all a little guilty of this, as we fight our way
through this next phase of the pandemic, Brexit and any
other excuse we use to attack our own personal wellbeing.
The bottom line is - no one actually likes training
unless it is integrated into your social environment.
What I mean by that is, are my friends doing it? If the
answer is no, then it is very likely we will not keep it up
for too long.
Cycling, golf and locally pádel and bowls have become
friendship groups, social clubs or competition clubs.
For quite some time, groups have tried to make their
clubs all inclusive; some do it in order to keep the top
players engaged, and others do it to generate money,
but most do it because they enjoy the company of
those who play that sport.
There’s one other group - those who train alone as
this is their only space where the world leaves them
alone. They don’t need groups, friends or anything to
motivate them; they know what they want and that
is just to be left alone and have time to themselves.
It’s not that they are unsociable or don’t like people
or miserable; they are just triathletes.
So how do you choose a group locally?
1. Is there anything my friends do that I might like
to try?
Ask your closest friends first and move down the
line; remember you have more chance of keeping
it up if you enjoy it.
2. If you have a choice of activities, watch them
on TV first, or go and have a trial session. Do this
before you make a huge commitment and do it
now, even if you’re going to wait for the New Year.
3. What does each activity offer me? Let’s have a
look at a few.
Yoga on the beach
Well, it looks like there’s an introductory level group
that takes place on Mojácar beach. I have a client
that goes, she enjoys it and does not feel too silly,
everyone there is a similar level and there are no show
offs. It’s weather permitting, and you’ll also get some
companionship there. Introductory yoga is likely to
cover the first 10 moves or so that you need to start
yoga. But before that what is yoga?
Yoga originates from India; it was and still is a
meditation practice conducted by Hindus. In the past
30 years, it’s become much more popular as a fitness
exercise. Going into a pose of position, it allows for
the body to stretch and find a hold that challenges
the muscles, cardiovascular system and gut to bring
the body to work as one to get through the task or
move. This is done by putting the muscle joint into a
position and getting the body respiratory system to do
the work in order to maintain the position. I like this
form as the body has to work together to get to the
end. You can work as hard or as easy as you like.
Good fun energy level: 3 / 5.
Boot camp on the beach
Our brains tell us that we can all do a boot camp, it’s
not that hard, it’s a bit of fun. Take time when deciding
to do a boot camp! The group class is intense and
you will push yourself. It’s human nature, I have spoken
with a couple of people that go, and it’s fun and hard
work, technically challenging but you will learn and for
sure if you keep it up you will get fit. I like boot camps,
delivering is easier than doing them.
Cycling groups
Massive start-up costs, but as an avid cyclist, it’s
amazing as a group activity. You’ll be paired up with
someone your own standard, or you’ll be left behind.
They stop regularly for coffee and toast and food. As
a 5-time ironman, I recommend cycling.
The gym
So now we’re talking, I love the gym. Loads of
people, lots of classes and a real opportunity to find
a community within them. Gym are good for confident
people who like to be around other people. If you’re
not gym people, it will never be for you. I’m a gym
19
person, I am comfortable there. I go with my friends,
challenge myself in every session. Sometimes with my
friends, sometimes just me and my headphones. My
wife hates the gym; she says it’s full of *** - not sure
if she is talking about me or not!! Check the gym out
first, big weights all over the place, it’s body building
or cross fit style. Loads of machines is the easiest
starting place. And have a look at the classes. Make
sure they’re free.
Personal training and small groups
What can I say – it’s the crème de la crème!! You will be
looked after by someone like me, who knows their stuff
– so much more than just a gym trainer. Good ones
come from a sporting or sports science background.
They will specialise in a particular field. Good personal
trainers don’t work in gyms, the same as a good
gym instructor doesn’t work in personal training
studios. It’s like taking your car to a valeter for a service.
Pick a trainer who wants to help you, not themselves.
And if this is your thing, give them feedback. When I
get feedback from clients, their personal achievements
go through the roof. Personal training or small group
training focus solely on you and what you want to
achieve. What is your reason for undertaking fitness
training? Pick the right trainer according to YOUR
goals and needs. This time it is ALL ABOUT YOU!
Now let’s look at the types of clubs around…..
Bowls I have never needed bowls, I have historically
trained a few though! Commonwealth champions
who take it quite seriously and need and want the
competitive edge. There are several clubs locally and I
believe they all want new members and have rec and
competitive options, it’s a good form of fitness and
gets you out in the fresh air. Great community and it
might be your thing.
Pádel
Be careful with this one from the injury point of view if
playing at a high level! I’m forever seeing people for
rehab or treatments for twisted ankles, wrists fingers
and backs. An amazing sport that challenges every
part of the body and the mind! On a recreational
level, it’s a great activity, gets you fit and moving, and
helps with coordination. There are plenty of groups
and clubs locally that can help you get into this great
national sport.
Boxing
Great fun and you get to hit things, not people
- just pads and bags. Boxing is great for cardio
and coordination, there is a great camaraderie in this
type of training. So, what to choose?
Clearly, I’d want all of you to come and see me for
personal training and small groups, but that’s not what
I’m selling, look at the things above and which stands
out to you? If one catches your eye, look it up online
and see where the closest group is. If you need any
help or advice, send me a message to 643 398 074
(Gavin, Urban Retreat)
So, here’s a few things to do this month; everyone can
do these:
• Pick 5 exercises from the list below, do five on
Monday and Wednesday. Do five on Tuesday
and Thursday and you guessed it - do all ten
on Saturday!
• Running on the spot.
• Jumping jacks: jump up, open your legs and
take your arms above your head.
• Alternating lunges: keep one foot and step
forward, and bend your leg at the same time,
then do the same with the other foot.
• Leg raisers. Lie on your back and bring your legs
up to 90 degrees; if it’s too hard, do it with knees
bent.
• Side to sides. Jump from side-to-side landing on
each foot, try to make it a hop not a step.
• Squats. Exactly that - the lower the better
• Plank, not a Tommy Cooper joke. Either with
your hands or elbows, hold a press up position
and then try to keep your position straight.
• Press ups. From the hips, knees or normal.
Either normal or mountain climbers
• Hands like a press up and and run on the spot in
a bent over position.
• Leg in and outs.
Lie on your back and make a continuous v
position with your feet.
So the exercise is 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off for
5 minutes.
And that’s it. Good luck - let me know how it goes.

