FOREWORD
HELLO
I want to welcome you to New Birth; I believe this is the most alive, loving, spirit-filled, and socially
impactful Church ever! I truly am humbled to serve as your lead Pastor, and I want you to know,
before we go any further, that YOU BELONG HERE! The Apostle Paul put it this way: “Now, therefore,
you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but are fellow citizens with the saints and members of
the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). Welcome to the family. Don’t think it strange if people call
you brother or sister; they are just excited to meet distant relatives. New Birth is an active church
committed to showing the Love of Christ through community engagement, spiritual development,
holistic programming. We believe God has placed us New Birth here to Represent _____________. Impact
_________________. Change _______________.
As a newcomer or even a new believer of Jesus Christ, you may ask yourself, what is the New Birth
Culture Code?
It is an exciting 90-day orientation experience guaranteed to grow your faith in God, help you see how
God has given you strengths, gifts, and talents to significantly impact your sphere of influence, and get
you involved to help make a difference. Our goal is to provide you with a brief overview of our history,
beliefs, our vision, and a little about our organizational structure.
As you go through our Culture Code Experience, please keep a few things in mind. Our time together
will provide a glimpse of who we are, but through your intentional engagement in the life of our
Church, anyone can truly know us. We love you, and we know God has a purpose for your life. We are
more committed to your future in Christ than we are concerned about the missteps of your past.
You will be assigned a Culture Code Concierge member to assist if you have any questions about the
ministry, leadership info, prayer, and the like. They are not here to hover but to serve as support if
needed during your first 90-days. We aim to ensure your spiritual and social experience at New Birth
is welcoming and filled with love.
Sincerely, I pray that you will open your heart during this 90-period to hear God’s voice and get
involved. I encourage you to remain committed because, after the next 90-days, I declare the benefits
of God in every area of your life.
Again, welcome to the Family of New Birth and the Kingdom of God.

CHURCH HISTORY
In 1939, a group of Christians founded a new
church in Scottsdale, Georgia - Travelers Rest
Baptist Church, a name inspired by the fact
that members traveled to various places for
worship before constructing their first church
building.
1939 – 1981, membership grew under four
pastors’ leadership: the Reverend Hezekiah E.
Smith, the Reverend Theodore R. Smith, the
Reverend Eugene Bryant Reverend Chester L.
Carter.
1987-2017, Bishop Eddie Long is appointed
Senior Pastor, and Church relocates in 1991
to a new sanctuary and grows to one of the
leading churches in the nation.
2017, Bishop Eddie Long transitioned at 63
years old to be with our Heavenly Father.
2020, Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant appointed
Lead Pastor of New Birth Church.
1982, the Reverend Kenneth Samuel and a
group of Deacons began looking for a new
church to accommodate the growth.
1984, the Travelers Rest congregation
relocated to Snapfinger Road in Decatur,
Georgia, with nearly 150 people and became
“New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.”

