January 2021 Ashland Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 11SportsMADS Gymnastics Enjoys Unusual SeasonBy Christopher Tremblay,Staff Sports WriterWhile the Covid-19 pandemicstill wreaks havocamongst sports throughout thecountry, high schools are tryingto get their athletes onto their respectivefields so they can enjoysome semblance of a season.Local gymnastic teams havebeen given the option to participatein the reduced seasonin person or remotely. Ashlandhigh school which co-ops withMedfield and Dover-Sherbornto from MADS gymnastics, willbe taking part in their contestsin person.“This is going to be a seasonof unknowns; one in whichwe are taking it week by weekand day by day,” MADS CoachJennifer Libin said. “The meetsare determined by the localschools, luckily we will be participatingin the in-person meets.Some schools will be going remotewhere one school will goabout their events n their schoolwith a judge. The two scoreswill then be compared, and awinner decided.”Not actually knowinghow your opponent is doingon a specific event has got tobe tough. Libin is thankful thather squad will not have to dealwith the remote scoring. MADS,who takes part in the South, willhave six meets this winter seasona home and away against Norwood,Medway, Holliston, Millis(MHM) and Norton.Last winter, MADS finishedfifth in the South Sectionals witha score of 141.975, 4 points offthe top spot and a mere .0262points out of fourth place. Thesquad also had two girls finishin the top 10 of overall scoring.By finishing in fifth MADS wasedged out in earning a spot inthe State Tournament. Unfortunately,with the situation athand, sports will have somewhatof a season, but will not be ableto participate in any tournamentplay this year.“As of right now, it’s a go and… the season will start in earlyJanuary. There is no real contactin gymnastics so it will bepretty much the same as in thepast except that the girls will bewearing masks,” the Coach said.“We will have a small seasonwith no post-season, which is ahuge bummer for the girls but atleast we will be having some sortof a season instead of nothing.”According to Libin, COVID-19 is not really going to interferetoo much with the team havingsuccess, the only thing that willbother the girls is the inabilityto participate in tournamentplay. With MADS not really ina league, there is not championshipto fight for throughout theseason. The only thing they havegoing for them is the post-seasonand there will not be any of thatthis year.“There will be no light at theend of the tunnel this year,”Libin said. “The girls realizethat, and they are gratefuljust to be able to go out and participatein an organized event.”Despite the situation thegymnastic team had a ratherstrong signup this winter. Althoughthere will be a lot of newyoung new faces this winter, thecoach is very optimistic aboutthe future.The impending years willlook bright, but for the seniors,who have had so much successover the past few years it willbe a tough way to end hie highschool careers.Senior captains Merritt Sullivan(Dover-Sherborn) and EllaPezzullo (Medfield) will closeout their abbreviated seasonwith MADS this winter whilelooking to keep the youngergirls focused and prepared forthe years to come. Sullivan finishedin second place at lastyear’s State Tournament on thebeam and will look to help theyounger squad with her strongcompetitive natures.Pezzullo will work her routineson the vault and floor,but what’s more important tothe team is her cheerleading. Accordingto the Coach, Pezzullois one of the loudest girls on thesquad and installs a breath offresh air to the rest of the team.In addition to the two seniorcaptains, MADS is primarilyunderclassmen, five sophomoresand seven freshman, most ofwhom bring a lot of talent tothe mats and equipment.DS sophomore Kelsey Chiu,who broke her back last yearand was forced to miss the entireregular season before comingback around the Sectionals, isready to get back to work. Chiuis a four-event athlete with floorbeing her best and althoughshe was not able to participatelast season, she still managed tomake each and every practiceand event cheering her team on.“Kelsey was there all the timealthough she really didn’t haveto be with all her school workand physical therapy, she prioritizedher life so that she couldbe their to support her teammates,”Libin said. “That reallysays a lot about her character;she’s one of those kids thatteammates and coaches wanton their team. She cares for herteammates and wants to supportteam in any way she can.”Two girls the Coach has yet to seeare Medfield sophomore GraceVuzgo and Ashland freshmanElizabeth Forester. Vuzgo’s oldersister Hannah was part of theteam last year and is hoping theyounger sibling is just as good.As for Forester, the coach is excitedto see what the firsttimevarsity gymnast can bringto the team.The MADS Coach considersMedfield junior Marina Linnertto be the team’s Unsung Hero.During her first season on thesquad last year Linnert managedto put up scores high enough tocount in the teams scoring. Althoughnot the highest score, shealways brought a very solid performanceto whatever event shewas asked to ta part in.“I could use her anywhere,often in all four events, as shewas a very versatile individual,”the Coach said. “She was onewho could role with the puncheseven if I told her what event shewas doing right before the meetstarted.”Libin is looking to use thisshortened season as a steppingstone to the future with all theyounger gymnasts.