LANGUAGE & CULTURE
The things we say or do!
The History of some English
Expressions and Unusual
Spanish Idioms
by Louise Crawford
Whether you’re visiting or living in Spain, most people are
aware of the importance and benefits of being able to
communicate in the main official language of Spanish,
and even if you aren’t able to speak it fluently, the Spanish
people generally appreciate anyone making the effort
to converse in their lingo, whether it be uttering a few
words or phrases to having a reasonable conversation,
regardless of the grammatical errors made. As a qualified
language trainer, I know first hand about the kinds of
problems, dilemmas and pitfalls that you can be faced
with when trying to make yourself understood in a foreign
language.
One thing is for sure, language is a fascinating beast,
whichever one we’re talking about - or in!! Some are
more logical than others, but every language has its own
peculiarities, or shall we say, idiosyncracies, and that
is what gives them a unique character. And of course,
whether we like it or not, languages are constantly
evolving, as they have to, in order to reflect our ever
changing world. New words and phrases, the posh word
for them being ‘neologisms’, used to get passed on only
by word of mouth, but with the advent of writing, printing,
the media, the internet, phones, social media and the
like, new words or sayings spread faster than ever. In
fact, new words and phrases are now categorised as
‘memes’, which is a word attributed as being invented by
British evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins in 1976,
in his book ‘The Selfish Gene’. ‘Meme’, which comes
from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated” refers to
the little bits of information, concepts or behaviour that
are passed on from one person to another by imitation.
In language, the fittest memes survive and continue to
be used for years and years. Just think about the most
memorable advertising slogans that you still retain in
your head – some of them are ancient! My favourites
like Tesco’s ‘Every little helps’ came out in 1993, ‘Beanz
meanz Heinz’ in 1967 and L’Oréal’s ‘Because I’m Worth
It!’ is an incredible 49, nearly 50 years old! In this brand
new section, this time, we take a look firstly at the origins
of a few favourite English expressions that have stood the
test of time , and in the second part, select a few funny
or unusual Spanish idioms and explain what they mean!
Did you know….?
‘To bite the dust’ meaning ‘to fall down dead’ actually
alludes to falling off a horse. It originates from Wild West
stories of the violent times in nineteenth century America
before order was established. It was a common term
in the 2nd World War, especially in the RAF, and is now
commonly used in sporting or competitive terms – as well
as being in that famous song by Queen!!
‘a Catch 22 situation’ meaning ‘a lose-lose’ situation,
as whichever option you go for, there is a problem and
you can’t win. It derives from the title of a satirical novel
published in 1955 by former advertising copywriter,
28
Joseph Heller, which is about a US air force captain in
the 2nd World War, whose main aim in life is to avoid
being killed. The best way for a pilot to do this was to be
grounded due to insanity, and he coined that ‘Catch 22’!
‘Cuando las ranas críen pelo’ = lit ‘when frogs grow hair’;
figurative meaning: ‘it’ll never happen or is impossible’.
The equivalent in English would be ‘when pigs might fly’!
‘Over the top’ meaning something that goes beyond
what is acceptable, appropriate or of good taste/sense.
It originated from the trenches of the First World War
when soldiers were described as ‘going over the top’
when scrambling out of the trenches to attack the enemy.
It was also the title of a bawdy television show in the
1980s, which became known only by its initials, OTT, and
of course is now used in present-day language.
‘To have a bone to pick’ meaning to discuss a difference
of opinion, settle a misunderstanding about something,
or express a complaint. The bone probably referred
originally to the bone of contention that was thrown to
dogs fighting over it. It is believed that it dates back to
the 16th century, but could have developed from a similar
phrase ‘to have a crow to pluck’ which was used about a
hundred years earlier, when the crow symbolised discord.
‘llamar al pan pan y al vino vino’ = lit ‘to call bread, bread
and wine, wine’; meaning ‘to say things clearly and as
they are’. The English equivalent is ‘call a spade, a spade’.
And now let’s turn to Spanish. There are some strange
idioms in English, which are actually very funny when
you think about them in the literal sense, but of course,
we’ve grown used to hearing and saying them, so we
don’t even think too much about them. The same goes
for some common Spanish idioms, which you may or
may not already be familiar with. We’ve translated them
into English anyway for learning purposes, both with their
literal and figurative meaning, and also for the humorous
element. Ahh the richness of language!!
‘Pagar el pato’ = literally ‘to pay for the duck’ but actually
means ‘to pay for someone else’s mistakes’! The English
equivalent is ‘carry the can’!
And a couple of the funniest:
‘tomar el pelo’ = lit ‘to take the hair’, meaning ‘to trick or
fool someone’. In English, we also refer to the body, but
instead of hair, it’s a leg – ‘to pull someone’s leg’.
‘Ni flores’/ ‘No saber ni papa de’ = lit ‘not even flowers’
and also ‘not know even a potato about’, meaning ‘to
know nothing about’
If you’ve got any particular humorous common
expressions or slogans in English or Spanish
and know their origin, do get in touch by email
design@ultimatealmeria.com and we’ll feature them in
the next edition!

SPORTS PAGES
In-depth with a sports star
Jessica Learmonth,
2021 Tokyo Olympic Triathlete
*
In these very torrid pandemic ridden times, we all need
something or someone to inspire us and trigger hope
in us that next year must surely be a better one for us
all. And personally I find very driven, focused sports
people are the very type to instil me with positivity, and
certainly talking to British triathlete Jess Learmonth,
she is no exception to that rule. I felt privileged to catch
up directly with Jess recently, who many people will
know, is a top class triathlete.
She has a current ITU ranking of no 4 in the world, and is
a European, Commonwealth and World Triathlon Series
medal winner. The ITU ranking is used to determine
Olympic qualification, and so it’s no surprise that Jess
will be representing GB at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics –
assuming the dreaded C word doesn’t mess it up! In
just eight years, Leeds born and bred Jess has spiralled
from competing in her local Tadcaster charity triathlon
to the Tokyo Olympics, and not only that, but she never
allowed the fact that she came relatively late to the
sport (aged 24) to discourage her from aiming for the
very top! Now that is impressive! Here we get an insight
into Jess’s life, her training schedule, her motivation and
even some tips for those of us mere mortals striving to
keep ourselves fit on a more modest level!
So Jess, thanks for taking time out of your schedule
to talk to me. For those of us who don’t know your
story, how did you get into triathlons, and how do
you keep motivated on your sport?
“I did things the opposite way to most athletes
in that I went into full-time work first and then
discovered the sport almost by accident. When I
was young, I did a lot of swimming and competed
for the City of Leeds Swimming Club, but I got
fed up of the intensity of it all by the time I was a
teenager, and I didn’t swim for around six years. I
was working full-time in a supermarket and there
was this charity triathlon in Tadcaster which I
decided to enter. It snowballed from there really!
I was a spectator at the London 2012 Olympics,
then I helped competitors prepare for Rio 2015
Olympics, now it’s my turn to compete! One
thing that hasn’t changed one bit is my mentality.
I just want to go for it and enjoy it. Camaraderie is
a major motivational factor too. I do a lot of training
with Georgia (Taylor-Brown), and we support each
other.”
34
Can you give us an insight into what a typical
training day or week looks like?
“Well I train every day, but Friday is my easiest day, as
I don’t go out cycling in the afternoons, and also at
the weekends, I don’t go swimming. This is what my
weekly routine consists of:
• Monday: Swim 90 mins, ride 2 hours,
• run 35 mins, gym 60 mins
• Tuesday: Swim 90 mins, run 60-80 mins,
ride 60 mins
• Wednesday: Swim 90 mins, run 50 mins,
ride 3-5 hours, gym 60 mins
• Thursday: Swim 90 mins, run 50 mins,
ride 2 hours

