Gum disease and links to other serious medical conditions

Coronavirus patients with severe gum disease are almost nine times

more likely to die, warns a new study highlighted by Drayton Dental

Care hygienist, Bala Choudhary.

The study also found that Covid-19 patients with periodontitis were

3.5 times more likely to be admitted to intensive care and 4.5 times

more likely to need a ventilator compared to those without gum

disease.

Keeping your gums strong and healthy

While these statistics are alarming, we would like to reassure you

that severe gum disease does not happen overnight. There are lots of

ways you can keep your gums healthy, such as brushing your teeth

twice a day for two minutes concentrating on your gum line, using

inter-dental brushes or floss to clean the areas between your teeth,

and visiting a dentist and dental hygienist regularly.

Concerned about the health of your gums?

If you have any concerns about the health of your gums, contact us

to book a dental hygiene appointment to set your mind at rest. Gum

disease is common but can be prevented, controlled and treated with

expert help from our meticulous hygiene team.

“Hospital staff should identify Covid-19 patients with

periodontitis”

Information was collected on gum disease and other factors that

might be associated with the Covid-19 complications, including

body mass index (BMI), smoking, asthma, heart disease, diabetes,

and high blood pressure. The paper was published in the Journal of

Clinical Periodontology.

Mariano Sanz of the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, one

of the study’s authors, noted that oral bacteria in patients with

periodontitis can be inhaled and infect the lungs, particularly in

those using a ventilator.

“This may contribute to the deterioration of patients with Covid-19

and raise the risk of death,” he said. “Hospital staff should identify

Covid-19 patients with periodontitis and use oral antiseptics to

reduce transmission of bacteria.”

Around half the world's population over 30 suffer from

periodontitis, which causes swelling in and around the gums. If not

treated properly, the inflammation can spread throughout the body

and infect the lungs.

The tell-tale signs of gum disease include gums that feel swollen

or tender, that bleed, and bad breath. If in doubt, please see your

dentist or hygienist at your earliest convenience.

Look out of your window at your lawn and you’ll probably see that it has suddenly

taken off and is growing rapidly. This means that now is the perfect time to get to

grips with a bit of spring maintenance. True, your lawn will survive without it, but

if you want it to look a good deal better than average, then get your skates on!

In most areas temperatures should have evened up a little and the soil in beds,

borders and under your lawn should hopefully not be wet and soggy.

Grass needs regular mowing from now on; in

some areas this may mean once a week, so

make sure that the mower blades are good and

sharp. On so-called utility lawns you will need to

cut to about 2.5cm or 1”, while on higher grade

smart lawns cut to about 1-1.5cm.

Lawns benefit from a specially formulated

spring feed at this time of year to encourage

good strong growth and strengthen the

grasses up after any winter setbacks. If you

use a granular formulation, make sure that you

water it in well if you cannot time the job so

that the rain does this for you!

Give yourself a bit of a workout too and scarify

the lawn. This means using a spring-tined rake

to pull out any accumulated debris or thatch from

the base of the grasses. This allows for a better

flow of moisture and air, thus ensuring that the

grass grows stronger and more healthily.

If your lawn has developed a lot of moss

(especially likely if it has suffered compaction, is

shaded or has been particularly wet), then apply

a proprietary moss killer before scarifying. Use a

combined feed and moss killer to save yourself

Please mention the NR8 Directory when responding to ads - thanks! 21

time if you like, but whichever product you

choose, make sure that you leave the specified

time between applying the treatment and raking

the dead moss out. If you don’t, the moss

problem could become a lot worse, as you’ll

spread the pieces of living moss as you rake.

Worm casts may be there in abundance now too,

so if necessary simply use a besom or brush to

brush them away or distribute them over the lawn.

Humps and bumps in the lawn or indeed any

other sort of uneven surface can be dealt

with now, but you will need to get this done

promptly, just in case the weather gets hot

and dry soon. A minor problem can be dealt

with using a sandy top-dressing mixture, but if

there are some prominent problems then use

a sharp spade to cut an ‘H’ shape over the

bump or hollow. Now carefully peel back the

turf and then remove or add soil as necessary

before replacing the turf flaps, firming well and

providing a good drink.

It is also worth sorting out any stepping

stones that have sunk too low or become

uneven. Use a spade to ease them out of the

lawn and lift and readjust the level beneath

before replacing them.

