Wiig, who co-wrote the movie with Annie Mumolo, plays a lovelorn maid of honor whose world unravels as she prepares to celebrate a longawaited day in the life of her best friend (Rudolph). Joining in the fun is a talented group of comic performers that includes Rose Byrne (“Get Him to the Greek”), Wendi McClendon- Covey (“Reno 911!”), Ellie Kemper (“The Office”) and Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & Molly”). But they did have a little help from the boys in the shape of renowned comedy impresario Judd Apatow, and the film was directed by Paul Feig, creator of the TV cult hit, “Freaks and Geeks.” Although, the jokes are fast and funny, there is an emotional undercurrent that keeps audiences invested in what happens to the central characters. In other words, the women have great chemistry — which was only enhanced by their shared history. For instance, Wiig, Mumolo, McCarthy and Rudolph are all former members of L.A. improv troupe The Groundlings, with Wiig and Rudolph going on to become regular players on VISUAL Animated Art The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s latest exhibition explores the full range of acclaimed film director Tim Burton’s creativity — including his work as an artist, illustrator, photographer and writer — by bringing together more than 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, film and video works, storyboards, maquettes, costumes and cinematic ephemera. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. “Saturday Night Live.” In a recent conversation with L.A. entertainment journalists, Wiig, Rudolph and Apatow recalled the fun — and sometimes gross — process of making a film that some observers have said could define a new genre of comedy — the “womance.” Did you think about changing the title to appeal more to men? Wiig: We were going to call it “Boobs and Guns.” But, no really we had a hard time with the title to be honest. Originally, it was called “Maid of Honor.” Apatow: I actually had a friend who was also coming out with a romantic comedy about bridesmaids and he wanted to call his movie “Maid of Honor.” He called and asked if it would be OK for him to use the title. I said, “You can’t do that, because that’s what we’re going with.” So he called his movie “Made of Honor.” There’s a particularly gross scene after the bridesmaids get food poisoning. Did you feel bad about putting them through that? Wiig: I guess when they were puking on each others hair I did feel bad, but they actually liked it. And I really made them throw up — it was real vomit. Rudolph: Professionally, I’ve done a lot of fake barfing in my time ... It’s sort of my go to. Have you had any real wedding nightmares? Wiig: Oh, you’re going to be so disappointed at my answer. I haven’t really had any crazy wedding experiences. The closest thing is more like the friendship stuff; the people in your life who you feel are moving on and having this normal life … cars, houses and babies and stuff. And you think what’s wrong with me, I’m an actor going on auditions and having odd jobs into my late 20s and early 30s. My friends are very supportive, but I don’t back home. What was it like working on a project with so much shared history? Rudolph: It was special, like getting the band back together. When you know the people you’re going to be playing with it’s so much fun. It’s like having a delicious meal ... you know what your friends can do, and when you’re improvising as part of an ensemble that is what real sketch comedy is all about. Wiig: I’ve known Annie for such a long time from when we started writing together in The Groundlings. It’s never been work, it’s always been fun. We worked on the script for four and a half years and we’ve never gotten into a fight. The No. 4 seeded Trojans (18-6) take on No. 5 UC Irvine (21-8) at 4 p.m. Friday to open eight-team tournament. No. 3 UCLA (24-6) faces No. 6 Indiana (25-11) at 1:30 p.m. Friday in its fi rst-round game. UCLA is led by Montebello High School and Commerce Aquatics Club product Priscilla Orozco, a two-time fi rst-team All-MPSF selection. She leads the Bruins with 56 goals and is sixth among MPSF players with a 1.87 goals per game average. WATER POLO USC senior opposite hitter Murphy Troy has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association men’s Division I-II National Player of the Year. It is the sixth time a Trojan has won the award. Troy is a four-year starter and two-time fi rst-team All-American. He was selected the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation Player of the Year last month. BASKETBALL Serra High School product Hakeem Washington has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Cal State San Bernardino. The Los Angeles native played the past two seasons at Citrus College, helping Citrus win the Western State Conference as a freshman and place second in state this year. The 5-foot-9 point guard averaged 9.