Governor’s Notes
There has definitely been lots going on. Congratulations to all the entrants at
World of Wheels this year! You did the club proud. It takes lots of work to make
this event happen. Thanks everyone.
The DeLongs have had us out and about with our cars to see all kinds of sites and
to just spend time with our friends.
While you’re out and about, don’t forget about the NCCC discounts for members.
There are several places to get products to keep your cars bright and shiny or deck
them out with a special accessory. There is also a 15% discount at Choice Hotels
if you plan to do any traveling this summer. There is a company that offers
NCCC members a 10% discount on helmets. There are many other offers on the
NCCC website
(http://www.corvettesnccc.org/Friends.html) for you to check out.
May is almost here and we will be heading to St. Louis for another Governors’
Meeting. The WR competition season is shaping up with CCC hosting the first
weekend of the year in Lincoln on May 19th and 20th. That is followed by a fun
time in Chariton, IA over Memorial weekend with 3 Rallyes, a People’s Choice
and 11 Low Speeds. June 9 & 10 finds us in Sioux City for 12 Low Speeds. We
end June in Topeka for Convention. How’s that for an action packed couple of
months??
As always we are looking to our great members for coming out and lending a
hand. We especially need workers at convention. You will get a workers pass for
the day you work and you can participate in the People’s Choice, enjoy the hospitality
room and join in the nightly party on the day
you work. You will have to pay for dinner but the rest
of the activities are covered in the worker pass.
Keep ‘em shingin’!
Corvette Esprit de Corps
If you attended the West Region Banquet at Casio’s last month hosted by our Club, you felt
the excitement in the air. Many well-deserving members received awards for club participation
and competition events. Unseen benefits of these awards are the new friends we
make in the six-state region, many of who were at the banquet.
A group spirit and sense of pride was felt as the Chairman of the National Convention discussed
plans for their variety of events planned to peak everyone’s interests. Sign-up sheets
for workers were available as more members made their commitment to attend Convention.
It’s an honor to be a small part of what so many working together can achieve as we share
in our common interest: Fun in our Corvette!
Let’s take the Esprit de Corps to Topeka
and help make this
2012 World of Wheels
The World of Wheels show has come and gone. Cornhusker got a third
place trophy for their efforts and a 100.00 check. I must say I did not
agree with the judges on this one but who am I. I do know one thing
and that is it wasn’t for a lack of effort we had a lot of people come
down to give us a hand setting up the display and tearing it all down.
That is what makes this club so great. I wanted to thank everyone who
came down to support our club. We also had a great turn out Friday
night at the Quaker Steak and Lube and fun was had by all. Now to the
beautiful cars we had in the show this year! Jake & Carol Cartwright
won an Outstanding award for their class with a beautiful 2002 dark
blue coupe. Bob & Kris Speckmann received a Best award for their
class with their beautiful 65 maroon and white coupe. Ron & Liz
Bockerman won a Best award for their class with a very cool yellow 69.
JB & Trudy Benedict received an Outstanding award in their class with
their very Sharp 96 silver coupe. Mike Ratkiewicz received an Outstanding
award in his class with a beautiful 2011 coupe. Ron & Mary
Wolfe received a Best award for their class and a special outstanding
sport compact cash award for their awesome 67 white coupe. Great Job
Ron & Mary! Jerry & Michelle Benedict received an Outstanding
award for their 67 roadster and a special ISCA street achievement
award. So you can see the judges really did like all of our cars. I
wanted to also thank Ron Bockerman for bringing down his Mystery
motor that was very neat and everyone took a second look at that beautiful
piece. All and All I think it was a great show and can’t thank everyone
enough for all their hard work. That’s what makes being a Cornhusker
so great.
NCCC Family Helping Family Program
We would like for this program to be available for use by all NCCC members. If you are
traveling and something would happen to you or your car, wouldn’t it be better to have a fellow
NCCC member to help you out instead of a stranger?
To make this program successful, we will need to enlist your Club and Region’s assistance.
