INGLEWOOD — The 

Inglewood Unified School 

District is to make an official 

request for an emergency loan 

from the state and a short-term 

loan from the county or face the 

prospect of being unable to meet 

its financial obligations by the 

end of May. 

The move was signaled 

Wednesday night with a resolution 

on the IUSD board agenda 

asking officials to approve 

“an emergency apportionment” 

from the California Board 

of Education and a request 

that the Los Angeles County 

Superintendent of Schools and 

the Board of Supervisors assist 

in obtaining short-term funds to 

cover IUSD’s obligations until 

the “emergency apportionment 

can be assessed.” 

Melvin Iizuka, the county 

education department’s director 

of business advisory services, 

explained that the move had possibly 

been on the cards and was a 

“precautionary” development.

Center, a Leimert Park fixture 

and popular gathering place 

operated for at least a decade by 

twin brothers Ron and Richard 

Harris, has been forced to leave 

its location in L.A.’s Black arts 

district. 

More than seven years after 

it relocated from across the 

street to the corner of Degnan 

Boulevard and 43rd Street, 

the Harris brothers have found 

themselves evicted following a 

dispute with their landlord. In 

this case, it is Fred and Virginia 

Calloway, who also own the 

Regency West entertainment 

venue next door. 

Since the news broke, there 

have been a swirl of rumors 

about the abrupt closure. The 

Wave contacted the Harrises 

and arranged to speak to them 

Saturday at a second Lucy 

Florence location on West Pico 

Boulevard. In that conversation, 

they voiced displeasure 

with a 2004 story about a previous 

dispute with another 

landlord, and declined to speak 

on the record without various 

assurances from the paper’s top 

executives. 

However, in an open letter 

to supporters — entitled “Lucy 

Florence Lockout: Business or 

Personal?”— they thanked the 

community for its continued 

support, and asserted that “it is 

not true that we have not paid 

rent to the landlords, Fred and 

Virginia Calloway.” In it, they 

claimed to have overpaid the 

landlord by more than $10,000, 

and went on to detail a series 

of dealings with Calloway 

that they say ended when the 

landlord “refused to accept our 

final payment and has chosen, 

instead, to lock us out of 

the building and to evict Lucy 

Florence from his building in 

Leimert Park.” 

On Tuesday, the Calloways’ 

son, Tony Calloway, said 

that his father is currently 

abroad in Thailand. “My par-

In a tough neighborhood, offi cer leads others to make a difference 

Usually, the general public 

is unaware of the 

achievements, contributions 

and overall awesomeness of 

an African-American LAPD cop 

until he dies. But comes now one 

that is still alive and making a difference 

in the streets and whom 

you simply must meet: Senior 

Lead Officer Deon Joseph, the 

top cop of Skid Row. 

Joseph delivers law and order 

and social services within the 

rehabilitative portion of Skid 

Row and by all accounts — residents’, 

business owners’ and fellow 

officers’ — he is The Man. 

A native of Los Angeles who 

grew up in Harbor City, Joseph 

has been an LAPD officer for 

15 years, has spent 13 of those 

years working on Skid Row and 

the last six years serving as lead 

officer there. Joseph, 38, and his 

wife, Santosha, have three sons:

And Joseph has an identical twin 

brother, named Cleon, who is also 

an LAPD officer. Fellow members 

of the force remark that the 

two are sometimes seen “walking 

around together, looking like each

Deon Joseph is so good at 

what he does that in 2007, Parade 

magazine and the International 

Association of Chiefs of Police 

declared him to be one of the top 

10 police officers in the nation. 

This illustrious lawman came to 

my attention the other day when 

the Central Cities Association 

honored him at its 17th annual 

Treasures of Los Angeles Awards

COMPTON — Locked in a 

tight runoff campaign with challenger 

Janna Zurita, Compton 

City Councilwoman Barbara 

Calhoun is anything but modest 

when asked to handicap her 

prospects in the city’s June 7 

general municipal election. 

And don’t dare use the word 

“if” — because “it’s not ‘if,’ it’s 

‘when’ I win,” said Calhoun in 

an interview on Monday afternoon. 

This assurance, she said, comes 

from having her ears to the street 

and being involved in the community. 

And it might not hurt 

that she has defeated the Zurita 

family in previous elections: 

In 2003, Calhoun unseated her 

current opponent’s mother, former 

city councilwoman Delores 

Zurita; four years later, she won 

re-election, with 55 percent of 

the vote, by defeating current 

Compton Unified School District 

Board member Satra Zurita — 

her newest challenger’s sister. 

For her part, Janna Zurita is 

equally confident. “I’m in a runoff,” 

she said. “You just have to 

give credit where credit is due. 

Obviously something I am doing 

must be working.” 

She is encouraged, Zurita said, 

by the results of the April 19 

primary election, in which she 

claimed 615 votes to Calhoun’s 

1,305. The figures included ballots 

cast in the precincts, voteby-mail 

and provisional ballots. 

Though Zurita placed second in 

that race, she is confident that 

her numbers will grow when voters 

cast their ballots next month. 

“Over 60 percent of the voters, 

voted for change,” Zurita said, 

taking into account the votes cast 

for the other candidates — Lynn 

Boone, Robin Bradley, Jasper 

Jackson, Francisco Rodriguez 

and Otha Ray Scott. “So now 

that it is just the two of us in the 

race, I believe that they will support 

me.” 

Calhoun has faced criticism 

in recent years over the voting 

bloc she formed with Mayor Eric 

Perrodin, but those political ties 

have been frayed. Last month, 

she broke ranks with the mayor 

on one of the city’s most contentious 

issues: his long-held desire 

to re-establish the Compton 

Police Department. The councilwoman 

said she does not know 

whether the decision helped 

or hurt her election prospects, 

but insisted that she is eager to 

move forward with projects and 

programs near and dear to her 

heart. One of them is the annual 

Homeless Veteran Stand Down, 

a three-day event where homeless 

veterans can receive free 

services — dental and eye care 

and substance abuse aid — food, 

clothing and recreational activities. 

Additionally, Calhoun said 

she is working to lure sit-down 

restaurants and high-end businesses 

to a downtown area that 

is now home to a fairly new 

shopping center and public art 

installations. 

Calhoun said her commitment 

to Compton can also be seen 

in recent moves to improve the 

lives of local residents. One that 

she points to is her spearheading 

of a local “ban the box” ini-

Blotting out crime, one call at a time 

Two held in string of shotgun robberies 

Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with a series 

of armed robberies in the Koreatown, Harvard Heights and West Adams 

areas, but a police captain said detectives have not linked the 

hold-ups to the slaying of an MTV music coordinator. 

Late Wednesday morning, offi cers swarmed a parking lot in the 

area of Washington Boulevard and Tenth Avenue and took two people 

into custody at gunpoint. They also impounded a light blue sedan 

that appeared to match the general description of a vehicle used in 

the crimes. 

By late afternoon, one of the suspects who had been detained was 

arrested, and information he provided led them to a second suspect, 

police said. The names of the suspects were not immediately released. 

Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Matt Blake said police believed 

the same suspects may have been involved in as many as nine 

robberies that occurred in the area beginning April 29. The robberies 

included at least one instance in which a victim fought back, prompting 

one of the suspects to open fi re, Blake said. The victim was not 

injured. 

Blake insisted, however, that police have not connected the robberies 

to Sunday’s slaying of MTV music coordinator Gabriel Aron 

Ben-Meir in the mid-Wilshire area. Blake also noted that a person 

was killed by a shotgun blast in the area on April 30 during an apparent 

attempted robbery. 

“When he (the victim) didn’t give up his property, he (the suspect) 

turned the shotgun on him, and he is deceased,” Blake said. 

Blake said the robbery suspects also had not been linked to that 

killing, although he conceded there were similarities in the crimes 

and that “shotguns are kind of a rare weapon to be used in a street 

crime.” 

The search for suspects in the robberies had prompted a tactical 

alert for Los Angeles police offi cers early this morning. Offi cers had 

been looking for two Black men in their late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet 9 

inches tall, with an average build and dark clothing. Victims said one 

of the suspects was armed with a rifl e or shotgun. The suspects were 

driving a silver or blue American-model sedan. 

In one of the robberies, the suspect was described as having a duffel 

bag with a rifl e or shotgun inside. 

The most recent robberies included on that occurred at about 6:15 

p.m. Tuesday near Eighth Street and Normandie Avenue, Los Angeles 

police Detective John Skaggs of the Olympic Station said. 

In a second robbery, the suspects approached a pedestrian on the 

street about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday near Sycamore Avenue and Westhaven 

Street, Skaggs said. 

