organized numerous Pujas and festivals like Shravan Lakshmi
Yagna, Varalakshmi Vratam, Garuda Panchami, Upaakarma, Sri Krishna
Just last month we celebrated our major festival Ganesh Chathurti festival and
by about more than 300 devotees. We thank Lord Ganesh for the nice weather on
Visarjan day! We thank our priests and all the volunteers who have made these
successful events.
The election process for the 2013 has concluded. We thank Adi Gundlapalli for his
excellent service as Election Officer.
There are two major festivals coming soon: Dashera and Diwali. We are organizing
professional fireworks for this Diwali as well. We request devotees NOT to bring
any personal fireworks. The only personal fireworks that will be allowed are hand
held sparklers. Temple will have them available for purchase by devotees on Diwali
day.
A very transforming experience. Thousands of miles away from
Motherland.Salutations to all those who made it possible. This
Abode of Ganesha is undoubtedly very nice.
You have really worked hard on this. The temple is beautiful.
Very peaceful and absorbing. So nicely maintained. A nice place for
meditation.
You have a beautiful temple. I was impressed. This was my first visit
to the temple.
Thank you for the acceptance I received here at the temple, though I
was confused. It is truly a beautiful temple.
It is thrilling to choose and eat free food especially at the end of a
busy tiring shift. Hope that privilege will continue. Some may take
advantage of it. Some may insist on paying when they eat. some may
later, in their own time, because conscience quarrels. Hope all are
acceptable. Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the
Ganesha temple.
Nice temple, but we were unable to do Archana due to other Pooja
happening.
This is our second visit to the temple. Things got reminded again as
how the memories lasted over a year. We like the temple very much
and especially the Pujaris here are so forthcoming in helping and
willing to listen and talk. We liked the way the Archanas are
performed. These Archanas really make us feel so good and make us
feel worth the travel coming from Boise.
Hanuman Jayanti Celebrations on December 25,
2012
(Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in December in Karnataka
and Andhra Pradesh)
At the Temple: Abhisheka for Lord Hanuman is performed
every first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm
Who, in the world, is superior to Hanuman in valor, energy,
intelligence, prowess, character, charm, discernment,
composure, dexterity, vigor, and fortitude?
Rama Bhakta Hanuman the Scholar! Lord Hanuman is the only
learned scholar who knew the nine Vyakaranas. He learned the
Shastras from Surya Deva, the Sun God. He is well versed with the
Vedas and other sacred books.
The story of Hanuman and Lord Surya:
Hanuman bowed down his head before his parents in reverential
salutation and in the twinkling of an eye arrived before the chariot of
the Sun-God. After introducing himself Hanuman stood before the
Sun-God with his hands folded and prayed with reverence "O God !
Kindly accept me as your humble pupil".
His humble but intelligent submission charmed the sun-god, but in
order to test the ability and prudence of the boy, he said "O my dear
child ! You are fully aware of my chariot, incessantly rolling on
without tarrying, brushing aside my hunger, thirst and all kinds of
exertions. How can the process of teaching and learning take place
unless the preceptor and the receptor sit face to face with tranquil
minds."
Hanuman replied with reverence "O revered Sir, I shall pace back
with my face towards you with the same speed as your chariot rolls
ahead. This therefore, will cause no inconvenience or hardship in
learning." The Sun God readily agreed and the teaching began.
Visit your Temple, enjoy the heritage: Open all 7 days of the week 7

Within a very short period he taught Vedas, Shastras, Grammar
Philosophical Ideologies and mysteries of spiritual perfection.
Hanuman became a Savant and Supreme among all erudite
scholars.
Hanuman now well-versed in all abilities and skills humbly offered to
pay the Guru Dakshina to his spiritual preceptor, the Sun God, who
affectionately said "O my boy ! I need nothing. I only ask you to
protect Sugreeva as he is born of me." Hanuman assured his
preceptor that no harm would ever touch Sugreeva.
In this way he completed his education and returned home.
Hanuman and Yoga
If yoga is the ability to control one's mind then
Hanuman is the quintessential Yogi having a
perfect mastery over his senses, achieved
through a disciplined lifestyle tempered by the
twin streams of celibacy and selfless devotion
(bhakti).
Legend of Hanuman, the first to teach
Pranayama and the inventor of the Surya
Namaskar
Pranayama is the ability to control one's breath
so that the inhalation and exhalation of air is
rhythmic. Vayu, the god of air and wind, first
taught pranayama to his son Hanuman, who in turn taught it to
mankind.
Hanuman the disciple of Surya, the Sun God gives his energy freely
to others just as the Sun does. It is said that Hanuman himself
created Surya Namaskar, the yoga sun salutation as a greeting for
his teacher Lord Surya.