It may sound as if there’s a lot to do, but

remember that every hour spent now will make

a huge difference to how the lawn looks for the

rest of the year!

At www.pippagreenwood.com you’ll find stylish cloches,

practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic

SpeedHoe, gardening tools, signed books and the ‘Grow

Your Own with Pippa’ system.

Recharge and Revive in a Bathroom

that Makes you Feel Great.

Functionality comes first in the bathroom, but there’s

no reason why you can’t combine efficiency with

aesthetics – and gain all the benefits of a space that

looks good and feels good at the same time. Here are

a dozen ideas to start you off:

• Lighting is vital. Check that the bulbs in your light

fittings are giving off the light you prefer, though

try not to mix different light temperatures (warm

or cool) in the same room. Smart bulbs can be

switched on and off and the colour temperature

changed or dimmed using a remote control or

an app. Or, if you have a light switch outside the

bathroom door, consider swapping it for a dimmer.

Wooden blinds are elegant and practical, and come in

a range of natural colours, or brighter, painted shades.

Luxury Clay Brown wooden Venetian blinds with tapes,

price depends on size, English Blinds.

Incredibly glamorous, these pink wall tiles have a glossy,

crackle-glazed finish, and fit right into this luxurious bathroom,

which features huge amounts of built-in storage. Bella Pink

wall tiles, £35.99 per square metre, Tile Mountain.

• Sort out your storage. Slim wall cupboards,

shelves, ladders, caddies, peg rails and

over-door hooks are options, while small

storage items – such as wicker baskets, pretty

ceramics or bright plastic tubs – bring texture,

colour and interest.

• If your shower is pathetic, investigate whether

you can add a pump to make it more powerful.

• Get rid of the grunge and scrape out the old

grout and silicone between and around your

tiles, especially if there’s any mould. Redoing

them will make an extraordinary difference.

• Replace a shower curtain with a shiny glass

shower screen – the look is clean and minimally

efficient (and won’t need replacing regularly).

• Jazz up your windows. Options include

decorative window film, a beautiful blind (Roman

or roller) or some minimal wooden louvres.

• Add a large mirror – it’s not only useful and

a focal point but increases the feeling of light

and space in the room.

Please menon the NR8 Directory when responding to ads - thanks! 25

• Buy a set of coordinating towels.

The fluffier the better, in clean,

bright, hotel-white or a colourful

pattern.

• Add plants, large and small, high

and low – they usually thrive in a

bathroom’s humid atmosphere.

Choose pots that complement your

overall scheme.

• Lay a woven cotton or ‘outdoor’

rug on the floor – it can easily be

washed or wiped down and will

introduce a softer feel, adding

colour, pattern and texture, too.

• Change a dated pair of taps for

some good-looking, modern ones.

Check that they will suit your water

pressure, and make sure the new

spout extends the correct amount

over the bath or basin – they should

reach about as far as the plug hole.

• A chair or stool is always useful in

a bathroom, even if it’s just to throw

clothes over or to hold soap and

books next to the bath.

This hybrid bath is designed with the smaller room in mind, allowing

luxury, comfort and choice to fit into even a modest space. Mini Ebb

shower bath, £1,495, Waters Baths of Ashbourne.

By Kate Duggan

Books to uplift, inspire and help you to move forwards.

The Shift – Sam Baker

Whether you’re just approaching the perimenopause or have reached

the other side, Shift is a must read. It covers everything from common

symptoms to the media’s treatment of ‘invisible women’. You won’t find

a list of all the different types of HRT or discover a magic cure-all for

hot flushes. Instead, as the subtitle says, it’s the story of how Baker lost

(and found) herself after 40 – and how you can too. I loved the author’s

wry humour and admission that she doesn’t have all the answers.

Interspersed with her writing are quotes from hundreds of women,

revealing differing views to the menopause, ageing and life in general.

Where Hope Comes From – Nikita Gill

Nikita Gill’s poems take the reader on a journey through the stages of grief,

onwards to hope. Gill is at high risk from Covid-19 and lives thousands of miles

away from her family. Her poems helped her to find a way forward. As she

explained on Instagram, “When I realised that I needed to honour my grief and

anger, I finally began to work my way through them.” The result is a truly beautiful

collection of short poems to help the reader “… come away with a little more joy

and hope than before.”