• Saturday: Run 60-90 mins, ride 2-3 hours
• Sunday: ride 3-5 hours, run 90 mins
If you had your time again, what would you do
differently? Would you have concentrated on
another sport, such as golf or football, which you
also played as a youngster?
“Actually, I do have a slight regret. My dad was a triathlete,
and set up the first triathlete club in Yorkshire. I used to
watch him a lot, and at 17, I was considering entering
a triathlete event, but then I decided not to. I wish I had
done now, as I could have got into the sport earlier.“
It’s a pretty intense schedule!”
How have the lockdowns affected you and how do
you remain focused on what you want to achieve?
“Well the first lockdown was pretty harsh, as we could
only train once a day and were only allowed to have
pool and group training sessions on private property.
This second one isn’t too bad really, as we can pretty
much train as normal. I tend to be pessimistic, which
means that I mentally prepare myself for the worst,
and then if something doesn’t happen, it doesn’t
affect me as much. But with the Olympics, I tell myself
constantly that it will go ahead and that I have to be
as well prepared as I possibly can. Plus it also helps
greatly training with Georgia and having my partner,
Jon, who is very supportive. It feels like we’re in it
together.“
How do you manage the balance between your
training and your personal life?
“I think that is one of the hardest things about it. It
is a struggle, as there’s little time to see friends and
family. I’m very lucky that my partner Jon is interested
in cycling and running too, so he comes out on the
bike with me or comes running. He’s taken a year off
work to be with me in Leeds and support me. I’m also
fortunate that my family are very understanding too.“
How do you prepare for the climatic conditions in
Tokyo, given that in July/August, it is extremely hot
and they have high humidity levels? That’s pretty
different to the weather in Leeds!
“Well, of course we did have the warm-up event in
Tokyo in July just gone, and although it was cooler than
it normally would be, it was very humid. So that gave
us a good taster of things to come. We also have the
benefit though of the heat chamber facilities that British
Triathlon have. It is basically a room which can create
different altitudes and different temperatures, and we
then train in them and get used to hydrating properly
and managing our bodies in those conditions. We have
excellent support and professional help provided by
British Triathlon. For example, we have a physiologist
who do tests on how much we sweat. Unfortunately,
I’m a heavy sweater, which is not a great thing, so I
have to be careful to avoid a massive loss of sodium,
which can occur if you have insufficient electrolytes.
They tell us how much and how often to drink. It’s very
technical. We also work closely with nutritionists, as it
can be difficult to manage your metabolism, and the
other major challenge is avoiding stress fractures and
injuries generally. Our diet is not prescriptive, but we
are well educated food wise and eat during training, for
example on the bike.“
35
Given that we, our magazine and our
readers are in Spain, it’d be interesting
to know if you’ve ever visited Spain and
whether you’d ever want to live anywhere
else other than Yorkshire?
“Yes a few times. I went to Águilas to a
training camp there, earlier in my career, and
we might be going again next year. I have also
been cycling around Banyoles, near Girona –
it’s great for cycling around there, and I’m
keen to go there again. As to other places to
live, I’d choose Mallorca, but Jon, my partner,
isn’t so keen. France would be good too!.“
Finally, Jess, can you offer any fitness/
exercise tips or advice for the average
man or woman looking to improve their
fitness or be better at their sport?
“I’d say that having a structure and targets
help for sure. You should sit down and plan a
routine. Write down what you want to do and
when you will do it. And also list your aims.
Then plan to do it early in the day!“
Well thanks very much, Jess, for giving us an
insight into your sporting life. I wish you the
very best with your training, and I can’t wait
to see you compete at the Tokyo Olympics
next year!
*Triathlon is a multi-discipline sport consisting of
swimming, cycling and running. The standard
Olympic distances are: 1500m (swim), 40km (bike),
10km (run).

Is it Safe to go to the Dentist
During these Pandemic Times?
Dra. Alicia Jiménez – Pinzón
Dental offices across the country have opened their
doors for routine appointments after postponing
hygiene and non urgent care for several months due to
coronavirus. Because teeth are attached to the body, it
is very important to take care of them. If you neglect the
oral condition of your teeth for a long time, it can become
more complicated later on. But things are going to look a
little different for returning patients.
The biggest risk in terms of contracting Covid 19 isn’t
connected with the physical locality itself, especially with
all of the new precautionary measures in place. To date,
no COVID-19 outbreaks have occurred in dental settings
or amongst dental health care professionals.
Coronavirus screening will become an important part of
the check-in process. Expect a series of questions how
you have been feeling leading up to your appointment,
places you have travelled to, and any contact you may
have had with potential positive cases.
You must remember to bring a mask and you must also
come alone if possible. Additionally, you have to arrive
on time, because waiting rooms have to be as empty as
possible. If there is another patient, you must keep an
approximate distance of 1.5 metres. You will be told to
sanitise your hands and shoes with antiseptic gel and
spray. Magazines, toys and any other items have been
removed from the waiting room in an effort to keep
common areas sterile throughout the day. We use also
air purifiers with medical HEPA filters and UV-C filters to
clean the waiting room.
Everything you touch in the waiting room will be
disinfected between patients and if you have to fill out
paperwork, you will be given a pen to keep.
Your dentist and all the staff also will look different. They
now require more personal protective equipment (PPE) –
such as N95 respirator masks, gowns, face shields, and/
or head and foot coverings.
You must keep your mask on until you have been told to
remove it and our clinic will be sterilised with a UV-C box
during your treatment. Before starting the dental check
up, the hygienist will take your temperature and tell you
to rinse and gargle your mouth during 40 seconds with a
CPC mouthwash or 1% hydrogen peroxide.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
recommends that dentists avoid procedures that
generate spray and splashes from a patient’s mouth,
since coronavirus travels via small respiratory droplets
that can linger in the air for hours. So routine cleaning,
polishing and other elective procedures that require
plaque to be scraped from the tooth’s surface with a
mechanical instrument may be unavailable or modified
by using hand tools if the dental office doesn´t have an
extra oral dental suction system. This extra suction helps
considerably to reduce bacterial and virus infections, so
is a must nowadays in dental clinics. Also, doors must be
closed and windows open to improve ventilation.
For some potentially high risk treatments, your dentist
may prescribe a Covid test.
Once the treatment is finished, you will put your mask
back on and sanitise your hands before leaving the
room. All the surfaces and cabinets will be sterilised as
usual with high level measures and that can take a little
longer than usual, particularly if your dentist uses UV-C
light disinfection systems. These specialised lamps
produce an ultraviolet (UV) light that disrupts growth and
deactivates existing growths, aiding in the disinfection of
surfaces, water and more.
So now you know that going to the dentist is safe, even
during these pandemic times, but please reschedule your
appointment if you or someone you have been in contact
with has had symptoms of Covid 19 in the last 2 weeks .

