CELEBRATION OF SENIOR
HIGH SCHOOL DAYS KICK
STARTS THE SECOND
SEMESTER
BY SCHAER CHANTAL ABADIER
The first-ever virtual Senior High School
(SHS) Days of Trinity University of Asia’s
(TUA) SHS Department was held last January
19-22, 2021 as an event that brought the students
together in various activities before they begin the
second semester of their online classes.
The 4-day long program was organized by the
SHS Days Committee headed by Mr. Jerome Angelo
Roxas, SHS Days 2021 Chairperson, who worked
alongside Mr. Ian Galman, Senior Eye (SE) adviser,
and Ms. Virginia Fernandez, Student Leaders Council
(SLC) adviser.
The goal of this event according to Mr. Alejandro
Vinalay, the TUA-SHS Officer-in-Charge (OIC), is
to let the students take part in the different events
planned for their enjoyment before the second
semester of the school year begins. He mentioned
in his opening remarks during the first day of the
said event that the pandemic cannot keep the
department from celebrating together, even
through events like this. “When even during the
pandemic, it did not stop you from competing
and enjoying. That even in this pandemic, we were
brought together to celebrate our lives,” as stated by
Ms. Vinalay during his opening remarks.
One of the most-awaited programs during
the event was the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Tournament where five teams–Allygator, Enigma
Codex, Resistance PH, Easy Grind, and Singles
Club–competed against each other throughout the
duration of SHS Days and in the end, the team
Resistance PH gained the title of the champions in
the tournament.
The Open Mic Competition, which happened
during the first day of the celebration, was one of the
many events planned for the TUA-SHS community
during the SHS Days. The participants who
joined this competition performed spoken poetry
pieces that had different themes such as roles of
women in the society, the feeling of love at first
sight and one-sided love, and thoughts that seemed
like a “waging war.” Ms. Kylene Richelle Guda
from Grade 11 STEM 1, who won the Open
Mic competition, presented her piece entitled
“Kamalayan Aking Bayan” discussing the current
political issues in the country and tells the Filipinos
to face the reality of the situation and fight for what
is right.
Afterward, an Artwork Competition was held
with the theme “Kabataan Pilipino: Henerasyon
ng Pagbabago.” The winner of the said competition
was Ms. Alliyah Marie Caparros from Grade 12
ABM. Her artwork depicted the Philippine flag
as the background and a woman, who represented
the current generation as her main subject. She
explained that she added broken lines followed by
a flower in bloom around the lady to represent the

BY ABIGAIL TAN
Trinity University BY ABIGAIL of Asia TAN (TUA) facilitated a
teacher in-house training known as the Trinity-inhouse
Teacher-formation Training (T3)–which was
attended by some of the Senior High School (SHS)
Faculty who were chosen based from demonstrating
their notable ability to handle future T3s as to develop
these skills even more, particularly in handling the
training–held last January 12 to 18, 2021, amid the
Encoding of Grades of the SHS students.
With the theme, “Effective Quality eLearning
and Online Distance Education,” some of the TUA-
SHS faculty including Ms. Virginia Fernandez, Mrs.
Maria Linda Menegon, and Mr. Jerome Angelo Roxas,
developed new approaches and applications such
as Kotobee Reader, Zoom Meetings, and Microsoft
Teams to help the students struggling with the current
learning setup, as they took part in the training.
T3 provided a channel for the students as Mr.
Galman stated, “…it would show and highlight the new
methods the faculty will be utilizing as we enter the
2nd semester,” as he reassures that T3 would make the
students excel more in learning from the approaches
acquired and developed by the instructors.
The Trinisyano concept was also established
as it highlighted the refined skills of the Trinitian
instructors, which is a far better option than recruiting
other teachers from other institutions.
“It’s more of a fine-tuning as faculty who are learning
in T3,” said Mr. Galman.
The T3 Training offered a substantial opportunity
for the faculty of the TUA-SHS to boost their skills and
enhance their methods in teaching as they welcome a
new round of online classes.
The TUA-SHS faculty mentioned above had also
undergone several programs related to dealing with
psychosocial interactions after gathering data from
a survey mainly to assess what teachers can do more
for improvements in teaching, and workshops such
as Managing Zoom Webinars (T3W6) and T3 Mentor
Training (T3W8).
Mr. Alejandro Vinalay, the SHS Officer-in-Charge
(OIC), was invited as a guest speaker who tackled the
topic of the Maslow Before Bloom, together with
Mr. Ian Galman, the T3 Logistics Head and who’s also
a guest speaker for Microsoft Teams, and one of the
delegates, Mr. Rodrigo Lofredo Jr., the head of the
Project DREAM, who attended the Engaging with the
Community in the New Normal and Beyond (T3W4)
program, which is important in strengthening the
actions necessary for the betterment of the university’s
community.

