03 | Annual Impact Report 2020

January 15, 2021

Dear Friends:

Researcher Brene Brown once wrote that somehow we’ve come to equate success with not

needing anyone. Many of us are willing to extend a helping hand, but we’re very reluctant to

reach out for help when we need it ourselves. It’s as if we’ve divided the world into “those who

offer help” and “those who need help. (The Gifts of Imperfection, 2010) The simple truth is that

the year 2020, taught all of us that we, in fact, need both.

As we continued to face political and economic challenges, the Tonganoxie community found

ways to share, learn, observe, and explore existing ways in a new world. For the Tonganoxie

Public Library, the approach was to find ways to promote change, uplift families, and build a

stronger community by providing programming, free resources, technology, and overall access

to library services.

Looking back on 2020, it was a big year for the community as we moved into a brand new

library facility. We acknowledge the vision, leadership of the staff, Board of Directors, Library

Foundation, and the Friends of the Library to advance the library into the 21st century.

Together, we built momentum by adapting and looking forward to the future.

To our dedicated community of patrons, supporters, and volunteers, we are so grateful to work

with you! As you turn these pages, we hope you share our pride in everything we achieved in

2020, with and because of your valued partnership.

Sincerely,

Nicole Holifield, MSW, MLIS

Tonganoxie Library Director

04 | Annual Impact Report 2020

Due to the limitations brought about by the 2020

pandemic, something we missed the most this year at

Tonganoxie Public Library was the sound of singing and

the squeals of excitement and laughter provided by

toddlers during our in-person Storytimes and Toddler

Times.

EARLY LEARNING

Ms. Susan, however, was able to "visit" the toddlers at

home through the magic of virtual and recorded

storytimes. Complete with puppet friends, familiar songs,

quality read-aloud, and more, the Storytime Anytime

programs were an important link to literacy, learning, and

the power of imagination with squeals and laughter intact.

Other programs for early learning that transitioned away

from in-person attendance included our Kids Art Club,

STEAM grab and go kits, 31 and Done Fall Reading

Program, and the Adventure Kids Book and STEM Club.

The library services are designed to meet the needs of

individuals in the community and encourage a

commitment to life-long learning. With a sudden and

substantial increase in children being educated at home

through virtual or home school, parents have requested

additional support.

SUPPELMENTAL RESOURCES

In response to this, the library now has an Educational

Services section. This section includes items for Reading

instruction, levelled readers, interactive books, hands-on

learning, math manipulatives, and STEM Challenge kits.

Nearly 200 educational items have been added to our

collection which offer teachers and parents support in

instructing our early and primary learners.

ADULT CONNECTIONS

Tonganoxie Public Library strives to offer our adult community a place to learn, have fun, and

thrive. The Mad Hatters Tea Club met virtually for members to sample new teas and learn from tea

experts. Pandemic Book Clubbers were able to escape the realities of 2020 as they met virtually to

discuss light-hearted reads. Adults were excited to participate in our Summer Reading and Fall

Reading programs, as well. The year started with in-person Art Night Out and Wig Out with Bob

Ross, and now adults are receiving art instruction through Facebook live.

Our adult community gave a resounding heartfelt response to our annual Angel Tree drive to

provide hundreds of gifts for the elderly community.

Flu Shots, tax help, blood pressure checks, and Medicare help were among the services the library

offered through Council for Aging and Visiting Nurses.

SUMMER LEARNING

Every summer Tonganoxie Public Library offers an eight-week

literacy program designed to precipitate the joy of reading and

increase academic achievement for readers of all ages and abilities.

In the summer of 2020, the Imagine Your Story Summer Reading

Program rose to the unique challenges of the year.

Participants could register, track their reading, earn prizes, and

complete challenges online. Socially distanced outdoor events,

virtual programs, and incentives to read were designed for specific

age groups, as well as families.

Families scoured Tonganoxie to locate an elusive Darth Vader.

Professional storyteller Priscilla Howe entertained listeners during

three age-specific programs. Children 6-18 could choose from six

Zoom book clubs that provided participants with quality literature,

lively discussion, interactive crafts, and STEM activities. The

Community Mystical Garden welcomed many visitors who came to

sneak a peek at a bridge troll or add their own mystical decorations.

The community at large expressed their appreciation for the library

providing a "wonderful educational program" with the "best ever"

activities, even though the challenges of the pandemic.

We cannot thank our sponsors enough for their support and

generosity in not only helping us to provide this vital educational

program but also an uplifting breath of positivity to the community.

A CELEBRATION OF THE

The Library Foundation, or as we like to call them the "Magnificent

Seven" was pleased to reach their goal of raising over $175,000, and

on the evening of Thursday, March 5th, 2020, there was a celebration

of the hard work and generous donations from this selfless and

supportive community. The food was provided by the 1866 Bar and

Grill.

NEW LIBRARY

The raised funds helped to purchase additional book shelving,

furniture, self-checkout, audiovisual equipment, laptops, and other

fixtures throughout the new library. The sales tax proceeds or

funding from the city were financed through bonds and could only be

used for the cost of the land and construction of the building. In

essence, the library is the tenant of the building and therefore

responsible for purchasing furniture and furnishings.

The Library Foundation is it's own 501 (c) 4. If there is interest in

joining the group, please contact Jill Breuer, President, at

jillbreuer@rocketmail.com.