An interview with...
Tony Vasey
Author and Playwright
4 th interview ‘Hidden Talents’ series
by Louise Crawford
Our ‘Hidden Talent’ series focuses on local residents
with a little known talent. So far, we have interviewed
a Mojácar author, a bird watcher and a Spanish
photographer born and bred in Garrucha. This time, I
met up with Tony Vasey, who started visiting this area
in the 1990s, and loved it so much that he decided
to move here in 2011. He has lived in Mojácar Pueblo
for the last few years, in a picturesque, traditional
whitewashed house. Tony, who spent a large
proportion of his life in Yorkshire (UK) has had an
absorbing career working as a wardrobe assistant/
Cast of Last of the Summer Wine
dresser for film and tv production companies.
Having studied drama at the local college in Redcar,
Yorkshire, he then went on to study drama at the
Academy of Live & Recorded Arts in Wandsworth in
1982, and after completing the two year course, he
started working on film and tv sets.
‘Darcy & the Hummers’
So Tony, tell us about your time working in the film
and tv industry.
“Well it was actually hard graft to be honest - and
working long hours too! I was in the industry for 16
years and in that time, I worked freelance for a plethora
of companies such as Shepperton Studios, Thames TV
and Dreamworks on the likes of Coronation Street, The
Bill, London’s Burning and Last of the Summer Wine to
name just a few. Then there were films like Lady Jane
Grey, First Night and Saving Private Ryan, as well as
working on children’s tv sets such as Rainbow, which
was the first programme he worked on for Thames TV.
Not only did I manage the costumes, but I had to look
after the main character, Bungle, with and without his
‘head’! One of the most fulfilling assignments I worked
on was ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ back in the early
2000s, where my job was to effectively be the personal
assistant to the two main characters, ‘Truly’ played by
Frank Thornton and ‘Clegg’ by Peter Sallis. They were
such nice, decent people to work with, and we all got
along very well.“
42
And what about your life beyond your wardrobe
assistant/dresser days?
”My real passion is writing – both books and plays.
I started writing in earnest in the 1990s, with my first
book being The Adventures of Lily Lifeboat, described
by many as a ‘charming little children’s book which
will delight 4-6 years olds and their parents’. I was
inspired to write it following the arrival in Whitby of
their first lifeboat back in those days, ‘The George
and Mary Webb’, which Lily is modelled on. It cost me
£2000 to self-publish and 2,000 copies were sold.
The book was beautifully illustrated by Guisborough
artist, Jacqueline Baines (now Beaumont), and
from Tony’s ideas, she created over 17 endearing
characters such as Yasmin Yacht, McTavish
Dredger, Sandy Shore, Sam Swingbridge and Lenny
Lighthouse. Since publication in 1996, I have written
128 short stories about these characters, which have
not been published, but which I intend to turn into
‘theatre plays of involvement’ for 5-15 year olds. Of
course, at the moment thanks to Covid, all theatrical
production has come to a halt, but hopefully, theatre
will be able to re-open at some point soon.”
‘The Adventures of Lily Lifeboat’ Book cover
What other projects are you working on then or
involved with, and have any been inspired or
influenced by living in Spain?
“I love writing, acting and drama. When I first moved
here, I did a few plays for Indalo Players, an amateur
dramatic group based in Mojácar, and I have a
number of other books and plays that I’ve written
and that I’ve got bubbling away. Yes I certainly am
influenced by Spanish culture and history, and in fact,
I use locations and events that have happened in
Spain as the backdrop for my books and plays now,
but I give them my special fictional twist to them.
‘Darcy and backing singer’
I have another two unpublished children’s
books that are ready to be turned into plays. One is
called Darcy Bee and the Hummers, which is about
a rhythm and blues band that arrive in Garrucha and
perform all around the area, however their home is
in the fictional place of Beesville. Illustrations of the
members of the band have been drawn by Mike
Weston, a Mojácar resident and artist, who used to
run the Arriba café in Mojácar. Darcy Bee is the lead
singer and best-dressed of the band, then you’ve got
the likes of Benny Bee on drums, Mandy Bee on lead
guitar and road manager Swank Bee, to name just a
few. The story really lends itself to be performed on
stage by children, and this is my aspiration of how it
will eventually come to life! I have another 20 plays
copyrighted and ready for production, including one
for adult production entitled ‘The Blind Flamenco
Dancer’, which is about Christina, the blind dancer
and her attempts to halt war in her native Seville. It is
set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War in
1936-39, and is a poignant tale that ultimately ends in
tragedy with her and a dancer friend being shot and
killed by the Nationalists in the last scene. Nothing
would make me happier than to see my works
performed on the stage here in Spain or elsewhere
in fact. I frequently send my plays to theatre groups
across the globe, and have had expressions of
interest, but until theatre can open up again, nothing
will happen till then. I am a very driven, organised
person, and so in the meantime, I keep on writing,
and waiting for the breakthrough to come.”
‘The Adventures of Lily Lifeboat’ is available to
purchase on Amazon.es, although the actual
illustrated cover is not shown. The ISBN is:
978-1850721871. If you’re interested in finding out
more about Tony’s plays, feel free to contact him on

