From The Publisher
Well, hello Lennox Head. Here we are with our feet planted firmly
in 2021—yes we survived to tell the tale. But as you all know, I'm
not mentioning our previous year, for fear of doing a much worse
job than all the other commentators around.
In fact this year I'm focusing on my professional development and
I'm excited to say I've been accepted to do a visual arts diploma.
Now, ok, you are right, it's not a core subject of publishing, but
it's very important to my emotional wellbeing and I am a graphic
designer of sorts, so I need to know a lot about art!
I figure what's good for me is good for The Lennox Wave and
hopefully some of the things I learn will be reflected somehow
in the magazine, which, of course, will continue to get all the
attention and hard work it requires from me.
It's actually a very big moment for me, because as a young girl
of 17, I graduated from HSC top of my school in Art. Naturally,
I thought I'd make a career of it and I enrolled in a Fine Arts/
Bachelor of Education degree with a view to becoming an art
teacher.
But remember, I was not really an adult yet—that was yet to
come. In fact I was right in the middle of growing up, discovering
boys and alcohol and parties and fun.
So uni became my playground, and my downfall.
One fated Monday afternoon late in the second semester I went
to the uni bar with a boy and started drinking. Five hours later
I somehow managed to get to my late afernoon lecture, and at
some point in the class, I stood up and vomited in front of 200
undergraduated students.
I was so ashamed and embarrassed and humiliated that I fled
the room and never went back and depite my parent's constant
questions, I never told anyone what had happened.
I dropped out, just like that, got a job in a car yard, and went back
to enrol in English Literature at a different university two years
later where I laid the foundation for journalism instead. Which I'm
really happy about now, because English was my other love.
But to this day it still makes me squirm, especially when I think of
the poor person who had to clean it up.
So, now, over 40 years later, this enrolment is a kind of
redemption; a way for me to make it up to the universe and
myself, and complete the unfinished circle I started drawing in
1978. Wish me luck.
Lennox Head Residents’ Association
BY ROBYN HARGRAVE
Our final meeting for 2020 on 7 December was attended by
16 members and Cr Cadwallader.
Off-leash dogs. Reports are increasing of negative impacts on
native wildlife on the coastal reserve between Sharpes Beach
and Lennox Headland. Landcare volunteers described multiple
incidents of dogs wandering unsupervised into the regenerated
bushland and of wallabies being chased. These areas are
designated as dogs-on-leash but require additional emphasis
by way of signage, publicity and Ranger patrols to ensure dog
owners are aware of their responsibilities.
New Residents’ Committee will be determined at the AGM
on 1 March. Members with an interest in playing a key role in
the direction of the Association are encouraged to consider a
position. Contact details are below.
Seven Mile Beach, 4WDs and poor behaviour is an ongoing
problem likely to escalate during summer. Inconsiderate driving
continues to cause damage to the dunes, shellfish, nesting
birds and turtles and poses danger to pedestrian beach users.
The community is encouraged to contact Council Rangers
on 6686 1210 or 1300 864 444 to report offensive or
dangerous incidents, including vehicle descriptions.
Community Planting Day at Lake Ainsworth will be held
around March, hosted by the Association and co-ordinated by
Landcare. Readers are invited to support this event, assisting
with more local plants to help enhance and protect our Lake
foreshores.
Lennox Markets Council has invited the Byron Bay Community
Association to enter into a licence agreement for the
management of the Lennox Head Community Market.
A development application for a larger scale market of greater
than 30 stalls at Williams Reserve, Lennox Head will also be
prepared.
Sub Committees: Heritage Committee, Coast Care, Friends
of Lake Ainsworth (FOLA) and Boomerang Bags reported
a successful 2020, despite COVID challenges. Readers
interested in the rewarding roles these friendly but focused
groups hold in Lennox Head are encouraged to join them.
Contact details below.
Upcoming meetings: Mondays 1 March (AGM), 5 April and 3
May 2021 from 7pm in the CWA Hall.
Community Garden
Grows Thanks To Elders
THE
Lennox Community Gardens was delighted to receive a
generous donation from Elders Real Estate Lennox Head,
enabling the group to construct the first of 17 permanent
raised gardens beds, which will ultimately form the shape of a
leaf. The leaf design is modelled on the Jardins du Château de
la Chatonnière in France.
Since breaking ground in April 2019, the members of Lennox
Community Gardens have planted a wide selection of fruit
trees, including native bush tucker and several critically
endangered species. They also boast a range of bananas, a
bunch of which was presented to the team at Elders as a token
of appreciation. Team members now turn their focus more to
the production of annual crops which, in the absence of raised
gardens beds, they have been growing directly in-ground,
which can be a challenge for the less physically able.
Lennox Community Gardens welcomes everyone to get
involved, be it as a member or volunteer. The group is also
actively seeking local businesses or individuals to sponsor the
construction of more raised garden beds.
To demonstrate their progress so far, Lennox Community
Gardens will be holding an open day on Sunday 14 March at
3pm. All are welcome to attend.