In a third robbery, a pedestrian was robbed about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday 

in the 1800 block of South Oxford Avenue, near Washington 

Boulevard, Skaggs said. 

Victims of all three robberies had the same description of the suspects, 

Skaggs said. 

Public assistance program puts 

focus on healthier food choices

A little more than half of 

county residents who qualify for 

the federally funded supplemental 

food benefit, formerly known 

as food stamps, take advantage 

of the program, according to the 

county Department of Public 

Social Services. 

Marking May as CalFresh 

Awareness Month, the department 

is joining with the U.S. 

Department of Agriculture, the 

California Department of Social 

Services and more than 25 community 

partners to get the word 

out to the public. 

They will be scouring community 

centers, recreational centers, 

worksource centers, senior 

centers, Social Security offices, 

schools, churches, faith-based 

organizations, food banks, food 

pantries and farmers markets in 

order to reach those who are eligible 

for the program, but either 

do not know it or are hesitant to 

apply due to a lingering stigma. 

“These are places that we 

know are important gathering 

points where we can do outreach,” 

said Bill Taylor, director 

of intergovernmental relations 

for the county Department of 

Public Social Services. “There 

is a misconception that food 

stamps signify a certain kind 

of person. But we know that by 

looking at our data that a lot of 

people who receive CalFresh 

benefits are employed or underemployed.” 

Yet, they are not the only ones 

in need, Taylor added, noting 

that senior citizens, immigrants 

and the homeless also rely on 

the program. 

The food stamp program 

became CalFresh last year in 

an effort to encourage healthy 

food options. Instead of the old 

food stamp coupons, recipients 

are now issued electronic debit 

cards that can be swiped at most 

grocery stores and food marts 

when purchases are made. 

The Department of Public 

Social Services is using mobile 

vans to enroll qualified people 

into the program at various 

farmers markets and other places 

within the next month. 

“That helps with the stigma 

or the way they may feel if they 

have to walk into one of our 

offices and wait in line,” said 

a CalFresh representative. “We 

are doing whatever we can to 

make the program convenient.”

program for drug and alcohol 

treatment,” Kristen 

Foster said. “Whitney voluntarily 

entered the program 

to support her long-standing 

recovery process.” 

No details about the treatment, 

or what led to the 

singer’s decision to start it,

jobs or have had to go part-time, 

instead of full-time,” Browning 

said. “We have added around 

400,000 new individuals to the 

program but estimates show 

that there are hundreds of thousands 

of individuals still in Los 

Angeles County who are eligible.”

“It was mentioned in our letter 

[last year] when the county took 

over fiscal oversight,” he said. 

“It’s a very long process and if 

you wait until the last minute it 

could be too late. [But] it can be 

stopped or revoked.” 

Iizuka said that the county had 

authorized the district to borrow 

some of their construction funds 

and use other funds to meet its 

May payroll. “There is some 

money coming from the state 

that normally comes in July,” he 

said, “but will be paid in June 

and that and the other borrowing 

will be paid back to the state.” 

The Wave went to press before 

the vote was taken, but had 

reported previously that district 

officials had floated the possibility 

of securing up to $20 million 

in loans that could be brokered 

through — but not provided by 

— the county. 

According to a background 

brief on the agenda item, the 

district is facing deficit spending 

for 2010-11, 2011-12 and 

2012-13 — and despite a budget 

reduction plan that slashed $7 

million in 2010-11 spending and 

$21 million in 2011-12, there is 

still a deficit of over $1 million 

in 2010-11 and $10 million in 

2011-12. 

“The District is scheduled to 

run out of cash in May and will 

only be able to survive through 

receiving income that has been 

deferred, additional expenditure 

reductions or inter-fund borrowing,” 

it says. 

The resolution, according to 

the agenda, was prepared by the 

office of Superintendent Gary 

McHenry, but a reporter was 

advised that McHenry was in a 

meeting when called for a comment. 

The Wave also left messages 

Tuesday night and Wednesday 

morning for Eric Hall, the fiscal 

adviser appointed last November 

by the Los Angeles County 

Office of Education to overlook 

the District’s financial matters. 

Reached by phone on 

Wednesday, board member 

Trina Williams said she hadn’t 

had a chance to look at her 

agenda packet, but confirmed 

that the loan request was part of 

the budget recovery plan and the 

resolution marked a process that 

“needed to start now.” 

“It’s a six-month process and 

there’s a probability that we 

might need it … but it’s not a 

definite,” she said. 

Speaking for herself, Williams 

projected that the district would 

survive without needing state 

funds and made a public plea 

to the teachers union to re-open 

negotiations on labor agreements 

struck last year. 

Added Williams: “We have 

been doing pretty good with the 

reductions we’ve made. My personal 

belief is that we won’t 

need the state loan. In fact, I 

really believe that if the teachers 

would be willing to offer to 

re-open negotiations in terms of 

furlough days, health benefits ... 

you know the stuff that impacts 

us all ... I really believe that 

would be a big help to us. 

“[But] they have been firm in 

not wanting to do that and it’s 

not fair ... everyone has pitched 

in something to the budget or 

given something up to try to put 

money back into our general 

fund and I just don’t see why 

the teachers union is so dead set 

against it.” 

Williams said district personnel 

have been asking the teachers 

to come back to the table, but 

had been met with a firm no. 

“The question is why; you 

should ask the teachers why that 

is,” Williams told a reporter. 

A call to Peter Somberg, president 

of the Inglewood Teachers 

Association, was not returned 

at press time. Meanwhile, 

Ronald Johnson, the chair of 

the California Professional 

Employees Local Union No. 

2345, which represents 650 classified 

employees in the district, 

was hopeful for a solution. 

The drastic budget cuts have 

affected classified employees 

the most with Wednesday night’s 

agenda calling for another 25 

job losses and up to 20 furlough 

days. 

“I just hope they succeed in 

getting the loans,” Johnson said. 

“People are in all sorts of difficulty 

and need to pay their 

bills.”

Thousands of guns 

removed from streets 

in annual buy-back

The city took control of more 

than 2,000 firearms during 

its annual gun buy-back program 

over the weekend, Mayor 

Antonio Villaraigosa announced 

Monday. 

The event, held Saturday at a 

half-dozen locations across the 

city, yielded 91 assault weapons, 

the largest cache of that 

most dangerous weapon in the 

program’s history, though the 

overall take was lower than last 

year, according to city officials. 

The buy-back haul was 953 

handguns, 688 rifles and 330 

shotguns in addition to the 

assault weapons, along with one 

anti-tank rocket launcher recovered 

in South Los Angeles. 

“People are tired of the gun 

violence. They’re tired of seeing 

the kind of carnage that’s left 

behind when assault weapons 

like these are used to maim and 

kill,” Villaraigosa said. 

Individuals are assured anonymity 

when turning in weapons, 

which could eliminate 

potentially valuable ballistics 

evidence that might solve past 

crimes, but the city is able to 

prevent future crimes or accidental 

shootings by taking guns 

off the street, according to program 

supporters. 

About $175,000 in Ralphs 

supermarket gift cards were 

given out in exchange for the 

guns. About $25,000 worth of 

cards were left over. 

“Make no mistake about it, 

L.A. is safer than its been in 

decades, but still we suffer from 

gun violence far too frequently,” 

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said. 

“I went to bed last night at about 

11 p.m., got up about 6 a.m., and 

in just that short seven hours, 

three Angelenos were wounded 

by gunfire. ... That’s not unusu- 

al.” 

With this year’s gun buy-back 

program, “We made a statement 

that this is not a city that is ruled 

by the gun,” Beck said. “This is 

a city that is ruled by law, ruled 

by thinking people, ruled by 

community.” 

The number of guns obtained 

was down from last year’s event, 

which took in more than 2,500 

firearms, but was up from 2009, 

when 1,700 guns were handed 

over to the LAPD. 

Villaraigosa attributed the 

decline in gun buy-backs to the 

success of the program in past 

years and an earlier start time. 

The mayor used the announcement 

to mark the launch of his 

summer violence reduction 

efforts, and to advocate for the 

expansion of his Summer Night 

Lights program. Villaraigosa 

said he wants to expand the 

program, which keeps parks in 

violent neighborhoods open late, 

from 24 to 32 sites. 

Beck said the city will run 

background checks to make sure 

none of the turned-in guns are 

stolen. The vast majority will 

ultimately be melted down. In 

past years, the melted guns have 

been used for art pieces and for 

construction rebar, and officials 

said that will likely be the case 

this year. 

The Gun Owners of California 

called the program a “feel-good” 

exercise, but ineffective. 

