What is the quality thatfirst attracted you to yourspouse?WRITTEN NOVEMBER 30, 2019John was not only good looking, he was very smart. He helped me get throughmath, that’s for sure. He was ambitious, too. I guess it’s impossble for me tochoose one quality that attracted me to him, but if I had to choose I’d say it was hisway of always knowing what he wanted and knowing how to get it.He knew he was going to college one way or another, even though it would havebeen hard for his family financially. He worked every summer, putting his moneyaway for school, and was able to cover every expense himself when he enrolled.He started at Auburn the fall after we graduated. This was right around the timethat the Korean war (never technically called a war) draft started happening, sohe was very motivated to get into a military program at college so he wouldn’t beimmediately drafted.He took an exam and was selected for the Navy engineering program starting hissecond semester, so they paid for the rest of his school. I think he saw it as a greatopportunity for help with school costs, plus a fast track to a good career and sometravel experience.Every summer they went on a cruise to train and work. Once he completed theprogram he was a Midshipman and was required to serve three years as an officerin the Navy.Being in the rigorous Navy engineering program didn’t stop him from having agood time while he was away at school. He loved to play poker. When he showedup at home on a motorcycle he’d won in a poker game he had to try to convince hismother that he’d saved up to buy it!