Superhero Assistance Dogs!
by Bérengère Latapie
It is amazing how many things our pets are capable of
doing for us. Dogs, in particular have an amazing ability
to learn and perform a wide variety of tasks. In some
cases, they manage to fulfil some of the functions that we
cannot do ourselves, as is the case with the wonderful
therapy and assistance dogs. Let’s hone in on what
some of these fantastic helpers actually do.
Medical alert dogs
They are trained to forewarn the handler of a medical
alert which poses a risk to their life. For example, they
are used by people suffering from epilepsy, diabetes etc
and are trained to warn the handler or the environment
when a crisis arrives. The use of medical alert dogs is
fundamentally based on the particularly developed
sense of smell of these companion animals. Indeed, if
the human nose is endowed with around 5 million smell
receptors, dogs have an average of 225 million!
Dogs can detect medical alert
48
Dogs can detect COVID-19
Currently, with the expansion of the Covid-19 pandemic,
dogs have been trained in different countries so that they
can detect Covid-19 in people. In Finland, they recently
launched a pilot project with a team of 10 dogs and their
instructors, who are used to detect travellers infected with
Covid-19 at Helsinki airport. According to an article on
www.traveler.es, Finavia is the company responsible for
maintaining and developing the Finnish airport network.
Once it is given the ‘legal’ green light to proceed, the
dogs will detect if passengers are carrying the virus or
not, and will carry out their work in a separate cabin,
to avoid any direct contact, and thus eliminate the risk
of infection. Passengers undergoing the test will have
to rub a piece of gauze on their skin, then deposit it in
a container, which will then be sniffed by the dog. The
detection of Covid-19 is easy for dogs, plus they only
need a much smaller sample than that required by the
current PCR tests; a dog only needs 10-100 molecules
to identify the virus (compared to the 18,000,000 required
for PCR). In addition, they are able to identify the virus
before symptoms appear.

Mobility assistance dogs
These dogs, are specially trained to help people with
a disability that prevents them from doing physical
activity, for example, people in a wheelchair, or with
balance problems. They will help with the tasks of
daily life, both inside and outside the home. For a
person with reduced mobility, the simplest jobs of
everyday life can be challenging or simply impossible
to perform, or induce some pain. Thanks to assistance
dogs, life becomes easier.
After a long selection and training process of around
2 years, assistance dogs are able to play a critical
role in helping and assisting in everyday life: They can
pick up and bring an object out of reach of a disabled
person: on the ground, high up, in a cupboard, under
a piece of furniture.
They can pick up and transport, without damaging
them, all kinds of objects, from a credit card to
a bottle of water, to a pair of glasses, a remote
control or a coin. They also open doors (entrances,
wardrobes, drawers), look for a phone to take it to
its handler, go to the stores to help pay, for example
when a counter is inaccessible to its handler, the dog
can hand over a purse and then accept what they are
given eg a shopping bag or ticket, and a multitude of
other things to make life easier for its handler. It will
also learn to behave in any situation, as it is able to
go wherever its handler goes, ie to school, the shops,
theatre, cinema, supermarkets, etc
an important role in terms of moral support and
social integration. The wheelchair is no longer an
obstacle, the dog makes it easier for people to start
a conversation, they are more likely to approach a
person with a disability when they have a dog by their
side.
Visual assistance known as ‘guide dogs’
Who help blind or visually impaired people. The blind
person and the dog form a team, the handler decides
on the route and the dog avoids the obstacles and
follows the instructions given to them. Thus, the
guide dog provides the visually impaired with fluidity
in movement, safety and speed.
The dog learns his right and his left, he can find a
seat, a bench, indicate doors (train, bus, buildings,
etc), find and point to stairs, lockers etc And above
all, he learns to avoid and point out obstacles: curbs,
holes, objects on the ground, rear-view mirrors,
branches, signalling signs, etc.
He will avoid approaching the void (train platform),
crowds, is capable of retrieving objects that fall to
the ground (eg keys, coins), and can even memorize
several routes and take initiatives, or disobey orders
in case of danger. In addition, they give the blind
person more confidence, friendship and security.
A person with a guide dog will not only feel more
confident about everyday living but are comforted by
the presence of a constant friend.
In many cases, they become the hands or legs of
the disabled person, but assistance dogs also play
The companionship offered by the guide dog helps
reduce stress, depression, and loneliness. Also,
with a guide dog it is easier to get out, which means
the disabled person will exercise more, which has a
positive effect on their physical health.

Hearing dogs
These dogs help by recognising different types of
sounds and alerting its handler. In order to be as
independent as possible, a person with deafness
needs to know what is going on around them.
For example, a trained signal dog can let its handler
know when certain devices sound eg door bells, the
phone, the alarm clock, the fire alarm, an appliance
(washing machine, microwave, etc.), the cry of a baby
etc. When it hears one of these sounds, it will warn
the user with a gesture that will be taught, such as
touching the foot with its paw, or resting its front legs
on the leg, or touching the hand with the nose, and
once it has attracted attention, it will direct the person
to the source of the sound.
Dogs are trained in such a way that when they
distinguish dangerous sounds that have been taught
to them (a horn for example in the street) the dog
jumps with its two front legs to warn and stop the
user.
All these skills can completely change the lives of deaf
people, restoring confidence, helping them to interact
with the world, allaying fear and offering unconditional
love.
providing a physical barrier between their handler and
others, allowing them to retain their sense of personal
space.
It is difficult to quantify just how valuable the
assistance dog is for people with a disability, mental
or physical condition. Little by little, laws are changing
to allow access to wheelchair service dogs and guide
dogs, but many users still do not have the ability to
take their dog everywhere.
There is also a shortage of training centres due to the
high cost involved (it can cost between € 20,000 and
€ 50,000, to prepare a service dog to hand over to
a disabled or blind person), and they depend almost
entirely on donations. Consequently there is high
demand for few dogs, which makes it a slow, difficult
process for those in need to benefit from a therapy
dog. Hopefully, in the near future, these economic
and legal barriers will disappear, so that anyone who
needs it can count on four-legged help.
Some entities in Spain that arrange assistance dogs
for you are: AEPA (Asociación Española de Perros de
Asistencia), Fundación Bocalán, ARCADYS, Educan
and the Asociación Lealcan de Integración Canina.
Dogs providing therapeutic, emotional and social
assistance
For example, dogs that help people with autism
spectrum disorder, called TEA dogs in Spain
(trastornos del espectro autista). The dog helps to
improve their emotional, social and communication
skills, and also intervenes in everyday life at the level
of physical help. Also included are the dogs that
support people with psychological disorders, that
assist in nursing homes, prisons, drug addict centres,
etc
Another type that fits in this category is psychiatric
service dogs, which help people suffering from
issues like depression, anxiety and most often
post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD can affect
people who have been in highly traumatic, high risk
situations such as military conflicts, natural disasters,
terrorism and other life-altering events, such as
car crashes. Service dogs help them feel safer
by doing things like entering a building first, and