“The fact of the matter is they 

don’t do anything to make the 

streets safer,” said Sam Paredes, 

executive director of Gun 

Owners of California. 

Paredes said it is good that the 

LAPD checks the guns against 

a database of stolen weapons, 

“but most of the guns turned 

in are absolute junk. Many are 

inoperable.”

A three-year prison term was 

handed down Monday for a man 

who manufactured anabolic steroids 

in Compton — at one of 

the largest underground steroid 

labs ever discovered in the United 

States — and distributed the compound 

on the Internet. 

Warren Abramson, 33, who at 

the time of his arrest last September 

was living in Las Vegas, pleaded 

guilty in January to one count 

each of possession with intent 

to distribute anabolic steroids 

and maintaining a drug-involved 

premises, and three counts of possessing 

unregistered silencers. 

When law enforcement officials 

executed a search warrant in 2007 

at Abramson’s home in Compton, 

they discovered the clandestine 

lab and made one of the largest 

steroid seizures in history, according 

to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. 

In total, investigators recovered 

nearly 6 1/2 kilograms of anabolic 

steroids, which translates 

to more than a quarter million 

steroid doses, as well as vials and 

other packaging material for distributing 

the steroids, according to 

authorities. 

“Steroid traffickers manufacture 

their drugs in very unsanitary 

conditions,” said U.S. Drug 

Enforcement Administration 

Special Agent in Charge Timothy 

J. Landrum. 

“As a result of the dangerous 

conditions surrounding these 

types of labs, young children can 

be exposed to large amounts of 

chemicals that are detrimental to 

their health and well being,” he 

said. “Through the joint efforts 

of local, state and federal law 

enforcement, this drug trafficker 

will no longer be able to prey on 

our communities and damage the 

youth of America.” 

Abramson was indicted by a 

Los Angeles federal grand jury 

last June. He was arrested in Las 

Vegas Sept. 17 by agents with 

the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, 

Firearms and Explosives as he 

attempted to purchase firearms, 

according to the U.S. Attorney’s 

Office. 

According to court documents, 

a multi-agency task force executed 

search warrants that led to the 

discovery of the steroid lab, as 

well as numerous firearms, three 

silencers and thousands of rounds 

of ammunition. 

$1 million 

wasted 

on cell 

phones

per year on nearly 12,000 

city-owned cell phones, City 

Controller Wendy Greuel said 

Wednesday. 

Greuel’s audit of seven city 

departments found that the city 

failed to have any central oversight 

of cell phone contracts, and 

that no one department is responsible 

for ensuring city policies 

are followed. 

Twenty percent of all staffers 

in non-revenue-generating 

departments have a cell phone, 

and the annual cost comes to 

about $4.8 million, according to 

Greuel.

was no comprehensive list of

She will join Inglewood Police

of 23 women police chiefs who 

head municipal police departments

she will also become the fourth 

female police chief serving in 

Los Angeles County. 

Irvine, who began her career 

as a police cadet in 1982, rose 

through the ranks becoming a 

sergeant in 1994 and was promoted 

to lieutenant three years 

later. 

She holds a Bachelor of 

Science degree in Business 

Management from the University 

of Redlands and a Master of 

Business Administration from the 

University of LaVerne. 

“Captain Irvine will make an 

excellent chief of police for the 

City of Manhattan Beach,” said 

Seabrooks. “We are proud to 

have been part of Captain Irvine’s

To compete 

on a global scale, 

our kids require 

year-round education

As a nation, either our 

kids are getting dumber 

or everyone else’s are 

getting smarter. American 15year-olds 

ranked 14th in reading, 

17th in science and 25th in 

math in a study of students in 34 

nations and nonnational regions. 

The Program for International 

Student Assessment study, coordinated 

every three years by 

the Organization for Economic 

Cooperation and Development, 

definitively shows U.S. students 

are no longer ready to compete 

against the world’s brightest. 

Which brings me to 

this: Why are we still giving 

them the summer off? 

As it stands, only eight of 

the Organization for Economic 

Cooperation and Development 

countries that took part in the 

study in 2009 have a lower high 

school graduation rate than we 

do. It’s so bad in some schools, 

educators have a nickname 

for them: dropout factories. 

That’s a national crisis with a 

potential for significant economic 

impact. The organization estimates 

that by boosting our scores 

for reading, math and science by 

25 points over the next 20 years, 

the United States would gain 

$41 trillion over the lifetime of 

the generation born in 2010. As 

cash-strapped as we are, can we 

really afford to leave that kind 

of money on the table? Instead 

of year-round school as curiosity, 

I think it’s time it becomes a 

government-enforced standard. 

Remember recently when 

the nation got all in a tizzy 

after the International Monetary 

Fund reported China would 

pass us as the world’s largest 

economy in 2016? Well, considering 

Shanghai ranked No. 

1 in the education report, that 

shouldn’t really surprise anyone. 

To make matters worse, our 

kids have no idea just how 

far behind they really are. 

When the results of the test 

were released in the winter, 

Arne Duncan, U.S. Department 

of Education secretary, pointed 

out that despite not being in the 

top of any of the subjects tested, 

“U.S. students express more 

self-confidence in their academic 

skills than students in virtually 

all OECD nations. This stunning 

finding may be explained 

because students here are being 

commended for work that would 

not be acceptable in high-performing 

education systems.” 

It’s as if the United States 

were cast in one of those clich 

Hollywood movies as the 

29-year-old dumb and balding 

jock who still wears his 

high school varsity jacket. 

Cutting into summer vacation 

won’t solve all our education 

problems — most research 

points toward the quality of the 

teacher as the biggest influencer 

— but more class time could 

help. At 180 days, we have one 

of the shortest school years 

of the countries tested. South 

Korea, for example, has 220 

school days, and a No. 2 ranking 

in math. Finland is first in 

math and science at 190 days. 

Then there’s this: Harris 

Cooper, a summer-learning 

expert at Duke University, pored 

over a century’s worth of data 

and found that each summer, 

our kids lose about a month 

of progress in math and that 

low-income students lose as 

much as three months’ worth 

of reading comprehension. 

Again, that’s each summer. 

More than a month of teaching 

time at the beginning of the 

school year is spent re-teaching 

the stuff our kids forgot 

over the break. This may be one 

of the reasons why the report 

suggests Finnish 15-year-olds 

are one to two years ahead of 

our kids in math and science. 

Now I hear the cry from some 

who say “Let our kids be kids,” 

but what does that mean today? 

The reason for summer vacations 

in the first place was that 

little Johnny was needed in the 

fields to help the family during 

growing season. Today more 

people live in cities than they do 

in rural areas, and that farming 

structure has been obsolete for 

some time. If our kids aren’t 

working on the farm all summer 

long, what are they doing? 

Wa t c h i n g T V ? 

Playing video games? 

Getting into trouble? 

Heck, a lot of our kids’ 

summers and holiday breaks 

are already structured around 

Amateur Athletic Union practices 

and tournaments. Why is 

it so wrong to suggest structuring 

the summer around more 

education, especially when the 

amount students receive is no 

longer enough to keep them 

competitive on the world stage? 

In July 2008, then-Sen. 

Obama suggested American 

children should learn a second 

language. That was met with 

a great deal of criticism, as if 

being bilingual and more educated 

was somehow un-American. 

You want to know 

what’s un-American? 

Not being innovative. 

Refusing to think outside the box. 

We used to be a nation of 

entrepreneurs and trailblazers, 

but now we’re just dogmatic 

consumers. We want problems 

to be fixed but we don’t want 

the solution to be an inconvenience. 

So we look for silver 

bullets, which in our culture usually 

means tossing more money 

at things. But guess what? We 

spend on average about $30,000 

more per student than the other 

Organization for Economic 

Cooperation and Development 

countries, yet the best we 

can do is middle of the road. 

Since when did chanting 

“We’re No. 25!” 

become acceptable? 

Today, if you want to keep your 

child in a learning environment 

during the summer, you most 

likely have to pony up hundreds, 

if not thousands, of dollars to 

enroll them in a program or two. 

Families who can’t afford to do 

that depend on scholarships or 

programs funded by government 

grants or corporations. If you 

grew up poor like me, and no 

extra income was available for 

transportation to those programs, 

you simply stayed home and 

watched TV every day for hours. 

In retrospect, I would have been 

better served being in school. 

I would imagine teachers 

wouldn’t be thrilled to 

give up their long vacation. 

And the athletic apparel companies 

that enjoy the income 

Amateur Athletic Union summer 

leagues generate wouldn’t 

like it much either. Nor would 

the colleges and universities that 

rake in extra cash brought in 

by hosting summer programs. 