Landmarks Of Lennox—Residents' Organisations
BY ROBYN HARGRAVE
In 1877 North Creek (NC) residents
(situated generally along NC and NC
Road) sought establishment of a school. 1
After the inaugural 1922 Lennox Head
(LH) Estate Auction and gradual growth
of a village at Seven Mile Beach, the
name LH appeared in residents’ groups.
Records reveal nine organisations
campaigned for issues including
‘a permanent maintenance man
for NC Road’ 2 (NC Progress Union
1923); a community recreation hall
(LH Public Hall Committee 1925); 3
general improvements in the village
(LH-NC Progress Association 1930) 4 ;
administration of LH Town Improvement
Fund 5 where Council deposited a
special rate levied on LH landowners
for basic infrastructure and services
(LH Advancement League 1955); 6
condition of facilities in the village (LH
Progress and Ratepayers Association
1957, 7 amalgamating in 1958 with
the Advancement League 8 ); plus
repairs, management (1968), update
or replacement of the Community Hall 9
(1979) by LH Social and Recreation
Club.
Organisations waned, until 1 October
1980 when business proprietors
formed LH Promotion Association. 10
In 1982 this became LH Residents’
Association which persevered but
without a president until 1988 when
Brian Smith volunteered for the position,
holding it for 19 years. The Association
incorporated in 1989 to ‘act in the
interests of LH residents and liaise with
any appropriate bodies or person to
further the development of LH’. 11
Brian’s dedication to LH, the
Association, working bees, Lake
Ainsworth reinvigoration and, of course
our Surfing Santas, was recognised in
2012 by naming the boardwalk for him.
Sub-committees were active, meeting
changing needs of the village since
1989 including Heritage, Working Bee
(now Coast Care), Library Support,
Rating System and Youth Anti-social
Behaviour (2008). 12 Today’s vibrant
sub-committees comprise Boomerang
Bags, Coast Care, Friends of Lake
Ainsworth (FOLA) and Heritage.
Here are a couple of snippets from locals who have sent their
feedback on memories of the weather shelter/Beach Pavillion
over its 70 years.
Colin Hodder: While the P&C meetings were held in NC
School, the shelter shed was the ‘gambling den’ for the ladies
who would meet there to play the dice game ‘Wog’ (mid
1950s). 14.
Fay Macdonald: We need shelter from all the elements, for a
Book Review
DARCI WALKER, RICHMOND TWEED REGIONAL
LIBRARY
Book: There Was Still Love (2019)
Author: Favel Parrett
Award winning author Favel Parrett
has broken hearts again with her latest
novel, There Was Still Love. A tale
of love and separation, and a family
connection that defies distance and
time. Set in 1980, shifting between
Prague and Melbourne, this story retells
the lives of twin sisters. Eva and Mana
were separated in 1938, during the
German occupation of Czechoslovakia.
The sisters' lives are narrated by
their grandchildren, jumping in time
and tense, the narrative defined by
memories.
Parrett has dedicated this novel to
the strong women who bind families,
for without their stories, there is not
history. Inspired by her grandmother,
who escaped Czechoslovakia to go to
Melbourne, Parrett wrote this book
as a fictional family history. Hopeful
that through family memories and
genealogical records – the few there
were – Parrett could learn about her
grandmother’s life. This story reminds
readers that some people don’t choose
to flee their country of origin.
Winner for the Indie Book of the Year
award (2020), There Was Still Love is a
moving and beautifully crafted historical
fiction novel.
January 2021 the property price cap has been increased to
$950,000.
construction industry include First Home Owners Grant
History Pops Up
Lennox Head Village was literally hacked out of the native
heath country from 1922 onwards after the first land auction.
Our pioneers were amazing, hardy folk and no challenge was
too great for them.
They built cottages, shops and community facilities from
demolished buildings and in some cases, transported entire
pre-loved structures over dirt roads from as far away as Casino.
They campaigned and raised funds for public amenities and
fire fighting equipment.
Check out stories of the Beach Pavilion, Bush Fire Brigade,
LaFrance fire truck and a classic landmark on the corner of
Byron and Ballina Streets, initially a garage, now Lois Buckett
Real Estate and Lennox Head Motors, free-of-charge this
month only in the Cultural Centre foyer.
Hospital Auxilliary
Is Back
The Ballina Auxilliary
fundraising stall in Lennox
Head before Christmas
raised $1,927.45 which
was a wonderful result for
the volunteers. They would
like to send a very big thank
you to the community for its
fantastic support.
The Auxilliary Kiosk in the
hospital opened on 1
February from 10am till
2pm (Mon to Fri) and 10 till
1pm on Saturdays.
COVID plans will be in operation and this may curtail members
of the public coming into the Kiosk to buy our craft. Therefore
if anyone would like any craft they should contact the
members of our executive. These details can be found on our
website: ballinahospitalauxiliary.simplesite.com.
Lennox Lions Club BY PAUL BRYANT
I’ll start with a note of appreciation first
and that is a special thanks to all who
have found us in recent weeks at Epiq
Marketplace and Reflections Holiday
Park. Thanks also to those two venues
for accommodating us. The last year has
been unusual to say the least but we
still have plenty of work to do so please
continue that support in 2021.