LOCAL BOOKSHELF
Featured good reads or references...
For this edition only, we’re doing a slightly different ‘Bookshelf’ and have selected just 2 ‘labour of love’ books written
by local authors, one from Mojácar and the other from Albox. It’s amazing what talented writers we have living in
our midst! See our competition page on how to win a copy of ‘The Professor of Diddling’. Both are available from
Amazon.es; ‘The Professor of Diddling’ is also available on Bookdepository.com. Both offer free delivery worldwide.
The Shadows of Valdeseta (paperback) can also be purchased direct from Mojácar Home Improvements
THE SHADOWS
OF VALDESETA
GERALDINE HAWKINS
ISBN-13: 979-8558747508
PAPERBACK & KINDLE
This is an intriguing tale of tragedy and heartbreak. Set
in the beautiful valleys of rural Spain, it centres on the
disappearance of the village of Valdeseta in the 1950s,
with the main character, Maggie Stanton, obsessed with
uncovering the truth as to what happened, which she
finally does, through her encounter with Micaela, the only
survivor of the village.
You will lose yourself in its twists and turns in a world
removed from reality, but yet simultaneously, it feels
palpable and plausible. The 150 page book is divided
into 20 easily digestible chapters, and is a heart warming
story, intertwining tragedy and grief. If you love anything
Spanish, you will become engrossed in the story. It is
peppered with Spanish dialogue and the author has gone
to great lengths to ensure that that it is as true to Spanish
life and culture as possible.
This first novel for Gerry has been a true labour of love,
having taken eight years to complete, mainly due to
other commitments. She relocated to Spain with her
husband, Jon in 2009, where they spent the next few
years rebuilding a ruin, undertaking most of the work
themselves. They are best known for being the owners
of Mojácar Home Improvements and Mojácar Homes &
Villas, a well-established company on Mojácar Playa.
THE PROFESSOR
OF DIDDLING
COLIN WILLIAMSON
ISBN-13: 979-8636575139
PAPERBACK & KINDLE
This will really appeal to cricket fans, and is a detailed,
fascinating account of Johnny Briggs, the renowned
Lancashire cricketer who was the first to take 100 test
wickets, a total of 2,212 in his career and the only one
to take a century and hat-trick in England and Australia
test matches.
The author took 25 years to write this book, which he
readily admits was thwarted by challenges, including
the need to do thorough research, suffering from writer’s
block, and his inability to spell correctly, all of which he
managed to overcome through sheer perseverance.
As a Lancashire cricketer supporter, he was inspired to
write the book after reading an account of how Briggs,
whilst playing his last match for England, became ill and
started foaming at the mouth. He suffered from epilepsy
but instead of taking him to hospital, he was taken directly
from the pitch to a lunatic asylum and stayed there until
he died, despite having been a first-class sportsman.
This 174 page book documents Brigg’s entire life from
1862 to 1902 and is divided into 9 chapters, each
detailing a phase of his life, starting with ‘The Early
Years’ through to ‘The Tragic Years’ and Epilogue. The
amount of intricate detail particularly in terms of match
scores, results, the endearing sketches and wealth of
photos make this a fascinating read, and reflects the
passion with which this book has been written.

This is the second novel from Damian Vargas, and
featured in our Bookshelf section in our Oct-Nov

Following on from the success of his first action thriller
novel, Six Hard Days in Andalusia in 2018, Damian
uses the backdrop of his home setting of the ‘Costa
del Sol’ to create another compelling, fast-moving
storyline set in Marbella in 1985, with lively dialogue
and colourful, gritty, fascinating characters. It’s a
prequel to the first, but you don’t need to have read
the first book to follow it.
Just answer the 2 questions opposite which are
connected with books we have reviewed in our
Bookshelf section over the last 3 editions. You
can check out all our 2020 editions online at

Second Major for World No:1
Dustin Johnson with Record Score
In October Dustin Johnson was holed up in a Las
Vegas hotel room self-quarantining for 11 days after
testing positive for COVID-19.
Now, after a week of record-setting brilliance in the
Masters, he can head to the exclusive Champions
Locker Room at Augusta National for the rest of his life.
The world No. 1 played to his ranking with a masterful
performance and put a few negative, tragic nearmisses
and collapses in the final rounds of past
majors behind him on Sunday by winning the coveted
green jacket in the 84th Masters.
With rounds of 65-70-65-68, Johnson, who tied for
second behind Tiger Woods last year, finished five
shots clear of the field and set the tournament scoring
record for 72 holes with his 20-under 268. That was
two shots clear of the previous mark set by Jordan
Spieth (2015) and Tiger Woods (1997) with 270.
Johnson, 36, is the only player ever to reach and
finish 20 under in a Masters. It was his second major
title and 24th PGA Tour title after the 2016 U.S. Open
at Oakmont.
And it fulfilled a childhood dream of the young boy
growing up on the outskirts of Columbia, South
Carolina, about an hour down the road, putting and
chipping long into the night fantasising about winning
the Masters.
“I still kind of think of it as a dream,” Johnson said.
“Growing up so close to here, it’s always been the
tournament that, since I played my first Masters, I
wanted to win the most.”
Johnson began the final round with a four-shot lead
but saw it dwindle to one shot by the sixth hole. But
there, he hit an 8-iron to six feet and made birdie and
never let anyone get within two shots the rest of the
way. He upped his unreachable lead with birdies at
13, 14 and 15. Coming up 18, the carefree, laid-back
Johnson didn’t know how big his lead was. Didn’t
matter. He tapped in for par and the man who has
been criticized for only winning one major up to then,
now had two.
“Obviously the first major’s the hardest, but then
I would say the second one is just as hard,” he
said. “They are all difficult to win. It’s just hard to get it
done in a major for some reason. I’ve had the lead a
couple of times and haven’t been able to finish it off,
and so it is very nice to have a lead and then play well
on Sunday and get the win. I couldn’t be happier.”
68
Johnson welled up with tears during the
ceremony following the tournament,
a rare sight for a man who hides
his emotions so well, especially
after he kept his emotions in
check when his brother and
caddy had some tears on
the eighteenth green. But
more than an hour later,
he was still beaming as
he walked the grounds
in his new green jacket –
size 42 long – that Woods
helped him slip on.
“Obviously having Tiger put it on
was awesome and unbelievable
and, you know, you wouldn’t want
it any other way,” Johnson said. “But
any guy could put it on me and I’d be
just fine.”
As for those who fell short, poor
Cameron Smith. He did something
Hogan, Snead, Player, Nicklaus,
Palmer, Woods and everyone else
who’s ever played here never did by
becoming the first player in Masters
history to shoot all four rounds in the
60s – 67-68-69-69. And he still lost by
five. He finished in a tie for second with
Masters rookie Sungjae Im at 15 under.
“I honestly can’t believe it, but just got to put it
down to just scrambling and digging deep,” Smith
said. “There were a few times throughout the week
where I could have let it slip away, and it didn’t.”
In solo fourth was world No. 3 Justin Thomas,
who shot 70 to finish at 12 under. Four-time major
champion Rory McIlroy stormed back from an
opening-round 75 to finish in a tie for fifth at 11 under
with Dylan Frittelli.
Five-time Masters champion Woods tied for 38th in his title
defence and made a 10 in the 12th hole in his round of 76, which
was his highest score ever in the Masters as a professional. His
score of 10 (he hit three balls into Rae’s Creek) was also the
highest score he’s ever recorded on any hole in his PGA Tour
career.
Many congratulations to Dustin Johnson!