But the biggest obstacle to reevaluating 

summer vacations is 

probably our love of the familiar. 

As humans we are naturally 

averse to change and the 

end of summer vacations would 

greatly alter the way we’ve done 

things for more than 100 years. 

But what terrible thing would 

happen if we made the entire 

year part of the education process, 

with mini-breaks sprinkled 

throughout? Year-round schooling 

would not be repealing the 

child labor laws of 1938 and it 

won’t force kids to lose their 

childhood. But it would give 

our young more of a fighting 

chance. The world is getting 

smaller, the world is getting 

smarter and if you look around 

you’ll see when it comes to 

education, we’re no longer basking 

in the glow of superiority. 

We’re wallowing in mediocrity. 

And our kids don’t even know it.

As Americans continue 

debating the effects 

of racism on modern 

life in the U.S., many 

agree that we’ve yet to 

become a “colorblind 

society.”

WASHINGTON — During a 

week when the national media 

are celebrating the 50th anniversary 

of the Freedom Rides 

and the progress made since 

then against racial bias, concerns 

persist about deep-seated 

racism in the United States. 

Recently, for example, leaders 

of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation 

were faced with accusations 

that their $75 million initiative 

to address structural racism in 

America was unnecessary. They 

answered their critics during a 

forum on race and racism hosted 

by the Hudson Institute. 

Quoting author William 

Faulkner, Kellogg Foundation 

President Sterling Speirn told 

the audience that structural racism 

in America continues to 

affect people of color. “The past 

is not dead. The past isn’t even 

in the past. The past is alive 

now,” Speirn said at the forum 

last month entitled “Race and 

Racism in America: Are We 

Now a Colorblind Society?” 

Gail Christopher, the Kellogg 

vice president overseeing the 

foundation’s “America Healing” 

initiative, said, “Racism is a set 

of beliefs that helped to shape 

this nation. To suggest that centuries 

of institutionalizing those 

beliefs could suddenly be eradicated 

in less than 75 years is, I 

believe, simplistic, misguided, 

naïve at best.” 

But the foundation has come 

under attack by some critics, 

who contend that structural racism 

— race bias ingrained in 

institutions, policies and attitudes 

— is no longer an obstacle 

for people of color in the United 

States. They call for evidence 

that such barriers still exist. 

Others, who also largely reject 

the argument that 400 years 

of U.S. history has resulted in 

systemic or structural barriers, 

insist that any obstacle related 

to race, should it exist, can be 

overcome by individual endeavor 

and anti-discrimination laws. 

A Wall Street Journal editorial 

by Harvard University’s 

Stephan Thernstrom decrying 

the Kellogg initiative partly led 

to the Hudson Institute’s decision 

to host the forum. Joining 

Thernstrom on the panel were 

Speirn, Christopher and political 

consultant Ron Christie, author 

of “Acting White: The Curious 

History of a Racial Slur.” 

The panelists all said the 

United States is not yet a colorblind 

society, and they agreed 

that their point of divergence 

was on how to achieve it. 

Their comments, however, 

exposed wide philosophical differences. 

Christie, an African- 

American, said he was especially 

concerned that America 

was “self-segregating” again. 

He believes that a flourishing 

“cult of ethnicity” emphasizing 

origins through hyphenated 

identities was counter productive 

in reaching an ideal where 

“we cherish our American citizenship.” 

Thernstrom ceded that 

America’s past was once shaped 

by a caste system based on 

color, but he said the election 

of President Barack Obama was 

one of many indications of the 

capacity of the American people 

to look past race. Stating that “a 

member of the White House is a 

member of the [once] untouchable 

caste,” he stressed that the 

2008 election shows how far 

America has come. 

Also, Thernstrom cited the 

growing number of Blackand-White 

friendships and the 

increased rate of interracial 

marriages as confirmation that 

America is at a very different 

place than when, as he put it, 

“the very heart of the caste system 

was sexual fear. Black men 

were lynched for even looking 

at White women in the wrong 

way.” 

One audience member 

commented afterward that 

Thernstrom was disingenuous 

in citing statistics on racial 

intermarriage as a fundamental 

shift in attitudes on race and 

culture. 

The person pointed to the 

2006 election when the GOP 

ran an ad in Tennessee pandering 

to racial fears in the White 

community. It inferred that the 

Democratic candidate for the 

U.S. Senate, former Rep. Harold 

Ford Jr., an African-American, 

was having sexual relations 

with White women. 

“The ad was successful, I 

might add,” the attendee said, 

noting that Ford lost the election 

after the ad boosted turnout 

for his White opponent. 

Thernstrom not only recoiled 

at the notion of the existence 

of structural racism but took 

exception with the construct of 

White privilege. “I can’t really 

find out quite what White privilege 

is and how you know it 

when you’ve identified it,” he 

said. 

In response, the Kellogg 

Foundation’s Christopher noted 

a 2002 Institute of Medicine 

report revealing how African- 

Americans and members of 

other ethnic groups seek medical 

treatment for the same conditions, 

but are treated differently. 

She said White privilege is 

rooted in a mythology, which 

“suggested that the less pigmentation 

you had, the higher 

up you were on this hierarchy 

of race.” 

Science has long since proved 

that color is only skin deep, 

Christopher said. But racial differences 

are still manifested in 

U.S. society, not only in the 

unconscious actions of many 

individuals, but also in fields as 

diverse as medicine, education 

and employment. 

“The systems that evolved 

from that mythology are alive 

and well,” Christopher said. 

“That’s what we mean by White 

privilege.” 

Yet, it was Speirn’s depiction 

of White privilege that drew the 

most audible reaction from the 

audience: “I love it when Chris 

Rock and others, you know, ask 

White people how much we’d 

have to pay them to be born a 

person of color in the United 

States. It was $50 million.” 

Speirn asserted that one goal 

of the Kellogg Foundation’s 

America Healing grants initiative 

is to enable communities 

“to have courageous conversations 

about race and historic and 

structural racism, and current 

racism.” 

He noted that William K. 

Kellogg founded and endowed 

the foundation with wide latitude 

to determine its initiatives, 

as long as it addressed the 

needs of vulnerable children, 

not regardless of race, poverty 

or other social barriers — but 

because of those factors. 

Christopher said America 

Healing encompasses far more 

than just a Black-White paradigm. 

She cited a California 

community including Whites, 

Hispanics and Blacks that used 

its Kellogg grant to delve into 

the reasons for its poor access 

to quality food. The researchers 

found that individuals doing the 

same job for the same employer 

were “paid differently by 

race,” directly diminishing their 

purchasing power for food and 

other necessities. 

Christopher said that although 

America is not consciously racist, 

“our culture is racialized and 

our systems reflect that.” 

She emphasized that the 

America Healing initiative is 

ambitious in scope, encompassing 

concern for Native 

Americans, African-Americans, 

European Americans, immigrant 

children. Observing that “the 

data would suggest we’ve made 

dramatic progress as a nation,” 

she added, “the data would also 

suggest that we’re at risk.” 

At the conclusion of the panel 

presentation, Christopher took a 

moment to answer the question, 

“What does success look like?” 

She reflected, “When all the 

nuanced histories of the diverse 

groups that helped to build this 

nation are part of the school 

curriculum, and residential segregation 

is no longer the norm,” 

she said. “When poverty is no 

longer racialized in this country 

and a child’s race is no longer 

a major predictor of his future.”

Unlocking Rosa Parks’ other struggle

History is presented with 

accounts of luminaries 

such as Harriet Tubman, 

Frederick Douglas, Sojourner 

Truth, Gabriel Prosser, Dr. 

Martin Luther King, Jr., and 

Rosa Parks. In nearly every 

instance the narrative is narrowly 

offered, and skewed to 

heroics of Black men. 

Mrs. Rosa Parks is no exception. 

To read most history textbooks 

students have been fed 

fiction as to who Mrs. Parks 

was and how she came to be 

the Mother of the Modern Civil 

Rights Movement. I vividly 

remember learning the limited 

lesson that Mrs. Parks was a 

“poor seamstress who was simply 

too tired to move to the 

back of the bus”, as racially segregated 

laws required in most 

American cities, from 1896 

(Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme 

Court case) to 1954 (Brown v. 

Board of Education court case). 

In reality, Mrs. Parks was no 

“shrinking violet” in response 

to racial segregation. First, Rosa 

Parks sought to attend, and completed 

college at the Philander 

School, which was a training 

ground for activists who wanted 

to challenge “Jim Crow” 

laws. Secondly, after finishing 

her studies, Mrs. Parks returned

Meanwhile, in the aftermath 

of the eviction, the owners of 

businesses that line either side 

of Degnan Boulevard — commonly 

referred to as Leimert 

Park Village — are coming to 

terms with the financial and 

cultural implications of the 

departure of a popular gathering 

place. 