Youth of the Year is back on again but
with an important exception due to
COVID restrictions. We will be holding
our club final on Wednesday 24
February at 7pm in the Anglican Church
as usual. There will be distancing for all
attending. There will be no zone final
this year. Instead, the winner at the
club level will go straight through to the
Regional final.
That brings me to the Lens On Lennox
photo comp. which is on again this
year with a different focus. As has been
the practice in the past, the photos
selected will provide the basis for the
new calendar for the next year, which
will be the year Lennox Head celebrates
its important Centenary. So, the theme
will be Lennox Head: Then and Now.
You will find plenty of old photos on
our instagram page lensonlennox or for
enquiries, go to lensonlennox@gmail.
com.
With the 2022 edition, we want to use
your photos in a calendar that promotes
the character and history of our village.
Be creative in your approach. You
can access this site to also make any
enquiries you may have.
Entries open 22 March this year and
close on 23 May. We hope to announce
the winners at Love Lennox 2021
The Comedy Comune
Local travelling comedy club, The
Comedy Commune, set up and run by
Lennox comedian John Peacock, is
all set for another big year of bringing
the laughs to Lennox and beyond. The
Comedy Commune is a local business
based in Lennox Head. They curate and
promote stand-up comedy events.
John started The Comedy Commune as
a means to provide opportunities for up
and coming stand-up comedians. The
goal was to allow the chance to perform
on stage in front of a paying audience
alongside professional comics.
From the very first gig upstairs at the
pub, where he expected 30 people, set
the room optimistically for 80 and finally
started turning people away at 138, The
Comedy Commune has been a raging
success, consistently selling out.
'2021 looks huge for us,' John said.
'Our home town gig at the pub is set to
start up again, we’re constantly seeking
out new venues and our rooms in Ballina
are all still selling out. In fact the gig
at Two Hands Kitchen in Ballina has
sold out every performance in the four
months it’s been running. We’re looking
for a regular open mic room and our
open mic competition which kicks off in
March is gaining huge traction.'
Starting in March, The Comedy
Commune will be holding an open mic
competition at Seven Mile Brewing in
Ballina. It will be held over five monthly
heats with a final in August. Mandy
Nolan is already booked to headline the
final. Mandy is also providing 2 hours
mentoring/writing as one of the prizes
for the winner. There’s cash prizes and
a paid spot at an upcoming Comedy
Commune gig also in the prize pool.
Local businesses and venues with an
interest in supporting the local arts
and creative pursuits are encouraged
to contact John. There are sponsorship
opportunities available for the open mic
competition and the chance to host a
quality comedy event at your venue.
Australia Day Done Right
BY VIC LETO
No it wasn't quite the Australian Open tennis when Central
Coast visitors Warren 'Wazza' Peters and Monique Frendo
rolled into Lennox town with all the essentials, to put their own
spin on summer holidays.
The couple are renowned for their return serve, having been
here at the same time last year, in the same prime position
on centre court taking in all the best Lennox offers. This year
on the Australia Day weekend they won match-point for their
versatility with the coolest portable mini table-tennis set up
ever seen on the van travellers' circuit.
How To Write A Media Release
BAREFRUIT MARKETING
We’ve all been waiting for it, and finally
2021 is here. Over the holidays Lennox
has been buzzing with visitors. It’s been
fantastic to see local businesses being
supported after such a trying year.
Success stories are popping up all over
the place and if that’s you, it should
be part of your marketing strategy
to tell people about it. Social media
is great at spreading awareness, but
a story in the media, whether in a
newspaper, magazine or on the TV
or radio is unparalleled. Getting your
story ‘published’ is the best form of
word-of-mouth marketing you can get.
We refer to this as ‘earned media’ and
it is more trusted and credible to the
viewer than ‘paid (owned) media’ as it
is seen as unbiased. Naturally, people
get talking and before you know it, you
will hopefully see an impact on your
business in terms of customers and
sales.
When something newsworthy happens,
let the media know about it by sending
them a media release. Journalists are
busy bees, so when writing a media
release, there is a bit of a recipe to
follow to make their life easier.
1. A strong and informative title
The title is the first thing the journalist
will read, so it must clearly describe
your story, grab attention and not be
too long. This will become your email
subject when you send media release
out to publications. If it’s boring, the
email won’t be opened.
2. Your subheading is everything
Journalists receive hundreds of press
releases, so don’t have time to read
them all. Write a sentence or two that
sums up your story and this will become
your subheading. Make sure you answer
all the Who, Where, When, What, How
and Why questions.
3. Talk about the important things first
Your press release is not an essay. Like
a news article, you need to include the
most important and relevant information
towards the beginning. When you’ve
done this, you can go into more detail,
adding quotes and interesting facts
about your story.
4. Include photos with people in them
Send photos (with people in them)
along with your media release. Photos
make things more engaging for readers
and help them relate to your story. By
including a variety of photos that are
captioned, you’ll give your story a better
chance of being published.
5. Quotes are important
Boost the credibility of your story with
quotes from the business owners,
customers, members of the community,
whomever is relevant.
6. Your contact details
Often, journalists will want to get in
touch to organise interviews, take photos
or learn more. Include your contact
details so they can get in touch.
