The most people know of Egypt is that it is the home of the great pyramids and the Sphinx. For the uninitiated, Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, and is known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC (hence the name), the location promises to provide a fantastic historical backdrop for the events, which take place in October 2010. Whilst that seems a long time away, for the North Curl Curl team planning on being part of Rescue 2010, it means that the time for fund raising is here. The Board & Ski team are undertaking a number of activities to raise the required funds to make the trip, and kicked things off by hosting a BBQ at our 2 club registration days. There certainly shouldn’t be any shortage of sand for the beach events, but will the Mediterranean Annual Golf Day Returning to Mona Vale This year we return to Mona Vale Golf Course for the North Curl Curl SLSC Annual Golf Day, to be held on December 28th. Breakfast will be served at 7:00am, with a shot gun start at 8:00am. Following golf, lunch will be available back at the Surf Club. Fees are $120 for seniors, and $70 for Under 18 players. Hole sponsorship is available for $400 (which includes the round fees for you). All proceeds will go towards purchasing and maintaining much needed surf life saving equipment. If you have any prizes that you would like to donate for the day, please let us know provide any challenge for the water competitors ? Well believe it or not, Egypt is supposedly the location for some of the best waves on the Mediterranean Coast, just ask the Egyptian Surfing Federation—yes, they have a surfing community! The Egyptian Board Riding Committee website (www.egypt-board-riding.com) shows a number of beach breaks dot the coastline near the host city, including The Library (St. Anthony’s) which can produce one of the largest waves in Egypt. But research so far has failed to spot anything more than a Scarborough like bump for competitors—but they do have some great kite surfing and you guessed it, great sand boarding! And as for hazards, apparently you have to look out for rebar and other construction materials in the water in the cities—and in the Frontier Zones, watch out for the Coast Guard—not sure what that means Map of the Beach Breaks in Alexandria Egypt For more details, contact Rob Watson (99054680) or Chris Stoneman (0416 261142 ). Page 5 Nippers Ready For a Record Season Well the footy boots have been put away and the netball hoops have been taken down, so it must be time for the new Nippers season to kick off. This year we limited registrations to just the 2 registration days in September, which at first was thought might impact our numbers for the 2009/2010 season. Well at last count, we had just under 550 registered Junior Activities members, and there are still some registrations to be processed. So we look like having the biggest numbers on record this year. With so many little competitors to look after, Geoff Pickering and his support crew are working on plenty of plans to make sure all our youngsters have fun during the summer, whilst also catering for the up and comers that are keen competitors. Tony Williams has enlisted the help of Rob Lovely, Martin Gall and Matt Heaton to put together a comprehensive and specialized training program, which covers boards, surf swimming and Iron person for the Nippers that are keen to compete in carnivals. No doubt they will need plenty of help from parents to ensure there is sufficient water safety during the training sessions, others training session will no go ahead. For those youngsters just getting into the swing of competing, there will be training incorporated with normal Sunday events, ensuring that we cater for all levels, and ensuring we continue to go from strength to strength in our junior ranks. The team is also enlisting some of the senior club members to help provide some learning activities for the Nippers at Sunday events, covering surf skills and awareness, and other practical activities. For the Nippers, it’s a chance to learn from our experienced older members, as well as providing an opportunity to bridge the gap between the junior ranks and our senior club in a very tangible way. As far as running the Junior Activities goes, Geoff is still looking for some volunteers to join the JAC team for 2009/2010. The following positions are still open—Treasurer, Secretary, Education Officer, Education Co-Ordinator, Surf Board Riding Co- Ordinator, Social Committee.
