Planning for Today,
Building for Tomorrow

2
after seven years under the active leadership of steve bloch, I am humbled and excited to
have assumed the presidency of the Jewish federation of omaha foundation (“foundation”).
Under steve’s leadership, the foundation has grown and become known to many more members
of our community. I decided to accept this important position because the foundation is
essential for maintaining a strong Jewish community in omaha and together, we will make a
difference.
to provide some background information, the foundation, a separate corporate entity from the Jewish
federation of omaha (“federation”), exists to support financial viability of the federation and its agencies. the
mission statement of the foundation is printed on the back page of this report.
the federation as the umbrella organization over the various agencies housed on the Jewish community center
(“Jcc”) campus raises funds annually to operate these agencies, to pay the costs of operating the buildings on the
Jcc campus and to support the overall mission of its umbrella organization, the Jewish federations of north america
(formerly United Jewish communities) in its quest to assist Jews living in Israel and other parts of the world.
How does the foundation support the federation? as our mission states, the foundation exists to establish and
accumulate “enduring assets for permanent funding resources.” the primary type of enduring assets that have been
accumulated in the foundation’s 27 years in business are endowment funds. endowment funds basically are donated
dollars where the amount contributed is kept whole, with the annual income earned spent each year for the specific
purpose that the contributor desired when he or she established the fund. some endowment funds are started when
the donors are still living and some are set up at the donor’s passing as part of an estate plan. the foundation, over
the years, has acquired numerous endowment funds which provide, for example, scholarships for Jewish children,
support for the federation library, activities at the blumkin Home, financial assistance for the needy in the Jewish
community, etc.
In this report on pages six to ten you will see names of the numerous endowment funds that have been established
over the years. We publish these names every year to recognize the generosity of the donors. We salute all these
donors who, besides supporting the federation annual campaign, went a step further by establishing a permanent fund
to support a worthwhile cause on the Jcc campus, thus creating a lasting legacy.
on page 12 of this report you will notice the other types of funds besides endowment funds that our foundation
staff has acquired over its 27 year history.
there are many ways to help insure the future of our Jewish community here in omaha and around the world.
anyone who would like to consider leaving a legacy for the omaha Jewish community should call Marty Ricks at
(402) 334-6440 or me at (402) 496-1616 for a confidential meeting.
sincerely,
Jay noddle
there were many events worthy of note in the year ended June 30, 2010.
a new foundation president, Jay noddle, took office in July 2009. Jay, in the last year,
has been a hands-on leader who runs effective board meetings, is willing to learn every aspect
of foundation involvement and stays committed to helping our foundation fulfill its goal of
insuring the financial viability of our campus.
the Rose blumkin Jewish Home was completed after three and a half years of construction.
our office continues to be actively involved in the accounting for the project as well as the collection of pledges. out of
$16.9 million raised, less than $2 million remains to be collected. We congratulate Jim farber, president of Jewish social
services; Mike silverman, its executive director; Howard Kooper, the major fundraiser and chairman of the project; and
nancy noddle, chairperson of the Interiors committee. What an outstanding facility for our esteemed elderly population!
thanks to the leadership of Janie Murow, we observed a successful start to our b’nai tzedek teen Philanthropy program,
with 32 omaha teens taking part and learning the importance of philanthropy (see page 13 of this Report).
We witnessed a return to profitability after a significant fall in the previous fiscal year. the overall investment portfolio
increased 7.62%. the chicago Pooled endowment Portfolio, which makes up 70% of our assets, increased by 11.18% in
this fiscal year.
We remain confident that the decision to invest a majority of our foundation funds with the Jewish federation of
Metropolitan chicago is a prudent move. We attend their quarterly finance committee meetings by conference call and
ask their chief Investment officer, David R. brief, cfa, to make a personal presentation each year at one of our board
meetings. We regularly monitor their performance in comparison to other alternative cities that are available to us as part of
the national Jewish federation Investment Program.
as of June 30, 2010, our $39 million dollar investment in the chicago Pooled endowment Portfolio was 6.4% of their
total assets of $612 million. Investing with this large pool of money enables us to diversify into asset classes that would not
be available to us if we had continued to invest singly on our own. this is obviously a major investment for our foundation.
If any of you, our constituents, desire to see chicago’s Investment Program overview, I would be pleased to email or send
you a copy. It is very complete and informative.
besides mentioning our new foundation president, I also want to thank him, as well as steve bloch for continued
leadership, and our entire board of Directors, whose pictures are on the back cover. they are an intelligent, creative group
who, in my twelve years at the foundation, have been supportive of me and my staff, and are always ready to consult and
assist where needed.