One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot – Marianne Cronin

A book about two terminally ill friends may not seem like the most uplifting of reads,

yet somehow One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot manages to be just that.

seventeen-year-old Lenni and eighty-three-year-old Margot meet in hospital. They

set themselves a challenge of painting a hundred pictures, one for every year of

their lives. As they grow closer, they reveal the stories behind the paintings. While

the original focus in on Lenni, it’s Margot’s life, with all its ups, downs and loves

lost, that ends up taking centre stage.

Do Pause – Robert Poynton

Poynton discusses how pausing (whether to reconsider, question yourself,

appreciate your surroundings or just rest) can help us to take back control, become

more creative and, ultimately, be happier. If you’re struggling to find a balance in

life, or find your brain is always ‘on’, this little book could be the coffee break read

you’re looking for.

The Atlas of Happiness – Helen Russell

Helen Russell explores traditions, practices and beliefs from around the world,

from the Italian ‘dolce far niente’ (the joy of doing nothing) to Japan’s ‘wabi-sabi’

(appreciating things as they are, with all their imperfections). She also offers advice

for embracing some of these practices in everyday life. An enjoyable read to dip in

an out of, The Atlas of Happiness might just help you to see life a little differently.

Other books to try…

I’ve covered these before, but in case you missed them, I highly recommend:

• Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library

• Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse

• Brandon Stanton’s Humans

• Research your perfect picnic spot carefully. How

far is it from the car park and is there a charge

for parking? Are there toilets? Can you bring your

dog? Is there somewhere to shelter if it’s too hot

or there’s a sudden shower.

• Pack everything you need for the day: water,

sunscreen, a lightweight waterproof (just in case),

warmer layers and the all-important face mask

and hand-santiser. A plastic bag for your rubbish

will be handy too.

• Decorate your picnic area with battery-powered

fairy lights, lanterns and some bunting. Get comfy

with camping chairs or deck chairs, using your

picnic basket as a handy side table. Music adds

atmosphere so take a Bluetooth speaker.

• Bring along games that all the family can play.

Rounders and croquet are great, or organise a

treasure hunt, play hide and seek, or set up an

old-school egg-and-spoon or sack race.

If you’re craving sandy beaches and coastal

scenery, but aren’t expecting to travel abroad

this summer, the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire

could be the staycation for you.

Nestled into the tip of Wales’ most westerly

point, Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff faces,

horseshoe bays and sandy beaches could fool

you into thinking you travelled abroad after all.

With its Celtic sites and offshore islands, not to

mention Britain’s smallest (and probably most

charming) city, Pembrokeshire has something for

everyone. Here are five activities you shouldn’t miss...

Spend a day in St Davids

The tiny city of St Davids is really no bigger

than a village, but is full to the brim with history,

religious significance and Welsh charm.

Its star attraction is the twelfth century cathedral,

which is also the birthplace and burial site

of Wales’ patron saint. A pilgrimage site for

centuries, it still draws in thousands of visitors

each year.

After a tour of the cathedral, visit the medieval

ruins of Bishop’s Palace and enjoy a coffee in

one of the city’s cosy little eateries!

Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

The 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one

of the most spectacular long-distance trails in

Britain – and a national park in its own right.

Serious hikers take on the whole trail over two or

three weeks, but you only have to walk a small

section to get a taste of the coastline’s epic scenery.

Drink in Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff tops and

stunning ocean views, and stop for a rest on one

of the trail’s wide, sandy beaches.

Hop from beach to beach

Pembrokeshire’s beaches are arguably the best

in the UK. And with 50 to choose from, you’re

spoilt for choice.

Barafundle Bay is a

must-visit – a pocket of

semi-tropical paradise on

Pembrokeshire’s south

coast – while the seaside

town of Tenby is also a

fantastic place to stay.

Then there are the water

sports. Practice water

skiing, sailing, surfing,

kitesurfing and kayaking,

or if you’re really seeking a thrill, try coasteering.

Born on these very shores, this combination

of adventure swimming, rock climbing and

cliff jumping brings you face to face with

Pembrokeshire’s rugged natural beauty.

Visit a Celtic village

If you’ve ever wondered how things might

have looked 2,000 years ago, the treasured

historical site of Castell Henllys paints a pretty

accurate picture.

After evidence of numerous Iron Age

roundhouses was excavated here, the Celtic

village has now been reconstructed for visitors.