Recognized as a prolific orator,
exceptional visionary, philanthropist,
proponent of social justice, and a
trailblazer in every sense of the
word, Dr. Bryant embodies the
mission that guides his life: To
change the world with the word.
The global outreach of his work as
a pastor, community activist, and
businessman spans over 20 years. Dr.
Bryant’s notable accomplishments
highlight his conscious effort to
develop strong leaders, empower
the economically disadvantaged,
challenge social injustices and
spread the gospel. Dr. Bryant is not
only known as a riveting speaker but
has earned a reputation as a social
justice activist.
A third-generation minister, Dr.
Bryant possesses an undeniable
gift to bridge generations from the
Civil Rights movement to the Black
Lives Matter era. His ability to reach
across social, economic, and political
barriers has inspired people to
succeed in their everyday lives, but
more importantly, to experience the
life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ.
While many would foresee a bleak
future for a young man who failed
the eleventh grade and dropped
out of High School, Dr. Bryant’s
personal story of resilience and
discipline propelled him over
the roadblocks and through an
impressive educational journey.
After attaining his G.E.D, Dr. Bryant
earned his Bachelor’s Degree in
Political Science and International
Studies from Morehouse College in
Atlanta, Georgia. He later went to
acquire a Master of Divinity Degree
from Duke University and in 2005
was awarded an honorary Doctorate
of Ministry Degree from the
Graduate Theological Foundation in
Mishawaka, Indiana, while attending
the world-renowned University of
Oxford in Great Britain.
Accepting the call God placed on
his life to birth something new,
Dr. Bryant became the Pastor and
Founder of Empowerment Temple
AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland,
at the age of 29. Acclaimed as the
fastest-growing African Methodist
church in the denomination’s 200-
year history, the congregation grew
from 43 members who started in
Bryant’s home in 2000 to more than
10,000 parishioners who remain
prominent in the city. Adding to
his span-both then and now- are
the growing numbers of believers
reached through streaming
broadcasts, his expanding social
media networks, and Power to the
People, a weekly live broadcast on
The Word Network.
Dr. Bryant’s charismatic personality
and business acumen have also
placed him in front of leaders both
inside corporate and non-profit
board rooms. His diverse portfolio
of clients, sponsors, and consultants
have allowed him to develop strong
alliances with retailers such as
Walmart, Burlington, and Dunkin
Donuts franchises. In addition, Dr.
Bryant has fostered long-term
relationships with top executives
at Radio One Inc., TV One, BET,
The Ray Lewis Foundation, Rush
Philanthropic Arts Foundation, the
Association of Black Cardiologists,
Clear Channel, and others.
A man with a global mission, Dr.
Bryant has been referred to as the
21st Century Fredrick Douglass.
Whether hosting a fireside chat with
grassroots leaders or responding
to a crisis at a press conference, he
is equipped to impact the Body of
Christ positively. He follows in the
giant footsteps of the late visionary
Bishop Eddie L. Long, who answered
the call to break religious traditions
and preach the unadulterated word
of God in his role as New Birth’s
Senior Pastor for thirty years.
His leadership efforts have already
begun to strengthen the multigenerational
bond among members,
expand outreach, cultivate families,
and continue the Church’s solid
legacy of cultural significance and
community involvement. His prayer
every day is “Lord, Your Will, nothing
more, nothing less and nothing
else!”

DISCOVERING
YOUR DISPOSITION
Disposition refers to your PERSONALITY & TEMPERAMENT ____________________ ______________________.
Our approach to life (disposition) can be determined from two basic things: what we say and what we do.
WHAT WE SAY – “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34 NKJV)
People naturally talk about what they are most interested in, and if you listen carefully, you find two broad but distinct areas of
subject matter.
_________________________ CONCRETE GUARDIANS __________________________people talk primarily about the world of everyday
reality - facts and figures, work and play, home and family, news, sports and weather - all the who, what, when, where, and how
much of life. They focus on facts.
_________________________ ABSTRACT IDEALIST __________________________people talk primarily about the world of ideas - theories
and conjectures, dreams and philosophies, beliefs and fantasies - all the why’s, if’s, and what-might-be’s of life. They focus on
ideas.
WHAT WE DO – “Even a child is known by his deeds, whether what he does is pure and right.” (Proverbs 20:11 NKJV)
Everyone is trying to accomplish their goals, and if you watch closely how people go about their business, you see that there
are two fundamentally opposite types of actions.
_________________________ UTILITARIAN ARTISANS __________________________people act primarily in a pragmatic way, that is, they
do what gets results. Only afterwards do they check to see if they are observing the rules or going through proper channels.
Results People instinctively do what works
_________________________ UTILITARIAN RATIONAL __________________________people act primarily in a cooperative or socially
acceptable manner and follow agreed upon social rules. Only later do they concern themselves with the effectiveness of their
actions. Relational People do what’s correct.
DISPOSITION ASSESSMENT TOOL
INSTRUCTIONS: Listed on the next page are a number of questions that deal with different personality “preferences.”
Both answers have their strengths and are equally valuable within the body of Christ. Neither one is better or worse than
another.
QUESTIONS: Read each statement. Determine which statement best describes you, even if it is just a little better.
Place an “x” in column A or B depending on which statement you chose.
At the end of each section, total the number of answers in each column.
HINT: Try to answer true to who you are and not as who you hope or want to be. We are looking for your natural
tendencies, not necessarily your experiences. Your first answer is usually your best – don’t over think the statements. Go
with your thought!

they can keep an eye on and take good care of, and they’re careful to obey the laws, follow the rules, and respect
the rights of others.
Guardians are the cornerstones of society, for they are the temperament given to serving and preserving our most
important social institutions. Guardians have natural talent in managing goods and services - from supervision
to maintenance and supply - and they use all their skills to keep things running smoothly in their families,
communities, schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses.
ALL GUARDIANS SHARE THE FOLLOWING CORE CHARACTERISTICS:

they can get their hands on, and they will do whatever works, whatever gives them a quick, effective payoff, even if
they have to bend the rules.
Artisans are the temperament with a natural ability to excel in any of the arts, not only the fine arts such as
painting and sculpting, or the performing arts such as music, theater, and dance, but also the athletic, military,

and how they can become their best. This quest for knowledge and improvement drives their imagination. And
they want to help others make the journey. Idealists are naturally drawn to working with people, and whether

