CONCERT INFORMATION

Dear LSO family,

ANN CHANG PLAYS MOZART.............10-13

During this season when we are only able to fit

a small percentage of our orchestra onstage due

to the constraints of physical distancing, LSO has

made the commitment to continue to pay every

musician their full salary, even though they can’t

all fit onstage. Your annual fund support will

allow us to honor this commitment. Below are

comments from a few musicians about how much

this means to them:

• “LSO’s commitment to and support of our

family of musicians has been a cornerstone of the

organization. Nothing shows this better than the

incredible step that LSO has taken in paying all

the musicians this year. It is such a beautiful thing

- it brings tears to my eyes to think of what this

means for us all.”

• “Kudos to LSO (and especially to LSO’s loyal

donors) for making sure LSO is in a financially

secure position to be able to do this. You guys

blow us away.”

• “During this trying and stressful time for everyone, we’re so grateful for LSO’s support. It is

truly remarkable.”

• “I LOVE this orchestra!! I am so grateful to LSO for making such an effort to keep all our

musicians employed. We really appreciate it.”

• “It means so much to me that our symphony family is really looking out for its musicians. In

an age where arts organizations are really struggling, I love that LSO is so worried about our

musicians’ well-being. Thank you so much!”

• “This isn’t only about compensation; it sends us a message that our community values the

arts and values us and wants to see us get through this pandemic. It’s been hard on us not

playing together; it chips away at the essence of who we are. And when this pandemic is over,

we will be bursting with joy to get on that stage and share our gifts with you.”

EDWARD POLOCHICK, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Edward Polochick, Music Director of Lincoln's

Symphony Orchestra since 1998, has expanded

LSO’s music series through innovative classical

music programs, family concerts, pops concerts,

and July 4th events like the Uncle Sam Jam.

For 31 years, he served as Artistic Director of

Concert Artists of Baltimore, an all-professional

chamber orchestra and vocal ensemble of eighty

musicians which he founded in 1987. Maestro

Polochick served on the faculty of the Peabody

Conservatory of Music in Baltimore from 1979

to 2020 in a multitude of conducting positions

including Associate Conductor of Orchestras,

Director of Choral Ensembles, and Opera

Conductor. Not only is he widely recognized as

a conductor, but is an award-winning pianist

and harpsichordist and regularly conducts from

the keyboard with Concert Artists, the Baltimore

Symphony Orchestra, and Lincoln’s Symphony

Orchestra. He has also appeared as piano soloist

with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los

Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the direction of

Sir Neville Marriner.

Since winning the first Leopold Stokowski

Conducting Award in 1978 and, as a result,

conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, he

continues to attract world-wide attention as

an orchestral, choral, and operatic conductor.

In addition to conducting the Philadelphia and

Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, his guest

appearances include the Houston Symphony,

Chautauqua Symphony, the Opera Company

of Philadelphia, Omaha Symphony, Jacksonville

Symphony, Charleston (SC) Symphony

Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony (Denmark),

Daejeon Philharmonic (South Korea), St.

2

From 1979-1999, Mr. Polochick was on the

conducting staff of the Baltimore Symphony

Orchestra as Director of the Symphony Chorus,

founder and director of the Baltimore Symphony

Chorus Chamber Singers, and frequent guest

conductor. During his tenure with the BSO, he

established annual Holiday Pops and Messiah

performances which have remained Baltimore

holiday traditions for nearly three decades. In the

summer of 1987, Mr. Polochick was conductor

of the Musicisti Americani Summer Festival

in Sulmona, Italy. In the autumn of that same

year, he conducted the Peabody Symphony

Orchestra in Moscow, the first appearance of

an American student orchestra in the Soviet

Union. In recognition of the Moscow tour,

Mr. Polochick received an ASCAP Award for

Adventurous Programming of American Music.

In 2000, Mr. Polochick received the Peggy and

Yale Gordon Achievement Award and was made

an honorary member of the Baltimore Music Club.

Two years later, he was awarded the coveted

Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumnus

Award. In 2004, he was named Baldwin Scholar at

the University of Notre Dame of Maryland where

he held lectures, demonstrations, and panels on

the creative act of music. He was awarded the

‘Keys to the City’ by Lincoln’s Mayor Coleen Seng

in 2007, and in 2010 received a commission

from Nebraska Governor David Heineman as an

Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. In 2011, he was

the only American to serve as an adjudicator for

the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition

in Caiazzo, Italy.