Take a tour of the roundhouses and old granary,

and stroll through the site’s beautiful woodland,

learning about Celtic life, myths and legends.

Take a boat to Pembrokeshire’s islands

Pembrokeshire’s rocky offshore islands are

known for their rich wildlife, with puffins, grey

seals and thousands of rare birds all calling the

islands home.

Take a boat trip to Skomer and Skockholm

during nesting season to sight millions of

seabirds, including razorbills, puffins, storm

petrels and guillemots. A designated RSPB

reserve, Ramsey Island is another important

breeding site, and is open during the summer for

day trips.

An introduction to e-bikes

E-bikes are like normal bikes given super

powers: you still pedal them, but they have an

electric motor that gives you some extra help.

It feels rather like having bionic legs: you can

pull away from traffic lights quickly and easily

tackle steep hills.

That makes them brilliant for commuting and

urban cycling, and a great choice for people who

want to improve their fitness and haven’t been

on a bike for years.

What kind of e-bikes are there?

Commuter bikes are all-rounders while MTBs

are mountain bikes and road bikes are racing

bikes. The former have big tyres and great

suspension, while the latter use super-light

materials and aggressive geometry to achieve

high speeds. Cargo bikes are for carrying loads

that are too big for panniers or a backpack, and

usually have bigger tyres and better brakes.

How do I get the right e-bike size?

E-bike sizes are usually expressed as S, M, L

and XL. Small bikes are generally suitable for

riders up to 5’5” while XL bikes are designed for

six footers and above. Some e-bikes have very

adjustable seats and handlebars that enable

them to skip between sizes.

Is there more than one kind of e-bike motor?

Crank drives connect directly to the bike chain,

while hub drives sit in the wheel hub – usually

the rear wheel. Crank drives are more energy

efficient and feel more natural when pedalling

but hub drives are usually much cheaper.

What about gears?

E-bikes come with the same kind of gear

systems as ordinary bikes and the gears adjust

how much pedalling is needed – in higher gears

you pedal less because you’re going faster.

Cyrusher XF690 folding fat bike,

£1,799 from Cyrusher.co.uk

With e-bikes you’ll usually be able to control the

assistance level the motor gives you. You might

choose Turbo for fast pulling away from traffic

lights but Eco (or equivalent) when on a relaxing

country ride.

How do I know what battery to choose?

Most manufacturers provide a battery range

estimate, or you can calculate the range by

dividing the battery’s power by 20 – a battery

with a 400Wh rating should give about 20 miles

on full assist, which is when the electric motor is

operating at full power. Most e-bikes have a little

bike computer that shows battery charge and the

range remaining before recharging is needed.

When the battery runs out of power, your e-bike

behaves like a normal bike, albeit a heavier one.

Typical recharge time is three to four hours and

batteries typically last for two to four years.

How much should I spend?

You can get perfectly decent e-bikes for around

£500, or you can spend over £4,000 on a carbon

road bike. The more you spend the lighter the

bikes become and the better the hardware:

where cheaper e-bikes are designed for

everyday use, the most expensive e-bikes are

serious bits of sporting equipment with matching

price tags. Whatever you buy, make sure you

also acquire a very good U-lock: sadly, all

e-bikes are targets for bike thieves.

SPRINGTIME

DECLUTTER

Spring Cleaning has been a ritual for many centuries and as this time of year approaches,

Being Me Again is here to help you to do more than just a Springtime Declutter.

The practice of deep cleaning the home after a long

winter has happened around spring and Easter for

many years. Flinging open the windows as the warmer

weather arrives, blowing out the cobwebs, and

freshening up the home is maybe an idea especially

worthwhile this spring, when we have all been

confined to our homes throughout a winter lockdown.

This year, however, take it a step further with a

complete declutter of the home, your mind and life

too. Declutter all that no longer serves you, is no

longer useful or works and no longer brings you joy.

Clutter is usually associated with objects or things, but

can also be emotions thoughts, tasks or even people.

If it does not add value to your life - it is clutter!!!

Decluttering allows us to reduce the pressure and

overwhelm we feel upon us. A lack of space can

create and contribute to our stresses. We all have that

one untidy room, bulging cupboard or drawer that

does not make us feel great. Decluttering can be

priceless as benefits include,

More time to enjoy life, as we are not looking for

things and tidying up,

More money for the things you enjoy, as we

appreciate what we do have or sell the items we do

not need,

Improves your mood, wellbeing and general

health, as negative emotions are released bringing

calmness,

Boosts productivity and creativity,

Relieves stress.

