Acknowledgments

With a project like this, it is essential to have good friends and fellow collectors help make it successful. We were blessed to

have many such contacts all over the world, and all were willing to contribute to this book.

We don’t give simply list credits for style points, the help of the following people was actually crucial to our work. A special

thank you goes to AsVee Design for providing such great artwork for each country.

Listed by first name, those good friends are:

Bruno Pause (Italy)

Chris Giles (United Kingdom)

Felix Gübeli (Swiss)

George Cooper (Australia)

John Saulovich (USA)

Josef Ehrler (Swiss)

Ric Davis (USA)

Tom Thalau (Germany)

Thanks to all!

It was a pleasure to work with each one of you.

Foreword

I clearly remember the moment when I first stumbled upon some Elvis Presley records made in Taiwan.

It was at a record fair in the early ‘90s. No one seemed to be interested in them because it was already late in the day, and they were still

sitting unsold. My immediate reaction was to get all of them out of the bin as soon as possible and ask the dealer to offer me a good price,

which he did.

Without even taking a closer look at the records, and afraid the dealer would change his mind, I got the hell out of there.

That was the moment that my passion for Asian vinyl releases on Elvis Presley was born.

Soon it became clear that, with all the different pressings and variations, these records must have been made in very small quantities. It

was harder to find exactly the original release than a newer, different pressing.

Years later, when doing research on Asian vinyl for Bootleg Elvis, I contacted Ferry van der Werf, a Dutch Presley collector and dealer that I

knew from the Utrecht record fair in the Netherlands. He was the only expert on Asian vinyl that I knew of, and we had some great conversations.

In early 2020, while sharing a cup of coffee, we talked about the fact that a collector’s guide on Elvis’ Asian vinyl had never been

published. We’d never even seen a small booklet about it, and we wondered why such a gap existed.

Since neither of us was “all talk and no action,” we suddenly looked at each other and said: “Let’s do it!”

Ferry has a lot of experience on the subject, having travelled to Asia numerous times to hunt for rare Presley records. He knows practically

every dealer, producer and record shop on the continent. We both have a very decent collection of Elvis vinyl from Asia, and Ferry’s collection

of non-Elvis vinyl from Asia is second to none. We soon started scanning hundreds of records from our collections, and I contacted

fellow Elvis collectors to help us with this adventure by sharing information and scans from their archives.

Very soon we found out that we had run right into a wasp’s nest of countless titles, flying in from everywhere. We could never tell this epic

story in just a single volume. So we decided to limit our coverage to 10” and 12” records from six major Asian countries: Hong Kong, Malaysia,

Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Other countries and formats will just have to wait for Volume 2, and perhaps even a Volume 3!

Furthermore, we decided that transcribing all the tracks or artist names for each piece of vinyl was unproductive.

Instead, we present cover images and label scans large enough for you to read them right off the page. And that’s exactly what you should

do! Enjoy the many mistakes on said covers and labels, they are sometimes hilarious and often tell a lot about how and why these records

were made. And such things will also be explained throughout the book.

What you now hold in your hands is the result of many years of collecting and hunting, and many hours of work.

It is our hope that you’ll relish and use it for many years to come.

now, dive into the colorful magic of elvis presley’s asian vinyl releases...