Mr. Polochick is frequently asked to share his

knowledge and love of music at various lecture

series, adjudications, and radio broadcasts. Each

year renowned broadcaster, Marc Steiner, invites

him to co-host his radio program in Baltimore,

celebrating music of the holiday season. He is

also a regular panelist on Face the Music, a radio

review program of recordings hosted by Jonathan

Palevsky of WBJC-FM, Baltimore. For nearly two

decades, he and Mr. Palevsky have been cohosting

WBJC’s annual Christmas Program.

Although Mr. Polochick resides in Baltimore, he

considers Lincoln to be his second home. On each

visit he contributes to the community through

LSO’s public performances, school visits,

workshops, master classes, and other educational

activities, making classical music accessible to

everyone in Lincoln.

MOZART: EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK

This effervescent serenade for strings is

one of Mozart’s most popular works. Mozart

(1756-1791) wrote Eine kleine Nachtmusik in

1787, the same year as his masterful opera,

Don Giovanni, two string quartets, and the

marvelous A major Violin Sonata (K. 526).

This was also the year that Mozart’s father,

Leopold, passed away, and though Wolfgang

wrote relatively little during the following

months, these works are some of his most

profound and memorable.

Serenades originated as evening songs

for courtship, but by Mozart’s lifetime, had

evolved into multi-movement chamber

works to accompany outdoor social events.

Eine kleine Nachtmusik was undoubtedly

written for such an event, and judging by its

charming character, the event must have been

exuberant and festive.

Though the work originally comprised five

movements, the first minuet has been lost,

so the extant four-movement structure

recalls a small symphony of the time. The

first movement opens with a dazzling

fanfare and features a cheerful dialogue

between high and low strings, highlighting

the facility and intricacy of the ensemble with

broadly contrasting dynamics and graceful

ornamentations. The gentle Romanze harkens

back to the serenade’s origin as a courtship

song, with a briefly suspenseful interlude.

After a dashing minuet, which conjures

images of dancing in courtyard gardens, the

work closes with a vivacious rondo whose

melody comes from a popular Viennese song

12

of the time.

Louis Biancolli called the work “compact and

faultlessly balanced … with beautiful melodies

woven into a highly polished fabric.” Indeed, it

is easy to tell why this delightful work has

stood the test of time. Simultaneously

effortless and sophisticated, it conveys an

outpouring of joy with the fluent simplicity that

defines Mozart’s work.

STRAUSS: SERENADE FOR 13 WINDS

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) grew up in

a musical household. His father, Franz,

served for nearly 50 years as principal horn

of the Bavarian Court Opera, where he

premiered the colossal operas of Richard

Wagner’s Ring Cycle and other iconic works

of the late German Romantics. Critics and

colleagues of the time praised Franz Strauss’

virtuosity as a horn player, and one can

easily imagine his prowess considering the

brilliant and demanding horn solos Wagner

included throughout his works. Perhaps more

surprising, therefore, is that Wagner and

Franz Strauss disagreed bitterly on everything

and enjoyed a mutually cold professional

relationship. Franz disliked Wagner as a

person and disliked his music even more,

preferring the simple classical style of Mozart,

Haydn, and early Beethoven.

Throughout his life, influences of Mozart as

well as Wagner are plain in Richard Strauss’

work, which eventually developed into an

unambiguously modern style. Best known for

his program music, Strauss had a particular

ability to evoke imagery through the orchestra,

each instrument’s voice contributing to a vivid

palette of colors.

The classical influence that his father admired

shines through in Richard Strauss’ Serenade

for 13 Winds. Written at the age of seventeen,

the simplicity of this single-movement work

recalls the peaceful andantes of Mozart or

Mendelssohn, and yet a lushness and warmth

infuses it with unmistakable romanticism.

Beginning with a sweet oboe melody and

ending with a gently-rising flute gesture, it

isn’t difficult to identify this composer as the

same person who would produce the tender

expressiveness of Der Rosenkavalier or his

late Four Last Songs. The richly-woven colors

of his wind writing, as well as strident calls

from the horn section, foreshadow the

CLASSICAL ANN CHANG PLAYS MOZART

distinctive texture and heroic lyricism of the

tone poems and operas that would define

Strauss’ career.

MOZART: PIANO CONCERTO NO. 20 IN D MINOR

Mozart composed fifteen piano concertos

between 1782 and 1786 while living in

Vienna. His Concerto No. 20, the D minor (K.