One such business owner is 

Sika — his adopted Ghanian 

name — whose namesake store 

sells African jewelry, art, sculptures 

and fashion. Speaking in 

general terms about what he 

sees as the transactional relationship 

between landlords and 

tenants, “at the end of the day, if 

you don’t pay your rent, you’re 

going to be evicted,” said Sika, 

70, who has operated the business 

for the last 20 years. 

All told, Sika painted a bleak 

financial picture for the area 

that may get worse without the 

anchor of the renowned cultural 

center. “On my side, we’ve 

got about 20 stores, but only

Alabama and immediately challenged 

the racist voting laws of 

Alabama by applying for the 

right to vote. In 1943 and 1944, 

Rosa Parks was told she failed 

the voting examination. In 1945, 

Mrs. Parks not only memorized 

the questions, but the answers 

to the exam repeated them to 

voting officials. As a result, she 

passed and was granted her right 

to vote in Alabama — 20-years 

before African-Americans could 

vote via the 1965 Voting Rights 

Act; and 10 years prior to the 

Montgomery Bus Boycott. 

Moreover, Mrs. Parks intentionally 

chose to be a part of 

history. Rosa Parks was elected 

to serve as the Secretary of 

the Montgomery Chapter of the 

NAACP. As such, she regularly 

met with Attorney Fred Gray 

(lawyer to Dr. Martin Luther 

King, Jr.) to strategize on challenging 

racist laws. In fact, 

James Blake, the bus driver on 

whose bus Mrs. Parks refused 

to move was well known within 

the Black community of 

Montgomery as a virulent racist, 

who regularly verbally insulted 

African-Americans, particularly 

Black women. Rosa Parks 

deliberately chose the exact 

bus and the date (December 

1, 1955) to enter the annals of 

world history.

Roundtable founder Earl Ofari 

Hutchinson, whose group has 

held its meetings at the former 

cultural center for the past four 

years, lamented its passing. 

“I think the closing of Lucy 

Florence is a major loss to the 

community for two reasons,” 

he said. “Firstly, when you look 

at Leimert Park, we have struggling 

businesses there and that 

was an anchor with the roundtables, 

the political, social and 

cultural events … the plays and 

musicals … were all a major 

draw. 

However, one major role Mrs. 

Parks played in history has not 

been sufficiently revealed until 

recently in the form of the book, 

“The Dark End of the Street,” 

(2010) by Danielle McGuire. 

Due, in part, to male dominated 

civil rights historians the role 

of Black women has usually 

been relegated to secondary status. 

In her book, Ms. McGuire 

exposes wide-spread cases of 

rape by White men of Black 

women, few of which went 

to trial, and despicably even 

less resulted in conviction. All- 

White juries from 1896 to well 

into the 1960’s simply refused 

to honor justice and convict 

Whites of crimes against Blacks 

(Let me not mention the “legal” 

rape of Black women by White 

“Founding Fathers” such as 

Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, 

and others). 

In one particular case in 

1944 a young, married African- 

American woman named Mrs. 

Recy Taylor was walking home 

from church with family members 

on a dark road when a 

car full of White men slowly 

passed and returned. At gunpoint, 

Mrs. Taylor was taken 

and gang raped by 6 of the 

7 men. Like countless Black 

women raped by White men 

prior to the 1960s, Mrs. Taylor 

was let go by her captors and 

“It was not just an African- 

American owned social and 

cultural business, but also internationally 

known and people 

came from all over. Secondly, 

we’re losing so many of our 

institutions … Black-owned 

and Black-managed institutions. 

You see it in the arts, in business 

and so many places.” 

In terms of the economic 

implications of Lucy Florence’s 

departure, Hutchinson doesn’t 

believe it is a death knell for the 

village, but predicted that it will 

have a “damaging” effect. 

“It brought so many people 

into the area,” he said, “and 

many of them stayed around 

and shopped at some of the 

other businesses and integrated 

themselves into the social and 

cultural life of Leimert Park.” 

Activist Najee Ali, who was 

recently released from prison 

and was welcomed home with 

a celebration held at Lucy 

Florence, called it a “cornerstone 

of the village” and called 

on African-Americans to support 

their own businesses. “It 

was one of the most important 

businesses, along with Eso Won 

Books, that actually drew peo- 

threatened by death if she told. 

Unlike most, she immediately 

and courageously told her family 

and the National Association 

for the Advancement of Colored 

People (NAACP). 

Mrs. Parks was assigned by 

the NAACP to investigate the 

rape case and organized a portion 

of the Black community to 

call for the rapists to stand trial. 

She won the battle of bringing 

the men to court twice, 

but all-White juries never convicted 

the rapists. Nonetheless, 

Mrs. Parks’ organizing skills 

and activism led to a network 

of community organizers upon 

which the historic Montgomery 

Bus Boycott was successful. 

Who knew? 

Actually, many historians 

knew of Mrs. Parks’ work on the 

Recy Taylor case but declined 

to write about such due to the 

violence of rape, and the need 

to first dismantle racial segregation 

via federal legislation such 

as the 1964 Civil Rights Act; 

the 1965 Voting Rights Act; and 

the 1968 Fair Housing Act. 

America cannot move

moves into a frank discussion 

of the lasting effects of the false 

notion of White supremacy.

more businesses here to bring in 

the people. We especially need 

more restaurants, but it’s difficult 

for them to make it here, 

because people with money 

don’t come into this area.” 

Hendrix revealed that she 

tried to convince the owner of 

Inglewood’s popular Dulan’s 

Soul Food Kitchen to open in 

the village. 

“He said it would be too hard,” 

said Hendrix, “and there’s not 

enough foot traffic.” 

“This nonpartisan legislation is intended to promote two outcomes: the registration and hopefully, 

the participation in government of eligible voters. It is estimated that more than one million people in 

Los Angeles County are eligible to vote but are not registered to do so, and having an online process 

would be an important means of encouraging these citizens to vote. Online voting is an environmentally 

responsible process; it would save the County significant amounts of money by reducing the processing 

of paper-based voter registration forms. But most importantly, it has the potential to invigorate 

participation in our democracy.” — Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, explaining his work to urge 

his colleagues to state legislation to authorizing counties to develop electronic voter registration 

systems. Under the bill, eligible voters would be able to electronically submit an affidavit of voter 

registration on an official county web site, provided the county in which the individual resides has 

opted to comply with specified provisions. The bill does not amend or alter existing criteria for 

voter eligibility. Voters would still be required to have a valid California driver’s license or state 

identification card and reside in the county in order to electronically register and vote online.

FOOTBALL COACHES MEET — This weekend looms large 

for football and the African-Americans who love it: The Urban 

Football Coaches Association is coming to town and bringing with 

it legendary Black football coaches, chief among whom is John 

Wooten, who is considered the architect of the NFL’s Rooney Rule 

that requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching 

and senior football operations opportunities. The 74-year-old 

Wooten, who is constantly consulted on who in football should get 

what job, now serves as chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, an 

organization that advocates for racial diversity in sports. (Frederick 

“Fritz” Pollard was the first Black NFL coach. He coached the 

Akron Pros in 1921.) Two full days of activities have been planned 

for the association’s 20th anniversary observance here, starting with 

honors generated by Councilman Herb Wesson at Friday morning’s 

City Council meeting, followed by a meet-and-greet at the Crenshaw 

Mall, then a reception Friday evening in the Grammy Museum at 

LA Live, where Wooten will present awards to Dorsey High School 

graduate Hue Jackson, head coach of the Oakland Raiders, and to 

Juan Castillo, defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles and 

the second highest ranking Latino coach in the NFL. 

Saturday will be devoted to a day of NFL coaches’ clinics and 

NCAA workshops in the Marriott Hotel at LA Live and will feature 

Black NFL coaches Ron Prince, Chris White, Greg Williams and 

Kirby Wilson, as well as Castillo. Black NCAA coaches from six 

schools will present workshops, including Mike Johnson, offensive 

coordinator at UCLA. 

GOTCHA, CVS! — This is interesting. State Attorney General 

Kamala Harris announced that a settlement was obtained last 

month with the CVS drugstore chain for its having overcharged the 

state’s Medi-Cal program for prescription drugs. CVS is a monster. 