RATIONALISTS
As Possibility Based and Results Focused, Rationalists speak mostly of what new problems intrigue them and what
new solutions they envision, and always pragmatic, they act as efficiently as possible to achieve their objectives,
ignoring arbitrary rules and conventions if need be.

systems that make up the world around us. Rationalists might tackle problems in organic systems such as plants
and animals, or in mechanical systems such as railroads and computers, or in social systems such as families and

EMOTIONAL
MATURITY
Emotional Maturity refers to how you RESPOND to situations and manage your EMOTIONS.
Maturity is a whole emotional life that has grown out of a fully developed understanding of
who you are as a child of God, created in His image.
• It is the shalom of the Old Testament.
• It is the freedom that is experienced from knowing the truth (John 8:32).
• It is the fruit of the Spirit in your life (Galataians 5:22).
• It is love abounding in knowledge and all discernment (Philippians 1:9).
• It is the joy inexpressible and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8).
• It is the peace of God that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).
You will now take an emotional maturity assessment.

1. 1. Understanding our own FEELINGS_______________________________(self-awareness)
2. 2. Managing our own EMOTIONS/ANXIETY _______________________________(self-regulation)
3. 3. Understanding the needs _______________________________of others_______________________________(social
awareness)
4. 4. Managing our conflicts _______________________________with others _______________________________(relationship
management)
MOVING TOWARDS MATURITY
Your Emotional Maturity can improve and grow.
But you need to have a strategy for improving. Emotional maturity does not improve over night.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction
in righteousness, that the man of
God may be complete (mature), thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV)
“Solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” (Hebrews
5:14 NASB) “But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete (mature), lacking nothing.”
(James 1:4NKJV)
NOTES
EMOTIONAL GROWTH
PATHWAY TOWARDS EMOTIONAL MATURITY:
“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in
Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful
lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to
God, in true righteousness and holiness”. (Ephesians 4:20-24 NKJV)
• Learn Christ: Self-awareness comes from GOD.
Emotional Awareness (Proverbs 2:2) • Accurate Self-Assessment (1 Corinthians 11:31) • “In Christ”
Confidence (2 Corinthians 3:4)
• Put off the old man: Self-regulation comes through the Holy Spirit.
Self-Control (Galatians 5:23) • Conscientiousness (Galatians 5:22) • Innovation and Adaptability

WHAT
WE
BELIEVE
I. The Holy Scriptures
NEW BIRTH ORIENTATION GUIDE
We believe that the Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God and is without error in the original
manuscripts. Through God’s sovereign hand, the Scriptures have been preserved and are the supreme and
final authority. The Bible, being the revealed Word of God, is the ground and foundation from which all
truth claims shall be substantiated. It is the only infallible rule of faith and conduct for all Believers (II
Timothy 3:15-17; II Peter 1:20-21; Hebrews 4:12).
God said it! We believe it! That settles it! Amen!

The Triune God
a. The Doctrine of the Trinity
Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God . . .” The word ‘God’ denotes “self-existing one or self-sufficient one”
and describes a being that needed nothing and no one to exist. This totally independent God existed
before all things.
We understand the Triune Godhead as One God existing eternally in three (3) distinct Persons, yet one
divine essence, all equal and worthy of the same worship and obedience. The idea of the Trinity is a
mystery not fully comprehended by the human mind.
The difficulty lies in the inability of our finite minds to comprehend an infinite God.
Although the Bible never uses the words ‘Trinity’ or ‘Triune God,’ there are numerous scriptural references to
the distinct working of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; Luke 1:35. ; II Corinthians
13:14; Colossians 1:16, 2:9). Each member of the Trinity has a distinct role God as Father and Creator, Jesus
as Son and Savior of humanity, and the Holy Spirit as essential to the work of salvation and the carrying out
of the will of God through mankind.