466), was completed in 1785 and premiered

the very next day with the composer as

soloist. Mozart was wildly popular in Vienna

at this time; audiences raved over his works,

especially when he performed them himself,

but this concerto remained popular well after

Mozart’s lifetime. It endured through the

early decades of the Romantic era thanks

partly to frequent performances by Ludwig

van Beethoven. In fact, to this day, it is often

published and performed with Beethoven’s

own cadenzas.

This work stands out in the Mozart catalogue

because it is one of only two piano concertos

in a minor key. Perhaps its brooding tension

and anxious turbulence helped endear this

piece to romantics, as well as set it apart

from Mozart’s dozens of delightfully sunny

concertos. Mozart also produced this piece

at a time when he began to develop as a

composer, incorporating more wind lines and

complex musical character. He would soon

produce the “Prague” symphony and The

Marriage of Figaro, some of his most mature

and well-admired works. The K. 466 concerto

displays the same newfound maturity in

its integration of the solo instrument and

orchestra, character contrast in all three

movements, and lingering tragic undertone.

The work opens with churning violins and

agitated low strings. The first movement

follows the double-exposition pattern common

to concertos of Mozart’s time, with phrases

announced by the orchestra in D minor

and then F major, followed by elaborate

restatements by the solo piano. Throughout

the movement, orchestra and soloist battle,

coming to a close with no clear winner.

The B-flat major second movement, marked

Romanze, begins as the title suggests—with

poetic themes introduced by the piano.

However, a G-minor outburst interrupts the

movement and gives way to virtuosic scale

patterns by the soloist which would normally

only be expected in fast movements of a

concerto. The finale storms in with boldness

and force. Its relentless menace calls to mind

Mozart’s most impassioned works, such as

Don Giovanni or his minor-key symphonies.

Like Don Giovanni, this concerto’s finale

concludes with an abrupt shift to D major, a

stunning burst of light at the end of unceasing

conflict.

A NOTE FROM ANN CHANG ON THE

CADENZAS BY MALCOLM BILSON:

A cadenza is a virtuoso solo passage inserted

into a movement in a concerto, typically

near the end. Some composers wrote their

own for performance, while others (like this

concerto) lack Mozart's own composition.

Several famous composers have written

cadenzas for this piece, including Beethoven,

Brahms, and Hummel. While they are

wonderful and widely performed (especially

Beethoven's), I have chosen to perform the

stylistically authentic cadenzas written by a

prominent American pianist and musicologist

specializing in 18th- and 19th-century music,

Malcolm Bilson (b. 1935).

His celebrated recording of the Complete

Piano Concertos of Mozart, in collaboration

with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the English

Baroque Soloists (Archiv) features only

original Mozart cadenzas where available. For

the Concertos lacking a cadenza by Mozart,

Mr. Bilson composed his own. By choosing the

perspective of keeping with the composer's

style instead of "modernizing" to one's own

period or style, Mr. Bilson's cadenzas are truly

"Mozartian" and delightful.

In 2005, I became fascinated by the Classicperformance-practice

of master composers of

the period like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven

through teachings and performances by Mr.

Bilson. The instrument of the period is known

as a fortepiano. Its wooden frame is in stark

contrast to the modern piano we know today,

which has an iron frame to which the strings

are strung. The resulting quicker decay of

sound produces clarity of phrasing and affect,

not organically possible on the larger, longerresonating

modern instrument.

I was fortunate to hear the sounds produced

by the fortepiano, or as Mr. Bilson calls it, "a

native speaker," by studying the rare Mozartreplica

fortepiano which exists today in the

Glenn Korff School of Music. My goal tonight is

to translate this language through the modern

Steinway and to express my gratitude for the

brilliance of Malcolm Bilson. I owe you

everything.

MEET THE MUSICIANS

LINDSAY WILEY, OBOE

What advice do you have for someone who

wants to learn your instrument?

Make sure to get private lessons! Oboe

is tough but really rewarding if you have

someone to guide you from the beginning.

Also, reed-making is something you will likely

experience if you play it through high school

and definitely beyond!

Tell us about your pre-concert routine.

I LOVE to go eat pho, which is a Vietnamese

noodle soup, a few hours before a concert.

Gets the brain functioning and centers me for

optimum focus. I also like to seclude myself

from others and run the music through my

head instead of practicing with the oboe.