SHS PREPARES
TO HOST JHS TNT
BY ABIGAIL TAN
For the upcoming 58th founding Anniversary
of Trinity University of Asia (TUA) this
February 20, 2021, the Senior High School (SHS)
Department begins to prepare Tagisan ng Talino
(TnT) Junior High School (JHS) division to
mainly highlight the intellectual minds of these
students.
According to Mr. Rodrigo Lofredo Jr, the
chairperson of the said quiz bee, the competition
itself is an avenue to unleash the potentials of the
SHS students through excelling in real-life challenges
amidst the new normal other than in the academic
aspect which is made possible through their
collaboration with the marketing department of the
university.
Hosting this year’s TnT is a challenge to the
SHS since it is to be held virtually. As they prepare,
the biggest preparation needed to be carried out
properly is the formulation of questions best fitted
for Grade 9 and 10 levels.
Ms. Angelyn Tesorero, the Committee on
Program and Evaluation, and Ms. Krixsela Fulong,
the Committee on Subject Areas, will work
alongside Mr. Ian Galman, the Logistics Committee
and Senior Eye adviser, and Mr. Lofredo Jr. to make
the event more manageable, considering the many
challenges that may happen during the virtual event.
The expected judges for this year’s quiz bee are
TUA-SHS Faculty Members: Dr. Ernesto Framo,
Ms. Fulong, Ms. Rosary Quiling, Mr. Mark Marfal,
and the TUA-SHS Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Mr.
Alejandro Vinalay.
As for the participants, the competition will cater
to Math, Science, Language, Social Science, and
current events as the core subjects of the quiz bee.
“Bringing the name of the university and its
program to the participating schools is already an
edge of the university,” said Mr. Lofredo Jr.
Indeed, it will be a big opportunity for the
department to be known in other schools both in
the city and in the provinces, as one that is capable
of overcoming the challenges brought by the new
normal.
entitled “I am Young,” written by Mr. Judah
Cantoria–the bandleader and guitarist.
The celebration of 2021 SHS Days ended with
the prestigious pageant in the search for the new
Mr. and Ms. TUA-SHS. Nine candidates competed
for the title and crown with both beauty and wit
to prove who was deserving to be the new faces
of the TUA-SHS Department. At last, Mr. Excel
Herbert E. Guadiz and Ms. Bea Bianca S. Racelis
were crowned as the Mr. and Ms. TUA-SHS 2021
and will represent the SHS Department during the
58th Founding Anniversary of the university in
February.
The program ended successfully through the
different faculty members and organizations that
worked to make it possible. Members of the SHS
Days committee were praised and thanked by the
audience and other faculty members for they were
able to fulfill the goal of bringing the TUA-SHS
community together through this special event.
TUA-SHS Conducts
General Orientation
for 2nd Semester
BY CHAMPAINE LAGRIMAS
As the second semester approaches, Trinity
University of Asia Senior High School (TUA-
SHS) hosted a Students’ and Parents’ Virtual
Orientation which aimed to reassess rules and
regulations and to respond to concerns. This was
held through Zoom Webinar from 8:00-11 AM for
Grade 11 and 2:00-5:00 PM for Grade 12, last
January 25, 2021.
TUA-SHS Officer-in-Charge (OIC), Mr. Alejandro
Vinalay, gave his opening remarks which featured
the quality of education and service offered by the
university. He introduced the faculty of the SHS
Department from which the new students can
familiarize themselves with the new faces they will
encounter for this semester.
The current setup and its modalities make it more
challenging for both students and teachers to live
up to the requirements imposed by the Department
of Education (DepEd). During these trying times,
different ways of learning are being conducted by
the teachers to continue imparting knowledge to the
SHS students.
The Student Leaders Council (SLC) President
and Vice President of TUA-SHS, Ms. Desiree Mae
Catubig and Ms. Anne Francinne P. Quinito, shared
their experiences during the whole process of online
classes. According to Ms. Quinito, unlimited access to
get food from time to time kept her distracted from
listening in class. They also visited the programs,
activities, and events that were established last
semester.
With our current learning modality, internet
connection is indeed essential to communicate
with the teachers and fellow schoolmates, attending
asynchronous and synchronous sessions, and for
passing the requirements. Weak internet connection
makes it hard for both students and teachers to keep
up with the lessons and so as interaction.
Because the new educational setup uses different
online platforms, rules of netiquette for the current
learning modality was discussed by Mr. Rodrigo
Lofredo Jr, one of the TUA-SHS faculty. He
emphasized the difference between thinking before
Six Different SLC
Groups Officially
Open for TUA-SHS
BY LOUISSE ANN DAGOHOY
The Student Leader Council (SLC) of Trinity
University of Asia Senior High School (TUA-
SHS) proposed six different groups for the
students from the SHS community to enjoy amidst
the restrictions brought about by the existing
pandemic. These were approved by the TUA-
SHS Officer-in-Charge, Mr. Alejandro Vinalay,
last January 27, 2021, and will undertake this
coming February.
According to the SLC, the sole purpose of
establishing these groups is in line with the nonavailability
of the TUA Pep Squad this year.
As the SLC president, Ms. Desiree Mae Catubig,
said during an interview in an episode of Senior
Eye Exclusive News (S.E.E.N.) “..we thought of
creating groups. Groups that could help us learn
more about ourselves, that would help us develop
soft skills, teach us to work with a team, teach us
how to engage with diverse groups of people, help
us gain leadership skills, and to have a somewhat
break from our studies while having fun”
The SLC launched the Chorale Group for
students who are interested in singing, composing
music, and playing musical instruments.
Additionally, the Book Lovers club is for those who
desire to have an educational yet fun experience
in reading. Students can also engage and acquire
experience in film and media through the Film
and Media (FaM) Group, which offers interactive
games related to film and media. Furthermore,
the Artwork Group will give the students an
opportunity to unleash their creativity and skills in
the field of arts. A chance to showcase one’s talent
in movement and coordination through the opening
of a Dance Group to enhance the dancing skills
of SHS students. Lastly, the Debate Group will
help the students expand their knowledge in public
speaking through varying topics such as history,
social issues, and current events.
Aside from enjoyment, these groups serve as
an extra motivation to help the students persist
more when it comes to their academics and find
friendships as they meet other people to achieve
common goals.
Students can join by registering from the links
given by the SLC Officers.
clicking from thinking before typing, in terms of
creating a more peaceful learning environment for
everyone.
To give a heads up on what to expect during the
whole period of the semester, the new class schedules
and proposed school calendar were given. In this
case, both students and their parents can be more
mindful about the upcoming activities and set dates
for important matters like Recognition Rites and
Graduation Ceremony.
With this, the orientation created an avenue for
the students and parents to be reminded of what
should be implied with the current setup. Through it,
the students were given an opportunity to re-evaluate
themselves with online learning and showed survival
from the first semester which helped them improve
and be more equipped as the final semester takes into
account.