Hanuman the Great Musician!
Narada was a great musician and he was proud of that. There were
times when this pride slipped into arrogance. He felt that there were
no musicians at par with him. Vishnu sensed this and induced
Narada to meet Hanuman and hear him sing.
Hanuman was a great exponent of music and accepted Narada’s
request to sing. He kept his Veena on a rock while listening to
Hanuman. The great Hanuman rendered a piece which was so
enthralling that the hard rock melted. After enjoying the song, Narada
8
tried to pick his Veena only to find the instrument embedded into the
rock which hardened once the singing stopped.
Hanuman suggested that Narada could sing and melt the rock to get
his Veena. In spite of several attempts, Narada’s rendering did not
affect the rock. Hanuman sang again to soften the stone and allow
Narada to retrieve his Veena. A humbled Narada was thankful to
Hanuman for helping him get the Veena back.
Hanumad Ramayana:
After Rama had defeated the rakshasa Ravana of Lanka, Hanuman
proceeded to the Himalayas and began to write his version of the
Ramayana, the story of Rama as he had experienced it. This version
of Ramayana is called the Hanumad Ramayana.
When Valmiki heard about Hanumad Ramayana, he traveled all the
way to the Himalayas to meet the mighty Hanuman, who willingly
showed him his scripture that he had written with his nails on the
rocks. When Hanuman read out his version, Valmiki was stunned by
the sheer beauty and passion of the story.
“Hanumanji, you have written this with such devotion and deep
feeling! This poetry is so powerful and divine! I am honored to have
experienced this.”
But while Valmiki was enthralled, Hanuman noticed that he was sad.
“O Rishi, what is the reason for your sadness?” asked a puzzled
Hanuman.
“I’m sad because the Ramayana that I have so laboriously scripted is
nothing compared to the glory of yours. “
On hearing this, Hanuman without hesitation the rocks in his arms
and flew all the way to the sea. When he reached the sea, he
dropped the rocks on which he had written the Ramayana into the
waters with the name of Rama on his lips. Valmiki was shocked and
asked Hanuman why he did this.
He said he had written Rama’s story to express his love for the Lord
and now he had offered it to Rama by chanting his name.
Valmiki was astounded with Hanuman’s great devotion and humility.
He told Hanuman, “I will take another birth to sing your praise in this
world so all will know of your selfless deeds and the glory of your
Hanumad Ramayana!”
Q: Why do we chant “Shanti Shanti, Shanti” three times at the end of a
prayer?
12
A: To bring peace, Shanti is repeated three times at the end of the Mantra.
Why three times? Because there are three sources of disturbance to peace:
Coming from our own body and mind. For freedom
from this source of disturbance we chant the first
"shanti".
Coming from our surroundings, from anything
elemental or material outside of ourselves. This
includes human interventions, other living beings and
also the environment -- everything from the physical
environment (such as the weather or climate) to the
political environment. For freedom from this source of
disturbance we again chant "shanti".
Coming from factors beyond, such as the presiding
divine principle over all phenomena in the creation – in
short, God’s Will. As a prayer to the divine for peace we
chant a final "shanti".
Q: What are the Vedic Mantras/Shlokas chanted during the regular
weekend morning Abhishekas performed in the Temple?
A: The following Mantras are chanted:
1. On Saturday mornings at 8:45 am during Navagraha Abhishekam:
Navagraha Suktam; Navagraha Stotram and Aditya Hrudayam
2. On Saturday mornings 9:00 am during Venkateswara Abhishekam:
Venkatesha Suprabhatam; Taittiriya Upanishad- Shisksha Valli; Purusha
Suktam; Narayana Suktam; Sri Suktam; Bhu Suktam; Venkateswara
Ashtotram and Sattu Marai
3. On Sunday mornings 8:45 am during Ganesha Abhishekam:
Ganesha Atharvasirsha Upanishad; Rudram; Chamakam and Suktams
One day the little Ganesha went off to play in the woods of Mount Kailasa where
he lived. He was a mischievous little boy and he especially loved to run and play.
One day Ganesha spotted a white little cat and immediately pursued it. Ganesha
thought that the cat was having fun. During the run-catch game the terrified little
cat in his attempt to run away was
bruised and hurt. After a while
Ganesha gave up the chase went back
home.
When he got there, he saw his mother,
the Goddess Parvati.
He stopped in his tracks when he saw
that she had mud stains on her face
and hands and scratches on her arms.
“Mother, what happened to you?” he
asked.
Parvati looked at herself and said: “I
don’t know. Did you do this to me?”
“ME?” Ganesha exclaimed. “Why NO!” But just then, he looked down at his feet
and said, “Oh, but you know what? I was rather rough with our cat today.”