7. Boilerplate
Appearing at the bottom of every media
release, is an outline of your company,
products, services, awards and website
and social links.
And with that fine-tuned recipe, you’ll
have a media release ready to send to
publications. Happy writing.
Skate Park Art Installation.
Firstly, I would like to thank local artist Nitsua for his vibrant
mural at the Lennox Head Skate Park. Nitsua bravely pitched
his mural idea to Ballina Shire Council without having any set
image in mind, instead trusting that a design would develop
after listening to stories from our local youth. He fell in love
with a story of a young lad who has developed a friendship
with an octopus whilst surfing at Boulder Beach, which has
been incorporated as a main element of his design.
Clare had a 20-year break from sailing.
She is now proving to herself, her
daughter, and others (especially female
sailors) that you can fulfil your dreams at
any time in life. Clare is one of only two
female sailors to sail the powerful 18-
three in the world. She recently won the
18-foot skiff State Titles in Queensland
as part of a three person crew. She also
competed in the prestigious Sydney to
Surf Sisters
Kellie O'Brien
Where are you from?
I was born in WA and mostly lived in
inland locations, but both sets of my
Grannies lived by the beach and the
imprinting of a sea life started there.
In 1989 I travelled the east coast,
before finding a love of Lennox Head
(Ngyungbal area of Bundjalung country).
I remember falling in love with the
Pacific Ocean and the weather right from
the start.
What do you do when you’re not in the
water?
Beach walking and bike riding (not
the fluoro kind), snorkelling, yoga and
pilates. I work fulltime as a Foster Care
Case Worker in social services, along
with being the secretary and a founding
member of the Lennox Arts Board.
How long have you been surfing?
For over 30 years now.
Why did you take it up?
Because I couldn't see why not. I love
the beach, but I found it really difficult
as I was scared of the sea and a little
uncoordinated. The success of getting
something 'right' gave me a big stoke
so the addiction set in. I was lucky my
partner was becoming a surf coach, and
he had a view that girls can do anything
and so he was a great guide.
Apart from the joy of surfing the waves,
what else has surfing given you?
Surfing gave me a career and a passion,
developing the All Girls Surfriders Club,
the All Girls Surf Showdown event, the
Rusty Gromfest and our Lennox Head
Surf School business all came from a
love of surfing.
I wrote articles for newspapers and
magazines to promote and develop
surfing, I was a surfing coach, a level 3
surfing Judge, commentated the events
and worked in surf shops.
I also tried my hand in competitions
and got 2nd at the Australian Titles in
my division and won a Queensland title.
I‘ve been fortunate to mentor others
and support young people to realise
their dreams and I am in the Australian
Surfing Hall of Fame for administration
for supporting girls and young people in
sport.
Mostly though I like the community
around me that shares my common
goals and my passion.
Rebecca 'Betty' Cook is Ms February
STORY AND PIC BY VIC LETO
Birthplace: Mona Vale, Sydney
Family: Beryl, Zahara, Murray, Mo,
Skip
Occupation: Artist
Star Sign: Leo
Favourite Food: Mud crab with
chilli oil
Rebecca Cook's heritage evolved from
seafarers in the north of England's River
Tyne coastal region near Newcastle. The
extended family including a brother and
sister still live there. Rebecca's parents
immigrated to Australia and along with
her other brother and sister, they make
the first Aussie branch on the family tree.
Anything to do with the ocean and
the seafarer's influence has remained
with Rebecca throughout life. She can
so relate to the Tyne comparison, her
Sydney home town of beach-side Avalon,
and also the familiarity of home she feels
living in Lennox.
Growing up surrounded by Avalon's
similar surfing culture, Rebecca wasn't
so immersed in it (as she is now).
Instead, she was into the arts, literature,
photography, music and drawn to an
alternative lifestyle. Her first experience
on the North Coast was aged 14 visiting
and staying with friends at a Hare
Krishna commune in Nimbin. At 16 she
left school and moved out of home to run
a cafe. On her 18th birthday she found
herself in a group show at the Lightning
Ridge Festival performing fire dancing
and stilt walking.
Rebecca then
lived in NZ for four
years, one year on
the isolated west
coast of the South
Island and later in
Christchurch. Here,
she found herself
hanging out with
some very different
cultural and colourful
types far from the
'surfing and bikini
bodies' of Avalon.
In Christchurch she
studied Naturopathy
for a year, was totally
involved in music
and the punk scene,
even playing guitar and singing in an
alternative country band.
Back in Avalon by 22 she studied yoga
and shiatsu and commenced teaching
Japanese yoga. It was teaching private
lessons at the Quicksilver office which
led to a working adventure surf trip
to the Mentawai Islands in 2005.
After four years in Avalon, and five
months pregnant, she moved to North
Queensland's Daintree for three years.
Here, a friend, Anna Whiting and family
owned a holistic health retreat and
Rebecca taught yoga and ran a day spa.
By 2009 it was time to reunite with
her parents and sister already living in
Lennox for some years. Locally, Rebecca
worked at Riley Burnett for seven years
and also did a stint at Seed & Husk.