I also want to recognize our dedicated staff whose pictures are on page 15. laurie Peatrowsky (11 years with the
foundation), Janet Henthorn (six years), and Mary bort (two years) work diligently and efficiently, enabling me to
concentrate on working face to face with our committed donors.
to close on a sad note, the passing of Phil schrager was a loss to our city. Personally I will miss our one-on-one meetings,
which happened three or four times a year. I would leave those meetings inspired by his passion about the importance
of having a strong Jewish community in omaha where our numbers barely make up one percent of the population.
His Jewish heart was not limited to local needs. I recall his speech several years ago given at his home to kick off the
Israel emergency campaign in response to the Hezbollah attacking northern Israel. It was typical Phil, speaking passionately
about the cause and opening his wallet to make the lead gift, thus setting the example for others.
Phil, you are sorely missed. May you rest in peace.
Insuring the Future of the Omaha Jewish Community
Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment
a Perpetual annual campaign endowment (Pace) is a permanent fund dedicated to endowing the Jewish
federation of omaha annual campaign gift. a Pace fund is not intended to take the place of any part of
an annual gift – it is instead a lasting legacy that will continue to make an annual gift to the campaign in
perpetuity on your behalf. You may create your Pace fund through a variety of vehicles, some of which
provide your estate with considerable tax benefits without the requirement that you contribute during your
lifetime. these options allow you to perpetuate your commitment to the annual fund campaign in a way
that best achieves your own personal financial and estate planning goals.
The Lion of Judah Endowment
establishing a lion of Judah endowment (loJe) allows a
woman to endow her gift in perpetuity. through simple,
innovative steps, an endowed gift is within the reach of a lion
of Judah, regardless of her age or giving level. the strength
and vitality of women’s giving continues through the loJe
Leaving A Legacy
Tribute to Nathan and Rose L. Fine
It is with gratitude that the foundation recognizes the late
Rose lillian fine. Rose, who passed away in 2009, arranged
for a series of donations and endowment funds to benefit Jewish
organizations and omaha’s Jewish community. the decision
to establish these funds was made jointly with her husband,
nathan, who died many years ago. It was Rose’s desire that the
majority of her estate was to go to charity, primarily benefitting
Jewish families and children in need. she was pleased that
she and nathan were leaving a legacy, including the three
foundation endowments established in their names.
the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Fund for the
Education of students of the Jewish Faith is a new
foundation endowment that provides undergraduate and graduate
tuition grants to further the education of students of the Jewish faith who are in need of financial assistance,
who qualify scholastically and who are residents of the omaha metropolitan area. Preference is given to
students who are interested in becoming Jewish communal professionals, such as rabbis, cantors, Jewish
educators, or Jewish social or communal workers.
Rose’s legacy also includes the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Jewish Family service/tzedakah
Endowment Fund. this fund is used to provide food, medication, and other necessities for financially
needy Jewish families, as determined by Jewish family service.
the third foundation endowment that Rose established is the Nathan and Rose lillian Fine Endowed
teacher of the Friedel Jewish Academy. the endowment partially supports the salary and benefits of one
full-time teacher at friedel, as well as support the educational purposes of the school.
B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program
the b’nai tzedek teen Philanthropy Program was established in
2009 to provide omaha teens with an opportunity to give tzedakah and
deepen their commitment to engaging in Jewish philanthropic activities.
founded by the Harold Grinspoon foundation, b’nai tzedek teen
programs exist in more than 40 locations across the U.s. and canada. In
omaha, teens establish their funds with the foundation by contributing
$125 from their bar/bat Mitzvah gifts. the foundation then contributes
$375 in order to create a $500 donor-advised fund in each teen’s name. at
the end of the school year, the teens allocate a percentage of the account
balance to up to two charities of his or her choice. at least one of the
charities must be a Jewish organization.
this year, 32 of the teens who established teen tzedakah accounts
with the foundation selected a wide variety of charities to receive
donations from their individual accounts. teens contributed 44% of their
dollars to Jewish federation of omaha agencies and local synagogues.