III.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
a. God (God the Father)
God’s word teaches that God is the Creator of all that exists (Genesis 1:1-31, 2:4; Isaiah 40:28; Malachi 2:10;
Acts 17:24-28). “God” is not a name but rather a description of a character; therefore, because of Who He is,
He alone qualifies for the title of God.
In His nature, He is perfect (Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 18:30; Matthew 5:48); He is Omnipotent (allpowerful);
Omniscient (all-knowing and all-wise); and Omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time).
Some of the revealed knowledge of His character says that He is holy, righteous, unable to lie, unable to
tolerate sin, but also good, gracious, full of mercy, kind, patient, faithful, and unchanging.
In Hebrew, His various names also reveal His character. In Exodus 3:14, Ehyeh asher ehyeh literally
translates as “I Will Be What I Will Be,” also interpreted as “My actions reveal my My character.”
b. Jesus (God the Son)
The Word of God teaches that Jesus, the Christ, is the Son of God who, through His perfect life and sacrificial
death, atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him alone for salvation.
He willingly submitted to the incarnation, was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, was buried
and resurrected, and ascended to the Father in Heaven. His finished work at Calvary is the only means of
salvation and the restoration of relationship back to the Father.
c. Holy Spirit (God the Holy Spirit)
The Word of God teaches that the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity who possesses attributes of
full personhood and shares in all the divine attributes of both the Father and the Son.
We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells, instructs, comforts assures, identifies, and empowers all Believers.
The work of the Holy Spirit is essential to our salvation. At salvation, the Holy Spirit baptizes the Believer
into the body of Christ and seals the salvation for all eternity. The Holy Spirit is also the giver of spiritual
gifts that enable us to live effective and purpose-filled lives. First Corinthians 12:11 says the Holy Spirit
distributes His gifts individually as He wills, but that they are for the benefit of all. The apostle Paul
encourages Believers to seek or desire spiritual gifts (see I Cor.14:1).
We believe in and embrace the biblical operation of all spiritual gifts listed in Scripture (I Cor. 12) as the
normal and healthy operation of the Spirit of God in our midst. There are often biblical guidelines for how
and when these gifts operate. We believe in exercising all gifts, including the private and public operation
of speaking in tongues.
We believe that every born-again Believer should pray to receive the filling of the Holy Spirit, with the
evidence of speaking in tongues. The heavenly prayer language of tongues is available, and we believe,
necessary to all Believers. It is the weapon of our warfare (II Corinthians 10:4), and it enables us to stand
against all the fiery darts of the enemy (Ephesians 6:16).

IV.
Humanity
We believe that man is the direct creation of God’s body, soul, and spirit. Therefore, man is not in any
way a result of evolution but is made in God’s image. Adam’s sin and fall resulted in the fall of creation
and mankind, both physically and spiritually (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:10-23, 5:12, 8:18-23). We were
eternally lost and destined for eternal separation from the presence of God. Romans 5:12 says, “…through
one man sin entered the world, and death through sin…spread to all men, because all sinned.” We are born
with a sinful nature that must be regenerated so that we can respond to God in faith.
V. Salvation
We believe that all who in faith, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior are born again by the Holy
Spirit and thus become the children of God. Salvation involves redemption, regeneration, sanctification
and glorification (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 10:9-10, 5:7-11; Colossians 1:13-14, 21-22; John 17:16-22; II
Corinthians 5:17; I Corinthians 6:19).

The Church
We believe in the Holy Christian Church, imperfectly represented on earth, as a local body of Believers, with
Christ as their Head and the Holy Spirit as their Guide. (Matthew 28:16-20; Acts 1:6-8; Ephesians 1:22-23).
We believe that the local Church is to be governed and directed by Jesus’ sovereign gifts to the Church
and through the “set” ministry in the form of bishops and pastors, aided in the work of the ministry by
elders, ministers and deacons (Jeremiah 3:15; Acts 6:1-6, 20:28; I Corinthians 12:12-14; II Corinthians 6:4; I
Timothy 3:1-7).

