What makes a Learner? As a school our mission is to help
students become confident, connected, actively involved citizens
and lifelong learners. So what characteristics will help them get
there in today‟s ever changing world? It is no longer enough to
just know facts and figures. Students also have to know how to
process information, relate to other people and make informed
choices and decisions.
SCHOOL INFORMATION
As part of our school‟s continuing development we are currently
reviewing our expectations of students as learners. We would love
to have your ideas and views on this. It would be great if you
could jot down the characteristics that you consider important for a
21 st century learner and email them along with any other
comments on the subject to learning@waimeaint.school.nz
Winter Tournament On Thursday and Friday last week Waimea Intermediate participated in the Top of the South Winter Sports Tournament.
We had a number of teams participating in all the major sports including hockey, soccer, rugby, netball, table tennis, volleyball, badminton and
basketball. The results, (even though not quite as good as last year) far succeeded all other schools with WIS taking out 6 of the 16 trophies up
for grabs. (Please have a look at the photo gallery on the moodle page on our school website.) A special thanks to all the coaches that gave
up their time to help these teams achieve to their potential and also a big thanks to all the umpires, referees and officials who made the
tournament as successful as it was. In particular a huge „thank you‟ to the families that billeted students from Bohally Intermediate. Without
your support this tournament would not be possible.
ECO FEST Last weekend Waimea Intermediate entered a number of cars in the Nelson Ecofest, both in the CO2 competition as well as
alternative powered toys. We had 3 wins out of 4 in the alternative power and a highly commended. In the CO2 category we had a win with an
average speed of around 90km/hour. This is what the judges had to say:
CO2/Speed: Winner Tyrone Kuipers with speeds of .766 and .78 seconds on the two days. The judges (and audience) were blown
away by the speed and sleekness of the CO2 racers
Alternative-Powered Toy Car Races/Innovation: Winner “1970” Luke Eggers, Devon Stove, Jared Edens and Christopher Dippie,
judges liked the fact that the car had the solar panel mounted on the car and so did not need a battery to run
Alternative-Powered Toy Car Races/Best Use of Recycled Materials: Winner “The Crusher” Tate Holland, Thomas Stobie, Adam
Hahn, Nick Ward and Haydon McKenzie. This car was a fast runner, good looking, and well-made with flair!
Honourable Mention: „The Cheese Machine‟ made by Julia Edwards, Jamie Couper, Asleigh Burke and Maria Wilkie, a well-made
and impressive car
The judges were so impressed with the thought, design and expertise that went into the making of these cars. Thank you to Bowater Toyota for
sponsorship and helping with the judging, they will present Waimea with a $100 for each category won.
Congratulations to Tahlia Matthews who won the Junior Section of the Funky Fashion Show at Ecofest Fashion. Well done!
The RISE awards reflect our school values of Respect, Integrity,
Self Management and Empathy Congratulations to the following
SPCA CUPCAKE DAY 2012 The 27 th of August is SPCA
CUPCAKE DAY! Cupcake day is a special day when we sell
cupcakes to raise money for our local SPCA. Some of the school
waste busters and class councillors will be organising this and will
be selling cupcakes on Monday the 27 th . Each class councillor will
have pre-order forms for you to fill out with your money, name and
room number. If you want to help out we would appreciate if you
could bring various ingredients like caster sugar, flour, cupcake
cases, icing sugar etc. All money raised will go to medical
research, food and cute little toys for the animals to play with!
Please help support the SPCA.
Nelsomathix Competition 2012 Congratulations to Waimea‟s
four teams who competed so successfully in last week‟s
Nelsomathix competition held at Motueka High School. The Year 7
winning team - Lucy King, Jamie Simonsen, Jessica Stock and
Caleb Thompson completed the competition soon after the half
way mark for a very impressive victory. Shakia Biggs, Bradley
Davis, Britney Kerr and Maggie McLean also from Year 7 pushed
hard and were consistently in the top three positions before being
passed on the line for a highly credible fourth. Waimea‟s Year 8
teams also performed exceptionally well. The winning team -
Simon Anderson, Chris Gray, Sam McKenzie and Jordy Suckling
made short work of the paper and enjoyed the opportunity to think
dynamically. Josh Canton, Greer Hill, Riley O‟Sullivan-Moffat and
Jemma Stephenson were always looking strong but narrowly
missed the final three positions, finishing an impressive fifth.
It’s a bit like softball for beginners. You can hit off a tee if you like, and
make up your own teams. This competition is all about having a go and
having some fun. There will be lunchtime coaching available for teams.
Talk to Mr Tyer.
This is organised through Mr Tyer but players are also welcome to contact
the Royals Softball Club to get into a team.
All players are welcome to contact the Royals Softball Club to get into a
team. This is not organised through school.
Mr Tyer organises this and it is all school based and about introducing
hockey to NEW players. You can organise your own team, but no more
than 2 rep players in a team. No skill required and the rules are simple!
Whether swimming inside or out, it’s a great way to keep fit, healthy and
look good for the beach. Maybe a future as a life guard? Talk to Sally
about finding a club for you.
Sally will call for players for cricket. A great way to spend a Saturday
morning. Coaches and managers are also required.
Mr Linyard will be calling for interested players. Go and have a talk to him
today. As we are the only intermediate that has girl’s cricket teams we
play in the primary school boy’s league.
Speak to Ms Weir about this sport. She will be happy to put you in a team,
what’s more it is all inside so you won’t get wet!
Ring Saxton Stadium and speak to Tony to organise entry into this new
competition.
Richmond Athletics is held at Saxton Athletics Oval.