The Commencement
of the RECAST
Program With The
Help of TUA SHS and
TUA JHS Department
BY ALTHEA ALVARADO
The Rethinking Education, Championing
and Accelerating School Transformation
(RECAST) Program was officially sealed and
signed by Trinity University of Asia’s Senior
High School Department (TUA-SHS) with
its Junior High School Department
(TUA-JHS), and Betty Go Belmonte (BGB)
Elementary School last January 29, 2021, and
was held at BGB Elementary School itself.
Mr. Alejandro C. Vinalay, Officer-in-charge
of TUA SHS, and Mr. Julius D. Somera, Officerin-charge
of TUA JHS, served as the lead
proponents who gave prominence to this
significant milestone together with the partner
school, Betty Go Belmonte Elementary School,
which was represented by their principal, Dr. Alicia
Masubay, on the Memorandum of Agreement
(MOA) for the RECAST program.
The said project was originally launched and
introduced by the Private Education Assistance
Committee (PEAC), in partnership with
Intelegente Publishing Inc..This program will
alleviate the holes of the new way of learning
particularly with public schools. It is purposely
lined with the ideology, “Education for all” despite
the adversities of the online learning environment.
With the participation of TUA SHS, Mr.
Vinalay coordinated with the Student Leaders
Council (SLC) of the department with the
supervision of Ms. Virginia C. Fernandez to serve
as learning assistants (LA). These key persons
will help in assisting alongside teaching the Grade
5 students of BGB Elementary School who
experience difficulties in this new mode of
learning.
This project is expected: (a) to provide online
learning continuity access, (b) to enhance the
improvisation of academic learning, and (c) to
develop the psycho-social well-being of students.
It also aims to spotlight the two Trinitian core
values, social responsibility, and teamwork. And
as remarked by Mr. Vinalay in an interview
focusing on the RECAST Program, “Trinity
[Trinity University of Asia] is known for servicelearning
and community service”. He said that
the program would pave the way to produce not
just intellectuals but also humane individuals.
In line with this, the RECAST team is
encouraging students to volunteer with the said
program. For those who are interested, they
can directly inform any of the key persons
including the SLC, and/or the OICs of both Trinity
University of Asia’s JHS and SHS Department.

SHS TRINITIANS SHOWCASE THEIR
TALENTS IN VIRTUAL SHS-GT
BY SCHAER CHANTAL ABADIER
Trinitians proved to be talented individuals
as different students from Trinity University of
Asia’s Senior High School Department (TUA-
SHS) performed during the Senior High School
Got Talent event on January 20, 2021 from
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, part of the department’s
celebration of SHS Days.
Six students from the TUA-SHS Department–
John Julian Roy, Renceline Chan, Erica
Pazcougin, Jheraldine Turno, Devie Ruziel
Saliendra, Larry Joseph Villamarin–prepared
performances and presented their different
talents such as playing musical instruments,
singing, and dancing for the rest of the TUA-SHS
community to enjoy.
One thing in common with all the participants
was their passion for their talent. Whether it was a
skill they recently discovered or a skill they have
honed for years, all participants showed how
passionate they were during the event. “In
discovering one’s talent, you should always try
new things. Eventually, you’ll learn na magaling
ka dun,” Mr. Roy stated during an interview after
his performance as he encouraged the audience to
step out of their comfort zone to discover their
talents. As for Ms. Pazcougin, who has been a
dancer for years, shared her mindset throughout
the years she has been learning dance during the
post-performance interview. “Hindi dahilan ang
pagod para tigilan mo ang gusto mo, pahinga lang,”
Ms. Pazcougin answered.
The winner of the competition was Ms.
Renceline Chan who performed a dance cover of
the catchy Korean Pop song “I Can’t Stop Me” by
the popular girl group TWICE. Her impressive
dance skills in her video presentation earned her
title as the winner in the SHS Got Talent event.
In an interview with Ms. Chan, she talked
about her journey in dancing. She shared that she
began dancing when she was young, but found
her passion in it and took dancing seriously in
2018. For her, dancing became a form of escape.
Dancing brought her happiness, relieved her stress
and negative emotions, and allowed her to be free
from her worries. “I dance to get away from it, even
for just a little while,” as stated by Ms. Chan during
the interview.
During the event, Ms. Chan performed one of
her favorite Korean songs. She shared that KPOP
was one of the reasons her passion for dance grew.
“I wouldn’t love to dance as much as I do now if
it wasn’t for K-Pop,” she stated during the
interview. Seeing the SHS Got Talent event as an
opportunity to showcase her skills, she chose “I
Can’t Stop Me” as she loved the upbeat vibe of the
song and its fun choreography.
When she found out the results of the
competition, she could not believe that she was the
winner of the event. Initially, she was confused, but
when the news finally sunk in, she got so excited
and told her mother the good news.
Ms. Chan also shares her talent through her
Youtube channel, called ‘MyNameIsCeline,’ where
she posts more of her dance covers. She started
her channel because she wanted it to be a platform
for her where she can share her love for dancing
and KPOP, and maybe even inspire others to start
dancing.
The event ended with judges Prof. Gracia
DG. Sarao and Dr. John Michael O. Lorena
(SLCN Dean) thanking the participants for their
presentations and encouraged them to continue
enhancing and sharing their talents with others.
The SHS Got Talent event was one of the many
opportunities for Trinitians like Ms. Renceline
Chan to showcase their talents with others. Just like
what the judges said to the participants, Trinitians
should continue to let their talents grow and be seen
by other people.

