12 Leaving A Legacy Tribute to Nathan and Rose L. Fine It is with gratitude that the foundation recognizes the late Rose lillian fine. Rose, who passed away in 2009, arranged for a series of donations and endowment funds to benefit Jewish organizations and omaha’s Jewish community. the decision to establish these funds was made jointly with her husband, nathan, who died many years ago. It was Rose’s desire that the majority of her estate was to go to charity, primarily benefitting Jewish families and children in need. she was pleased that she and nathan were leaving a legacy, including the three foundation endowments established in their names. the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Fund for the Education of students of the Jewish Faith is a new foundation endowment that provides undergraduate and graduate tuition grants to further the education of students of the Jewish faith who are in need of financial assistance, who qualify scholastically and who are residents of the omaha metropolitan area. Preference is given to students who are interested in becoming Jewish communal professionals, such as rabbis, cantors, Jewish educators, or Jewish social or communal workers. Rose’s legacy also includes the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Jewish Family service/tzedakah Endowment Fund. this fund is used to provide food, medication, and other necessities for financially needy Jewish families, as determined by Jewish family service. the third foundation endowment that Rose established is the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Endowed teacher of the Friedel Jewish Academy. the endowment partially supports the salary and benefits of one full-time teacher at friedel, as well as support the educational purposes of the school. B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program the b’nai tzedek teen Philanthropy Program was established in 2009 to provide omaha teens with an opportunity to give tzedakah and deepen their commitment to engaging in Jewish philanthropic activities. founded by the Harold Grinspoon foundation, b’nai tzedek teen programs exist in more than 40 locations across the U.s. and canada. In omaha, teens establish their funds with the foundation by contributing $125 from their bar/bat Mitzvah gifts. the foundation then contributes $375 in order to create a $500 donor-advised fund in each teen’s name. at the end of the school year, the teens allocate a percentage of the account balance to up to two charities of his or her choice. at least one of the charities must be a Jewish organization. this year, 32 of the teens who established teen tzedakah accounts with the foundation selected a wide variety of charities to receive donations from their individual accounts. teens contributed 44% of their dollars to Jewish federation of omaha agencies and local synagogues. 40% of the donations were made to other national and international Jewish non-profits. throughout the year, a number of hands-on educational programs were held for omaha’s Jewish teens. on average, over 70 teens attended each program. the programs aimed to provide leadership skills, teach about charities and build an understanding about philanthropy. this year, the teens collected canned goods for the Jewish family service Pantry, visited Quality living Institute (a non-profit organization in omaha), participated in a scavenger hunt to become acquainted with all of the agencies of the Jewish federation of omaha, and met the founder and ceo of JDub Records (a non-profit organization dedicated to innovative Jewish music and culture), among other activities. Aaron Bisman, the founder and CEO of JDub Records, a non-profit organization, met and spoke with the teens regarding his organization. The allocations process was meaningful and thoughtful. Together 54 checks were written from 32 funds for a total of $1,900.