It has gobbled up every piece of retail property standing in some 

communities. Los Angeles is home to wall-to-wall CVS. Just in 

my neighborhood, in one year CVS took over our landmark and 

very popular Long’s Drugstore, which was older than I am; it took 

over Michael’s, our only and hence, very popular home decorating 

store, which was almost as old as I am and it took over the Border’s 

Bookstore, which was where I bought all my books and stuff! And 

this is just in my little neck-of-the-woods and does not include 

the CVS that had already popped up on nearby streets. And they 

have the nerve to overcharge taxpayers for poor folks’ medicine! I 

never go to any CVS for anything; the sight of them makes me sick 

because I hate them. But I digress. 

Our wonderful Kamala Harris said CVS will reimburse California 

more than $1.76 million as part of a $17.5 million settlement with 

the U.S. Department of Justice and nine other states. “CVS chose 

to short-change taxpayers and undermine our health care safety net 

with these actions. We are all better off now that this deception has 

been uncovered,” Harris said. She ought to shut them down. They’re 

evil and they’re taking over the planet. 

STATE BUSINESS — Assemblyman Steve Bradford’s bill 

to reduce recidivism, AB 1384, passed out of the Assembly 

Appropriations Committee this week. The bill would allow the 

courts discretion to expunge misdemeanor convictions where a 

person has not been sentenced to probation. Bradford feels his bill 

would provide an incentive for people convicted of low-level misdemeanors 

to stay out of the criminal justice system by giving them 

the opportunity to find work and housing and reintegrate into society. 

Assembly Speaker John Perez has reappointed William A. 

Burke, husband of retired Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, 

to the California Coastal Commission in a seat he has held since his 

first appointment to it in 2002. Burke’s new term will expire in May 

2015. 

COUNTY BUSINESS — On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors 

passed a motion, introduced by Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas 

and Don Knabe, supporting efforts to reform California’s redevelopment 

agency laws by strengthening their accountability for 

the production of low-to-moderate income housing. The motion 

places the board in support of SB 450, sponsored by state Sen. Alan 

Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), which would, among other things, 

require redevelopment agencies to spend at least 70 percent of lowto-moderate 

housing funds on production, rehabilitation or the preservation 

of housing for extremely low to low-income households. 

“The motion also reaffirms the board’s commitment to improving 

the administration of redevelopment agencies, as their wholesale 

elimination as proposed by the governor appears stalled in the 

Legislature,” Ridley-Thomas said. 

COMMUNITY BUSINESS — The Fix Expo Rail Campaign is 

holding an organizing meeting Thursday, from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m., to 

get the community’s ducks in a row for next week’s confrontation 

with the MTA Board about the Crenshaw subway’s remaining issues. 

The meeting will be held in the U.S. Bank’s Community Room, on 

the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson, at which residents will be educated 

and energized about their demands that a Leimert Park Village 

Station be included along the subway route and that the final mile of 

the subway be constructed underground. The decision on these two 

demands will be made by the MTA Board on May 26. 

African-American parents, students and activists are currently 

at odds with the Los Angeles Unified School District about reform 

plans under way at two schools with large numbers of Black students: 

Westchester High and Henry Clay Middle schools. People are 

particularly distressed about the school district’s proposed conversion 

of Westchester into a full magnet school and about the LAUSD 

school board’s decision to turn Clay over to those Green Dot charter 

school system people. The Coalition for Black Student Equity will 

host a community meeting Saturday with LAUSD Superintendent 

John Deasy to address concerns about the future of these two 

schools and district plans to increase Black student achievement in 

the public schools. The meeting will be held at Southside Bethel 

Baptist Church, 10400 S. San Pedro Ave. beginning at 10 a.m. 

It seems Fran Jemmott, the renegade president of the embattled 

United Homeowners Association, resigned Monday, giving rise to 

the hope that the rest of the ousted UHA officers will go away too, 

that their various lawsuits will be settled and that this organization 

will function like it has some sense, for a change. 

NATE HOLDEN SEZ — “The developers want city taxpayers 

to float a $350 million bond to finance the construction of AEG’s 

downtown football stadium. Recently, I testified before the City 

Council’s ad hoc committee on the stadium and I asked the question: 

‘When would the developer advance finances to support the 

project?’ I got no answer. Instead, I was told that AEG would provide 

a ‘letter of credit,’ the same as it did for the construction of 

Staples Center. I raised questions about the legitimacy of AEG’s 

letter of credit at that time and I still have questions. I tell you, the 

letter of credit is not worth the paper it’s written on. Initially, the 

city demanded and won a $76 million letter of credit to guarantee 

repayment of subsidies for Staples Center. I am ashamed to say that 

in April 2003, the City Council was influenced and pressured to 

rescind the action requiring the letter of credit and they let AEG off 

the hook. The proposal for Staples Center was shameful then and 

the proposal for Farmer’s Field is shameful now. Ultimately, the 

taxpayers would be responsible for paying the $350 million bond; 

therefore, they should have a say in it and should have the right to 

vote on it.”

As far as R-rated ensemble 

comedy hijinks are 

concerned, the cast of 

“Bridesmaids,” led by Kristen 

Wiig and Maya Rudolph, can 

give the normally male denizens 

of the genre a run for their 

money. Wiig, who co-wrote the 

movie with Annie Mumolo, 

plays a lovelorn maid of honor 

whose world unravels as she 

prepares to celebrate a longawaited 

day in the life of her 

best friend (Rudolph). Joining 

in the fun is a talented group of 

comic performers that includes 

Rose Byrne (“Get Him to the 

Greek”), Wendi McClendon- 

Covey (“Reno 911!”), Ellie 

Kemper (“The Office”) and 

Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & 

Molly”). But they did have a 

little help from the boys in the 

shape of renowned comedy 

impresario Judd Apatow, and 

the film was directed by Paul 

Feig, creator of the TV cult hit, 

“Freaks and Geeks.” Although, 

the jokes are fast and funny, 

there is an emotional undercurrent 

that keeps audiences 

invested in what happens to 

the central characters. In other 

words, the women have great 

chemistry — which was only 

enhanced by their shared history. 

For instance, Wiig, Mumolo, 

McCarthy and Rudolph are all 

former members of L.A. improv 

troupe The Groundlings, with 

Wiig and Rudolph going on 

to become regular players on

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s latest exhibition 

explores the full range of acclaimed film director Tim 

Burton’s creativity — including his work as an artist, 

illustrator, photographer and writer — by bringing together 

more than 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, film and 

video works, storyboards, maquettes, costumes and cinematic

the fun — and sometimes gross 

— process of making a film that 

some observers have said could 

define a new genre of comedy 

— the “womance.” 

Did you think about changing 

the title to appeal more to 

men? 

Wiig: We were going to call 

it “Boobs and Guns.” But, no 

really we had a hard time with 

the title to be honest. Originally, 

it was called “Maid of Honor.” 

Apatow: I actually had a 

friend who was also coming out 

with a romantic comedy about 

bridesmaids and he wanted to 

call his movie “Maid of Honor.” 

He called and asked if it would 

be OK for him to use the title. I 

said, “You can’t do that, because 

that’s what we’re going with.” 

So he called his movie “Made 

of Honor.” 

There’s a particularly gross 

scene after the bridesmaids 

get food poisoning. Did you 

feel bad about putting them 

through that? 

Wiig: I guess when they were 

puking on each others hair I 

did feel bad, but they actually 

liked it. And I really made them 

throw up — it was real vomit. 

Rudolph: Professionally, 

I’ve done a lot of fake barfing 

in my time ... I’ve put a lot of 

room temperature corn chowder

in my mouth. It’s sort of my 

go to. 

Have you had any real wedding 

nightmares? 

Wiig: Oh, you’re going to be 

so disappointed at my answer. 

I haven’t really had any crazy 

wedding experiences. The closest 

thing is more like the friendship 

stuff; the people in your life 

who you feel are moving on and 

having this normal life … cars, 

houses and babies and stuff. 

And you think what’s wrong 

with me, I’m an actor going on 

auditions and having odd jobs 

into my late 20s and early 30s. 

My friends are very supportive, 

but I don’t back home. 

What was it like working on 

a project with so much shared 

history? 

Rudolph: It was special, like 

getting the band back together. 

When you know the people 

you’re going to be playing with 

it’s so much fun. It’s like having 

a delicious meal ... you 

know what your friends can do, 

and when you’re improvising as 

part of an ensemble that is what 

real sketch comedy is all about. 

Wiig: I’ve known Annie for 

such a long time from when we 

started writing together in The 

Groundlings. It’s never been 

work, it’s always been fun. We 

worked on the script for four 

and a half years and we’ve 

never gotten into a fight.

Adam Plutko has been named 

Pac-10 pitcher of the week. 

Plutko threw a two-hit complete 

game shutout in the series 

fi nale at Oregon Sunday, helping 

the Bruins earn the road sweep. 