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a sophomore. SOFTBALL Former Westchester High School standout Breea Jamerson, a freshman pitcher on the Jackson State softball team, has been named fi rst-team All- Southwestern Conference. Jamerson went 13-9 with 11 complete games and a 3.60 ERA for the Tigers this spring. She also batted .263. Another Westchester product, freshman catcher Arianna Smith batted .282 with 21 RBIs for Jackson State. BASEBALL UCLA freshman right-hander Adam Plutko has been named Pac-10 pitcher of the week. Plutko threw a two-hit complete game shutout in the series fi nale at Oregon Sunday, helping the Bruins earn the road sweep. He struck out seven and walked one, facing three over the minimum. He allowed just one baserunner through the fi nal fi ve innings to notch his fi rst career complete game and UCLA’s second in as many days. Plutko lowered his ERA to 1.59 and has gone 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA through his last six starts. He is 4-3 with 68 strikeouts and 17 walks in 79.1 innings this spring. TRACK UCLA’s Cory Primm and Ashlea McLaughlin are the Pac- 10 men’s and women’s track athletes of the week. Primm won the top section of the 800 meters Saturday at the Oxy Invitational with the No. 3 time in the NCAA this season. Primm’s time of 1:46.20 knocked nearly two seconds off his previous season-best mark. McLaughlin ran a lifetimebest in the 400 meters at the Oxy Invitational. She fi nished second overall and was the top collegiate fi nisher with a personal best 52.95. McLaughlin’s time ranks 13th in the NCAA this season. POLLS Alhambra High School is third and Paramount sixth in the latest Southern Section Division 3 baseball coaches’ poll. Alhambra leads the Almont League, Paramount the San Gabriel Valley heading into the fi nal week of the regular season. In Division 7, Firebaugh is fourth and Animo Leadership sixth. In the softball polls, Warren is third and Downey sixth in Division 3. They rank one-two in the San Gabriel Valley League. Downey Calvary Chapel is again No. 1 in Division 6. In Division 5, Schurr is seventh and Keppel ninth. Wave Staff Serra High School exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and added fi ve more in the fi fth and rolled to a 13-2 victory over host Cantwell Sacred Heart Monday in a Camino Real League baseball game. The second-place Cavaliers improved to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in league, while Cantwell dropped to 9-13 and 5-9. The two teams closed the regular season Wednesday at Serra. Smith leads way for Dorsey BY RON GUILD STAFF WRITER Nothing like a little senior leadership to get a team through a rough patch. Shortstop Stephen Smith got the Dorsey High School baseball team through one Tuesday night and the result was a critical come-from-behind 11-6 victory over West Adams Prep at Roybal L.C. The victory enabled the Dons (10-6, 7-4) to move into a thirdplace tie with West Adams (12-5, 7-4) in the Coliseum League race. With a playoff berth at stake, the two teams close the regular season against each other at 6 p.m. Thursday at West Adams. Dorsey can thank the slick glove work and clutch hitting of Smith for putting them in that position. As Dons coach Peter Dobson said, “He really came through tonight.” It was his two-run double that broke a 6-6 tie and sparked a sixrun fi fth inning that enabled the Dons to take control of a contest they trailed 6-2 heading into the last of the second. Earlier, he had turned what appeared to be a sure single up the middle by Andrew Diego into a force play. In the top of the seventh, he completed a 4-6-3 double play following a leadoff single by Diego, who was 2-for-4. Smith, who was 2-for-5 and scored two runs, said he lives for the big moments. “I love the clutch and as a senior I’d rather the game came down to me,” he said. “Win or lose it’s my fault. That way the younger ones, the underclassmen, can see how to react in that situation.” He felt he had a role to play when the team fell behind right off the bat. “I told them to keep it together, to stay strong, stay focused, and not let the little errors mess us up,” he said. One of the younger players who did come through for the Dons was freshman David Lamas, who had to take over on the mound in the second inning after Deiondre Nelson struggled. He would shut out the Panthers the rest of the way, allowing only fi ve hits, while striking out four and walking none. Lamas, who started the game at third base, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Oscar Lamas went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. For West Adams, shortstop Corey Akins went 2-for-3 and third baseman Steven Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. King-Drew 6, Manual Arts 1: John Narvaes (3-6) pitched a two-hitter and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate to lead King-Drew (6-13, 4-7) to a 6-1 Coliseum League victory over Manual Arts (2-12, 1-10). He struck out three and walked three. Rahean Hart went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Chris Anderson went 1-for-4 with a run batted in for King-Drew. Manual Arts and King-Drew play Thursday at Harvard Recreation Center in the regular-season fi nale. Game time is 3 p.m. Brother battery provides spark in win BY RON GUILD STAFF WRITER While the