As a Professional Declutterer, trained with APDO,

(Association of Professional Declutterers and

Organisers), I have a passion for decluttering. For me

decluttering brings joy, just like it does Marie Kondo.

Using various decluttering method including

SpaceClearing, KonMari, and Four Box methods I can

offer practical, sympathetic help to declutter. Further

training in counselling and a massive interest in

mindset and habit forming has taught me the value of

listening to help you find you again under all the

clutter that has built up over time. People often pay

for someone to clean for them, now people are

needing help to declutter their lives. It can be a

daunting task, especially when you already feel

overwhelmed. A Professional Declutterer can help

you make a start on that cupboard, room, or area of

your life. Maybe you need to downsize due to a move,

need to find some light and happiness again after a

change in circumstances, or simply a tidy up after

being stuck at home for a year. Working together we

will look at what you want to declutter and organise,

to make it work more effectively, bringing you joy,

happiness and a spring in your step.

A springtime declutter of

the home, the mind and life

this season, will help you

find you again, making a

happier version of you to

get out there and enjoy life

again, making the most of

the freedom we have after

a year of lockdowns.

Intimate Female Rejuvenation.

Intimate Female Rejuvenation. This does

not have to be a taboo subject and you do

not have to suffer in silence. Now we have

several effective options for vulvo-vaginal

rejuvenation to improve your intimate and

sexual health. It is ok to talk about intimate

and sexual health.

Contrary to popular belief, intimate health

does not only concern ladies after menopause.

If you look at the history of human

evolution- our life span has increased steadily.

Pregnancy and childbirth were hazardous

events and life expectancy was low. We are

all living longer and many women spend

more than 50% of their lives with intimate

health and menopausal issues such as stress

urinary incontinence, urinary infections,

vaginal dryness, irritation, discomfort or even

pain. Modern lifestyle, diet, alcohol, environmental

pollution etc. affect our general and

hormonal health also.

There has been enormous progress in

regenerative medical treatments and these

are commonplace for facial and body rejuvenation.

Did you know several of these treatments

can be applied to intimate areas also?

These treatments have become very popular

during recent years and we have several

studies and satisfied patients that attest to a

success story. Several women choose laser

therapy after childbirth to rejuvenate tissues

in their intimate areas.

So how do we start?

You have a doctor consultation and examination

takes place. A chaperone is available for

your comfort. A medical history and evaluation

takes place. This is followed by a treatment

plan, which may include one or more

of the available options.

We have several options available and a

treatment plan will be formulated in

consultation with you and your wishes. Your

treatment will not be performed the same

day but on a subsequent appointment at a

later date. This may include one or more of

the following options. We may recommend

a referral to other specialists where a multidisciplinary

approach is desirable. This is not

essential however and you can choose one

or more than one option to be carried out in

a discreet, professional, comfortable and

private way.

1] Bio-identical hormone therapy may be

recommended or it may be a conventional

HRT or oestrogen creams prescribed by your

GP. Blood tests may be required.

2] Laser treatment. We have several lasers

available. Choice of laser is based on your

specific concern. This may be lasers to

address pigmentation or vascular concerns.

You can be more prone to pigmentation in

intimate areas due to genetic predisposition,

ageing, your ethnicity, use of hormones such

as contraceptive pills or HRT. Lifestyle issues

such as tight clothing, irritation from

epilation, chafing or folliculitis causes

inflammation and post-inflammatory

hyperpigmentation.

Please mention the NR8 Directory when responding to ads - thanks! 37

3] Mona-lisa touch Laser treatment.

This is a fractional CO2 laser treatment

and only takes a few minutes

to perform. It is a true rejuvenation

by creating new tissue in your

intimate areas.

4] Dermal filler- Desirial. A hyaluronic

acid based gel specifically

formulated to preserve women’s

intimate health, to restore hydration,

elasticity, and sensitivity of the

vulvo-vaginal area. Desirial Plus is

a special dermal filler designed for

labia majora remodelling.

5] Stem cell enriched nano fat transfer

with PRP. A very minor liposuction

is carried out to obtain fat cells

rich in growth factors. These are then

combined with PRP and injected for

rejuvenation of tissues.

