Katie Sainz (Oni's Marketing Manager): How did Jonna and the
Unpossible Monsters come to be?
Chris Samnee: This story, or parts of it, had been rattling around
in my head for years. I’d come up with good bits and tell them to
our daughters at bedtime, since they’re always the first audience
with this stuff, but Laura has managed to help steer this into
being an actual story with emotion, and depth, and so much more
than just a monster punch-‘em-up. There have been multiple
times I’ve written us into a corner, and she always manages to
find a way to make it better than what I started with.
Laura Samnee: Yeah, Jonna really started as Chris's thing! I
watched him poke around on it for years; he'd show me a design
or he would tell me something about the story. When it was time
to put the pitch together, I was helping him lay out the beats, and
we found that soon I was contributing story and character ideas
to really flesh things out, so it just evolved into us cowriting. We
are used to doing things as a team, and writing Jonna together
really felt like a natural extension of how we already work.
KS: Jonna, the younger of the sisters, is fearless and gifted with
the ability to deliver monster-crushing punches! Without spoiling
anything, can you tell us more about her ability?
LS: Well, we can say that she certainly has a superhuman
strength and is uniquely suited to fight these giant monsters.
How she ended up with those abilities will eventually be revealed!
KS: Tell us more about the monster-filled world this book is set in!
Do you have any favorite monster creations?
CS: The impetus of this series was getting to do for a living what I
grew up doing for fun—something I’ve done surprisingly little of in
superhero comics—draw monsters!
It’s hard to pick a favorite, as I tried to give each one something
that’d make me excited to put them on the page. Each of the
monsters is based on a real animal and is then twisted and
contorted and combined with other animal bits until we have
our monster.
If you were to twist my arm to pick a favorite monster, I’d probably
go with the one I’ve just been calling Red, the first “Unpossible”
monster we see in issue #1. Its design takes cues from Hanna
Barbera-style pterodactyls and one particularly unappealing
chicken that my parents had when I was a kid—but with a beak
full of sharp teeth!