He struck out seven and walked 

one, facing three over the minimum. 

He allowed just one baserunner 

through the fi nal fi ve 

innings to notch his fi rst career 

complete game and UCLA’s second 

in as many days. 

Plutko lowered his ERA to 

1.59 and has gone 2-0 with 

a 1.05 ERA through his last 

six starts. He is 4-3 with 68 

strikeouts and 17 walks in 79.1 

innings this spring.

UCLA’s Cory Primm and 

Ashlea McLaughlin are the Pac- 

10 men’s and women’s track 

athletes of the week. 

Primm won the top section 

of the 800 meters Saturday at 

the Oxy Invitational with the No. 

3 time in the NCAA this season. 

Primm’s time of 1:46.20 

knocked nearly two seconds off 

his previous season-best mark. 

McLaughlin ran a lifetimebest 

in the 400 meters at the 

Oxy Invitational. She fi nished

best 52.95. McLaughlin’s 

time ranks 13th in the NCAA

Smith leads way for Dorsey

Nothing like a little senior 

leadership to get a team through 

a rough patch. 

Shortstop Stephen Smith got 

the Dorsey High School baseball 

team through one Tuesday 

night and the result was a critical 

come-from-behind 11-6 victory 

over West Adams Prep at Roybal 

L.C. 

The victory enabled the Dons 

(10-6, 7-4) to move into a thirdplace 

tie with West Adams (12-5, 

7-4) in the Coliseum League race. 

With a playoff berth at stake, the 

two teams close the regular season 

against each other at 6 p.m. 

Thursday at West Adams. 

Dorsey can thank the slick 

glove work and clutch hitting of 

Smith for putting them in that position. 

As Dons coach Peter Dobson 

said, “He really came through 

tonight.” 

It was his two-run double that 

broke a 6-6 tie and sparked a sixrun 

fi fth inning that enabled the 

Dons to take control of a contest 

they trailed 6-2 heading into the 

last of the second. 

Earlier, he had turned what appeared 

to be a sure single up the 

middle by Andrew Diego into a 

force play. In the top of the seventh, 

he completed a 4-6-3 double 

play following a leadoff single 

by Diego, who was 2-for-4. 

Smith, who was 2-for-5 and 

scored two runs, said he lives for 

the big moments. 

“I love the clutch and as a senior 

I’d rather the game came 

down to me,” he said. “Win or 

lose it’s my fault. That way the 

younger ones, the underclassmen, 

can see how to react in that 

situation.” 

He felt he had a role to play 

when the team fell behind right 

off the bat. 

“I told them to keep it together, 

to stay strong, stay focused, and 

not let the little errors mess us 

up,” he said. 

One of the younger players 

who did come through for the 

Dons was freshman David Lamas, 

who had to take over on the 

mound in the second inning after 

Deiondre Nelson struggled. 

He would shut out the Panthers 

the rest of the way, allowing only 

fi ve hits, while striking out four 

and walking none. Lamas, who 

started the game at third base, 

went 2-for-3 with an RBI and 

three runs scored. 

Oscar Lamas went 2-for-3 with 

a double and three RBIs. 

For West Adams, shortstop 

Corey Akins went 2-for-3 and 

third baseman Steven Garcia 

went 2-for-4 with a double and 

two RBIs. 

King-Drew 6, Manual Arts 

1: John Narvaes (3-6) pitched a 

two-hitter and went 3-for-4 with 

two RBIs at the plate to lead 

King-Drew (6-13, 4-7) to a 6-1 

Coliseum League victory over 

Manual Arts (2-12, 1-10). 

He struck out three and walked 

three. 

Rahean Hart went 2-for-3 with 

an RBI and Chris Anderson went

Brother battery provides spark in win

for the Crenshaw High School 

baseball, its brother battery 

showed there is much to look 

forward to in the future. 

Sophomore pitcher Edgar Resendez, 

throwing to his freshman 

brother, Oscar, pitched six innings 

of seven-hit ball in helping 

the Cougars defeat Fremont, 

11-5 Tuesday at Athens Park and 

keep their title hopes alive. 

A Crenshaw victory Thursday 

at home against Fremont would 

give the Cougars (9-3, 8-3) a 

share of the league championship 

with Locke, which concluded its 

regular season last week. The 

Cougars will throw ace Keymon 

Thomas at the Pathfi nders Thursday. 

They did well enough with 

their number two pitcher Resendez 

(2-0), who needed only 81 

pitches to dispatch the Pathfi nders 

(7-13, 3-8). 

“I just tried to throw the ball 

right over the plate and strike 

guys out,” said Resendez, who 

struck out six. “I just wanted to 

fi nish off the batters.” 

He admitted it was nice throw- 


ing to his brother, who also contributed 

an RBI-single. 

“Since I was a little kid, I’ve 

always thrown to him,” he said. 

“It makes me feel comfortable.” 

“I thought Edgar did a good 

job today,” Crenshaw coach Art 

Burke said. 

Crenshaw managed only nine 

hits, but was aided by six Fremont 

errors, four during a fourrun 

third inning in which the 

Cougars did not get a hit. 

“It seems like we always have 

that kind of inning,” Fremont 

coach Curtis Johnson said. “Until 

that point we were doing pretty 

well.” 

Silvestre Quintanilla, who 

went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, was 

the lone Cougar with more than 

one hit. 

Thomas crashed a long home 

run to right during the seventh. 

Lavale Adolph, who pitched the 

seventh, hada scoring fl y ball and 

single and Avantre Lesley had 

an RBI single and scored three 

runs. 

Christian Garcia went 3-for-3 

and Carlos Garcia went 3-for-4 

with two RBIs to pace the Pathfi 

nders offensively. Marc Garcia

After all, the sophomore led 

the SCC in nine different offensive 

categories while helping the 

Tartars tie for second place with 

East L.A. in the standings. 

Young’s numbers in conference 

included a .465 batting average, 

10 doubles, two triples, 

two home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 

stolen bases in conference play. 

For the season, he batted .428 

(62-for-145) with three homers, 

13 doubles, two triples and 24 

RBIs. He also stole 22 bases. 

Young isn’t the only Tartar 

represented on the All-SCC fi rst 

team.

The District is seeking assistance from qualified 

firms to provide an identity management solution 

(“IDM”). A key part to the IDM is to implement a 

Single-Sign-On across the District and its nine col- 

leges. LACCD seeks a scalable and cost-effective 

solution. The capabilities of such a system must 

meet or exceed the performance levels and tech-

Desmond Henry shoulders 

extra burdens as the senior star 

of a relatively young Centennial 

High School baseball team. 

Not only is the center fi elder 

trying to help the Apaches win 

games in the competitive Pioneer 

League, but is also auditioning 

for the major league scouts that 

regularly show up at his games. 

The wins have been far and 

few between for the Compton 

school that is 4-15 overall and 

1-6 in league following Friday’s 

13-2 loss to South Torrance at the 

MLB Urban Youth Academy. 

Henry had his moments, driv- 

ing in one of the two runs with a 

third-inning single and also mak- 

ing a great running catch despite 

colliding with the right fi elder. 

But even someone expected 

to go fairly high in next months 

Major League Baseball fi rst- 

year player draft can’t do it all 

for a team that started freshmen 

at third base (Tyree Davis), sec- 

ond base (Jose Valencia) and on 

the mound (Sharkie Hurst) and a 

sophomore at shortstop (Caleb 

Valentine). 

“Desmond has tried to carry 

the team and he’s a great base- 

ball player, but he needs help,” 

Centennial coach Gerald Pick- 

ens said. “He has no support.” 

Henry is hitting over .300 and 

has nearly 40 stolen bases, but 

Pickens feels his star could be 

doing even better. Pickens cites 

Henry’s tendency to swing for 

the fences, rather than rely more 

on his speed. 

It’s that speed on the basepaths 

and in the fi eld is what scouts 

are really enamored with, any- 

way, according to the Centennial 

coach. 

Trying to hit home runs “has 

affected his batting. He’s had a 

so-so season because he is trying 

to do too much. 

“But defensively, he’s awe- 

some. One scout told me that (the 

one in which he collided with a 

teammate) was the best catch by 

he’s seen made by a high school 

player this year and he got in- 

jured on the play running into 

the right fi elder (Henry, by the 

way, did call for the ball).” 

In recent years, Andrew Tous- 

saint and Chris Smith have come 

out of the Centennial program to 

play professional baseball. 

Henry could be the next. 

“He should have a great base- 

ball career,” Pickens said. “The 

scouts like him, especially the 

way he deals with adversity. And 

that’s something he’ll have to do. 

