Celebrating your support

over the past 40 years

In 1981 a steering committee

of local people was set up to

develop the idea of a hospice

and to raise the funds to make

this a reality. Their vision was a

world in which no-one should

die alone, afraid, or in pain.

Over the last 40 years, your generous

support has seen St Wilfrid’s grow

from small beginnings with day care

and community nursing, through

the original six bedded unit at Mill

Gap Road, to the current hospice

in Hampden Park which cares for

over 2,200 people each year. In

2021, patients are cared for in the

community and through our 20

bedded Inpatient Unit and Wellbeing

To this day, the kind

support of people

like you funds over

70% of our care for

patients and families

services. We also provide direct

support to carers. To this day, the

kind support of people like you funds

over 70% of our care for patients

and families.

2020 has been a tough year for the

hospice. Demand for our care has

increased in the wake of the Covid-19

pandemic at the same time our

income has been hit by shop closures

and restrictions on event fundraising.

We hope that, with your help, we can

raise the funds that we need to keep

going for the next 40 years, helping

people in our local community to live

well until the end of their lives.

Do you have a memory

of St Wilfrid’s to share?

A special moment at the hospice

with your family? Your first day as

a volunteer? A photograph from

the early days of the hospice or a

memorable fundraising event?

Most local people will have been

touched by St Wilfrid’s at some point

in their lives, whether through care

for themselves, a family member,

colleague or loved one, and we

would love to hear your stories.

Email hospice@stwhospice.org or

share on the St Wilfrid’s Community

Facebook page and your own

social media using the hashtag

#stwilfridsmemories.

We will be sharing these stories and

the stories of all those who support

us throughout our anniversary

year via our partnership with

the Eastbourne Herald, through

hospice publications and social

media and through a special

commemorative book which will

be published at the end of 2021.

Brewers Decorator Centres

supporting St Wilfrid’s

Neal Brewer, Director, told us:

‘I have been a supporter of St Wilfrid’s

since they looked after my dad at Mill

Gap Road. The rambling Victorian

building with its dark oak panelling

was very different from the light and

modern surroundings at Hampden

Park, but the care and compassion

shown by the fantastic staff remains

the same. They looked after my dad

so well, and it was possible for him

to come home at the end, something

that wouldn’t have been possible

without the support of the hospice.’

Brewers has a long history of giving

back to the local community. Neal

was part of a team which cycled the

South Downs Way from Winchester

to Beachy Head for the hospice

in 2017, completing the distance

despite one of the team suffering a

broken collar bone! Staff have taken

part in lots of St Wilfrid’s events

over the years including Pancake

Races and Christmas Jumper Days

and has also supported St Wilfrid’s

Moy Avenue superstore through

donations of decorating supplies.

John Ashton, Marketing Director

at Brewers, remembered being a

‘Social Commando’ at St Wilfrid’s

in the Mill Gap Road Days:

‘We could choose between

the college cadet forces

or providing company and

support for patients. We

really enjoyed talking to the

patients and they all seemed

to enjoy the interaction with

the young people.’

Brewers has a long

history of giving

back to the local

community

Most recently Brewers has been

proud to support the hospice ‘Closer

to You’ campaign by helping to

fund Community Nurses to reach

more people and make care more

accessible to people in rural areas,

and those who might find it harder

to travel to the hospice. Neal said:

‘I know that the need for end of life

care is increasing and that the current

Covid-19 pandemic has made it even

harder for some patients who may be

increasingly isolated.

‘Recent events have made us all

realise the importance of “loving

where you live” and supporting and

protecting your local community.

St Wilfrid’s is part of the community

and most people in the area will

have experienced its care in some

way. We hope that supporting the

Ruby Anniversary campaign will help

them to continue their work in the

future. It’s great that our support

makes it possible for the hospice to

reach more people. We are looking

forward to joining in with the ‘Paint

the town red’ celebration and also

hope to repeat our cycling exploits

by taking part in the hospice 40 th

anniversary Wilfride.’

The difference your Ruby

It makes us happy to

know we are doing

our bit to ensure that other

families continue to have

access to the same wonderful

care my dad received

Become a Friend for Life

for St Wilfrid’s

A regular monthly donation of just £4 will help

provide a stable monthly income so that the hospice

can plan future patient care. The recent pandemic,

which has disrupted our events and retail fundraising,

has shown just how important this steady income is

to the future of the hospice. Every donation, large or

small, makes an enormous difference to local people

when they need it most. Just complete the form

attached or go to stwhospice.org/friendforlife

‘My dad was looked after by the hospice

and my husband Rob’s company – GPB

Construction, now sponsors a Nurse

with an annual donation. It makes us

happy to know we’re doing our bit to

contribute and ensure other families

continue to have access to the same

wonderful care my dad received.’

Naomi Green

Sponsor a day of care for a

patient as a Ruby Sponsor

Each day of care costs £400 and,

thanks to your kind donation, you

will know that on a special day

of your choice, a patient at the

hospice will be receiving expert

care and comfort, including

nursing, therapies, medical care

and meals. Make your donation

on the form attached or go to

stwhospice.org/rubysponsor

‘I am sponsoring the 23 rd October

which was my dad’s birthday. Dad,

Norman Burton, died at home back

in 1979 and hospice care wasn’t

available then. I know that he would

be happy to know with how much

love he is remembered, and that this

donation will help ensure that another

patient is peaceful and pain free.’

Unit, Community, and Patient

and Family Support Services.

A gift in your Will can help St Wilfrid’s

to support local people for the next 40

years, and into the future. You know that

your gift will help to ensure that no-one

dies, alone, afraid or in pain, and that the

memory of you and your loved ones lives

on into the future.

A legacy in memory

of a child helped

care for others in

the future

Ron and his wife Lily gave a gift of

£100,000 in their will 10 years ago

after they experienced, first hand,

the care that Nurses give to patients

and their families. They were with

their wonderful daughter, and only

child, Lyn, when she died from cancer

at the old hospice in Mill Gap Road.

They decided that in memory of their

child, they would leave half of their

estate to the hospice.

That £100,000 was invested into our

Community Nursing team, helping

to convert the accommodation that

was available to the team and to

provide extra nursing care. Today,

the team visits and cares for so many

more people than they we were able

to see in 2010. Last year, this was

over 5,300 visits.

Her wish was to

be able to stay at

home and that

was only made

possible by the

staff at St Wilfrid’s

Elizabeth and Ray

A gift in your will could support

St Wilfrid’s just as Elizabeth’s has

Very recently St Wilfrid’s

received a £25,000 gift

from Elizabeth who died on

Christmas Day last year.

Ray, Elizabeth’s husband

explained: ‘I first met Liz in 2008,

quite by chance. I had been a

widower since 2000; my first wife

had had cancer three times during

our time together. I had been

looking after my uncle who was a

neighbour of Liz and he asked me

to do a few jobs for her.

‘During that period Liz had several

illnesses, the worst being PBC – a

serious liver disease. I did jobs for

her and we just clicked, started

going out and eventually fell in

love. We moved in together, later

retired to Seaford and married

in 2012. The PBC progressed into

liver cancer and despite several

bouts of chemo we knew she

wouldn’t recover.

‘Her wish was to be able to stay

at home and that was only made

possible by the staff at St Wilfrid’s.

Without their support we would not

have been able to cope and she

died peacefully in her own bed. I

can’t thank St Wilfrid’s enough.’

The gift in Elizabeth’s will was

because she also wanted to

give back to the future. In these

unprecedented times we are

able to use this wonderful gift to

support the salary of a Nurse that

is so vitally needed, as our patient

numbers grow.
