Robert H. Adkins died February 2, 2005 at age 72. In addition to his television career as KPTV’s beloved “Addie Bobkins,” Bob performed leading roles in 23 shows at Portland Civic Theatre, among them Harold Hill in The Music Man, Hal in Picnic and Herman in Most Happy Fella. Dennis Bigelow died March 29, 2005 at age 52. Dennis was the first producer and frequent director at Portland Center Stage, when still part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and later became the artistic director of Portland Repertory Theatre. Afterwards, Bigelow freelanced around town at Triangle, Profile, Artists Repertory Theatre, and the Haven Project. Recent directing credits include ART’s Misanthrope, for which he received a 2000 Drammy Award. Janne Black died September 11, 2004 at age 54. She attended Portland Actors Conservatory in the 1990s and developed a natural style that colleagues described as “pure, unadorned and untheatrical.” Over the years she performed in Cyrano de Bergerac, Picnic, Getting Out, Top Girls and Spinning into Butter. Dennis Clancy died August 15, 2004 at age 60. Portland native Dennis was a unique character actor who first appeared in Portland Civic Theatre’s 1974 What the Butler Saw. He created over 60 roles, many at North End Players and Lakewood Theatre Company, most recently in Once in a Lifetime. James N. Erickson died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at age 67. In addition to teaching and directing hundreds of lavish Beaverton High School musicals, James’ 54-year theatrical career included directing for Musical Theater Company, Sylvia’s, OBITUARIES Lakewood, Portland Civic Theatre, and 40 years of “Breakfast with Santa” for Meier and Frank. James Robbins “Bob” Gardiner died April 21, 2005 at age 54. Bob won a 1974 Academy Award for the clay animated short Closed Mondays. In addition to his music shows, writing and animation, he is also remembered for the murals he painted in the Crystal Ballroom and for the front of the now-demolished Portland Civic Theatre. Edith M. Gunnar died August 21, 2004 at age 77. A Lake Oswego music teacher, Edie is remembered for roles such as Aunt Eller in SRO Productions of Oklahoma and Joanne in Company. Kay Lee died January 16, 2005 at age 90. Kay was a leading figure in local children’s theatre, having founded the improvisational Playbox Players that evolved into what is known to kids today as Ladybug Theater. Kay also appeared in the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Margo Skinner died April 11, 2005 at age 55. She passed away while appearing in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Moonlight and Magnolias in New York. In Portland she was recently seen as Goneril in Portland Center Stage’s 2004 King Lear, and as Martha in PCS’ Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, for which she won a 2004 Drammy for an Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress. John Quentin Welch died September 1, 2004 at age 75. “Tin,” as he was known, was a Portland native who directed and produced for Slabtown Stop Theatre, an alternative theatre that Welch founded and co-owned with his wife.