As the celebration of Senior High School
(SHS) Days continues on its third day, the Dogs
Are Noisy Canines, a.k.a D.AN.C, from the home
of TUA-SHS department, participated to perform
at the Battle of the Bands (BotB) 2021 that mainly
showcased their talents in singing and use of
instruments held in the afternoon of January 21,
2021, shown via Facebook Live in a pre-recorded
performance.
As SHS Trinitians, this opportunity to
perform despite not being able to compete for this
year’s BotB helped the team to squeeze out their
ideas from the preparations needed. And according
to the team’s bassist, Mr. Charles Baluyo, it’s a boost
for confidence to overcome his stage fright.
Before performing their original composition,
D.A.N.C covered a song entitled, “Castaway,”

band leader and guitarist, entitled, “I Am Young,”
is all about asking for advice, “…dedicate ko siya sa
mga students like us na feeling na nawawala or sa mga taong
natatakot sa mundo, kasi I know how that feels,” said Mr.
Cantoria. The inspiration of the song came from
a ‘random tree’ that Mr. Cantoria saw and started
fantasizing about how the tree resembles himself,
once frightened but now has fully grown.
During the interview, they also stated the
difference between performing live versus online
and how it affected their overall performance.
The energy from jamming with other
musicians lacks from performing online and it
generally affects the connection between them.
Performing online is basically laying out the audio
and video without the actual feeling of jamming in
person.
Though it’s a blissful feeling from the
collaboration and teamwork from different sections
they have developed, Mr. Jeff Del Rosario, the
team band’s drummer, said that the event would be
more meaningful and challenging if there are other
participants to compete with.
According to Aubrey Viloria, the band’s
vocalist, passion kept everyone going despite all the
adversities, “...music gives positivity in our lives and
keeps us alive.”
Even though the opportunity given to the band
is better during live, it’s still a pleasure, indeed, and
as said by Mr. Cantoria, “We are happy that we’re
able to perform especially from the fact that there’s
still an event like this during the pandemic.”
As a peak for their plans in the future, he
mentioned that their band is looking forward to
doing a few song covers when time permits them to
do so. He also added that it would be their pleasure
to represent the SHS department if the university
would cater to a competition similar to BotB.

ERICA
PAZCOGUIN
GRADE 12 - STEM
BY CHARISSE DELGADO
Varsity Ako!
Doing something you really love is one of
the things that makes a student passionate and
driven for success. There might be challenges
along the way but thinking of it as something
fulfilling, in the end, will direct you to your
ultimate goal. At Trinity University of Asia
(TUA) Senior High School (SHS), there are a
lot of goal-driven students that continue to strive
hard to become the kind of person they want
themselves to be. Erica Pazcoguin, a student
from 12 STEM 1, is a good example of these
exceptional Trinitians. She is a former member of
Trinity Dance Troupe (TDT) as she shares her
experience of being a part of the dance varsity
and for being one of the students who represented
the school with her passion for dancing.
THE RISE OF A BURNING PASSION
Erica did not want to join the Trinity Dance
Troupe at first – considering she lived far from
the school. The thought of just coming home late
and tired from training would just be a bit heavy
for her. However, seeing some of her friends who
are a part of the dance troupe enjoying despite
the challenges during training is what pushed her
to join. In a way, she was encouraged through her
friends. But deciding to join took some time for
her; therefore, she asked for signs, and thus, a sign
was given to her. The audition for the 2nd batch
was posted and that became the go signal for her.
That is when she auditioned for it, then eventually
passed, and officially became part of the Trinity
Dance Troupe. The struggle she thought at first did
not cross her mind at all anymore because even if
she’d come home late, she’d still come home happy
because she expressed herself once again through
dancing.
Finally a part of the dance troupe, Erica felt
thankful and delighted as this is another step for
her in becoming a student-dancer to represent the
school. But it was also not easy as it could be a
bit pressuring for her. Nonetheless, she strived for
greatness and trained with all her heart.
THE FUEL TO THE FIRE
Joining a dance troupe while being a student
requires commitment and time management –
there should be enough time for both training and
studying. However, just like other varsity players,
Erica experienced a hard time balancing her
schedule for studying and training. As she lives
far from the school, she had to wake up early and
leave at dawn to avoid getting late for school.
After classes, she’d proceed to training, and come
home late as she’d be caught up with the rush
hour. Spending a day being active from morning
till evening could be draining, so Erica often comes
home tired–therefore not having much time to
study and finish other requirements early.
It was indeed a struggle for Erica, but through
those hardships, she just continued believing in
herself and showed everyone that anyone can do
what they love no matter the circumstance. “Pagod
lang yan, hindi dahilan ang pagod para tumigil”, she said.
SETTING OUT THE FLAME
After all the thrilling experiences of training,
performing, and competing while holding the
school’s name, there are two things that Erica has
gathered as a lesson: (1) Learn to commit. When
joining in a dance troupe, it requires physical
strength, time, dedication, and determination in
order to keep going as it will represent the school
and of course, you as a person – and commitment
is the number one thing to have when it comes to
situations such as this; and (2) Learn to explore and
be open to new things. One cannot just stick to
something forever; they have to be open and ready
to discover more. Just like Erica, during her days
of training, she has learned different genres
of dancing, and also had the experience to
choreograph a song. If you open yourself to a lot
of new things, more opportunities will come to
you. Being dedicated to your passion is also what
makes you driven. Training is very serious –
meaning your attention during training should just
be focused on dancing itself.
If there is one thing we could learn from Erica,
that is to believe in ourselves. Believe that you
can do it and that you can work hard despite the
challenges because if you believe in yourself, you
can do anything if you put your mind to it. The
training might be hard and challenging but always
trust the process. Because in the end, it is you who
will succeed.
Erica decided to quit during the pandemic,
due to conflicting schedules regarding the online
Trinity Dance Troupe training, and also during a
time last June as their family was moving to a new
home, so it was hard for her to focus on her training.
But even if she is not a part of the dance troupe
anymore, she still continues to dance, practice, and
improve even if she is just alone – because this is
her passion and dancing is what makes her happy.