He can hit, plus he has the speed 

and he’s great with the glove.” 

The future for Centennial was 

also on display Friday. 

Davis had a double and Val- 

entine had a single and double. 

Hurst pitched four-plus innings.

Carson will host Major League 

Soccer’s championship event for 

the fourth time in league history 

in the fall. 

MLS Cup 2011 kicks off at 6 

p.m. (live on ESPN and Galavi- 

sion) Nov. 20 at the home of the 

Galaxy. 

“We are extremely pleased to 

be able to once again host MLS 

Cup, our league’s most important 

game, in the premier soccer sta- 

dium in this country, The Home 

Depot Center,” Galaxy president 

Tom Payne said. “Los Angeles is 

very familiar with hosting major 

events and this championship 

game is going to be embraced 

by the entire city. We would like 

nothing more than to be playing 

in MLS Cup 2011 at home in 

front of our fans.” 

The three previous MLS Cup 

matches held at The Home De- 

pot Center featured an average 

of fi ve goals per game. In 2008, 

a sold out crowd of 27,000 wit- 

nessed Columbus Crew’s Guill- 

ermo Barros Schelotto set up all 

of his team’s goals in a 3-1 victo- 

ry over the New York Red Bulls. 

In 2004, D.C. United lifted the 

MLS Cup trophy after a 3-2 win 

over the Kansas City Wizards. 

In 2003, another capacity crowd 

saw the San Jose Earthquakes 

defeat the Chicago Fire, 4-2, in a 

wide-open contest.

championship event back to the 

city of Los Angeles and The 

Home Depot Center, one of the 

fi nest sports venues in the Unit- 

ed States,” MLS commissioner

is a right-leaning group of business 

people who are anathema 

to my progressive agenda and I 

usually dislike the people they 

support. However, this time they 

got it right. This time they convened 

at the Westin Bonaventure 

Hotel and honored a man who 

was born and raised to lead the 

life he does: Keeping the peace 

and helping people — the lowliest 

and most abject of our people: 

the victims of life, the homeless, 

the derelict, the physically and 

mentally ill, the substance abusers, 

the “copeless” and hopeless 

and absolute “have-nots” among 

us. 

Wendell Blassingame said he’s 

been on Skid Row for almost 12 

years and that Joseph has made 

a tremendous difference in his 

neighborhood. 

Blassingame, who is an 

executive board member of 

the Downtown Neighborhood 

Council, said that in the 6-1/2 

years he’s known Joseph, “Skid 

Row is becoming a community; 

a place where, regardless of your 

circumstances, you know you 

have the right to live with dignity. 

We respect Joseph. When 

he first came, we respected him 

as an officer, but now we respect 

him as a human being because he 

respects us as human beings. 

“I’ve seen a great change in 

this area,” Blassingame continued. 

“Before Joseph, there was 

no interaction between the police 

and us. Their hands were tied. 

After all, two out of every three 

residents here are either on probation 

or on parole, so I suppose 

that statistic required a certain 

kind of policing whenever an 

officer saw more than six Black 

men standing around. But Joseph 

took a different approach: He got 

out of his car and started walking 

down the street, not to make 

arrests necessarily, but to find out 

what you’re doing, what’s going 

on and why you’re laying on the 

ground. 

“Joseph doesn’t like to see 

people lying on the ground,” 

Blassingame added. “His attitude 

is that if you’re lying on the 

ground, you must be sick and he 

and surrounding businesses that 

could provide mentorship and 

internships to high school students. 

Jobs and revenue could 

be created, she added, by attracting 

major retailers, establishing 

public/private partnerships that 

would fuel the local economy 

and encourage local shopping. 

Public safety — a huge concern 

among residents — could 

be enhanced, Calhoun said, by 

demanding new standards and 

policies, increasing visibility 

and accountability among law 

enforcement officers and promoting 

after-school and gang 

prevention programs.

Joseph regularly drives through 

Skid Row in what residents call 

“Big Blue,” a huge mobile home 

from which he dispenses social 

service referrals of all kind. He 

has developed several programs 

for the youth living on Skid Row, 

including one called “Just Like 

U,” which is designed to keep 

youth out of gangs and away 

from the temptations of the street 

by bringing them in contact with 

fellow council members Lillie 

Dobson and Yvonne Arceneaux, 

Rep. Laura Richardson, 

Assemblyman Steve Bradford, 

state Sen. Rod Wright, and 

Compton Unified School District 

Board members Fred Easter and 

Margie Shipp, to name a few 

— Zurita is steady hitting the 

pavement. 

During her campaign, she has 

gone door-to-door speaking to 

constituents, passed out literature 

and sent out mailers. But 

she has extended her reach by 

becoming active on Facebook — 

where she encourages residents 

to vote and has posted a number 

of videos from supporters 

— and Twitter. She is endorsed 

by her mother, Compton Unified 

successful adults. 

He has also implemented the 

“Ladies Night” program to help 

women who live on the streets. 

“Ladies Night” activities include 

self-esteem-building, domestic 

violence seminars on the process 

and importance of reporting 

crimes committed against 

them and the techniques of self 

defense. 

“It is a blessing to know an 

officer like that,” Blassingame 

said. 

In addition to having been designated 

a “Los Angeles Treasure” 

last month, Joseph was recently 

given the “Hero for Hope” 

Award for outstanding community 

service by the Los Angeles 

Rescue Mission. 

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, 

who participated in the Central 

Cities ceremony, said in an interview: 

“Deon worked for me 

when I was the captain at Central 

Station. He was one of my best 

senior lead officers and is an 

outstanding individual. He really

But Joseph, the son of Milton 

and the late Margie Joseph, 

doesn’t know how to do anything 

else. During their lifetime, his 

parents raised 41 foster children 

and he was in the house with 17 

of them. 

“I grew up helping, and I had 

to share my parents’ love with 

a lot of people,” Joseph said. 

“I grew up dealing with human 

needs and the problems that 

result when they are unmet and 

I learned from my parents how 

best to mitigate those problems 

and fulfill some needs. 

“I didn’t set out to become a 

police officer; I sort of backed 

into it. I appreciate the honors 

bestowed upon me, but even 

without them, I must confess 

that what I do for a living is the 

most fulfilling thing I’ve ever 

done and I can’t imagine doing 

anything else.”

times we must be frugal with

basic services. … I will vote for 

what’s right — not what’s popular. 

I will bring transparency, 

dignity and integrity back to our 

community.” 

Recognizing that the city is in 

a deficit and that city employees 

jobs hang in the balance, 

Calhoun said there are more 

tough decisions ahead. “Before I 

even vote to lay off any employees, 

we are going to have to 

start with consultants,” she said. 

“Every time something goes 

wrong, everybody wants to balance 

the budget on the backs of 

the people that do the job. So, 

it’s going to be tough. We need 

our unions to work with us; we 

need the unions to work together 

and build a coalition.” 

Audit finds hundreds 

of unused city phones

Greuel said. “That is no way to 

manage a $7 billion operation.” 

The Information Technology 

Agency set guidelines for cell 

phone usage, but it does not 

have the authority to say which 

employees should get cell 

phones paid for by taxpayers. 

“Nobody is minding the store 

on the city’s cell phone usage,” 

she said. 

Her audit found 563 cell 

phones in the seven departments 

had not been used for two to 

three consecutive months but 

still cost the city about $46,000 

per month. 

The audit included 13 recommendations 

ranging from setting 

new rules for assigning cell 

phones to giving employees only 

a set number of minutes or textmessaging 

per month. Greuel 

wants all cell phone contracts to 

be periodically evaluated. 

City Councilman Tony 

Cardenas has begun an effort 

to reduce cell phone costs in the 

Department of General Services 

and the Information Technology 

Agency. 

But Greuel said Cardenas’ 

efforts do not go far enough. 

“It does not go to some of the 

largest users in the city of Los 

Angeles. It does not look at the 

option of stipends, and it does 

not look at the fact that we need 



to have a central area where we 

know how many cell phones we 

have,” Greuel said, adding that 

the city needed to reduce the 

number of cell phones. 

Kevin Crawford, the general 

manager of the city’s 

Information technology Agency, 

told the City Council last week 

his department is on track to cut 

its cell phone budget by 50 percent, 

while putting 50 percent 

more pre-paid cell phones in use 

and getting rid of pagers. 

Cardenas said a central authority 

would likely become a onesize 

fits all approach. 

“When it comes to creating 

a central authority, I think it’s 

probably just creating more 

bureaucracy than we need,” 

Cardenas said. “You should 

only get the type of policy that 

is specific to the user, where 

everybody who gets a cellphone 

is getting a contract that best fits 

them.”