Four years ago she reunited with her
friend Anna and another lifelong friend
Jaymine Medlyn (who own Shemana
Elixirs) to make organic crystalline
skin elixirs. In 2019 after three years
studying at Byron School of Arts, she
graduated as a multi media artist.
Four years ago Rebecca made a
conscious choice to take up surfing
consistently and reached her goal of
surfing the point in 2020.
Hobbies: Growing food, cooking,
learning new things.
Best thing about life: Making time
for the things I will always happily
remember.
Worst thing: Rigidity and forgetting to
connect with nature.
Life Philosophy: Don't be afraid to live
simply.
Occupation: Cook at Freewave
Star Sign: Scorpio
Favourite Food: A good antipasto while taking in the cricket
Brenton Gay or BJ, has always loved his cricket but a knee
injury playing AFL spun his sporting life in a new direction
unpredictably turning like a Warney delivery.
BJ's uncle was part of the first AFL side in Queensland, his
dad played and BJ also was promising. He played cricket but
the football injury meant that during recovery he would be
forced to concentrate on the shorter indoor game and not be
out on a pitch all day.
BJ's Indoor Cricket took him to Under 18s representing
Queensland, later their Opens Men's side and he made the
U19s Australian side. Early In 2003 he played a World Series
in NZ, and late 2003, another series in Australia. The U19s
Aussie had a few wins, but even a loss (by just a couple of
runs) against the Australian Opens Men's team makes these
series something BJ can be proud of for the rest of his life.
In 2005 after numerous trips from Toowoomba to Lennox
visiting his sister, BJ decided to move here and worked in jobs
concreting and roofing. He had a couple of stints in England
where in 2006 he was playing cricket for Hythe in Kent.
And 2008, on a student visa found cooking when he started
studying Culinary Arts Management at university in East
Healing.
Returning to Lennox in 2009 he was offered an apprenticeship
at Blackboard, then worked at the Beef and Beach spending
about a year each at both. Then, following his sister again
who had moved to the remote Maningrida Community in the
Northern Territory, BJ on a visit, ended up staying for eight
years. He began running the nutrition program at the school
where the tuck-shop is named 'BJ's' in his honour.
By 2019 in the NT Eloise fell pregnant, and because she grew
up in Lennox it was time to move back home. BJ has been
the cook at Freewave since and the family bought a home and
live at Wardell. Apart from having a family, BJ rates the NT
experience as 'the best thing ever.'
You have to wonder if it were not for another injury sustained
in England in his prime, how far the fast bowler's cricket may
have gone. Even these days for Lennox he is still pretty tidy
having recently taken 5 for 6 (and made 64 with the bat). His
PB is 6 for 5. In closing out this innings (unlike Warney) I will
say BJ: 'can bat, can bowl.'
Hobbies: Cricket (nothing better than the Tests), fishing,
playing drums.
Best thing about my job: The smile of satisfied customers
brings a smile to my face.
Worst thing: Leaving the kids at home as you head off. The
heat in the kitchen.
Life Philosophy: Treat others the way you like to be treated.
Rubbish Tips
JEANIE MCKILLOP, COORDINATOR NORTH EAST WASTE
We talk a lot in the waste industry about composting and
recycling, in a bid to keep materials out of landfill, yet the best
way to reduce landfill is avoidance and this should always
be our first action. It can be difficult to totally avoid creating
waste, but we can reduce things like packaging with just a bit
of effort and some smart choices. As a society we too readily
accept what goods and produce manufacturers supply to us,
that is, products with excessive or unnecessary packaging.
Even the current trend in compostable packaging still doesn’t
address the issue of whether we need so much of it in the first
place. Importantly, if there is no option to recycle compostable
packaging, such as a green or compost bin, then it is best
avoided too.
If you really want to improve the sustainability of your
shopping, consider the way your food and products are
packaged. Packaging takes a lot of energy, water and other
natural resources to produce, and packaging waste pollutes
our air, water and soil. In Australia it makes up almost 30% (
82 million tons) of all the waste we produce.
Here are some easy ways to reduce packaging in our every-day
decisions:
• Choose unpackaged food whenever you can. If its
unnecessarily wrapped in plastic, like fruit and veg, leave it on
the shelf and send supermarkets a message. Some stores will
let you to bulk purchase food and home products using your
own containers.
• BYO containers and keep cups when buying takeaway, or
ask for just the sandwich wrapping, not the extra paper bag as
well. Better still, eat or drink in whenever you can. Takeaway
food tends to include a lot of packaging and unnecessary
waste.
• Compare products and choose unpackaged items, items
with less packaging, and concentrates whenever possible.
Support companies that have active policies to reduce their
packaging.
• Buy products in recyclable packaging and made from
recycled materials. This supports the recycling industry by
creating demand for the materials we place in our recycling
bins. Examples include recycled toilet paper, paper towels and
writing paper.
• Unavoidable packaging should be separated into glass,
plastic, paper and metal and placed in your kerbside
recycling bin. Soft plastics that can't be avoided can be
recycled at many supermarkets through the REDcycle program.
Cars Of Lennox
SHAN RAILTON
Since COVID there has been a massive resurgence of the
mighty Toyota Landcruiser. The combination of reliability,
functionality and old things being new again has seen so many
of the older models being restored above and beyond their
original condition. Old 'Cruisers are becoming work trucks
or adventure machines, this particular one really caught my
attention.