UNFOLDING THE JOURNEY TOWARDS
THE PEAK
“Finally, I’ll get the chance to teach Japanese
[Nihongo] in a university!”
These are the words that highlight the
impressions of Ms. Gladys Benamer, a part-time
teacher handling the Nihongo classes of Grade
11 Senior High School (SHS) students at Trinity
University of Asia (TUA). She was overwhelmed
with the unexpected loop of events as she grabbed
the opportunity of part-time teaching. She once
had a full-time job at a bank. Although, as she was
studying Nihongo because of her burning passion
for the Japanese culture, she was amazed by how
her ‘sensei’ teaches them. That instance was her Mt.
Fuji–or her commencement towards the peak of
her journey as a part-time teacher.
THE GREAT WAVE OF CHANGE
Part-time teaching was like her own Kanagawa
wave. It fosters great waves of changes in so many
aspects of her life. To begin with, Ms. Benamer
has an introverted personality. So technically,
teaching is a big shift to that aspect of her life. For
some, it may be taken in a negative way, but to her,
it was an opportunity for growth and productivity.
It paved the way for her to develop interactive
and social skills without setting aside personal
responsibilities. It was the uncertainty that became
a focal point of her life.
Bringing Japanese Culture to
the Philippines: The Story of
Ms. Gladys Benemer
HER LUSTROUS WINGS OF PASSION
There is indeed a thick line between full-time
and part-time teaching. But to Ms. Gladys, her
way of differentiating things is through impact.
According to her, there is no label between the
two types of teaching. The important thing is your
influence towards the focal point of teaching, the
students. A Great Purple Emperor Butterfly of
Japan is indeed a great metaphor to describe her.
There may be hundreds or thousands of species,
but this type of butterfly is special. There was also
her unforgettable experience wherein a student
thanked her for her great love and concern even
though things were quite rough at that time. She
did not think that gratitude was needed because
for her, it was her responsibility. She may have
finished a different degree, but her passion for
teaching and sharing knowledge reflects what other
teachers have been wanting to do. She is more than
qualified once her heart would speak for her. She
would stand out because of her undying passion
regardless of what her label as a teacher could be.
SWORD OF DEDICATION
“Happy Journey,” are the two perfect words
to describe her life as a part-time teacher. It was
like a sword yielded by her own passion. She was
the owner of that “katakana”, the mighty sword
of Japan. And passion was her greatest weapon
to conceive happiness. She owned her journey in
part-time teaching. She conquered and persisted
up until this very moment with great pride and
honor by the words, “Hindi ka part-timer ‘lang’…”.
Ms. Gladys even took this part-time experience
in teaching as an advantage to pursue her other
plans and responsibilities as well. She makes
this opportunity as a vent for productivity. She
even pinpointed the importance of planning and
management. “Wala naman yung mga teacher kung
wala yung mga students” another statement which she
added and also emphasized her dedication to
teach and spreading knowledge. Indeed, she is a
marvelous owner of a sword in which she used to
carve both the dreams of her students and her own
as well.
WHAT THE FIRST SEMESTER TAUGHT ME
BY CLARE TRINIDAD
Trinity University of Asia (TUA) is one of
the many schools that resulted in online learning
modalities amidst the pandemic. During the first
semester, Trinitian students and teachers faced
challenges as this was considered as the “adjustment
period” for everyone. It was a challenge in the aspect
of materials needed such as gadgets and stable
internet connections. The first semester has come to
an end and the Senior High School (SHS)
Department of TUA is about to enter its second
semester. After the first semester, we ask ourselves
this question: what have we learned from our
experience?
With my experience in the first semester, I noticed
that one of the common challenges experienced by
many Filipinos is doing online classes with a slow
internet connection. Both students and teachers
experience the unpredictability of the speed in their
internet connection. This causes frustrations to either
party because students may miss their classes and
teachers are not able to conduct their classes for the
students. Everyone is left doing their best to work
with what they have. There is also the patience and
understanding we give one another because of the
slow internet connection.
Another obstacle is the environment we study or
work in. Everyone would seek a quiet environment
when in class to be completely focused and have
no disruptions in the learning process. However,
not all environmental factors are controllable. We
cannot anticipate or take control over what may be
happening in the neighborhood or even at home.
So, the workspace of a teacher or student is one
thing they would have to prepare for to create a
better learning environment.
School activities or the workload is also a
challenge in online learning. There are different ways
on how we can do our school activities. We can do
it right after our class, set a time for it, or cram. We
are different when it comes to this. It depends on
how effective it will be for us. In online learning,
we get easily distracted, tired, and we have a lack of
motivation in our studies.
Teachers encountered the same challenges with
their students. Teachers handle a lot of students,
they check a lot of students’ work and manage some
of the school’s events. These things can be too
overwhelming for them with the fact that they also
have to take care of their families.
My fellow Trinitians and teachers made it through
the first semester despite the obstacles we
encountered. Some of the things that I did to cope
up to this new setting in learning are making a schedule
for a day, being open to what I really feel, and taking
enough rest. Making a schedule for a day helped
me be more organized, productive, and maximize
my time. Being open to what I really feel helped me
not get overwhelmed by the emotions I have and it
kept me from bringing those emotions to my studies.
I did not let myself be burned out by the school
activities. I took all the rest that I needed. Prioritizing
your rest will help you give your best in all the
activities you have.
This school year is an unexpected one for all
of us. There were many obstacles that we have
encountered but they will never hinder us from
reaching our goals. As the first semester has come to
an end, let us use these obstacles to strive harder in
our studies.

You may or you may not.
You are the master of your own life
Everything revolves around you and your choice.
So choose.
The sun and moon are bound to rise and fall,
Air is forever to dance with the wind,
And even great mountains are eternally compelled
to stand,
But you; you are to choose
Choose, whether you are to see or to be blind,
Choose whether you are to create or to destroy,
Choose, whether you are to fight or whether you
are to sit and wait.
Choose for that is your undying burden and pain.
For in the end, everything will turn to dust
And our inevitable demise can only be truly defined
By the choices that we made.
So “be”; you may or you may not,
Choose.

