The Hindu Temple of Rochester is delighted to invite you
to attend the consecration and installation of Sri Ganesha
Murthy. The festivities and pujas begin on
Friday, Aug. 3 and culminate in the nstallation
and consecration Prathishtapana or
Sthapana) of the Murthy on Monday, Aug. 6.
While the Murthy, which is sculpted to
conform to the Agama Shilpa Shastra, is the
Sthoola (material) representation of the
Divine power, the subtle and abstract for of the Divine
power is represented in Yanthra. This is a specially made
copper plate with the inscription of the Bheeja (core)
Mantra of Sri Ganesha as well as the
geometrical representation of the
deity. Prior to the Sthapana of the
Murthy, Pujas are performed to the
Yanthra to invoke the Divine power.
The Yanthra is placed on the pedestal
and the Murthy is installed on top of the Yanthra.
The rituals consist of cleansing of the worship area
(vasthu homam), cleansing and purifying the Murthy in
water, grains, and flower, resting
the Murthy in bed. These are done
to use the natural elements to
secure vitality, radiance, comfort,
strength and energy to the icon.
These are accompanied by a set of
Havans (homas, fire offerings) that
are meant to invoke divine aspects on the limbs of the
icon. Vedic mantras are chanted to invoke spiritual
energy into the holy water in Kalashas, metal pots. The
kalashas are taken in procession on the last day and the
holy water is poured on the now-installed Murthy in a
symbolic transfer of power and to signify the process of
energizing the deity. Participating and performing the
installation and consecration of a Murthy bestow peace,
prosperity and good health on us and on our community.

First Day: Friday 9/14/12
5 pm to 9 pm: Deiva Prarthana; Anujnaa (seeking Divine
permission to perform the rituals);
Raksha Bandhanam; Acharya Rudvikavaranum (All the
priests are assigned to perform the pujas; Raksha (sacred
thread) is tied to protect the sanctum, devotees and the
premises);
Mrittikaa Sanghrahanam -worshipping mother earth and
gathering the soil
Ankurarpanam -Holy water is sprinkled on seedlings which
spout during the event to signify growth, prosperity and
health for the community
Pradhana Kumbha and Upakumbha Adhivasam -Preparing
the main and secondary kalash
Yanthra Puja(*) -Praying to the Yanthra of Ganesha Murthy

Second Day: Saturday 9/15/12
9 am to 12 noon: Ganapathy Puja-Praying to Ganesha to
remove all obstacles
Punyahavachanam -Purification ceremony
Pradhana & upakumbha Sthapana -Installing the Kalash
(The Kalashas, pots of sacred water, are established for the
ceremony. All the deities are invoked in the Kalashas. )
Bhimba Jala Adhivasam (*)– Murthy is immersed in holy
water for cleansing and invoking power
Vasthu Homam – Havan to propitiate Vasthu Purusha, the
deity that protects the site.
Moola Mantra Havan (**)
Bhog, Arti & Mahaprasad
4:30 pm to 9 pm Ganapathy Puja
Jala Udhvasam (removing Murthy from water)
Agni Prathishta – Establishing and invoking the holy Fire
Prayachchiththa Homam(**) – Havan to seek forgiveness
for any unintentional mistakes
Shanthi Homam (**)– Havan to request blessings of peace
and harmony and to pacify the elements
Dhanya Adhivasam (*)– Immersing the Murthy in grains to
add strength to the limbs; Bhog, Arti & Mahaprasad

The Yanthra Puja to Ganesha Murthy's Yanthra will be
performed until Sept. 12th. You have a rare opportunity
to have this auspicious puja performed at home or at the

Temple needs your support
As you realize, this is a significant undertaking for our
Temple, requiring significant financial resources for
getting the priest, supplies, arranging the logistics, etc.

the Murthy

part in a Havan or a puja (limited slots; please reserve
ahead). You could target your donation towards a specific
purpose such as Annadhan, Flowers, and Printing. You
could also donate towards the sthapana itself.

Shanthi Homam – Havan for peace and harmony
Maha Kumbhabhishekam – The sacred water from the
kalash is taken in procession around the Temple and Ablution
of the Murthy with the holy water from the kalash is
performed to complete the Prathishtapana and to signify the
consecration of the deity
Ganesha Ashtothra Puja – Chanting of 108 names of Ganesha
This is followed by honoring our Priests and the priests
blessing the community.
