A Message from the President

A Message from the CotillionChair

Greetings Debutantes and Beaus,

On behalf of our members of the Covington Area

Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,

I thank you for joining us in celebrating

our sixth annual Cotillion Ball “Leaping Beyond

Amazing”.

Congratulations and best wishes to our 9 Debutantes

and 2 Beaus on their presentation to society this evening.

It has been a pleasure for our chapter members

to work with this talented and intelligent group of

young men and women. It is our sincere prayer that

the activities and events shared will create fond memories

that will resonate with you throughout your life.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a non-profit

organization. The goals of the Cotillion Program are based

on the 5-Point Programmatic Thrust of the sorority which are: Economic

Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement,

Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.

A special thank you to the parents and families for trusting our chapter with

your precious children. We especially appreciate the advertisers that invested in

our Cotillion Program. It is the collective support of so many that help enable us

to reinforce our efforts to make a greater impact in the communities we serve, and

we do not take any of you for granted.

Our chapter is blessed to have a Cotillion Program Committee to head this

project. From recruitment of the Debutantes and Beaus, to this grand finale of the

Cotillion Ball, we thank you for your commitment to organizing and implementing

a program we can all be proud of. Again, congratulations to our 2019-2020

Cotillion participants. Enjoy tonight’s festivities.

Sincerely,

Sarah Lundy

Covington Area Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated

What an honor to have you all here to celebrate as we salute the

triumphs of these exceptional young adults. Whether a dedicated

committee member, a proud parent ready to hold back the

tears of joy, or honored guests overjoyed to be a part of this

treasured moment…

As we jointly present these young people as future leaders to

our community, may we all take pride knowing that each of

us were a crucial part of their strong village. Because of our

efforts, we can take comfort that they will have a brighter

tomorrow. After all, our Beaus are rising and our Debutantes

are blossoming. And with the Lord’s guidance leading their

way and all that we’ve taught them snug in their souls, we can

beam in knowing each one of them will leap beyond amazing!

Beaus and Debutantes, as your 2019-2020 Cotillion Chairperson,

I have had the distinct pleasure and privilege of seeing all of you

flourish. This evening I am overjoyed to proclaim that because of your

unwavering pledge to the program and enthusiastic involvement in the workshops, each of you

absolutely have earned the honor of being presented to society. The world will be richer with your

exposed to mounds of refinement. You were already the crème of the crop…leaders, athletes,

honor students, artists, and achievers. Now, you are even more prepared and poised to realize your

dreams.

My soul has been full watching you become true gentlemen and budding roses. While our time together

thus far has been very impactful, hold on because this evening will be enchanting. You are

As Co-Chairs we would like to express our sincerest appreciation to all of you for your

Greetings Soror Lundy and the Sorors of CAAC:

time, dedication, and commitment to this Cotillion season. Our theme this year – A Beau and a

Bloom… Leaping Beyond Amazing – truly resonated with your personalities.

During the past several months, you participated in a variety of programs and activities

designed to encourage you to accomplish your dreams and aspirations, strengthen your characters,

and enhance your sense of community awareness. Through it all, you have built lasting

relationships and are now ready to tackle the world. It was our pleasure to get to know you and

It is a distinct honor to extend a sincere congratulations and warm wishes to the members and friends of

the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Sorority, Inc. Thank you for your exemplary

service to our community through various projects, outreach events, including your chapter’s signature

events, annual Cotillion Ball.

The adaptation of cotillions by the African American community dates to the early 1940s. In keeping with

cotillion traditions, while serving as a rite of passage, our youths from various social classes were

introduced to society via presentation and dance after undergoing extensive teachings of good behavior,

dining etiquette, proper dress, self-confidence, and leadership skills. Today, the Covington Area

Alumnae Chapter, will carry out the tradition of introducing premier young ladies and gentlemen to our

society.

The 6th Annual Cotillion, “A Beau & A Bloom… Leaping Beyond Amazing” aligns with Delta’s

commitment to promoting growth and positive change within our communities. This event is both

rewarding and life-changing to all the participants, especially to those who have the opportunity to

advance in the areas of scholarship and service. Additionally, these young people will understand the

value of treating others with honor and respect while building valuable relationships, which will create

successful futures and service to others.

I thank each of you for your untiring efforts, dedication, positive impact on the lives of the participating

youths, community, and friends. This event, along with others, would make our Founders proud as

Covington Area Alumnae Chapter continues to afford countless opportunities to our youth and the

surrounding communities.

Yours in Delta,

In 2005, three visionary members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated saw the potential

for a new chapter to focus exclusively on the service of those counties on the eastern perimeter

of Metropolitan Atlanta. Stephanie Moore, Sarah Lundy and Jenell Clark began the journey that

would eventually culminate in the chartering of The Covington Area Alumnae Chapter. These Sorors,

with the help of several others, began and continued the discussion for several years bringing an

awareness to the demographic changes and population growth of this area.

In February 2012 Southern Regional Director Cheryl Turner recognized the growing need for

the establishment of a new chapter to focus exclusively on servicing the eastern Metropolitan Atlanta

counties of Newton, Walton and Barrow. A steering committee, chaired by Lisa McWilliams, was

established to make this long awaited goal a reality.

