WELCOME

Greetings from Boise, Idaho!

Idaho’s capital city is situated in the high desert of southwestern Idaho, right on the Boise River.

There are 21 non-stop destination flights daily connecting our city at the foot of the Boise mountain

front to the world. Boise’s stellar quality of life includes a vibrant urban downtown, cultural and

culinary experiences, unique attractions and close-in outdoor recreation. When you get here, you’ll

enjoy a thoroughly walkable, friendly and safe downtown.

We are delighted that you are thinking about Boise as your place to visit. My hope is that once you

stop in, you’ll see why we’ve made so many “Top 10” lists in the last few years.

We designed this booklet to be both engaging and useful as you arrange your vacation, or use it to

help you navigate the area once you are here. We’ve put lots of useful information such as where to

stay, what to do, history and culture, day trips, unique parks and features along the Boise River and

so much more.

We’ve never met a stranger. In Boise we meet friends!

Carrie Westergard, Executive Director

basques

IN

Boise

In Boise, the Basque culture is alive and well — enriched by both its history

and the vibrancy of an active, engaged community. More people of Basque

descent live in the Boise area per capita than any other place outside

of the Basque region of Southern France and Northern Spain. Basque

descendants first began arriving in Idaho in the late 1800s, often taking work

as sheepherders for English and Scottish immigrants.

BOISE VISITOR GUIDE | BOISE.ORG

Today, Basque traditions from “the old country” as well as their time as

sheepherders can be experienced in Boise. The most notable place to

find it all? The Basque Block! Here, the Basque Museum, set in a historic

Basque boarding house, tells the story of Basques in Idaho and beyond.

Restaurants Bar Gernika and Leku Ona give you a taste of Basque culture.

The Basque Market, stocked with wines and food from the Basque Country

and Spain, lets you take a bit home with you. And the Basque Center, built in

1949, offers an opportunity to participate in community events and Basque

dancing and gatherings.

While events and small festivals are a common occurrence on the Basque

Block, none match the size and scale of the international Basque festival

“Jaialdi” (pronounced hi-all-dee). Every five years, Boise welcomes performers

and visitors from the Basque Country and around the world. The next Jaialdi

Festival is July 27-August 1, 2021.

In Boise, boredom is not an option. Picture this. You step outside

your hotel room in the center of town and find a 25-mile long riverside

Greenbelt path, a Ridge to Rivers trailhead leading into wild and scenic

foothills, or one of the expansive, interconnected parks lining the city.

And you can be enjoying any one of them in under five minutes. Really.

Here, outdoor pursuits exist in perfect sync with city life. In just minutes

you and your family can escape to float a river, ski, visit a museum, hike,

bike and more. Boise is no ordinary place.

BOISE VISITOR GUIDE | BOISE.ORG

wineries

With the first grapes planted in Idaho in 1864, our state is in many ways just

in its infancy of wine history, but the growing industry is becoming more

well-known through the country. From a pure geographical standpoint,

area vintners insist Idaho offers ideal growing conditions. A combination

of cold nights and hot days serves the balance needed for both the

acids and sugars. Hosting this ideal mix of temperature, water and soil

conditions, Idaho’s wine industry has been steadily growing the last 30

years, especially with remarkable growth this past decade, adding over 11

new wineries since 2002.

With no shortage of options, Idaho boasts over 60 wineries throughout

the state and endless winery experiences in and around Boise. Visit

idahowines.org for more information.

explore. Located biking or walking distance on the Greenbelt from

Downtown Boise. For more information about Garden City

call (208) 472-2913.

day trips

To the north of Boise lie mountains, mountains and more mountains. To

canyons. To the east, more farmland and the volcanic wonders of the Snake

River Plain. Whether you’re spending a couple of hours or the whole day,

there are dozens of short trips out of Boise that will introduce you to the

wonders of scenic Idaho.

Idaho City

A short drive up Highway 21, Idaho City was the largest town in the

Northwest in 1865. Idaho’s oldest store, the Boise Basin Mercantile,

and several saloons and restaurants are open on Main Street.

Idaho’s oldest newspaper (the Idaho World) is still published here

and the original Idaho City Hotel still rents rooms on Montgomery

Street. You can visit the Territorial Jail and the Boot Hill Cemetery

as well as the Boise Basin Museum, a former post office that now

houses a fascinating display of Old West memorabilia, and enjoy

Idaho’s Wine Country

When you go southwest from Boise, you’re headed into Idaho’s wine

country. Here, on the same latitude as the famed wine regions of

France, Idaho vintners are producing award-winning wines on the

fertile slopes above the Snake River. Sunny Slope is home to many

fine wineries. Most offer tours and tasting rooms and Ste. Chapelle,

the largest, hosts outdoor jazz concerts on Sunday afternoons during

June and July. Contact the Idaho Wine Commission at (208) 332-1538.

Just one hour southwest of Boise, this former wintering ground for

the Paiute Indians features a large concentration of petroglyphs and

ancient campsites. Learn the history of this nomadic tribe at the

visitor center, or try your hand at the ATLATL bow range. Contact

Celebration Park at (208) 495-2745.

Lucky Peak State Park and Black Cliffs

About 20 minutes outside the heart of downtown Boise you will find

the Boise River winding its way past the Black Cliffs on the way to
