ORANGE CITY — The annual 5K Orange City Turkey Tro took

place on Thursday, Nov. 28, at Trinity Reformed Church.

The run is a fundraiser for Trinity youth mi sions, and this year,

also split proceeds with My Choice, a middle-school teen ministry.

The 2019 race saw 178 runners and raised nearly $4600 to be

split between the two organizations.

The men’s overa l winner was Ian Wiersma with a time of 18:00,

and the women’s overa l winner was Taylor Ten Pas with a time of

20:50.

ORANGE CITY — The Dutch Heritage Boosters are cu rently

conducting their annual campaign to gather funds and

gifts for enhancement of Dutc heritage in the Orange City

community.

The Boosters are a non-profit organization that has helped

to maintain and celebrate the town’s Dutch roots.

As a component of their campaign, DHB is also soliciting

volunteers to partake in the organization’s mi sion. The

organization is spearheaded by volunteers who spread the

town’s heritage through events such as Sinterklaas Dag in

December, the Dutch Heritage Walk and Parade of Flags

during Tulip Festival and the preparation of the traditional

Dutch treat, poffertjes.

Since 1986, DHB has maintained two historical buildings:

The Li tle White Store and The Century Home.

Over the decades, the buildings have aged, therefore a

percentage of the funds gathered during the campaign wi l go

toward repair and maintenance of the buildings.

MAURICE — Lane Mars, of the Sioux County Regional Airport,

reca ls tha the coolest plane he’ seen land a the airport in

the year since it’s been in operation, was a rare, one-of-a-kind

aircraft fueling on its way home from the Oshkosh Air Show in

Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

“It was litera ly two planes pu together by the owner,” Mars

said. “The left wing and tail of one plane was a tached to the

right wing and tail of another plane.” Mars shook his head. “The

plane was flown by one pilot, with the other cockpit left empty.

“The dual plane uses a piston engine, but he also put a jet

engine underneath it,” said Mars. “He uses the jet engine in his

airshow performance. That was rea ly something to see!”

Offering charter service, aircraft rental, flight instruction

and maintenance, the airport (signed KSXK) ha seen traffic

counts on a continual uphi l trajectory since the FAA offica ly

published it on its charts this past spring.

It was finalized with no e rors in July.

“If you think we’re just a li tle local airport, that’s inco rect,”

said Mars with a smile. “The airport has seen traffic from

Maryland, Washington State, Chicago, Arizon and Michigan,

with a lot more je traffic than anticipated.”

The heaviest usage is from July to the end of August, with 75

or more operations a day. Tuesday through Thursday is their

busiest time of the week, thanks to a l the busine s traffic.

And, even during this time of the year, they wi l see 15 to 20

operations a day.

This is partly due to the 24-hour, self-service fueling facility,

which stocks jet fuel and aviation gasoline.

“It’s not unusual for people to land at night, get fuel, use the

little

local airport

It’s

not a

restrooms and lounges, and head back out,” Mar said. “We

also have a rental car for them to use if they wan to go into

town.”

The hangars are sti l fu l. Three Sioux County busine ses and

an Arizona busine s own their own hangars, leasing the land

underneath. There is some hangar space available, thanks to a

speculator who put up a hangar. He sold two out of the three,

so one is left yet for him to se l.

The 24 individual sta ls owned by the airport are a l

contracted.

Multiple spraying busine ses make their home at the

airport, along with private aircraft ownership.

“We can do a lot more than people imagine,” said Mars. “As a

ma ter o fact, there’s not much we can’t do!”

The airport boasts seven fu l-time pilots, one part-time pilot

and four fu l-time mechanics: Airport Manager Randy Vander

Weide, Tim Ter Haar, Chris Van Ginkel, Andrew Schreier, Kevin

Harthoorn, Brandon Muhs, Bruce Van Beek, Mark Evans, Steve

Mei sner and Mars work to keep the airport running.

A general flight instruction school is offered from January

to March. The airport offers complet engine changes, does

annual inspections, interior remodeling, and light avionics

(replacing instruments in the pilot’s panel). Mechanics are

cu rently working on four planes.

“We are proud to say tha the Tulip Festival Fly-in Breakfast

is held here now,” Mar said. “Thousands of people come in

that Saturday morning for a free-wi l-donation breakfast. How

many planes come in is directly dependent on the weather,

of course. We are looking forward to having it again this year.

“With the trajectory of operations continuing to climb, I

see even more growth and development here,” said Mars. “I’m

looking forward to seeing wha the next year brings!”

SIOUX COUNTY — LifeServe Blood Center is asking eligible

blood donors to ro l up a sleeve and give the gift of a unit of

blood.

The standard bloo donation proce s takes an hour, with

the actual blood co lection procedure only lasting about 10

minutes. One donation can save the lives of as many as three

local hospital patients.

Five blood drives have been set for Sioux County.

The Hospers community blood drive wi l be held on Monday,

Dec. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. a the Community Center.

The Orange City community bloo drive wi l be held on

Thursday, Dec. 12, from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at American

Reformed Church.

The Hu l community bloo drive wi be held on Tuesday,

Dec. 17, from noon to 6 p.m. a the Hu l Public Library.

The Rock Va ley community bloo drive wi l be held on

Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Faith

Reformed Church.

The Sioux Center community bloo drive wi l be held on

Thursday, Dec. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Centre Ma l.