“Oh,” his mother said, gathering him up in her arms. “Now I understand. You
know, Ganesha, I am this whole world. My body is this whole earth. Anytime you
do anything to it, you hurt me. You see, I was that little cat, too. So anything you
did to it, you did to me."
“Oh, I understand now. My actions really do matter. I am so sorry, Mother. I won’t
do it again.
“It’s impossible not to do any harm to everything, but we can be very aware of
our actions, so that we do as little harm as possible.”
Ganesha thanked his mother for his lesson and went off to play again with the
little cat, taking care not to harm him.
Moral - God is in everything. Be kind and loving to all creatures!
Message from the ICC Board
Dear Community,
What an exciting and busy summer it has been for the India
Cultural Center! We are greatly heartened and appreciative of the
increasing number of participants and attendees at all the programs that are hosted by
your India Cultural Center.
The summer programs were kicked off with the much anticipated Utah Icon co-hosted
with Desibels. The event was a huge success in attracting top notch talent that
culminated in a closely contested final round. The Event was held over two different
weekends and total of 26 participants sang in a variety of Indian languages. The packed
attendance, at both the preliminary and final rounds, spoke volumes about the quality of
the singers and the show.
Following on the heels of the Utah Indian Icon was our first ever India Independence day
event held in our new building. The highlight of the program was the 5k/1K run and walk
which had close to a hundred participants of all ages who enthusiastically ran, walked,
jogged and made it to the finish line! A flag hoisting by the chief guest Sri. Parthasarathy,
Consul General of India at the San Francisco embassy was followed by a very nice
cultural program by members of the community.
The very popular India Mela is growing in strength every year and this year witnessed the
largest ever crowd at the Mela The crowds enjoyed a vast variety of wonderful street
foods prepared by our community groups. Children enjoyed the bouncing cages, slides,
train rides, face painting and various other activities. Henna artists were kept very busy
all afternoon painting intricate designs!
We also co-hosted two classical concerts in the late summer with the Utah Kannada
Koota. The first concert by Smt. Mahalakshmi was a treat in Hindustani classical music
and the audience thoroughly enjoyed her concert. In September, the Sri Ganesha Hindu
Temple co-hosted a devotional music concert by Shri. Vidyabhushana which too was
well attended.
We have an exciting variety of programs lined up for fall. On Sunday September 8 we
have a Bharatanatyam dance drama Devihaa Vahanam performed by Saraswati Gana
Nilayam. This program will be the highlight of the fall cultural programs that we present.
On December 2, the ICC and SGHT will be participating in the SLC Main Library Diwali
program. This popular program attracts a large audience and this year the theme is a
multi-cultural celebration to coincide with Diwali.
The number of classes and programs at the India cultural center is increasing and we
request the community to take advantage of these free classes. Please check Himavani
for details.
Srinivasa Ramanujan - The man who knew infinity …
Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887 – 1920) was an Indian
mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal
training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary
contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory,
infinite series, and continued fractions. Ramanujan was
said to be a natural genius by the English mathematician
G.H. Hardy, in the same league as mathematicians like
Euler and Gauss
Ramanujan's introduction to formal mathematics began at
age 10. He mastered advanced trigonometry by the age
of 12; he even discovered theorems of his own, and re-discovered Euler's
identity independently. By 17, Ramanujan had conducted his own mathematical
research on Bernoulli numbers and the Euler–Mascheroni constant.
Ramanujan sent samples of his theorems to academics at the University of
Cambridge. G. H. Hardy, recognizing the brilliance of his work, invited
Ramanujan to visit and work with him at Cambridge. Ramanujan was awarded a
B.A. degree by research (this degree was later renamed PhD) in March 1916 for
his work on highly composite numbers, which was published as a paper in the
Journal of the London Mathematical Society.
On 6 December 1917, he was elected to the London Mathematical Society. He
became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918, becoming the second Indian to do
so and he was one of the youngest Fellows in the history of the Royal Society.
On 13 October 1918, he became the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity
College, Cambridge "for his investigation in Elliptic functions and the Theory of
Numbers."
Srinivasa died in 1920 at the young age of 32. During his short lifetime,
Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3900 results (mostly identities and
equations). He stated results that were both original and highly unconventional,
such as the Ramanujan prime and the Ramanujan theta function. The
Ramanujan Journal, an international publication, was launched to publish work
in all areas of mathematics influenced by his work.
In December 2011, in recognition of his contribution to mathematics, the
Government of India declared that Ramanujan's birthday (22 December)
should be celebrated every year as National Mathematics Day, and also
declared 2012 the National Mathematical Year.