Steering committee members included Terri Belle, Stacy Brundage, Kenya Burroughs,

LaQuanda Carpenter, Jenell Clark, Wanda Dunham, Cynthia Durden, Willie Mae Durden, Emma

Forte, Kathleen Henderson, Beatrice Jackson, Charlene Jones, Monique Jones, Terrie Lockhart,

Celeste M. Jordan, Sarah Lundy, Boncille Mattox, Stacey Miller, Melissa Teemer-Mims, Stephanie

Moore, Deena Sams, Derrica Stevenson, Charlayne Turner, Carol Westbrook and Isha Western.

For the next two years the steering committee worked closely with North Georgia State Coordinator

Patsy Pattman to satisfy all established standards necessary to create a new chapter. This

included an extensive evaluation of the service area which resulted in the development of several

proposed programs to be implemented. This process also resulted in the reclamation of over 30

inactive Deltas.

On April 12, 2014, the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter was established as the 1034th

Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with 75 charter members. The chartering ceremony

took place at the Newton College and Career Academy in Covington, Georgia and was presided over

by Southern Regional Director Cheryl Turner and National Scholarship and Standards Committee

member Sandra Horton. The members of Covington Area Alumnae Chapter are extremely grateful

to Regional Director Cheryl Turner for her instrumental role in helping us to fulfill our ten year

vision. We are also thankful for all of those sorority members throughout the years who helped and

encouraged us along the way. The knowledge gained from our journey will further enhance the service,

sisterhood and scholarship we bring to our community and the world.

Rites of Passage

Ceremonies of social transformation include all the life-cycle ceremonies, since

these involve social transitions for the subjects of the ritual and also for other

persons. The Cotillion Ball is a social transformation for all the young ladies

and gentlemen signifying them being trained and polished to step into their

next stage in life. The young ladies were presented with Tiara Crowns and

Roses, and the young men were presented with Top Hats and Canes.

The Tiara represents Grace, Beauty and Excellence! Since the beginning of

time, women of power have worn it to signify their authority to others, but

also their class distinction to others. However, class is not something you

always wear, it is how you carry yourself…with pride, head held high, walking

straight and direct with purpose at all times… Royalty! So whether you are

wearing jeans, a sweatshirt and pearls (Yes, you can wear pearls with a

sweatshirt!)…or rocking a formal gown to a Ball, may you always feel like a

Queen!

Covingtion Area Alumnae Chapter

Presents Your

2019 - 2020 Cotillion Participants

A Single Red Rose symbolizes our undying love for our Debutante ladies.

However, it also conveys respect, and the creative spirit of love and courage.

We charge our Debutantes to always have respect for themselves, each other,

and the world around them. The red rose has long been the symbol of unconditional

love, which is why it is most befitting for our Debutante ladies.

The Top Hat symbolizes that of a crown and royalty of a King. It also represents

class with a touch of a gentleman. Young men should carry themselves

as Kings, walk with class and always be a gentleman. Although they only

wear the hat on special occasions, they should conduct themselves as if it is

always there.

The Cane symbolizes a shepherd’s staff. Each Beau is challenged to lead those

that need guidance and to be leaders of the flock/community. In addition, the

cane represents wisdom and authority which combine to make great young

men that are charged to represent the community no matter where they are

or what they are doing.

By Stephanie Perry Moore

I’m a true gentleman,

destined for greatness.

I’m ready to climb.

Ready to dare.

Ready to reach.

Obstacles may come my way,

but I’m getting over.

There won’t be anything that can,

can stop my dream!

And because I am a Delta Beau,

I know I’m destined for greatness.

I’m eager to give.

Eager to care.

Eager to share.

Tough times may block my way,

But I’ll press right through them.

I know in this life

I can achieve all I want to be.

Blooming and blossoming

Into a beautiful creation.

I’m at a point in my life

OUR DEBUTANTE

The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.

Nykirra Norman, your journey, to this point, has been

victorious. The birth of a daughter into the world is beautiful.

The first time as a father and mother seeing such beauty,

excellence, and perfection that our higher power bestowed

upon young adults. Every sound, movement, and all the

energy you displayed as a baby, as a gift from above, was

amazing. Looking into the eyes of a blessed child, we fell

deeper in Love and opening our eyes to the true

understanding of Love. You Inspired us both to strive in

order to provide and Love you as we learned to love

ourselves. You were powerful then without being able to

speak. As time went by watching you grow transitioning,

being flexible, always Loving us regardless of our shortcomings as parents, leaders, and nurturers. We

told you to always keep your head up regardless of your outcome, look people in the eye, and tell the truth

and keep it moving. To stand on what you know. You know God Love you, You know everything will

work in your favor, “Blessed”. You have displayed workmanship, how to transition from a baby to a

perfect young woman. Yes your perfect to us not just because were parents, because you did this: You

walked the plank of life, You believed in us, You worked and went the extra mile, you prayed late nights,

You overcome heartaches and pain, You endured temptations that

entrap our youth, You kept us happy, encouraging us; your parents;

adults; to continue to strive and fight no matter how hard things get.

Our Love for you cannot be contained nor explained. We can tell you

we Love you . We can show you we Love you. The end of your

journey we will be there as in the beginning. We will always support,

cherish, and Love you in the end as in the beginning no matter where

your journey in life takes you. Thank you for your grace and Love!

Sincerely,

The Entire Norman Family

Don’t Quit

Success is failure turned inside out

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you never can tell how close you are

It may be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit

It’s when things seem worst

That you must not quit