Make/Model – 2002 Toyota Landcruiser ute
Owner – Jake from Lennox
LW – This is far from a standard 70 Series Cruiser Jake, what
have we got here?
Jake – Yeah, a client of ours was looking to sell it. I couldn't
resist as it is obviously very functional but also a good
promotional vehicle. It had a very average gold paint job when
I bought it and it needed a new windscreen, suspension, the
list went on. I own TJM Ballina and Lismore so it became a
great project for our mechanics who did a fabulous job. I then
had it resprayed in satin black to match a few other cars in our
fleet. It also has the rare upgraded engine, that was a bonus.
LW – How about the six wheel set up?
Jake – Definitely not standard, Toyota never made a 6 wheel
option. Early in it's life it's original owner had it modified with
the extra axle and longer tray, it's really handy as it has a
much bigger load capacity. Also it's the main thing that gets
conversations started.
LW – Yes, the extra wheels set it apart for sure. How does it
handle?
Jake – Not as good as you may think, the extra axle is floating
so it's not a six wheel drive. This can cause it to slip in the wet
and mud, can be interesting.
LW – Does it get driven much?
Jake – Yeah, nearly every day either myself or one of my staff
has it going somewhere. We use it to transport spare parts
between our suppliers and shops, very handy little truck.
LW – So you're hanging on to it for a while.
Jake – No plan to sell it as it just fits our business so well but
as they say, 'everything is for sale for the right price'.
LW- Ha ha, yeah, fair enough. So we'll see the old gal hauling
freight for a while to come, thanks for sharing.
Jake – No worries. Thank you.
On Manopause
JOHN PEACOCK
We were talking the other day about things that happened
during a pandemic which will be come a part of every day life.
My wife seems quite keen on the whole 1.5m distance thing,
she suggested we keep that going long after everyone has been
vaccinated.
I wondered whether we would still have to check into
venues. Despite the obvious additional costs to businesses,
it’s probably not an entirely bad thing to know who was
in a particular place at a particular time, should it ever be
necessary to find out.
I was a bit of a fan of the COVID tracking app. Unpopular I
know but then again, I was in favour of one-way traffic in the
village and the bird sculpture in Byron. No wonder my wife
wants to keep her distance.
The issue with the tracking app of course was that I became
aware that whoever was tracking me; ASIO, ATO, or JONO
from Service NSW, they’d be judging me on where I went.
Thankfully being a comedian, I spend a good period of time
in pubs and restaurants performing, so at least it looked like
I had a social life. Apart from that though, I’m very much
get up, drive to work in the industrial estate and drive home
again. I don’t take my phone on my beach walks or to the
gym. Actually don’t take myself to the gym, but that’s another
column altogether. So it wouldn’t look like I was getting outside
at all.
I was going to pubs, usually dodgy pubs on a Monday night
and I was hanging around the industrial estate. I found myself
walking the streets of Wategos and the shopping strips in
Byron. I’d drive past golf courses and natural water holes. I’d
hang about in dark alleyways in Lismore and visit exotic crystal
shops in Mullumbimby.
All the time holding my phone out in front of like some form
of modern-day compass or divining rod. My arm hanging out
the window of the car, phone pointed at the sun. All so that
whoever was tracking me didn’t imagine for a second that my
life was boring.
Of course, as a result I became the subject of a Federal police
investigation on shifty individuals and my wife requested a
copy of my tracking report under Freedom of Information.
Turns out buying chips for lunch was the least of my problems.
Ocean Rhythms
STEVE SHEARER
Much more of a traditional summer this year, with the La Nina
phase of the ENSO cycle seeing more swell from the east and
some much appreciated moisture inflows. December's big rain
event was a damp squib for surf in this region. Stormy close
range swell from the ENE knocked the banks out at the Point,
hit the reset button everywhere really, and while there's been
some fun beach-breaks in the aftermath we're still a long way
short of where we were for most of last year.
Byron and Broken Head fared better. The Pass continues to
have a hall of fame sandbar with any little scrap of swell from
the east turned into white line fever. Of course you have to
deal with the twin threats of a crazy, clueless crowd in the
water and road rage in the carparks as people line up to get
a piece of the action. Is an 800m peeler from Spectators rock
to the Cafe worth the gruel? Personal tastes vary but for mine,
sometimes it's worth it.
An unseasonal long period south swell provided the best part
of a week of OK to good surf in the week from 17-23 January.
The deep Southern Ocean storm would have been better
served if we had a classic winter bank to make sense of the
long period lines but it was a great treat for local surfers to feel
some winter power. Slippery rocks that were moved around
during the December storm surf provided plenty of challenges
for rocking off with some hilarious kook-slams recorded during
the biggest days.
At time of writing the eastern swell window is heating up as
a strong monsoonal surge through the tropical South Pacific
fires up depressions which may become cyclones, both in
the Pacific and Coral Seas. A broad easterly tradewind fetch
will maintain a steady drumbeat of swell from the east as a
baseline during this time. It's a classic summer surf pattern.