present in promising for the Crenshaw High School baseball, its brother battery showed there is much to look forward to in the future. Sophomore pitcher Edgar Resendez, throwing to his freshman brother, Oscar, pitched six innings of seven-hit ball in helping the Cougars defeat Fremont, 11-5 Tuesday at Athens Park and keep their title hopes alive. A Crenshaw victory Thursday at home against Fremont would give the Cougars (9-3, 8-3) a share of the league championship with Locke, which concluded its regular season last week. The Cougars will throw ace Keymon Thomas at the Pathfi nders Thursday. They did well enough with their number two pitcher Resendez (2-0), who needed only 81 pitches to dispatch the Pathfi nders (7-13, 3-8). “I just tried to throw the ball right over the plate and strike guys out,” said Resendez, who struck out six. “I just wanted to fi nish off the batters.” He admitted it was nice throw- L O S A N G E L E S W A V E ing to his brother, who also contributed an RBI-single. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve always thrown to him,” he said. “It makes me feel comfortable.” “I thought Edgar did a good job today,” Crenshaw coach Art Burke said. Crenshaw managed only nine hits, but was aided by six Fremont errors, four during a fourrun third inning in which the Cougars did not get a hit. “It seems like we always have that kind of inning,” Fremont coach Curtis Johnson said. “Until that point we were doing pretty well.” Silvestre Quintanilla, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, was the lone Cougar with more than one hit. Thomas crashed a long home run to right during the seventh. Lavale Adolph, who pitched the seventh, hada scoring fl y ball and single and Avantre Lesley had an RBI single and scored three runs. Christian Garcia went 3-for-3 and Carlos Garcia went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Pathfi nders offensively. Marc Garcia and Pablo Valdes also drove in runs. Ronald Miller was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Kamal Muhammad was 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Jamiel Robinson had a hit and RBI. With his big day, Smith raised his average to .554 with 28 RBIs. Robinson is now hitting .533 with 27 RBIs and Southall is at .434 with 19 RBIs. Cantwell scored single runs in the third and fi fth innings. League champion Cathedral (22-4, 12-1) routed St. Bernard, Compton standout takes top honors Wave Staff It was easily understandable why El Camino College-Compton Center outfi elder Matthew Young was selected the South Coast Conference most valuable player as well as its offensive player of the year in baseball. After all, the sophomore led the SCC in nine different offensive categories while helping the Tartars tie for second place with East L.A. in the standings. Young’s numbers in conference included a .465 batting average, 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in conference play. For the season, he batted .428 (62-for-145) with three homers, 13 doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs. He also stole 22 bases. Young isn’t the only Tartar represented on the All-SCC fi rst team. First baseman Pascual Garcia (Lynwood High School grad) was also honored after hitting .316 with a homer, seven doubles and 16 RBIs. First-team starting pitchers are Long Beach’s Steven Gallardo, El Camino’s Andrew Pulido, East L.A.’s Chris Reyes, Long Beach’s Omar Jimenez and El Camino’s Alex Mistulof. Gallardo is the SCC pitcher of the year. First-team relief pitchers are El Camino’s Mason Patterson and East L.A.’s Gerardo Arias. Chris Rodriguez of Cerritos is the utility pick, while East L.A.’s Tim Soonthorngarun, L.A. Harbor’s Marc Venning, El Camino’s Peter Ives, East L.A.’s Ruben Ramirez and Harbor’s Carlos Avila are the infi elders. The outfi elders are Hector Gomez of Cerritos, Kyle Demarco of Harbor, Kevin Jones of East L.A. and Joe Lent of Long Beach. ECC-Compton players on the second team are infi elders Joseph Williams and Mark Silva and outfi elder Kyle Gonzaga. Tartars to receive honorable mention were pitcher Aldo Montoya, catcher/pitcher David Rivera and pitcher Tyray Gatewood. East L.A.’s second-teamers are starting pitcher Jose Medina and outfi elder Ricardo Arias. The Husky honorable mentions are shortstop Austin McFarland, third baseman Andy Salcido and designated hitter Manuel Estevez. The SCC’s all-defensive team includes East L.A.’s Martinez at catcher, Cerritos’ Soonthorngarun at fi rst, Compton’s Williams at second, Harbor’s Carlos Avila at shortstop, Harbor’s Venning at third, East L.A.’s Jones, Harbor’s Kris Cayton and Hector Gomez of Cerritos in the outfi eld. Ken Gaylord of SCC champion Cerritos is coach of the year. 13-2 Monday. The Vikings are 11-13, 4-10. In the other Camino Real game Monday, Mary Star routed Bosco Tech, 10-1. Junior Brandon Rea (5-3) struck out eight and walked one in a two-hit complete game effort. Mary Star (15-8, 8-5) scored eight runs in the bottom of the fi fth inning to break the contest open. Chris Alvarez and Marco Armienta had the hits for Bosco Tech (4-19, 1-12). Alvarez drove in the only run.