Best Golf Drivers
So, what’s been happening so far as technology is
concerned – specifically with the big stick, and what are
the best golf drivers 2020 has to offer? Golf’s biggest
brands continue to break new ground on the innovation
front, making it an exciting time to buy a new driver.
Some of the most significant advancements concern face
technology and aerodynamics – and there are even more
options to choose from with every ability and swing type
well catered for.
Be honest with yourself about what you want to get
from your new driver. Do you want more distance? More
fairways? Less of a slice, perhaps?
Some drivers may even be able to provide a little bit of
everything, but you’ll only find this out by seeking the
advice of your pro and getting custom fitted.
TaylorMade SIM Driver
+ Modern, functional looks
+ Impressive distance
– Performance gains over M5 and M6 marginal
SIM stands for Shape In Motion and it gets its name from
the asymmetric sole design said to reduce aerodynamic
drag in the last three feet of the downswing to maximise
clubhead speed where it is needed most – just before
impact. All three drivers feature a raised crown and sole to
reduce drag and the Inertia Generator then moves the CG
low and back to optimise launch.
Replacing the Rogue range from 2018 comes Mavrik,
which benefits from the next generation of Callaway’s Flash
Face designed by an even more powerful super computer.
Artificial Intelligence was also used to improve the
acoustics of the driver and the faces of each driver are so
complex that Callaway is now using FS2S titanium – an
exotic material that is remarkably strong and light.
Mizuno ST200 Driver
+ Excellent value for money
+ Classic profile
– Not the easiest drivers to align at address
Delivering both low spin and significant forgiveness,
Mizuno’s ST200 is a high-stability driver built around a
resilient Beta rich forged, multi thickness Titanium face that
maintains its characteristics over time.
Meanwhile, the ST200G features twin 7g weights on longer
external tracks for even more effective weight movement,
allowing mid/low to ultra-low spin positions. We gained 15
yards on the older model with the new ST200G – great
performance and evidence that Mizuno’s drivers continue
to get stronger and stronger.
Speed Injected Twist Face remains but another difference
between the M-Series and SIM is the new chalk white topline
and ultra-light weight chromium carbon crown.
Callaway Mavrik Driver
+ User-friendly whilst producing competitive distance
+ Three models cater for different swings
– Some may say the orange cheapens the look

TRAVEL
REPORT
The Amazing Algarve!!
By Rachel Fieldhouse & Louise Crawford
One day, the ‘world will be our oyster’ again, and
in that spirit, we continue to write articles on great
places to visit, however being mindful of the fact that
long haul travel even in 2021 might not be feasible or
attractive to many given the pandemic times, our focus
is therefore on short haul, accessible destinations that
will still allow us to blow the metaphorical cobwebs
away and leave us feeling refreshed and reset. And
certainly the Algarve in Portugal fits the bill. It’s still
on the Iberian peninsula, being Spain’s neighbour, it’s
beautiful, hassle free, safe, and is very affordable. In
2019, Post Office Travel Money declared the Algarve
to be the second cheapest holiday destination for UK
travellers, after Bulgaria and ahead of Turkey.
The Algarve region is located in the southernmost
area of Portugal, bordered on the north by the Alentejo
region, on the east by our region of Andalucía, and
on the southern and western areas by the Atlantic
Ocean. Its name derives from the Arabic word ‘al-
Gharb’, meaning ‘the West’, and was so called by
the Moorish people who invaded it in 716. ‘The West’
refers to it being west of Andalucía, reflecting the
fact that it was part of the Moorish kingdom in the
south of the Iberian peninsula from the 8th to the 12 th
century. It has a surface area of around 5,000 km 2
and is home to about 440,000 inhabitants, which
accounts for 4.3% of the Portuguese population.
76
Most people know the Algarve as being one of the
most popular golf destinations in Europe, however it
has so much more to offer than just golf.
Algarve resident, Rachel Fieldhouse, who has owned
property in Praia da Luz since 2012 and has lived
there permanently since 2017 provides us with an
insight into the charms of this region.
“The Algarve coastline is absolutely stunning with
golden sculpted cliffs, caves and sea stacks to a
backdrop of azure blue/emerald green sea and deep
blue skies. There are many cliff walks and designated
boardwalks to enable you to enjoy the scenery. In
spring, the cliffs are adorned with a bright array of
flowers. The beauty of the scenery, together with the
wealth of cultural sights and activities mean that this
region is definitely worth visiting all year round.
Summer is hot, but there is usually a sea breeze
which helps to temper it. However, at this time of
year, it is wonderful being outdoors in the low 20s!
more interesting part. To the west of Praia da Luz,
we have Burgau (a lovely fishing village) which is an
hour and a quarter‘s walk across the cliffs with very
steep streets leading down to a charming bay, great
for surfers and even paddle boarders when the sea
is flat. The Beach Bar serves great food, including
fresh fish and a great place to watch the sun set or
the tide coming in. In the main season there are many
bars, restaurants, cafés and a hubbub of activity. It is
very quiet in the winter months. There is a sports club
(family run) just outside Burgau with much to offer
including tennis courts.
People who visit Praia da Luz return again and
again, as it has a unique charm. It has a beautiful
bay looking out to the black rock, (from bygone
volcanic days) with the colourful strata’d cliffs. There
are many restaurants and bars, some open all year. It
is really busy in the summer but has a life of its own
in winter too. The local population are very friendly
and welcoming.
This year we had no rain from April through to the end
of October. In the winter we can have lovely, sunny
warm days but in the evenings we light a fire. When
it rains, it doesn’t normally last long and the sun will
come out again very quickly. Sometimes we do get
day-long storms where the rain comes down like
stair-rods.
So where to visit on the Algarve? There is a useful
grid showing the main towns to visit, and how they
have been rated according to six main criteria on the
website www.algarve-tourist.com
Well Faro is the historical regional capital, and is
highly recommended for a day trip, plus it has the
only airport in the south. The waterfront town with its
yacht-filled harbour retains historical charm, all the
amenities of a large town and it has superb beaches.
In my opinion, the western Algarve is the prettiest and