6] PRP. Here we take a blood sample,

centrifuge it at very high speeds

of up to 3500 rpm to concentrate

platelets and growth factors. This

concentrated solution can be

injected or applied to the areas

after mona lisa touch therapy in

a no-needle way.

7] Laser lipolysis and skin tightening

can be carried out to reduce thickened

labia, mons pubis area and liposuction

and mons lift can be performed

under local anaesthesia.

TAVERHAM & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB NEWSLETTER

We trust you are all keeping well and hope that several of you may

have been fortunate enough to have had the vaccine by now.

As you will be aware our Fundraising has been severely impacted over the past 12 months,

for example our Norwich City Football car park have ceased and are not likely to restart until

August 2021 earliest, all our Summer BBQ’s last year were cancelled. We were, however,

fortunate with a revised Christmas Float plan to visit our local Community in December and

with the amazing support collected over £3,000.00.

We have already lost in 2021 the Costessey two day May Bank Holiday Fete, which has

already been cancelled, Taverham Fayre looks like going the same way. It is highly unlikely

that any of the local schools where we have been fortunate in the past to hold our BBQs will

go ahead this summer.

Despite the lockdowns we have still managed to support and help others, including amongst

others Norwich Foodbank, East Anglian Children’s Hospice and the NNUH where we have

provided underwear and slippers for vulnerable patients.

To generate some income for our charity account we have joined forces with Broadland

Council to sell Lottery tickets. 60% of sales

will go to charity, 40% in prizes and our club

will receive 50% sales which go to our charity

account.

However, this is where we would like your

support please, if you are able to we would

appreciate your help if you would buy a

weekly lottery ticket for just £1 per week, or

£4.34 per month based on 52 weeks paid by

Direct Debit. All you have to do is go

www.CommunityAtHeartLottery.com and

search for Taverham Lions and follow the

instructions.

Your support and help would be greatly

appreciated and thank you for your

continued support of Taverham & District

Time in or Timing

Trevor Goodbun

Trevor Goodbun, is the author of Plan A Secure Retirement,

published by Hodder, and a partner at Wensum Financial

Planning

One of the most frequent questions we get asked

is when is a good time to invest, and when is a

good time to cash in an investment.

The falls in value last year brought this into sharp

focus when the FTSE fell by over 30% in a short

period of time. Understandably this led to a

number people worrying about the value of their

pensions and other investments.

So, when is a good time to invest and when is a

good time to cash in? The glib answer to that

question is never and now.

There is an old expression that says time in the

market is more important than timing. What this

is saying is that the length of time you are

invested is more important than trying to time

when to enter and leave the market.

I agree with that but perhaps not necessarily at

face value, but before I address that questions let

me clarify what is meantwhen we say the

market.

The falls that get reported on the news are

usually for major stockmarket indices such as the

FTSE 100. This is the stockmarket value of the

top 100 companies in the UK.

This fall is usually accompanied by a comment of

the financial journalist reporting the story “you

may not think this applies to you but it affects

everyone who has money invested in a pension

or an ISA”

There is some truth to this, but as is so often the

case with a sound bite it’s not the full picture. (I

am not sure if a picture of a soundbite is mixing

my metaphors or not, but it works for me)

Pensions often will have invested in FTSE100

companies as will many other investment (but

not cash) ISAs. However, unless your pension or

ISA is solely invested in the FTSE100, the figures

you are looking at are probably only a small part

of the complete picture.

Certainly whenever we recommend pension or

investment funds we will recommend a wide

range of funds that invest far and wide not just

one particular market.

Most workplace pensions are set up this way as

well. In fact, most workplace pensions will have

an investment mix that will vary according to

when you are due to take the pension. So even if

you are in the same workplace pension as the 18

year old working next to you, you are likely to

have a different mix.

I am of course working on the assumption that

not many 18 year or even 21 year olds are

reading this.

Most of our clients’ pensions did fall in value last

year but not by as much as the FTSE, or the DOW

or most of the other major indices that get

reported.

That not to say a pension can’t fall in value by

30%, it can and perhaps by more, but don’t

confuse a fall in the markets with the value of

your pension.

As usual I have run out of space to cover

everything I want so I will come back to the

question of time in and timing - next time.