Ordinances of Baptism and Communion
Ordinances: We believe that the local Church should observe two ordinances. When we speak of Christian
Ordinance, we speak of the two practices Jesus established for the Church: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
(also known as Holy Communion).
a. What is Baptism?
Very simply, baptism is an outward testimony of the inward change in a believer’s life. Christian baptism is
an act of obedience to the Lord after salvation; although baptism is closely associated with salvation, it is
not a requirement to be saved.
Christian baptism is the means by which a person makes a public profession of faith and discipleship. In
the waters of baptism, a person says (wordlessly, by the act of surrender), “I confess faith in Christ; Jesus has
cleansed my soul from sin, and I now have a new life of sanctification.”
Christian baptism illustrates, in dramatic style, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. At the same
time, it also illustrates our death to sin and new life in Christ. As the sinner confesses the Lord Jesus,
he dies to sin (Romans 6:11) and is raised to a brand-new life (Colossians 2:12). Being submerged in the
water represents death to sin, and emerging from the water represents the cleansed, holy life that follows
salvation. Romans 6:4 (NIV) states it this way: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into
death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live
a new life.”
b. What is Communion?
The Holy Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper, represents the greatest expression of God’s love
for His people. On the night that He was betrayed, Jesus ate His last supper with His disciples. Knowing
what He would accomplish through His sacrifice, He instituted the Holy Communion (Luke 22:19–20; I
Corinthians 11:24–25).
Two items are used in the Holy Communion the bread, which represents Jesus’ body, which was scourged
and broken before and during His crucifixion, and the cup, which represents His shed blood. In Luke 22:20,
Jesus tells us that the cup is the “new covenant in My blood,” and the apostle Paul tells us that the blood of
Jesus brings forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14; Ephesians 1:7).
His loving instruction is that we are to remember Him as we partake of the Holy Communion. Jesus wants
us conscious of how His body was broken for our wholeness, and His blood was shed for the forgiveness
of our sins. And whenever we partake in this consciousness, we “proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes” (I
Corinthians 11:26).

VIII.
The Kingdom of God
a. What is the Kingdom?
The Word of God teaches that God’s sovereign rule and Kingdom ever was, now is, and is yet to come. The
Bible presents the Kingdom of God as the center point of all God’s sovereign work in human history, and it
is the central message of Christ.
The Kingdom is about the King and His domain, His rule and His way of doing things (Exodus 19:6; Psalm
22:22-28, 103:19).
According to Jesus, the Kingdom of God is within or among people (Luke 17:20-21); it is approached
through understanding (Mark 12:34); and entered through acceptance like a child (Mark 10:15), spiritual
rebirth (John 3:5), and doing the will of God (Matthew 7:21). It is a kingdom that will be inherited by the
righteous (I Corinthians 6:9-10).
The Church, the called out ones of Jesus Christ, are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation
called to declare His praises in a dark world (see I Peter 2:9).
When we live according to Kingdom principles, it becomes our one and only pursuit because all else
(everything) is provided when we have the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33).
According to the New Testament, the Church is NOT the Kingdom, but is to be the training ground for how
to operate in the Kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19); it is to train us to use our Kingdom authority (Ephesians
1:20-23), and to serve as an embassy of the Kingdom to the world (Ephesians 3:8-12).
We believe that in the New Testament Age in which we now live, God’s cultural mandate of Matthew
28:19-20 requires a voluntary submission of mankind to Christ’s Lordship, which we, the Church, are
called to both model and preach as we go forth “making disciples in all nations.” We believe that as God’s
ambassadors, we are to bring the influence of our King to bear on every facet of this world’s culture until
the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord and His Christ (see Revelation 11:15). As
God has given us the ministry of reconciliation, we are to join Him in His work of reconciling the world to
Himself (see II Corinthians 5:18-20).

Christian Stewardship
NEW BIRTH ORIENTATION GUIDE
31
The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his
household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so
when he returns” (Matthew 24:45, 26 NIV).
A few questions come to mind when examining the topic of Stewardship:
1. What is a steward?
2. What is a Christian steward?
3. How do people benefit from committed Stewardship?
4. What are we to be stewards over?
5. What is our accountability as stewards?
A steward is defined as an administrator, manager, caretaker, agent, or custodian. It is important to realize that a
steward is one who takes care of someone else’s property. A Christian steward is one who takes care of or manages
the affairs of God.
a. God Owns Everything
We are stewards of all that God entrusts to us. His trust includes our children, money, gifts, abilities, mind, intellect,
bodies, and how we use our time.
A Christian steward is one who realizes that as Christians, “we live, and move, and have our being” in Christ (Acts
17:28). The Christian steward recognizes God as his preeminent Master and lives for Him. The whole of the
Christian’s life ─personality, time, talent, influence, material substance, everything─ is dedicated to Christ.
We are designed to steward our children, time, bodies, gifts, possessions, & resources?

GIVING SHOWS, HE IS LORD OF OUR LIVES.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not
change like shifting shadows. James 1:17, NIV.
Everything we own and everything we have comes from God. So, we simply offer him a small portion of the
abundance he has already given to us when we give.
Giving is an expression of our thankfulness and praise to God. It comes as an act of worship, recognizing everything
we have and give already belongs to the Lord.
God instructed believers to give a tithe, or a tenth, because this ten percent represented the first, most important
portion of all they had.
