Dike-New Hartford Middle School— Fall 2020

Navigating School During a Pandemic

By Anthony Bering

COVID-19 is a very contagious virus but DNH is doing our best to keep

it at bay. Masks, face shields and gators can help. Face masks, when

worn consistently and correctly, helps slow the spread of COVID. Also,

proper use of face masks can result in you having a lower risk of

getting COVID or spreading it. How masks help: they filter out the air

and the almost microscopic water droplets in your breath, called

aerosols, that transport the virus. Please wear your mask properly,

over the nose and mouth, to help protect the students, teachers, and

their families. Let’s keep everyone safe so we can stay in school.

Homecoming 2020

By Josey Syhlman

This year’s homecoming theme was “

Victory is Sweet.” And it was as the DNH

Wolverines took home a victory against the

Hudson Pirates! DNH won their

homecoming game 48-6! Of course, Covid

restrictions prevented us from having a big pep-rally indoors, but the

cheerleaders still put on an amazing pep-rally on the football field for all

DNH students to watch live. Next, this year for dress-up days we had tiedye

day, pajama day, twin day, beach

day, and spirit day. The high school

marching band also came over from

Dike to raise school sprit. They

marched on the street playing the

DNH fight song. Finally, Mrs.

Eiklenborg’s Wolverine time group won the door decorating contest.

Their door was really “sweet”! Good job to the football players and

cheerleaders this homecoming! Victory is sweet!

Blue and White!

By Noah Niedert

Laura Eiklenborg is the DNH middle school cheer coach. She had

27 cheerleaders out for football cheer. She started coaching

cheerleading

because when she

first started there

were only 2

cheerleaders out,

and she wanted to

make them more

confident and she

hopes she did. She thinks cheerleaders make the

atmosphere at the games better and more fun. She says

her cheerleaders have worked very hard and thinks they

have improved a lot from the start of the season. To end

the season, they had an excellent performance at a home

football game and the pep assembly which featured dancing and stunting.

Fantastic Football

By Jacen Wenger

This year the football program had to deal

with Covid 19 restrictions, but the team pushed

through it to play the sport that they enjoy. Each

player worked extremely hard throughout the

season to be ready for the games ahead. Mr.

Pokorny is the head coach for the team and was

interviewed before the game in Denver he said, “I

would say that the season started out rough but

mid-season we started getting it together and I

think we will finish the season off strong. We

definitely have some growth but got better at some aspects of the game and have a long way to go

to reach our long-term goals. Both teams are summing up to my expectations and I expect that both

teams will win against Denver.” Both teams definitely finished the season off strong with the 7th

grade going 2/4 and the 8th grade is 5/1. Other people who

coached were Mr. Huck, Mr. Mapel, and Mr. Wright. Managers

on the team were William Huck, Alex Jones, and Jacen Wenger,

who also filmed the games for the team. Devlin Davis, the 7th

grade running back, broke his arm during the first game of the

year against Hudson. Thankfully he is recovered well. The

football team had a great year and hope to have an even better

one next year with the new coming 7th graders.

Cross Country

By Faith Gray

Dike New-Hartford Junior High Cross Country

had 27 people out, 17 girls and 10 boys. And the coach

was Ms. Cheeseman. They ran at six meets: Waverly,

Denver, Grundy, Jesup, Dike, and Conference at Denver.

Meets varying between 1 mile to 2 and a half miles.

Some of the least favorite parts and hardest parts were,

when it would get really hot or really cold. Cross

country is lots of work. Meets can be really stressful and

there are a lot of teams there. Sometimes you have to run in the wind and learning how to breathe

in the wind is something you have to do. One of the big

things you have to learn is how to push through the pain

and keep going; pushing through when you have no gas

left in the tank, and

running the chasers.

Another hard part is time

management, especially

when participating in

sports and other activities.

Some of the favorite parts

were getting to run to

Casey’s, making memories

with friends, the adrenaline rush you have before a race, and the

satisfaction once the race is over. The best is when you cut time and

you know you got better at something you worked hard for! Great

season runners!

Bump. Set. Spike.

The 7th and 8th-grade girls

had a great season this fall! With a

total of 33 girls going out. Their

coaches Mrs. Hulme and Ms.

Cuvelier said the girls improved a lot

with serving, passing, and many

more things. As Ms. Cuvelier said,

“We had a couple of games this year

that were really good learning opportunities. The girls were able to view those

opportunities as a chance to grow.” The 7th graders got to play 12 dates while

the 8th graders 13. The two amazing coaches helped their girls improve and

play their best in volleyball.

The Tea on Ms. C

By Daniel Merrill

Ms. Cuvelier is a new teacher at New-Hartford this year.

She is 26 years old and went to college at the University of

Northern Iowa. At her time learning at UNI, she was a student

teacher here in the Dike-New Hartford school district, and at

Hudson. Ever since Ms. Cuvelier was young, she wanted to be a

teacher. In junior high and high school she played volleyball,

cross country, basketball, track, and softball. The main reason Ms.

Cuvelier wanted to be a teacher was because she likes teaching

very much and enjoys her time at the school. She specifically

chose New Hartford because that is where her parents taught and

it’s the place where she grew up. Both of her parents have been

coaches and teachers and she loved to see the difference they

made. Today, she works in the same building as her father and

says that it’s nice to work with family because it’s important and

now, she can see him in action as a teacher.

Welcome Ms. Cuvelier!

More Tea on a Mrs. C

By Noah Niedert

Mrs. Cordes is a new teacher at DNH. This is her firstyear

as a teacher. She teaches special ed for middle

school. Before Mrs. Cordes taught at DNH, she was an

associate. She said she likes it here at DNH. Mrs. Cordes

lives in Aplington with her husband and two kids. Her

oldest is 3 years old and her youngest is 1 year old. In

her free time, she enjoys spending free time with her

family on her farm.

Welcome Mrs. Cordes! We are glad you are a

Wolverine!

Seth Beasley is a new 7 th grade student at DNH. In his free time, he likes to

Seth said he likes his new teachers. He says they're a lot like his old ones in Arkansas.

Seth has some new friends and met back up with old friends, which include Gabe

Bordeaux, Bryson Grider, and, his cousin, Noah Niedert. He finds what he’s learning in math

interesting. His friends describe him as energetic and happy all the time. Welcome back Seth!

Jalen Haugen is a new student at DNH. He has one sibling who is also a

new student at DNH, Jullian. He has made many friends including Ethan

Osterhaus, Trey Haak, Noah Stockdale, and Jaiden Soppe. I later asked Jalen how

it was going so far in the school and he replied, “It’s going pretty good so far and I

like all the teachers so far.” Jalen’s previous school that he went to was South

Dale. He says there really isn’t anything interesting he has learned about in his

classes, but he says he would like to learn all the football plays. Jalen also went on to mention that

he enjoys playing Call of Duty and used to play for Excel, a basketball team.

Winter Sports Season

After a rough start, the DNH JH

has started their winter sports season.

After only a week of practice, junior high

sports were suspended due to Covid

restrictions. Luckily, they were able to

resume after a couple weeks and have

gotten off to a good start. The girls

basketball teams have had 2 games each

at home while the boys had their 2

games away. Win or lose all were great

games and they learned a lot. The

wrestlers had their first meet at GR with

many successes. The cheerleaders

cheered at the home games and did an awesome job. The seasons will get into full swing in

January with a very busy month. Come out to see the JH Wolverines in action!