Fishing was slowed up by all the dirty water for a month after
the rain event. It's very much on the improve now as clean,
warm blue water floods the area. This is firing up whiting and
dart on the beaches, flathead in the river and pelagics on the
close reefs and the FAD. Weather and swell depending the
fishing should only improve from here with the moderate flush
of the Richmond River being just what the Doctor ordered. As
long as we don't another major rain/flood event we should be
golden for pelagics as that warm blue water runs downhill hard
until Easter. Hope 2021 is a good one for you and yours. Tight
lines and tubular visions until next month.
Stay Calm & Keep
Loving Lennox
DEE DRISCOL, LENNOX SANCTUM
The way each of us as indivduals defines ‘community’ is
largely based on our own perception and the personal filter
with which we view the world we live in. My definition of a
community is a group of people sharing common interests,
belonging to a place in which we reside geographically and
sharing common values, customs, lifestyles or identities.
For so many of us the Lennox community represents a true
feeling of belonging and a deep love and appreciation for the
ocean and the amazing landscape in which we live and play.
Many of us remember a small quiet seaside village where the
waves were uncrowded and the parking in town was plentiful.
So, how as a community do we embrace a surge in
population? How do we handle the shortage of affordable
housing and a continued increase in cars on our roads? I
find the best way is to remember what values we share and
to understand that the paradise that is Lennox, is a very
appealing destination for people to migrate.
In order for us to grow as a community we must remember
what makes a community to begin with. Community is
sharing certain attributes and interests. Community is knowing
your neighbours’ names and offering support and friendly
conversation. Continued community is respecting each other
and embracing our differences, whilst still maintaining a strong
sense of who we are. In Lennox, community is respecting the
ocean and caring for the land which provided us with so much
joy and fulfilment.
Community is being considerate and ensuring that we maintain
a sense of sharing and not move towards an individualistic
ideology. Community is ensuring that you leave enough room
when you are parking to ensure that the cars next to you
can exit. Community is not paddling up the inside but taking
your turn in the line up. Community is ensuring that all your
rubbish goes into the bins provided and not into the ocean or
our streets. Community is being patient on our roads and not
becoming infuriated with the way people drive. Community is
slowing down in the main street and within our suburbs so our
children are safe to play and cross the road.
Each of us is responsible for the tone of the Lennox
community, collectively we create the social unit that is ‘us’
that is our ‘community’. As we welcome more residents to
our town and the urban sprawl continues, we need to ensure
our sense of community is not lost. Make the effort to engage
in conversation with each other, be kind and respectful and
gently remind each other what the genuine spirit of Lennox
Head community looks like.
Vet Watch
EVAN KOSACK
Painful Cats
No, not the pesky ones that dribble on
your face when you’re asleep. I mean
the moggies that are in chronic pain
which may have been overlooked.
Cats of course are quirky, independent
and slightly mysterious in their
behaviour. This tendency to have a poker
face can hide medical and quality-oflife
issues unless owners know what to
look for. There are times when changes
in an older cat's behaviour can signal
discomfort or indicate that all is not
well.
Attributing these changes to normal
signs of a healthy old age can be a
mistake. Often owners will notice their
old puss doesn’t like to be petted as
much, or doesn’t jump up as much as
earlier in her career. This can be a sign
of a condition that has been recognised
as widespread: feline arthritis.
Recent studies have shown up to 90%
of cats over 12 years of age had signs
of arthritis on Xrays, while other studies
indicate that up to 61% of cats over six
years old had arthritis in at least one
joint, and 48% in two joints.
Cats are skilled at hiding any signs
of illness, including arthritis, as this
would indicate weakness in the wild
and make them vulnerable to other cats
and potential predators. It's important
therefore to recognise the subtle signs
that your cat's quality of life may be less
than golden. These may include:
• Changes in hygiene; reduced time
spent grooming, a matted and scruffy
coat, inappropriate urination or
inconsistent use of the litter tray.
• Changes in temperament, increased
aggression to owners or feline
housemates, irritable when handled,
avoiding contact with owners or other
animals.
• Decreased activity, increased sleeping
time, reduced play, hiding or not
socialising, unwilling to explore inside or
go outside.
• Reduced mobility; reluctant to jump
up or down, making smaller jumps,
avoiding stairs, difficulty getting into a
littler tray or using a cat-flap, appearing
to have a stiff gait, occasional lameness
especially the front legs.
Arthritis is a complex disease. It cannot
be cured. However it can be reduced
and a cat's quality of life greatly
improved by following a multi-pronged
approach:
1. Weight control and exercise This
is the most important one. Medication
can assist in this, but commitment
from an owner is paramount. Reduced
body weight puts less stress on joints
and reduces pain and inflammation.
Encouraging play keeps joints mobile
and strong. Since fat also produces
pro-inflammatory cytokines, weight loss
directly assists in reducing joint damage.
And its ‘all natural’, inexpensive and has
no side effects.
2. Environmental Support. Provide
a warm, comfortable quiet, draft free
place to sleep, ideally with a heat pad
since older cats feel cold in temperatures
we think are fine. Provide steps or
something similar to allow access to
higher sites like the couch or shelves.