Each Region Executive is asked to forward this information to each of the Governors in
their region to sign up at least two or more club members from each individual club to be on the
contact list. We hope out of each club member that signs up, we would have someone that has
mechanical knowledge, someone with a trailer, someone with a spare bed and if someone
wanted to stop and have a cup of coffee and conversation that we have someone sign up for just
that.
If you decide to sign up, then you have agreed to provide assistance for free, to help out a fellow
NCCC member. You have made a commitment to respond as soon as you can or to find
someone else who can. We don’t want someone to wait for hours just because it may be in the
middle of the night. If it was you that was needing help, you would want someone to respond as
quickly as possible. We would hope that the person receiving assistance would offer some type
of appreciation, maybe help with gas money or even lunch.
This list will not be used for outside Solicitations or Distribution. It is intended to be
used for NCCC member assistance. Please do not use this list to ask about what tires to buy or
if you are looking for a particular part unless you have broken down and this is the kind of assistance
you need. Do not make a mailing list for solicitations or jokes from this list.
Each member of NCCC will be informed on how to access this list by information provided
by their club’s governor. A separate form will be used for you to volunteer and that will
also be place on the NCCC web site. The information you provide will be in a secure nonpublicly
linked area. We ask that the form or information on the form be sent to 3 individuals
who have volunteered to help get this program started. Each of the 3 individuals will have certain
Regions assigned to them and we ask that you submit your information to that individual.
Hal Tumbleson can be reached at e-mail address BusinessManager@corvettesnccc.org
or fax number 719-667-7266 or phone number 719-641-7275. Hal will have the Michigan,
Northwest, Rocky Mountain, Roadrunner, West and West Coast Regions assigned to him.
Douglas McMahan can be reached at e-mail address PublicRelations@corvettesnccc.org
or cell phone number 972-998-1589. Douglas will have the Carolina, Florida, Midwest, Southeast
and Southwest Regions assigned to him.
Ron Ruston can be reached at e-mail address Sergeant-at-Arms@corvettesnccc.org or
phone number 405-348-3545. Ron will have the East, East Ohio, Indiana, Northeast and West
Ohio Regions assigned to him.
Please consider becoming a CCC host for this program. Talk to Gary Brisbois if you are
interested or want additional information. Thanks.
Boys Town Tour
St. Patrick’s Day
March 17, 2012
Thirty CCC members spent 2 hours on Saint Patrick’s Day touring Boys Town, a home
for special boys and girls, founded by Father Flanagan, an Irishman from Ballymoe, Ireland.
After meeting at the Visitors Center, touring the stamp display, and looking at pictures that Bob
and Kris Speckman brought along of a CCC group that toured Boys Town in 1992 the group
was met by two Boys Town students who guided a tour of the campus. They pointed out the
Credit Union, Music Hall, High School, Cafeteria, Career Center and the Palrang Gymnasium.
Upon arriving at the Boys Town Museum the tour guides shared a brief history of how
Boys Town came to be and its original location. As the group proceeded through the museum
the guides explained the displays, pictures, and artifacts that depicted Boys Towns early history.
Next the group walked past the Rose Garden and into the home of the famous Irishman,
Father Flanagan that was decorated like it would have been in the 1940’s. The group was awe
struck by Father Flanagan’s desk, which was made from two hundred fifty thousand pieces of
wood. From there the group walked through the Prayer Garden to Dowd Chapel where Father
Flanagan is entombed.
The tour ended with the group positioning themselves and their corvettes around a Boys
Town statue and taking a group picture.
Road Trip to Treynor Iowa
1 st Road Trip this year
March 31, 2012
Fifty-five CCCer’s and 8 guests dusted off their Corvette’s for a fun filled day of cruising
the hills, and curves of Iowa. It was a warm, 90 degree, sunny day when the thirty eight
beautiful corvettes, loaded with sixty three great people, drove approximately 100 miles, on 2
lane roads to pass thru the cities of Omaha, Nebraska, Council Bluffs, Minneola, Treynor, Oakland,
Hancock, Avoca, and Minden, IA.