What orchestral work have you never

performed live, but have always wanted to?

I would absolutely love to perform Mahler’s

Das Lied von der Erde. It has beautiful

woodwind lines, especially for oboe and

English horn.

What is your favorite popular artist, band, or

genre?

Radiohead has to be one of if not my favorite

non-classical artist out there. So many it’s

hard to choose, and I love lots of artists from

lots of genres, so not sure I can pick one

genre—but old-school hip hop is definitely up

there!

Tell us about your favorite memory from

working with LSO.

I had the opportunity to perform Respighi’s

Pines of Rome on English horn, which has a

super cool solo in the final movement I got to

perform with my LSO family a few years ago.

It was magic!!!

KIMBERLY BEASLEY, HORN

What advice do you have for someone who

wants to learn your instrument?

Music should be fun. Horn should be fun. Treat

the horn as an extension of yourself and

sing through it in whatever fashion speaks

to you. It can be hard work too, but each

breakthrough in skills opens a new world of

musical experiences.

Tell us about your pre-concert routine.

My pre-concert routine is easy: 1. Put the horn

together. 2. Blow a couple notes through the

little end to be sure sound comes out the big

end. 3. Head for the stage, but don’t forget the

music in your case.

What orchestral work have you never

performed live, but have always wanted to?

Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony. Fun horn

parts, fun everything parts … it just makes me

happy.

Tell us about your favorite memory from

working with LSO.

I absolutely love this orchestra, so almost

every opportunity to play with LSO becomes

a favorite memory. I'll pick two instead. One

was a concert at St. Paul's. The program

featured a bunch of beautiful solo/melody

lines doubled between principal cello and

3rd horn (thank you composers!), and I got to

soloistically blend with the cello sound much

of the evening—very satisfying. The other

was a Halloween concert several years ago.

I got to dress up in my mother's wedding

dress and "process" every time I entered or

left stage as if walking down the aisle. Making

Ed Polochick crack up and almost lose it as

he looked back and realized he was cueing a

bride was worth the effort. Seeing my dad's

reaction to his daughter wearing his wife's

wedding dress on stage was priceless too.

MEET THE MUSICIANS

ELIZABETH GRUNIN, CELLO

What advice do you have for someone who

wants to learn your instrument?

Get a good teacher, someone who will do a very

thorough job with posture and arm placement.

Tell us about your pre-concert routine.

Before the concert I check my clock about five

thousand times to make sure I am on time, and

panic about maybe getting the time wrong, and

worry about a time change. I call my stand partner

to check the call time, and other times, she calls me.

I eat a light snack, usually a banana.

If you could play any other instrument in the

orchestra, what would it be and why?

I would play the harp. It is such a magical

instrument.

What orchestral work have you never performed

live, but have always wanted to?

I would like to play Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana or

Verdi’s Aida.

When you’re not practicing, what do you do in

your spare time?

I teach music at my studio, give online lectures, knit

shawls, swim, and take my dogs and cat on walks.

.

LINDA CALVERT, VIOLIN

How long have you played your instrument?

I started playing the violin in 5th grade and

joined the LSO in 12th grade. This is my 49th

year with the LSO.

If you could play any other instrument in the

orchestra, what would it be and why?

When I was very young, I wanted to play

percussion (like my big brother) or flute.

My mother wanted me to play violin for 2

reasons: 1) they will need more violinists than

percussionists or flutes, and 2) she insisted

it be a small instrument because she was

tired of helping load and unload my brother’s

drums.

When you’re not practicing, what do you do

in your spare time?

My background includes human resources,

real estate, and property management. I

spend a great amount of time restoring and

landscaping my 1940 home.

CHUNYANG WANG, BASS

How long have you played your instrument?

22 years. Fun fact, I’m the third generation to play

the bass in my family.

When you’re not practicing, what do you do in

your spare time?

I enjoy cooking a lot, and spending time with my

wife, Anne, and daughter, Zoe.

What advice do you have for someone who

wants to learn your instrument?

Have a big car and be OK with random people

asking you if you had wished to play the piccolo!

What is your favorite popular artist, band, or

genre?

I love going back to my favorite bands from high

school—Green Day and Linkin Park—and I also

really enjoy artists like Imogen Heap and Halsey.

Tell us about your favorite memory from working

with LSO.

I would have to say last year’s Russian Dances. I

love Shostakovich, so getting to play the Chamber

Symphony for the first time WITH added dancers

was awesome!
