He thenjoined the Signals in Pretoriaand went to Egypt,” she said.Van de Vyver was capturedat Tobruk on June 20 1942and spent 15 months as aprisoner of war in Italy. He waseventually released by Britishtroops on September 24 1943.“We grew up hearinginteresting war stories . Dadnever missed Moths(Memorable Order of TinHats), Rememberance Day orTobruk Night as these sreimportant days for him.“He wrote a diary for each ofus children which we treasure,”said Allen.Van de Vyver returned fromactive military service in 1945and went on to join the KeiRoad Farmers Association(KRFA). The NPOworks with schools in remoteareas that are in quintiles 1 to 3.It has donated sanitarytowels to more than 500 girlswith enough supplies to lastthem for three months, andmore than 100 hygiene carepackages for boys and girls.“This week, we are focusingon the health and wellnessfactor where we distributeschool shoes and shirts andsanitary towels,” Nkwelo said.“We hold boot camps andself-defence classes, as childrenneed to know how to protectthemselves from tragic eventslike gender-based violence andhuman trafficking.”The NPO is partnering withVodacom Business and Nkwelosaid the products were allsponsored by Vodacom.“In order for us to achievewhatever goal we want to reach,we approach big companies, asthey are the ones with the fundsto help reach that goal.”Exhibition for a Child hascollected 178 pairs of schoolshoes, which will be distributedto needy pupils at eight schoolsacross the province.“We did not want to focusonly on the girl child, but onboys too. Bullying is rife inschools. Some learners arebeing bullied because theycannot afford hygiene products.A child’s confidence getsdiminished when they areteased by their peers. Thesechildren are brilliant and arepassionate about theireducation, but they are pulledback by their situation at home,”Nkwelo said.Addressing the beneficiariesand teachers at DalukukhanyaSenior Primary, she urgedparents and teachers not todeprive children of their right toeducation because they lackedpersonal hygiene products.“Please reassure them sothey are not embarrassed if theirmenstrual cycle has arrived, orthey do not have any deodorantor body lotion.”The principal, SkhumbuzoWilson, expressed gratitude forthe donation of basic essentials.“We are a no fee-school, assome of the pupils’ parents areunemployed. This initiative isgoing to make a huge differencein [the pupils’] lives, as theycome from difficultbackgrounds. We have beenlonging for this, as the pupils’academic progress is affectedby these things.”Wilson said Exhibition for aChild had promised to assist theschool in starting a gardeningproject, where pupils wouldbenefit by gaining a skill inagriculture, as well as by beingable to take the vegetableshome. - DispatchLIVE