Stops were made at the Rose Lodge in Treynor, Iowa to enjoy their finger lickin, good
chicken and then the group was off to Oakland, Iowa to tour their museum of local history.
Some of the locals in Oakland said, “That’s the most corvettes I’ve ever seen!” “What are you
all doing? Are you here for a parade or car show?” From Oakland the group proceeded north
to Avoca. A drive down Avoca’s main street, displayed their updated store fronts and mosaic,
bricked, downtown intersection. Some of the group said, “Avoca looks quite prosperous.” The
group went on to Minden, Iowa and traveled west to reach the Breezy Hills, vineyard and winery.
While traveling on County Road 13 a local young man was out with his video camera capturing
the breathtaking sight of the CCCer’s corvettes as they came over the hill approaching
the winery. Before heading back to Omaha the group enjoyed free samples of Dry, Semi Dry,
Sweet, Semi Sweet and Fruit Wines at Breezy Hill Winery.
If you missed this cruise, you won’t want to miss any of the upcoming cruises. We have
lots more planned, some even on Sunday’s. The next trip will be on April 14 th to Lincoln, NE to
tour the “Museum of Speed”, aka, Speedway Motors. We look forward to seeing you.
C4 Bose Stereo Blues
by Lars Leadfoot
It was a pleasant, sunny Saturday morning. Margo and I had just left a gathering of the
Coffee and Cars group. We were rolling peacefully through the HyVee parking lot listening
to KFAB in my ’91 ZR-1.
Suddenly we heard a horrific high pitched screeching noise coming from the driver’s side of
the cockpit. It sounded like a binding speedometer cable, but of course there is no speedometer
cable in a ’91 Vette, and the sound continued unabated after I stopped. Panic was
setting in when I played a hunch and turned off the radio. … dead silence ... Voila, I knew
the problem! The Bose stereo system had crumped!
I decided to research the Corvette Bose stereo system. I found a ton of information on the
Internet. Bose uses a distributed system: a stereo unit in the instrument panel, two speaker/
amplifier enclosures in the front, and two more speaker/amplifier enclosures in the back.
There is also a CDM box (tuner/receiver) somewhere in the car. The layout varies from
model year to model year, and the system is upgraded every few years.
Bose systems are highly controversial. Advocates endorse them enthusiastically, but critics
hate them with a purple passion. One objection is that Bose, unlike the aftermarket suppliers,
customizes its system for each application and refuses to publish detailed specifications.
I thought about consulting an audio shop, but I knew they would tell me that the Bose is
crap and I should rip it out and replace it with their whizbang aftermarket system with
bright blue display and enough bass to rattle the windows. Cost aside, I didn’t like the
thought of an installer crawling around on my leather bucket seats, cutting holes in my door
panels, and splicing my cables.
A few companies claim they have equivalent replacement components (more or less) for
Bose systems. But I found one outfit that specializes in actually fixing and testing the original
parts: Factory Car Stereo Repair, Inc. in Longwood, FL. I called FCSR and talked to a
technician. He asked a few questions and then diagnosed my problem. The filter capacitor
in the amplifier in the front speaker enclosure on the driver’s side had failed. It is a well
known problem, and the filter caps in all four speaker enclosures will eventually fail. He
suggested I remove all four amplifiers and send them to Florida for repair and testing. I ran
all this by Rich Cerveny at C&S Motorsports, and he confirmed it.
Page 20
There is a bunch of good information about Bose stereo systems on the Factory Car Stereo
Repair, Inc. (FCSR) Web site. The best part is that you can download detailed step-by-step
removal instructions complete with color photos for a few bucks. (FCSR accepts PayPal.)
Go to carstereohelp.net and click “Car Stereo Removal.” Select “Corvette” and the model
year.
The four amplifiers are screwed into molded plastic speaker enclosures. The rear enclosures
are obviously located beneath the speaker grilles in the luggage area. Removal is
fairly straightforward, but some of the mounting screws are deeply buried beneath the carpet.
