FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Riverside Primary School
Over the next few weeks we have many opportunities for
parents to be either involved with their children at school or to
attend information sessions to support your understanding of
the Australian Curriculum. This year we will be assessing your
children in Maths, English and Science using the national
curriculum. These sessions are an excellent opportunity for you
to be well informed before our first reporting cycle in July.
Another congratulations to parents – well done on the healthy
options you send along for fruit break. This ranges from an
apple, cut up carrot strips, dried fruit to a small plastic container
of fresh fruit salad. I wish I had thought of your good ideas
when my children took along their snacks.
So over the past week
Grade 3/4 sport started with classes involved in a range
of fun activities
Grade 5/6 class leaders were involved in the Prep to
Grade 2 Friday sport options. Well done to the older
students for their excellent organisation
 Grade 5/6 summer sport began
Grade 4KS and 4GW tested out how they could
prevent eggs breaking, when they are dropped from a
height, as part of a Science investigation
Many classes worked together as buddies. This involves
older and younger classes involved in collaborative
activities. This is a highly valued aspect of the school
which encourages positive relationships, getting to
know different people in the school and building a
school team
Prep teachers started the assessment of each child on
PIPS. This provides information in literacy and
numeracy to support further teaching. Children are
retested in October. Every Prep student completes this
test in Tasmania
Our Kinder students are using the Kinder space well at
recess and lunchtime. It is wonderful to see children
making connections with students from the other
classes
Science Talent Search
Validation Forms
Validation forms are being sent home with students today. If
you haven’t received your child’s copy yet, please ask them or
check in their school bags for a white envelope.
Please complete and return to your child’s class teacher by
Friday March 16. It is vital for school records to be
accurate to enable us to contact you in an emergency.
Please look carefully at the consent to publications section.
Most parents tick yes to all these sections, unless there are
some personal family circumstances. It is your choice but
when we check often people have misread or misunderstood.
If you have any queries or want more clarification please
contact the school office.

On Friday March 2 nd Anton, Ireland-Skye and Chappy went to St
David’s for The World Day of Prayer. The service was fantastic
and was about supporting Malaysia to be a fairer place. “I liked
the songs that we sang” (Ireland-Skye) and “I liked meeting new
people and it was fun to do the Offering” (Anton). The Offering
was to raise money to help make Malaysia a more Just (fairer)
place. “In Australia we don’t have to work for peace and we can
do after school sports, but in Malaysia some people can’t afford
to go to school” (Anton).
We learnt that Selamat Dartung means Peace and Welcome in
the Malaysian language.
At the end there was a morning tea provided by St David’s with
great butterfly cupcakes.
Swimming Carnival
Pleasant conditions on both days of our carnivals made for an
enjoyable competition between houses. There were many
outstanding performances during the day, with participation
rates once again very high. Griffiths came out in front after the
Grade 3/4 carnival but the overall picture was slightly different
with Thompson winning on 1214 from Griffiths on 1024,
Freeland 1020 and Barnes 1008. This continues Thompson’s
success of carnivals winning their fourth swimming carnival in six
years.
Congratulations to all competitors on a great day. A special
mention to all the teachers who made the day very enjoyable for
all concerned. This was also helped by the RHS prefects and our
new house captains who took on their roles with enthusiasm
and vigour.
From this carnival we have chosen a Grade 5/6 team to
participate in the inter-school swimming champions at Riverside
This will be an opportunity for families of Kinder children to
come and spend some time with their child in the classrooms
and meet other families from the Kinder community.
Sausages will be available for purchase on the night and all funds
raised will go towards a much needed upgrade of our Kinder
playground.
A notice will be sent home with your child shortly.
We hope to see you all there!
Grade 5/6 Library Arrangement for 2012
The modern library system has developed to allow users to
access information from a much wider range of sources: books,
magazines, print and the internet.
In line with this evolution we are trialling an alternative library
structure for our grade 5 and 6 students. For three weeks
students will have a 30 minute block of time where they work
with our teacher-librarian, Mrs Lippis, on a range of literacy
based concepts to assist them in their understanding of the
library and literature.
For the following three week rotation they will have an extended
opportunity of 90 minutes to work with both their classroom
teacher and Mrs Lippis to explore learning around ICT
(Information and Communication Technology) on a range of
levels. This will be supported through the use of our i-Room
and the computers within the library. Some learning may have
an individual focus, at times children may be working
collaboratively on group tasks and at other times there may be
whole class instruction.
We believe that children will actually receive greater access to
both the resources in the library and to ICT. Borrowing of
books to support the student’s choice in reading is also more
flexible with a number of times offered through the week where
students can take out and return their fiction and non-fiction
books.
We will review this program at the end of term one but our
initial feedback has been positive from both students and staff.
As with all the learning your child participates in, please chat
with them and get their perspective.
If you have any question please do not hesitate to call and talk
about this initiative.