She Broke His Promise
BY ALTHEA ALVARADO
“Maya, please wake up!”
Pain struck me while I was hearing those words
from the man I love. All I hear were cries and
the beeping sound of the EKG. My eyes were
so heavy that I was clueless on what was going
to happen. But my heart felt like it was the end.
It was as if I were to disappear. It was as if I
were to abandon someone. It was as if my heart
knew I was leaving.
“Maya, I need you. I love you!”
“Please don’t leave me too soon!”
As the defibrillator lands on my chest, everything
went black. There was this deafening sound and
blinding darkness surrounding my senses. I took
a deep breath. It was as deep as the depths of
the sea in which my eyes are looking at this very
moment. I was facing the sublime creation as
the sea breeze slowly blows through my hair. I
felt a warm embrace from my back wrapping its
arms around my body. It was a majestic view, a
beautiful scenery, and a wonderful feeling. It was
my paradise.
“Rafael?”
“Hmm?”
“Stay with me okay?”
“And why would you think of me leaving you?”
“Please?”
He chuckled. While he was slowly blocking the
view, he held my hand and then my cheeks. He
squeezed it and kissed my forehead.
“Why would I ever leave home?”
Hearing those words from Rafael, my heart slowly
felt pain. But the pain was not of desolation. It
was pain of too much happiness and too much
hope. All too much.
The next day, I woke up next to Rafael Constantine.
Seeing his peaceful face made me reminisce of
all the good things that happened leaving the bad
things behind. He made me stick to a promise
of forever. A promise that I will hold on for a
lifetime.
“Are you ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”
We are about to try the awe-inspiring paradise
of Batanes. A place where the sun sets at the
line where the sky meets the sea. I was stunned
by everything underneath that line. The pristine
waters of Batanes lit up the rich diversity of its
marine life.
He held my hand as we explored this place that’s
just like utopia. I have experienced this a couple
of times but today, it was different. With him, it
was special. He showed me every inch of nature’s
beauty just like how he showed me how lustrous
a once a chaotic life could be. He opened my eyes
when all I wanted to do was to close it because
of fear and anxiety.
“Such a beautiful sight.”
I whispered as I was waiting for him at the deck.
“It is indeed beautiful.”
Rafael said while he was walking slowly towards
me holding two wine glasses. We set up a picnic
place at a yacht under the bright occidental stars
and the lustrous moon. A complete feeling of
solitude and intimacy.
“Here’s your drink Ma’am.”
We both laughed as he offered me a glass. We
exchanged stories. We exchanged thoughts. And
by every word coming out of his mouth, I fall
in love even more. His substance and mindset
were once my light. His words and embrace will
always be the moon to my darkest nights.
“Don’t leave me too soon okay?”
“Maya, I would never leave the woman who showed
me how love can be as constant as the stars at
night.”
“I was just… scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“My greatest fear is that soon enough you’ll find
someone better than me. Soon enough you’ll
find a woman whom you’ll love much more than
me.”
“Again Maya, why would I ever leave home? You
were my lighthouse. My ship would get lost if I
leave you.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Standing in front of the moonlight. A sultry
music played. He held my hand once again.
“Maya Persephone, may I have this dance?”
“Of course.”
As the tone began, we danced slowly and soulfully.
If a man could be two places at one time,
I’d be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning
slowly down to die,
I would never want my world to stop revolving
because I want to spend every bit of the future with
him. Together, we will explore more, love more,
and live more. This man I am dancing with, is the
man I’m willing to dance with my whole life. This
man I am embracing is the man I’m willing to
embrace for a lifetime. My trust for him is far
impossible from fading as well as my love. So, I
will keep him.
I’d spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away
This crazy woman in front of me had thoughts
of me leaving her. Little did she know that my
world revolves around her. She was and would
always be my sun. She gives me the warmth
of love that I have always dreamed of. I am
willing to spend my whole life with her. We’ll
get married, have kids, and grow old together.
I’d do everything with and for her. As I danced
with her through the night, I slowly closed my
eyes and felt her embrace.
And as soon as I opened it, tears fell as I saw the
love of my life laying on her deathbed. I held
her hand for the last time. I wish I held on to it
even longer when she was still alive.
“You’d always want me to stay. But now, why are
you the one who’s leaving? Where’s my home
now? Where’s my lighthouse? I am lost, Maya.
You were the one who left… too soon. So please
comeback. Please, stay with me.”
As the white balloons flew above the sky, Maya
looked down from the heavens seeing him cry.
While Rafael looked up assuring her that
everything will be fine, that he will be fine. Her
world stopped revolving in that very moment
as she spends her end with him. And he will
always and in all ways keep her in his heart
and mind even after her very end.

MS. TAKEN NOT SINGLE
As a believer of men and women have
different gender but both capable of fulfilling
similar duties, that itself permits women to also
pursue whoever men or fellow women they want.
It does not cross the line of the old culture or
tradition that men are the ones who court. If a
woman desires to court, it does not make her
less of a woman. Hence, it gives society a
guaranteed norm that everyone is free to express
their feelings towards someone without the matter
of who among these genders would make the ‘first
move.’ Women nowadays even propose marriage
to men that society finds amusing; that’s a solid
proof of courtship does not require a certain
gender to call it appropriate.

Courtship is defined as a period where two
individuals get together with the intention of
marriage as their end goal. With this definition
in mind, I do not believe that it should only be
the man doing the courting. Marriage is a lifelong
commitment and should be taken seriously.
Since the result involves the two individuals
significantly, it should not only be the man trying
to woo them. The woman should also be putting
effort into their relationship.

