February 2021 Franklin Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 11Franklin Resident Graduates Early, Gains InvaluableExperience at Dean CollegeBrendan Howe, a 2017 FranklinHigh School graduate, admittedthat Dean was not on his listof colleges when he first startedapplying.“It wasn’t until late in the processwhen my parents pushed meto take a tour (of Dean). When Idid, I was sold immediately.”Brendan’s love for sports combinedwith Dean’s amenities thathe discovered during his tour, likethe gymnasium full of athletictrophies (known as the TrophyRoom), the radio station, andeven the office of John Rooke.Rooke, a professional sportscasterfor over 30 years, overseesthe Center for Business, Entertainmentand Sport Managementat Dean as well as servingas a faculty member. His officeis filled with sports memorabiliaand mementos from his long careerin sports.“I’ve had the dream to be asportscaster since I was 15, and Iknew that no other school wouldgive me a better chance to get involvedright away.”So, he enrolled at Dean wherehe chose to pursue his passion inthe sports broadcasting program.When asked what it was liketo attend a college in his hometownof Franklin, Brendan hadno qualms. He lived on campusbut had the luxury of goinghome whenever he pleased.“It was unique being able togo to school in the same town Igrew up in. I knew the area, andI was able to see all my friendsfrom Franklin whenever theywould come home. It was nicebeing able to combinecollege and my home life,which is an opportunity a lot ofstudents don’t have.”The summer after completinghis freshman year, Brendanreceived his first play-by-playinternship with the New BedfordBay Sox in the NECBL thanksto the connections he made atDean.“Landing something like that,while being so young is almostunheard of. When I got therethat summer, I was calling gameswith kids from Syracuse, Northwestern,URI and all sorts ofbig schools. I realized from therethat the size or reputation of theschool you go to really doesn’tmatter, it’s the people who teachyou and mentor you that matter,and I would argue that no schoolin this area is better at that thanDean.”The following summer, Brendanworked for the Cape CodBaseball League. That fall, nowin his junior year, he created theDean Daily, the Dean Collegenewspaper.“I noticed that Dean didn’thave a newspaper and I’ve alwaysbeen big on writing, so I thoughtthat if I were to start somethingand give students a way to voicetheir opinion, that it would reallybe something we could grow.”In December of that year,Brendan extended his professionalexperience by providingcolor commentary for a ProvidenceBruins game on AHL TV.Even during the pandemic,Brendan found a way to broadcastgames. He spent this pastsummer in Louisiana working fora Texas Collegiate League.As for the future, Brendanplans to start work as soon as hepossibly can.“I’m actively applying andinquiring about jobs acrossMinor League Baseball and additionallyat Division I and II collegesacross the country. Havingworked through three internshipsin baseball at different levels withdifferent responsibilities duringmy time at Dean has wellequippedme to carry a heavyworkload wherever I land.”Brendan wrapped up his timeat Dean with the honor of beingone of two seniors selected tospeak on behalf of students atDean College’s virtual graduationtoast for December 2020graduates held via zoom.One thing is certain – basedon his extensive resume, the futurehas great things in store forthis standout student.If you are a high school studentinterested in sports broadcasting,Dean offers summerpre-college programs that arefor credit and offer a great introductionto college life.