Stars for April 2021

Flavour of the Times

Personal and emotional weirdness is very much favoured as the Spring gets under way. The responses we make in

the light of the mental health issues that we have dealt with under lockdown are likely to surprise even ourselves and

they are accelerated now by the fiery Aries energy. So we can expect some very odd things to happen. It may be a

fractious, hurt, angry and maybe even depressed early April until Taurus comes into play, leading to things such

experimental art, love at first sight, stock market volatility – all sorts of things! Paradoxically, usually stable people

may rebel and erratic people may settle down. Hard to tell which: neither or both?!

The above may affect you particularly strongly if your sign is Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio or Taurus. I can only give very

general advice in this column but to really understand what this means for you on a personal level in the next 12

months, there really is no substitute for having a personal astrological consultation that is completely specific to you

and your life.

Chart readings with me begin at £67 and last for an hour on Zoom or Skype.

Please go to: www.astroguidance.co.uk for more details and to book a session.

You can also text or WhatsApp me on 07866 727743 or email me at howpark@aol.com for more information.

Aries

You may find yourself doing some things that are a bit out of

character at this time but you are even more determined than usual

to do things you own way and you will very likely surprise people

around you by really digging in your heels if you feel thwarted. The

brakes seem to be off and there is no stopping you at the moment.

Taurus

The main question now is whether you are in the right mental place

to take advantage of the diversity of possibilities on offer now. You

may be inclined to be a bit rigid and not that flexible so please look

outside your comfort zone at the new moon in mid April before

committing yourself to a course of action that could leave you feeling

disappointed that you did the wrong thing.

Gemini

The renewed social life you are desperate for is not quite there yet

until the end of May but when you get there, you may find you are no

longer attracted by many of the things you enjoyed before. On the

other hand, there are all sorts of new possibilities that may start to

present themselves to you but you have time to experiment now

before the pace speeds up.

Cancer

May is going to be better for you than April this year, especially in

your work-life. The pace is fast and varied this month but this may

not compensate for the feeling that your inner needs are not being

met and may actually be ignored. This may cause you to really

question what you are getting out of your present circumstances but

Mars in your sign now may make you react too hastily and over

emotionally which won’t improve matters at all.

Leo

Saturn may be holding you back but at least it’s stopping you from

making mistakes! Jupiter, on the other hand, is not doing you too

many favours for a good while yet because it means you are

spending too much time on overinflated ideas and exaggerating how

easy they are to achieve. Pride may have to be swallowed in the

face of demands for a reality check!

Virgo

You seem to know what needs to be done, while a lot of other

people’s minds are on other things, so now is the moment to get

started. Projects, particularly those that are imaginative and novel,

can be started now and these can be successful as you go through

April into early May so start preparing the ground early. The real

measurable progress will take place later.

Libra

Single-mindedness is favoured in April so you may struggle because

you don’t like not having many different options to consider. But life

is faster moving now that there may not be time for such detached

considered thinking. You are being forced to choose when you

would rather not but once you have done, and you put one foot in

front of another, you will find that the road looks a bit easier than you

feared.

Scorpio

You may become very aware of toxic and unhealthy relationships in

your life at this time and buried destructive feelings that may have

been suppressed for a long time may bubble up to the surface now.

You may feel pushed to the limits in these relationships but

ultimately this is a good time for working through such issues and

facing them squarely.

Sagittarius

You usually have a strong sense of personal direction but the impact

of Uranus constantly seems to be disrupting things you have

arranged and frustration mounts, especially in early April. Luckily

your mutable nature allows you to adjust to changes taking place in

your everyday life so you will probably stay one step ahead of the

game.

Capricorn

The disruptive influences all around you seem to be affecting your

most important personal relationships now so a change of

perspective and some practical measures are required to meet the

challenges that others are forcing you to face. That’s means just do

something that demonstrates your sensitivity to the situation.

Aquarius

The battleground is still the old versus the new and you are still in

the thick of it. The speed of change in ideas is relentless and the old

well-trodden paths are not much use to you now. It may be enough

to repackage what you believe deep down but you should also

recognize the possibility of more radical changes being necessary in

how and what you think.

Pisces

Between the devil and deep blue sea might be where you feel you

are now. April urges instant action and initiative but this is likely to

leave you feeling frazzled and stressed with no vision you can cling

to in sight. There seem to be no anchors as the things you have

taken for granted are all up in the air and you remain confused and

uncertain. Keep things as practical as a Pisces can….