What did the past year/semester teach you?
What are the things you look forward to in this second
round of virtual classes?
If I do not start the change in me, I will not change. I saw this
during the times where I wanted to improve myself but I did not
have the motivation to do it, instead I left it to circumstances to
push me to improve. However, even when these circumstances
arrived, nothing happened.
Since I know what to expect already, I’m hoping that I will be
able to adjust to virtual classes and find ways to be able to
learn efficiently and effectively.
The past semester taught me to have a little patience and to
be understanding as this kind of setup is very challenging for
both students and teachers.
More room for self-improvement.
I look forward to make my performance better, and to improve
the weak points that I have.
The past semester teach me that in order for me to accomplish
things. I have to sacrifice some unnecessary time I wasted on
unimportant stuff.
What I look forward in this second semester is that hopefully
the pandemic will end and teachers and students will have a
chance to have a face to face classes.
The past semester taught me how important it is to manage
my time and how important it is to be able to study on my
own. It also taught me about self-awareness when it comes
to events and activities. In addition to that, I found out my
strongest and weakest points.
I look forward for a greater time schedule and module allotted
for me and my co-student to accomplish.
Independence, discipline and hard work
Clearer implementation of Synchronous and Asynchronous
classes.
The past semester taught me to be more responsible.
I just want the second semester to be more fun than the
first semester when everyone was still adjusting. More
engagements with the peers thru virtual platforms, and
hopefully face-to-face classes and graduation if possible.

Why must we act
now?
Our planet
is warming.
Climate change
is real. Yet these
phrases seem to
be mere quotes
that people used
only to highlight MERAKI
a debate or Jade Riz-anne De Leon
polish an essay.
Even though we like to ignore it, the fact that it’s
happening right now is alarming.
A lot of people may or may not have an idea of
what climate change is and why it is still an issue
today. Rising and warming of ocean levels, melting
of glaciers, and warming of the global temperature
are some of the real-life repercussions we openly
experienced nowadays. All of these just because
some people chose to end a forest, decided to trim
a mountain, pollute the water, emit gases, and burn
fossil fuels for the bare reason of self-interest and
own greed.
“Your words
cut deeper than
a knife…”, is one
famous line
which was used
in hundreds of
songs and poems.
LITTLE JO MARCH This phrase has
Althea Monica Alvarado been repeated
countless times in publications, song lyrics, and
compositions. However, these words are overused,
and yet up until this very moment, its own meaning
is unclear.
Verbal abuse is an attack which is unseen by the
naked eye. You will never know who experiences these
types of traumatic exploit. You can never tell if a person
is pained by criticism by just looking at them, which
makes it even harder to prove, justify, and heal.
The effects of these deep-cutting insults are
as grave as physical wounds. Though its scars

a Walking Timebomb
What is Love?
and bruises are not visible, the deep cuts within
are a victim’s long-lasting nightmare. Depression,
Anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) are just a flash of a wide and dark place created
by harsh words.
Most of the time, victims of verbal abuse are
degraded, misjudged, and invalidated because of
how easy an abuser could turn the tables. A victim’s
statement is often labeled as “overreaction” by
enablers. However, this matter should never be
taken for granted. It can take a person’s dream, future,
or even one’s life–which should be enough reason to
fix eyes on this issue.
Its bruises may be invisible, but the healing of
the scar is a big silent battle. A war with no one to
have as your soldier. It’s as if you were an invisible
walking timebomb seeking for help as you’re
running around the corner. This makes this case a blur
to some and a dark place to one. A miserable state where
a victim wants to finally vanish and be gone.
Some of the activities we do might have been
part of the cause of global warming in which its
aftermath is felt right now such as aggravate public
health illness and diseases which is timely and
relevant during this time. The government is not
solely at fault for these things. Each and every
one of us contributes to the cause, some
intentional, most are not. And in exchange,
everyone is affected. Eventually, people will be
truly alarmed by the consequences of our actions.
We must not wait until it is already too late to do
anything to solve the problem we are facing for
hundreds of years now.
Someone said that the world we lived in is not
inherited from our great grandparents instead, is
borrowed from our sons and daughters. We owe
it up to future generations to see the beauty of life
and earth as we have seen it.
People often ask the question, “what is love?”
There are a lot of possible answers to this question.
It could be an intense feeling of deep affection or a
great interest and pleasure in someone. Some people
even have sayings like “love is pain,” or “love is
blind.” Others may even answer that it is a feeling
that changes the way you see the world , or a
combination of passion, commitment, and intimacy.
There’s a high possibility that each person has a
different answer to the question. So how do we define
love? Is there only one meaning to it, or it depends
on who is asked?
A word I can connect with love is sacrifice. This
word means surrendering, giving something up, or
setting it aside for the sake of someone or something
else. Sacrifice is something that comes with love. In any
relationship, love is seen through the sacrifices of the
other person–no matter how big or small. Some sacrifice
time, money, or sacrifice something else for the benefit
of the other. The
sacrifices we make
for other people
can show the love
we have for them.
Sacrifice is a way I
define love.

