Allison FarrishOnline FYIC ExperienceIn November, I had the opportunity to attend FYIC, the“First Year Integration Conference”. Many engineering studentsfrom different Ontario universities connected over Zoom to learnabout leadership development and mental health. I am glad that Ichose to apply for this conference, as I was able to take away alot of valuable information. I attended various online presentationswith interesting topics and very knowledgeable speakers.One highlight from the conference for me was a presentation titled“Breaking down Imposter syndrome and unlocking your authenticself”. The speaker was very enthusiastic and uplifting,and it made me realize that I shouldn’t doubt my skills or discountmy achievements. In addition, another presentation that Ifound very helpful was called “Fake it ‘til you make it”. Bothindividuals were introverts, and they explained how they managedbeing involved within their school despite being more reserved.Throughout the conference, I also got the chance to learnmore about engineering. I attended presentations about differentengineering communities and societies in Ontario, and I learnedthe steps required in order to be a Professional Engineer. Overall,I think the students who organized FYIC did a great job ofcreating an engaging online conference despite the current challengingcircumstances. The conference was filled with greatspeakers and presentations, as well as many fun activities. Igained valuable insight regarding mental health and leadership inengineering, and I also learned a lot about myself.Brayden ChartrandLEC and OEC 2021Engineering competitions: They have been around herelonger than I have (probably). This year I along with my teammateRebecca A. had the opportunity to compete in the LU EngineeringCompetition (LEC) and qualified for the Ontario EngineeringCompetition (OEC). Both competitions are separated intoseveral categories based on what you are interested in doing,such as debating, Jr. and Sr. Design and our event of choicereengineering. As the name would suggest our task was to repurposeor redesign a product or system to be more effective or economical.Both competitions began with a similar experience, wewere given a case topic a week before the competition where wewould have to come up with a solution and a presentation arguingthe feasibility and effectiveness of our ideas. OEC howevergave an additional case the first day of the competition then gavea submission deadline to see how we would preform under atime restriction.Overall, both competitions are great experiences. There arespeakers and career fairs throughout the day as well as socialevents in the evening. Even though you are in competition everyoneis very friendly about it. I was able to meet other peoplefrom universities across the province as well as participate inevents such as a scavenger hunt (with a cash prize) and gamenights. This also forced me to improve my presentation skillswhich will help me down the line as it seems this profession islittered with presentations.Would I recommend LEC? No, because I don’t want tohave to compete with more people. Would I actually recommendLEC? Yes, of course! It is a fun competition where you get anopportunity to meet a variety of different people and get to heara bunch of unique solutions to the same problem.5
