Facelift for Tourist
Destinations
The long Diwali holiday week witnessed quite a
rush to tourist destinations from Navi Mumbai
and surrounding regions. But the facilities for
tourists in tourist destinations in Raigad
district call for serious attention. Tourism is no more an
elite indulgence alone. Weekend tourism is the order of
the day and a big infrastructure facelift is needed, in the
form of information kiosks, road, water and air
connectivity, lodging and boarding amenities for all
income groups, play parks, sight seeing locations, etc.
CIDCO Ltd. and MTDC has established another
corporation Maha Tourism Corporation, only to utilize
the Rs.600 crores lying with CIDCO. Instead of aiming
at developing tourism infrastructure the new corporation
apparently is keen on promoting existing private facilities
in the tourist destinations, by arranging hotel and room
bookings of private parties.
With MTDC responsible for promoting and developing
tourism in the state, the establishment of a parallel
corporation appeared mysterious ; however the agenda
of booking rooms of private establishments as a
government activity defeats the very objective of
developing tourist destinations, that the new corporation
was established for.
It is just like the mayor of Navi Mumbai calling FDA
officials to conduct surprise raids on sweatmeat
establishments on the eve of Diwali, when 4 full time
FDA officials are appointed by the State only for Navi
Mumbai to undertake the same task. The mayor got his
publicity, the citizens got no respite as no major culprit
was caught and the FDA officials were shown in bad light
as incapable of doing their regular duty.
With so many historical, pilgrimage, adventure,
scenic and beach locations in Raigad district, the tourism
department in the district led by the district collector
and zilla parishad president need to gird up their loins
and equip these destinations to cope with the prospective
mad rush, that the rapid urbanization of the region will
entail.
This will not only be good economics for the district,
in terms of employment and revenue generation, but
also for the State and national economy.