of love is a deep

feeling. This feeling is different for each person. We
experience love differently, we express love differently,
and we feel love differently. People have different love
languages where they differ in the ways they express
love from others and would feel love from others.
Love is visible in different forms, felt by different
people, and shown in different ways. No matter what
form love is in, love is something the world needs and
should not be discriminated.
Why Movies Move Us
There are certain aspects in our lives that movies
can touch. One way or another, movies or films
give us endless opportunities to put ourselves in the
characters’ shoes and be that someone we can’t be in
this real world. The creation of films became more
advanced as technology innovates. Thus, giving more
depth to the film industry, making them more capable
of telling different stories in their unique ways.
Many people today would choose to watch movies
or series during their free time. Some would even bingewatch
shows that hooked their feelings. Have you ever
thought of why these movies, like series, make us thirst
for more? Despite our urge to know what will happen
next or how it will end, these pieces resemble our desires
in life. Maybe we can see ourselves in the character’s
life that builds a connection between us. Other people
find their interests because of these movies, leaving an
impact on their lives. But, for me, the greatest possession
of film is its ability to move one’s perspective towards
life.
Movies reflect our lives. Whether it’s in fiction,
documentaries, or narrative nonfiction, each genre has its
components that enable them to exhibit our similarities
and differences. This reflection was visible in America’s
history, where people dreamt of having a different
life because of the movies produced during that time.
Children started to have dreams to be successful in the
future. The 1920 American Historian Series entitled,
“Movies Become Big Business,” concludes that movies
played a crucial role in their social force.
Movies help us realize our own privilege. A lot
of documentaries that discuss different topics and
situations are produced to raise awareness on these and
to reach out to the audience as well. Other than that,
with the pandemic, I realized that watching films during
my free time is a privilege to have already. I see that my
parents are doing their very best at work to provide
for our family, other families worry about their shelter
and food, and our front liners are selflessly serving our
country. We are given the privilege to stay safe at home
and even binge-watch shows.
Movies make us think outside the box. Although
movies use captivating storylines and elements, it can
help us realize that reality is not always what we see in
movies. It breaks our daydreams and fantasies because
the reality is that the process before and after finding
your way is jammed with tests and hindrances. Somehow,
movies can stand as inspiration or warning signs for
us to look into our
lives and see things
that we missed out
on.
The greatest of
these all is movies
are crafted to move
you. Before the
pandemic, I always
experienced going

out of the cinemas
with a feeling of being a new person influenced by what
I just watched. Most especially, my interests are more
on historical and social issues, I always get the feeling
of being reborn to a new world, and through that, I
can dig deeper to build my stand or sometimes, shift
from what I used to believe. For me, movies played a
vital role in who I am today. We can be awakened by
these brave films as long as we choose to be awakened
by them.
In the end, it will always be up to you. Movies are created
for entertainment purposes, but sometimes they play a
greater role than that. They widen our perspective on
things and allows us to learn from them. Movies can
move not only our emotions, but us as people.

PREPARING FOR THE
SECOND WAVE
With a new semester opening up, another set
of preparations are being done both by learners
and educators in order to cope up with the
demands brought about by online learning.
Surely, the previous semester proved that the
new set-up of classes has not been easy for both
parties. Now, with the uncertainty of when
things will really go back to “normal,” it must
be ensured that improvements are being made to
alleviate the struggles that come with virtual
classes because if not, learning will not be evident
and all of everyone’s hard work will be put to
waste, therefore contradicting the whole purpose
of pursuing education amidst this crisis.
The pandemic forced everyone to suddenly
adjust from the normal classroom setting to the
current virtual set-up. A lot of adjustments and
preparations had to be made before starting the
new school year to ensure that students still attain
the education and knowledge that they need.
Trinity University of Asia (TUA) is one of the many
schools in the Philippines that had to prepare for
the challenges of the new school year.
Students and teachers alike had trouble
adjusting to this fairly new set-up. There is the
challenge of doing online classes with a slow internet
connection, balancing the life we have at home and
workload with school, fighting distractions during
class, and the draining hours of staring at the screen
while accomplishing tasks.
Naturally, students would mostly rely on their
educators for their learning. With the current virtual
classes, some students have been having a hard
time establishing the “teacher-student” relationship
wherein they can directly learn from their teachers.
Technology may have brought the opportunity
to conduct classes together virtually, but the
relationship of students and their teachers has
become different in this setting in the sense that
their interactions and connections are limited by
the virtual setting.
The new environment that online classes
created has also brought a new mindset for
students when it comes to learning. The virtual
classroom set-up is considered more flexible if one
was to compare it to learning face-to-face with a
teacher and other students. This flexibility is often
mistaken with complacency which can lead to
learners underestimating online courses and hence
they may not take it as seriously as they do in the
traditional setup.
Teachers on the other hand have gone through
different preparations to deliver quality education
to their students. One example is that faculty
members of TUA underwent Trinity-in-house
Teacher-formation Training (T3). Trinitian
educators had this series of training and workshops
before the first semester, and had another round
before the second semester began. With the theme
“Effective Quality eLearning and Online Distance
Education,” their 5-day long training was centered
on making the current online set-up better for the
students and ensuring that they continue to excel
through eLearning.
With the preparations Trinitian teachers did
before the first semester, online learning went
smoother than what was expected, considering
the limited amount of time to prepare for a whole
new set-up in learning. TUA now enters another
semester of online classes after the second round
of training and preparations the faculty members
did during T3. With that, the second semester is
expected to be better than the first using the
knowledge gained from T3 and the experiences
during the first semester.
T3 was an opportunity for teachers across the
university to improve in order to create a smoother
flow during the second semester. Faculty members
underwent sessions that helped improve the way
they dealt with psychosocial situations, which may
positively impact the learning of the students.
Other than this, they had a series of workshops and
training to find different platforms that may be
effective for online learning such as Microsoft
Teams.
As students though, we also have roles to fulfill
for the improvement of the second semester
because just like most things, this is a two-way lane.
We have expectations for our teachers but so do
they for us. All their efforts to help us, assuming
that what they have learned from these seminars
are reflected in the next semester, will be nothing
if we do not do our part. Just as our teachers who
continuously worked hard to make the transition to
online learning easier, students should reciprocate
these efforts by simply appreciating the hard work
they have done and actively participate in their
classes.
Educators and learners should be making team
efforts in order to make this adjustment to online
learning more successful. If we do not aim for
continual improvement during this period, efforts
of both parties to build a strong foundation for
the education of students in the virtual set-up
will be put to waste. Just like our mindset during
face-to-face classes, we should always work hard
towards better education for ourselves. Let us all
face this new wave stronger and more prepared and
overcome it together.
