Year 4 - Solids, liquids and gases

Year 4 have been studying about solids, liquids and gases and created their own posters. They needed to explain some statements as well as giving some examples of solids, liquids and gases. They also had the option to research some information for their posters. It is wonderful to see their effort and creativity that they have put into their work.

Solids

• Solids cannot flow because their atoms keep

a fixed shape, but squishes and sponges can be

squished because they have air gaps in them.

• Solids are a type of form of matter.

The molecules in solids are closely together

and can only vibrate.

• Things like Rulers and pencils and iPads are

like this because they don’t compress, they

keep a fixed shape and do not flow .

• Solids can turn into liquids by melting.

• Solids can turn into gases by sublimation.

Liquid

.It is between a solid and gas.

Liquid is also another form of matter.

Liquids can be compressed

Examples of liquids are Dr pepper, water, washing up liquid and mercury(in

thermometers).

Liquids will spread out.

Liquids can turn into a gas through boiling.

Liquids can turn into solids by freezing.

It wi

Gases

• Examples of gases Air, nitrogen, carbon

dioxide, oxygen and helium

• Gases can move quickly

• We breath out carbon dioxide and take in

oxygen

• Gases are untouchable

• Fart gas is made of methane

• Gases can be compressed

• The air in balloons is called Helium

• Gases can turn into liquids by

condensation.

Solids

• Solids can be strong.

• They do not take the shape of the container that

they are put into.

• Can be transparent.

• Some solids you can melt easily but some melt at

high temperature.

Fun Fact

• Some solids melt at 1100 degrees like rock that

turns into lava!!

Liquids

• Liquids can take the shape of any container

that they are put into.

• Liquids can pour.

• Can spread out

• The most common liquids is water here

are some more

• Golden syrup

• Juice

• Maple syrup

Gases

• Gases can be used lots of different

ways, like cooking and providing

power for our homes.

• Gases like to spread out and fill their

container.

• Are often colourless.

• Can be compresses

• Fun Fact

• Gas are used in helium ballons!