favourite places. We often go walking along the
boardwalk across the dunes/wetlands. It changes
according to the time of year and tides, and is great
for observing nature. The wetlands are next to the
river estuary harbour with a river front lined with bars/
restaurants and cafes where you can admire the
boats and watch the fishermen returning with their
catch. The little moorish town leads down shop lined
steep cobble streets to the harbour front. Alvor is a
great place to stay for a weekend ... to enjoy a meal
overlooking the harbour at sunset.
Lagos Marina is
also a magnet with bars and
restaurants where you can watch the sun go down
over the boats and watch the world go by. Boat
trips to the caves along the coast as well as dolphinwatching
or fishing/sailing trips can be hired here
too. It has beautiful churches and other interesting
buildings, a Roman wall around the town, a fort,
and used to be the capital of Portugal. Urban art is
a big thing here with people from around the world
commissioned to adorn various buildings with their
art - very different to mindless graffiti!
A drive out to the west coast is a must. Here it is
surfers’ paradise with glorious beaches and rolling
waves. There are rough roads that take you through
the dunes along the cliffs with boardwalks to
viewpoints and places to park up to walk or to enjoy
the surf. Again it is stunning in spring with the wild
flowers, and is a natural park. A great area for bird
watching too especially at migration time.
Alvor is a fishing village with a pretty harbour
between Lagos and Portimao and is one of our
78
East of Lagos, there are also some lovely
seaside villages. Carvoeira is really quaint,
perched on the cliff, tumbling down steep
shop lined streets to a charming bay.
From here, you can go on cave trips with the
boats leaving and landing from the beach.
Quite an experience disembarking when there is a bit
of a swell! The boat is a great way to see the stunning
coastline with intriguing caves (including the famous
Benagil cave) and sea stacks. Paddle boarding
and kayaking are also a popular way to explore the
coastline and caves.
We don’t know Eastern Algarve that well, but we
have visited Tavira which is not far from the Spanish
border. It is a lovely place to stay for a couple of days
with charming things to see on both sides of the
river Gilao that runs through it. It is quite a trek to
the beaches on Tavira island and you need to take
a boat to get to them! Vilamoura is also a nice place
to stay because of the beautiful marina surrounded
by plentiful restaurants and bars and many golfers.”

WORLD’S MOST…
Widespread Vaccinations
By Louise Crawford
The words ‘vaccines’ and ‘vaccinations’ must surely be two
of the most popular keywords in Google searches currently
following recent news of successful trials of a number of Covid
19 potential vaccination candidates. See table below from the
WHO. In fact, there are currently more than 100 COVID-19
vaccine candidates under development, with a number of these
in the human trial phase.
But what about other vaccines that
are now administered globally?
Eradication is the ultimate goal of
vaccination against a disease, and
one disease that has been eradicated
as a result of vaccination is smallpox.
Here we focus on 10 deadly diseases
for which immunisation is available
and widespread in 2019. There are
23 available vaccines in total.
(Source: WHO)
80
1. The vaccine against the deadly three of diphtheria,
whooping cough (pertussis) and tetanus is known as
either the DTP3, DPT or DTP vaccine. 125 member
states had reached 90% coverage by 2019.
2. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) or TB is
transmitted by people infected with pulmonary (lung)
TB who release Mtb into the air through coughing,
sneezing or spitting. It is the world’s leading infectious
cause of death. BCG is the vaccine and coverage
reached 88%.
3. Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that can
cause irreversible paralysis. In 2019, 86% of infants
around the world received three doses of polio
vaccine. Targeted for global eradication, polio has
been stopped in all countries except for Afghanistan
and Pakistan.
4. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the
liver. This vaccine for infants had been introduced
nationwide in 189 Member States by the end of
2019. Global coverage with 3 doses of hepatitis B
vaccine is estimated at 85%.
5. Measles is a highly contagious disease resulting
in a high fever and rash, and can lead to blindness,
encephalitis or death. 85% of children had received
one dose of measles-containing vaccine by their
second birthday by the end of 2019.
6. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) causes
meningitis and pneumonia. Hib vaccine had been
introduced in 192 Member States by the end of 2019
and coverage is around 72%.
7. Rubella is a viral disease which is usually mild in
children, but infection during early pregnancy may
cause fetal death or congenital rubella syndrome,
which can lead to defects of the brain, heart, eyes,
and ears. Rubella vaccine was introduced nationwide
in 173 Member States by the end of 2019, and global
coverage was estimated at 71%.
8. Meningitis A is an infection that is often deadly
and leaves one in five affected individuals with longterm
devastating fall-out conditions. By the end of
2019 almost 350 million people in 24 out of the 26
countries in the meningitis belt had been vaccinated
with MenAfriVac through campaigns.
9. Mumps is a highly contagious virus that causes
painful swelling at the side of the face under the ears
(the parotid glands), fever, headache and muscle
aches. It can lead to viral meningitis. Mumps vaccine
had been introduced nationwide in 122 Member
States by the end of 2019.
10. Pneumococcal diseases include pneumonia,
meningitis and febrile bacteraemia, as well as otitis
media, sinusitis and bronchitis. Pneumococcal
vaccine had been introduced in 149 Member States
by the end of 2019, and global third dose coverage
was estimated at 48%.