40% of the donations were made to other national and international
Jewish non-profits.
throughout the year, a number of hands-on educational programs
were held for omaha’s Jewish teens. on average, over 70 teens attended
each program. the programs aimed to provide leadership skills, teach
about charities and build an understanding about philanthropy. this year,
the teens collected canned goods for the Jewish family service Pantry,
visited Quality living Institute (a non-profit organization in omaha),
participated in a scavenger hunt to become acquainted with all of the
agencies of the Jewish federation of omaha, and met the founder and
ceo of JDub Records (a non-profit organization dedicated to innovative
Jewish music and culture), among other activities.
Aaron Bisman, the founder and CEO of JDub Records, a non-profit organization,
met and spoke with the teens regarding his organization.
Hannah Perry, Julia Edelstein, Naomi Zipursky playing cards with
Quality Living Institute residents.
“We are very pleased with the
success of B’nai Tzedek’s
first year of programming.
The allocations process was
meaningful and thoughtful.
Together 54 checks were written
from 32 funds for a total of $1,900.
The teens donated to Jewish
Creating a Legacy
The Foundation offers a number of services
to the Omaha donor community.
Donor-Advised Fund
a separate fund created by a donor (or family) at the
foundation. the donor signs a simple letter agreement and
contributes funds to the foundation. the contribution is
immediately tax deductible. the donor may then advise the
foundation regarding donations which the donor would like
to make from the account. the foundation then makes the
donation in the name of the specific donor-advised fund.
the foundation invests the funds, makes the donations, keeps
the records, reports to the donor and otherwise administers
the fund. Donations can be made to any charitable entity,
including those outside the Jewish community, and anywhere
in the world.
Unrestricted Endowment Fund
a separate endowment created by a donor (or family) at the
foundation, the income of which can be used by the federation
and its agencies for all purposes. the donor signs a simple
letter endowment agreement and contributes funds to the
foundation. the contribution is immediately tax deductible.
the funds are invested by the foundation. Disbursements are
made automatically by the foundation to the federation for its
unrestricted general use.
Restricted Endowment Fund
a separate endowment created by a donor at the foundation,
the income of which can be used by the federation only for
designated purposes or agencies (such as the blumkin Home,
Jewish family service, Kripke library, scholarships). the
donor signs a simple letter endowment agreement (setting
forth the endowment instructions) and contributes funds to the
foundation. the contribution is immediately tax deductible.
the funds are invested by the foundation. Disbursements
are made periodically to the designated agencies or for the
designated purposes upon application to the foundation
consistent with the endowment instructions.
Charitable Remainder Trust
a separate trust created by a donor generally providing for
lifetime income to such donor (and/or spouse), with remainder
interests to the federation and/or certain agencies specified by
the donor. a determined percentage of the funds contributed to
the trust are tax deductible. a corporate trustee holds, invests
and distributes the funds during the life of the donor. after the
donor’s (or spouse’s) passing, the trust assets are distributed as
directed by the donor in the governing trust document.
“The value of a man resides in what
he gives and not what he is capable
of receiving.”
- alBert einstein
Supporting Foundation
Lorraine Reiss and Sylvia Swartz at the
Blumkin Home River City Roundup event.
a separate legal entity (with a separate board) created by
a donor or family, which entity enters into a relationship
with the foundation whereby the foundation manages
and invests such entity’s funds, administers operations
and makes disbursements as directed from time to time
by the supporting foundation board.
PACE/LOJE Fund
a separate endowment created by a donor at the
foundation, the income and/or principal of which is
to be used to fund future contributions to the omaha
Jewish federation annual campaigns. the endowment
need not be funded at inception. Instead, a provision in
the donor’s will, trust agreement, life insurance policy,
IRa account or other deferred account will cause the
endowment to be funded on the donor’s passing. the
real, after-tax cost of establishing such an endowment
upon passing in most cases will be modest in relation to
the significant ongoing benefit to the federation and our
community.

Donor Services
the Jewish federation of omaha foundation adds value to
its donors’ ability to be philanthropic in several important
ways: its knowledge of the omaha Jewish community and
its needs; its expertise in managing investments and working
with donors’ professional advisors; its choice of options to
best respond to a donor’s needs, assets and personal situation;
its partnership with donors to leverage resources to achieve
maximum benefits for the donor and for the community;
and its enduring ability to assure that a donor’s philanthropic
intentions are fulfilled even when the donor is no longer
personally able to do so. the foundation can:
• Assist families with developing an intergenerational
philanthropy mission
• Provide professionally administered donor-advised
fund program
• Offer complete administration of supporting foundations
• Administer and facilitate grants committees
• teach younger generations about the importance
of philanthropy
• Assist Jewish Federation agencies and affiliates
with fundraising projects
• Provide access to additional research through the