Get a larger litter tray with lower sides
for easy access. Place food and water
trays on one easy access level where
they don’t have to jump up or climb
stairs. Groom your moggy more often
and trim the nails regularly, as they often
become severely overgrown. Provide
non-skid flooring if possible.
3. Medication. There are many effective
medications that have been shown to
be effective and safe for use in cats. It
pays to remember however that many
medications that are generally safe in
other mammals like dogs and humans,
are dangerous for cats.
Some therapies include antiinflammatories
and analgesics,
Chondroprotective agents (ie those that
benefit joint cartilage) to stabilise joint
membranes and improve joint fluid
viscosity and cartilage regrowth, and
some nutraceuticals such as omega 3
and omega 6 fatty acids . Be aware
that some dietary supplements and
'natural' therapies can be, like any other
drug, potentially harmful and not much
research has been done to demonstrate
their safety or effectiveness in domestic
pets.
So, to wrap up, don’t assume that your
venerable old Puss is lethargic and
crabby just because he feels its his right
to lounge around directing everyone else
to do his bidding. He could in fact be
in chronic discomfort. And there’s no
reason he needs to put up with that.
Talk to your vet about your old cat's
mobility issues and get a plan to get
him back on deck and dancing like a
butterfly.
Expand Your Horizons
With Rainbow
Dragons
BY MONICA WILCOX
While globetrotting remains on the far horizon, dragon boating
with Lennox Head’s Rainbow Region Dragon Boat Club can
expand your local horizons.
Just add a very long boat, beautiful locations and a motivated
team of dragon boat paddlers.
Like kids, adults enjoy being active together and Rainbow
Dragons have the added bonus of connecting to your
community and twenty people per boat means there are plenty
of colourful characters to meet.
Meanwhile, our qualified coaches provide structured training
sessions and will get the best out of you within your capability;
no matter your age or fitness level.
You will be fitter than you ever thought possible, because
nothing motivates you more than being in a boat, surrounded
by Rainbow Dragons giving their everything. Time spent
training; regatta racing and socializing together also leads to
great camaraderie and long lasting friendships.
There is substantial evidence to suggest that dragon boating
improves cardiovascular health, endurance and strength,
reduces stress whilst boosting confidence, energy, sense of
achievement and pride. Many individual Rainbow Dragons
also speak of the psycho-social benefits of connection to
community.
Dragon boating is about creating a healthier community and
wider horizons. Rainbow Dragons encourage men and women,
of any age or fitness level to take up dragon boating in 2021-
Starting with five free training sessions. Contact us now and
join the fun.
All Girls Surfriders
Well 2020 was a very different year than expected, but
thankfully, we seem to be managing the COVID-19 threat quite
well in Northern NSW and we can now start planning for the
year ahead.
It was a difficult decision to cancel the All Girls Surfriders
club rounds for 2020, but the NSW Government COVID-19
regulations would have made holding club rounds very
restrictive.
2021 will see the celebration of our 30th birthday. It is a great
achievement for our Club and a great opportunity to look back
on the past 30 years and how far women’s surfing has come in
that time. We look forward to celebrating with you.
We’re planning to start the year with a get together at our
usual club meeting place for a social surf, sign on. It’s a great
opportunity to meet up with your surfing buddies and find out
the All Girls Surfriders plans for 2021. This will be held on
Saturday 6 February 9am to 11am.
Just a reminder that the Club rounds are held on the fourth
Sunday of the month, commencing on the 28 February 2021,
and will start with a very brief AGM, so that if you would like
to be more involved with the running of the Club we would
love to hear from you. There are lots of jobs to do, and it’s a
great way to make new friends.
Look forward to seeing you at a Club round.
2021 is shaping up to be a great year for LeBa boardriders
with a place in the Australian Boarders Battle Finals assured
after the Club took out first place for the North Coast
qualification round.
The Skullcandy OZ Grom Pro Junior is also scheduled to be
back on after the event was cancelled last year due to COVID
restrictions. With a growing number of frothing grommets
achieving great results in junior competitions, the LeBa juniors
are set for a super year of competition surfing.
The 2021 LeBa Boardriders season sign on will be held on 6
February at the Lennox pub between 12-2pm (there’s a burger
and beer $15 special on for members who can make it down).
The first club round will be held on 13 February with some
great prizes up for grabs again this year. Hope to see everyone
back in the water this year.
Lennox Longboarders
WAYNE BOOTH
Well, 2020 was a lean year for the club, to say the least, with
only one round.
We have our first get together for 2021 on Sunday 14
February, which is also our first Club sign-on day.
Meet at Lennox Main Beach at 730am, on the corner of
Ballina and Byron Streets.
We are a family orientated club founded in 1996 and focused
on Longboard surfing.
We run a Club round every second sunday of the Month. We
also conduct a Annual Longboard Classic in early August, a
competition that has been running for over 20 years.
We as a club are well known to our fellow Longboarding clubs.
2021 brings with it a new club trailer and some new
sponsorship. We welcome this support and thank all for your
contributions.
We have a Club website and email for info - www.
lennoxlongboarders.org and email -
club@lennoxlongboarders.org
More info on the Club mobile: 0423 139 559.