I expected the front speakers to be under the dash or in the doors. But on the ’91-96
Vette, they are inside carpeted housings on the floor next to the frame siderails. The trim on
the door sills has to come off, but you don’t have to get into the doors or under the dash
(yet!).
The plastic enclosures are fragile, and the mounting tabs are easily broken in shipment (or
during installation for that matter!). The FCSR technician instructed me to remove the amplifiers
from the speaker enclosures for shipment. I labeled each amplifier (left front, right
front, etc.) as I removed it, and I segregated all the mounting screws in labeled jars to ensure
proper reassembly.
When I called FCSR to place the repair order, the technician laid a real zinger on me. He
informed me that the CDM box also contains the infamous filter capacitor, and he strongly
recommended having it upgraded too. I studied the assembly diagrams in the 1991 Corvette
Service Manual, and I discovered that the CDM box is located on the passenger side bolted
in place by the speed control behind the glove box. It’s almost as if GM built the whole car
around it! [It was relocated in later model Vettes with passenger side air bags.] I could
only imagine the chaos I could cause if I went poking around in the maze of cables and connectors
up there while lying in a twisted heap on my backside.
I realized it was time to get professional assistance. I explained my dilemma to Tom Van-
Vugt at C&S Dyno Shop, and he assured me that he could perform the removal and replacement
of the CDM box. It is a bit tricky, but he had done it numerous times before. I hired
him for the job.
I shipped the amplifiers and the CDM box to FCSR. I packed everything carefully, insured
the parcel, and crossed my fingers. FCSR repairs virtually all Bose models, but since there
are so many, they don’t generally stock them. A lost or damaged shipment might have been
disastrous.
The upgraded components came back in a few days. C&S installed the CDM, and I put
everything else back together over the next couple weeks. One word of caution. The courtesy
light under the dash on the passenger side is the high tech type that looks like a fuse.
DON’T TOUCH IT! A little oil on the glass, and the lamp will burn out immediately! I
turned on the radio, and it worked. Mission accomplished!
INSURANCE COVERAGE
The Corvette Driving Season is here and one of the benefits of belonging to NCCC is the
liability insurance. The NCCC has contracted with Philadelphia Insurance through the Legacy
Insurance Network as the agents. Liability insurance provides coverage for damages in
case of a spectator’s bodily injury or property damage that is caused by a member or participants.
The coverage provided by Philadelphia is contingent upon having a signed waiver &
release form that was completed before the start of the event.
The NCCC policy provides protection for caravan / tours and other social events provided
these events are sponsored by the club and the event is “Published to the Public” (IE. Websites,
newsletter, written meeting announcement, etc…).
Folks usually think of insurance for racing events. After all that is the most dangerous thing
we do, right? Not all accidents are related to speed events. In fact, because of the controls
and risk management provided at speed events by the track organizers, it actually makes
them very safe for everyone involved. In contrast, parades, car shows and concourses have
their own dangers. In such events, spectators and other competitors are encouraged to view
participating vehicles. Many of the products used on tires like silicon tire shine can cause
very slippery conditions that may cause slips and falls. Should a spectator fall and injure
themselves, they are covered by the NCCC policy. Also, if a chair or canopy is knocked
into a car by the wind, it is covered by the NCCC policy.
There is a FAQ page that covers many insurance questions on the NCCC website (http://
www.corvettesnccc.org/Insurance/insurance_bblin_faq.pdf) if you want to check it out.
Also, ask your governor, Gary Brisbois, the WR RE, Jon Manz, the WR RCD, Jerry Koraleski
or the NCCC Secretary, Kathy Brisbois if you have a specific question. You have a lot
of resources here.
Have fun and please sign those waivers when asked.
From the Editor:
THANKS to everyone who contributed to this month’s newsletter.
You are what makes this fun to read.
This is a great group of people and you all have something interesting
to share. Please send me any pictures you take at club
functions to share in the newsletter.
